...what would I like to eat?...

What is behind the door? That is the question each of us must ask when we come to a point of decision in our life. Will you walk through the door or wait or go around or ?

What is behind your door...behind your next decision?

Many years ago, as a school child, to find some answers to questions I had about old street lighting, I wrote to Stanton plc as Stanton Ironworks had become. Stanton Ironworks, near Nottingham, had become one of the UK's main manufacturers of street lighting columns - not in steel as may have been expected but in the new 1930s technology of spun concrete street lighting columns and brackets. They continued in business with a variety of styles and designs up into the 1980s when concrete standards went 'out of fashion'. This was largely due to the fact that when hit, concrete columns do not deflect and so inflict damage to vehicles and occupants - as this catalogue shows but making a point here about the fact their columns would stand such a passing blow.

Concrete lamp standards became popular due to several factors; initial cost and a seeming lack of maintenance was one as unlike steel columns these did not require painting on a regular basis. Another was architectural fashion and design; concrete could be moulded into so many shapes and forms and some eraly bracket designs were fanciful to the point of becoming ridiculed in the world of industrial design. This afflicted Stanton less than their great rival, Concrete Utilities of Ware, whose early works were quite something to behold! By the 1950s design had swung back to simplicity and utilty and Stanton's designs, like others, would mirror this shift. In addition the technology of production was better understood and so manufacturing became more economical in terms of materials. These were the inner steel wire and sections used to tension or stress the column with the concrete centrifugally spun around the 'outline' of the column in a mold.

In response to my childhood letter some kindly soul at Stanton photocopied pages from this earlier catalogue dating to around 1950; there are mentions of wartime damage to installations and the designs are before the early/mid 1950s simplification of columns and brackets that would be marketed as Stanton 8's and 9's. These are scans of photocopies and so can be a bit blurry but I think they are of enough interest to post here.

I have posted some single pages from this catalogue earlier and may now delete these older scans. These pages show one of the most popular designs, the Stanton Type 6, that came in two designs; the 6A with the angular column and the more popular and possibly post-war design the 6B. They were also available with double brackets as seen on the following pages. The 6A was rarer, I recall an installation on Old Walsall Road in West Bromwich and a few in Mayfield, Edinburgh. One hangs on next to the WCML at Rugby.

For many years large numbers of these columns survived having been 'sleeved' with metal brackets due to failure of the bracket and sprocket/spigot - thses being the weakest point of concrete column designs. As new PFI schemes sweep the country even these modified columns are now a rarity.

Huge Question Mark goldplated over brass matte filgree cut out Pendant would look perfect on black or plain tee or would make a statement.

Pendant is about 1 1/2" and done on vintage tooling, meaning machinery that used to make the charms in the early 50's, thus creating that vintage style in this necklace.

Florida Keys Sunscreen Questions Answered

If a question mark is not standing, it may be a person who's sleeping...

Questions are asked and answered all day long. It is great to meet face-to-face and have this intense Hackfest to solve problems.

This old Bengali Looking gentleman was ambling on slowly navigating the trenches dug out for storm water drain work and the traffic coming from behind. His eyes and face had this profound look. It was difficult to not wonder.. 'whats he thinking.. what is his problem..how can I help. Will he be the proud old man who gets offended if help is offered? "

Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak answers journalists' questions after a lunch with French president Jacques Chirac, 16 April 2007 at the Elysee Palace in Paris. Mubarak arrived in Paris the eve to bid farewell to his long-time friend, outgoing President Jacques Chirac, and sound out potential successors on the future of France's "Arab policy." The last-minute visit represents, from Cairo's view, a chance for Mubarak to salute a fellow statesman with whom he has had at least 30 official meetings over the past three decades and countless telephone conversations.
