#3 All painted and pretty. Pyrographed, acrylic paints and watercolour pencils (first time using them, LOVE them!) and decopage flowers and heart. I'm so happy getting back to painting! 45cm x 29.5cm plywood. Hmmm must take it outside and get a better photo to get rid of the shadow.

This 19" long pyrography, also called poker work or wood burning, decorated oar has an applied photograph of a photographer on a frozen shore line. I photographed it for a lecture we are giving on 19th century photography. It is marked "Ocean Park" but no state is mentioned. The frozen ocean rules out several of the many possibilities. I think it is from Ocean Park, Maine where a Chautauqua community was founded in 1881. It has the feel of an amateur project to me.

The third in our Etsy Metal challenges. This week its time to bring in the trash. The challenge was to find some garbage and make something of it. Two little piggies that we are, this is our meat n' tatters.
It just happened to be garbage day when we started this challenge. So, just to up the anty on ourselves, we limited ourselves to whatever we could find at the neighbor's curbside art supply.
As luck would have it, the guy two houses down was reflooring his bedroom with bamboo. This left a shitload of small bamboo scraps for us. We love America.
We also like to play with fire. What would happen if we took a soldering iron to the bamboo, we thought to ourselves? Magic!
A little carving, a little burning and Viola! Bamboo hearts.
Sterling silver, bamboo, bad habits.

Discovered a really cool technique: you take a filigree element (such as this - www.firemountaingems.com/details.asp?PN=H202274FD ), bring it to red heat on a candle or gas, drop it on a piece of paper and get this really-really nice lacey mystical image. And you can turn it another side up and get a slightly different image, too.
A couple of warnings, though: not all metallic focal elements and connectors and such are the same; some would melt, so do take care. The one you see in the picture behaved nicely. I heated it about 10 times and it didn't melt or spit or anything. Be sure to put your paper on a heat-resistant surface.
