Last week went into my cutoff bin in the shop and in no time came up with this new Trough for the larger nuts and fruit,
It was so nice to smell that wood again, its been awhile doing something with wood, even though was a simple project it paid off the same day when I saw the Chickadee carrying those nuts to the tree then coming back for more, and while eating dinner
I saw this little guy!

Experimenting with a few ideas for natural gift tags, using slices of birch branch and pyrography — the snowflake took ages!
Architecture that uses the materials available locally, and which produces a dwelling that is sustainable and renewable from generation to generation, and fulfils its function as a residence 'fit for king' is architecture to be commended.
Here at Gishora, in the commune of Giheta, 7 km from Gitega, the capital city of Burundi, is the royal court and in its centre, is the Ingoro (royal or chiefly residence). Through its history, this court was generally occupied by the chiefs and in its backyard (ikigo) are the dwelling of the maidservants, the room of worship (indaro ya Rugabo) and other structures. This court was reserved for the royal family.
The royal field of Gishora was founded by the Mwami (or King of Burundi) Ntare Rugamba in the first half of the 19th century after its victory against the Chief Ntibirangwa rebels.
The outer courtyard called Intangaro is the sanctuary for the sacred royal drums. Beyond the compound is the performance arena on which the drum dances are performed.
The exceptional architectural character of this royal residence (ingoro) is manifested in its construction technique. The circumference of the residence is traced using two linked units of measurement called itambwe (a unit of measurement corresponding to a man lying face down on the ground with his arms raised). A number of stakes and poles (markhamia lutea poles, Spathodea nilotica) are then planted. The holes for the poles were dug every 30 to 40 cm, to a depth of 60 cm, intended to receive 45 to 60 vertical piles 2 m high, between which 120 to 200 long poles (about 4 m) were planted. These support the roof. Once the stakes and the poles were placed, they were linked by a doubled torus going all around the construction. This torus is composed of a core of reeds sheathed in finely woven papyrus.
As for the interior, it is also intricate and purposefully designed and constructed. The internal under-roof is the most creative part of this royal dwelling. The vault is braided like an overturned basket bottom using a papyrus reed. During construction, this ceiling is centered on a pole the height of a man; it is gradually added below three concentric hoops made outside assembled every 20 or 30 cm. The whole was lifted as it widened by longer and longer forked poles and consolidated by radial rods. When the dome approached the diameter of the hut, it was erected definitively at the desired height using 13 pillars ending in pegged ridge shoes finely decorated by pyrography.
This royal dwelling with its courtyards, accompanying structures, and the drum sanctuary constitute one of the most significant precincts of cultural heritage in Burundi and as such is listed as UNESCO World Heritage estate.
We were there on a peacebuilding mission, invited by former member of the Burundian royal family, former refugee, and now Australian citizen. To be at Gishora was high privilege.

Macro Mondays theme: Nine
The traditional gift for the ninth wedding anniversary is willow. For our ninth anniversary (in December 2006) I burned the image of a willow tree with nine branches forming a heart into a bamboo coaster. This picture is in the centre of that coaster complete with another 13 years of wear and coffee stains. For your information bamboo is not the best choice for pyrography. :)

Los días 26/27/28 de mayo, mi estudio abre sus puertas a la visita de aquellas personas interesadas en al arte y sus proceso de creación . Es la ocasión ideal para ver un taller de arte y mirar algunos trabajos acabados y otros en proceso. Habrá así mismo demostraciones de diferentes técnicas de creación y será una ocasión única para entrar en contacto con un arte polifacético y una variedad de técnicas expresivas.
Incluye el programa, presentaciones organización y practica de talleres con fines didácticos ; en esta ocasión presentare el Arte de la escultura de alambre,abierto a todas las edades y demostraciones de pirograbado-pintura (artes decorativos ).

Il y aura aussi des démonstrations de différentes techniques de création . C' est aussi l'occasion d'entrer en contact direct avec l'art polifacétique( trèsversatile) combinant multiples facettes et une variété de techniques expressives.
Le programme comprend des présentations de l'organisation pratique des ateliers à des fins éducatives; à cette occasion, je vais vous présenter l'art de la sculpture en fil métallique, ouverte à tous les âges et des démonstrations de pyrogravure-peinture (art décoratif).

The days 26/27/28 of Ma , my art study opens its doors to visiting those interested in art and creation process. It is the ideal occasion to look calmly an art workshop and watch some finished work and others in process . There will be demonstrations of different creative techniques it can be a unique opportunity to come into contact with a multifaceted art and a variety of expressive techniques.
The program includes presentations and practical organization of workshops for educational purposes; on this occasion I will present the art of wire sculpture, open to all ages and demonstrations of pyrography-painting (decorative arts).

Learning how to use a TRUArt pyrography pen. Spiral line pattern on a small turned cherry dome. I like TRUArt pens because you can make your own nibs. This one is like a mini xtacto blade running just below cherry red. I want to incorporate burned patterns into my turnings.
