This is what the Greta Garbo portrait looks like after I burnt it by hand with my trusty pyrography tool.
Here is what it looked like "pre-burn" which was pretty simple:

First I sketched some horses in my notebook. Then I traced them with pyrography paper. Then I taped the paper to the gourd and burned through the paper with my woodburning tool. Then I discarded the paper.

Do you want a pallet flag, but don't want to repaint it year after year? Why not try your hand at some Pallet Flag Pyrography! Woodburning is a fun and inexpensive way to create a unique look for any wood project. This flag is a terrific example!
Options for this Pallet Flag Pyrography project:
I built the rectangular shape with a few pallet deck boards. I attached them to strips of wood to support the assembly.
You can approach this from one of two ways:
You can mask off your rows and then use a woodburning tool to burn alternating rows to the desired color you want using standard widths of deck boards.
You can cut narrower strips, using two tones of wood, so that the white strips are something like pine, poplar or maple. The strips you Woodburn can be of any darker material to start or an interesting wood grain.
Mask off the square for the stars and you can either freehand draw or use a template to draw your stars. You can burn the background in, or paint the stars on top of the wood burned area.
You can even have fun with decorative fasteners!
Finishing your Pallet Flag Pyrography project:
There are many options! After you do the wood burning, you could lightly sand to distress the look or lighten the overall effect. You could then stain the alternating stripes if you so chose. You will have to choose how to seal the project (if at all). It will depend on if this is primarily an indoor decoration, or if it is a piece of art for your garden or front porch for the neighborhood to enjoy. This is a project that is easy, but can be as creative as you want it to be! It could even be a good family project!

This is one of a set of wooden wedding place names that were made with a small hole in the corner so that they can be attached to the napkin of each guest by ribbon. They are personalised with the guest's name so that they also make a personal keepsake/memento for everyone to take away.
The colour on this image shows more accurately the warmth of the wood once treated with Danish oil for protection.
Finally got up the nerve to continue with my pyrography project...and freehanded the wolf onto a TN cover... Still a work in progress, but I like where it's going. The undyed piece is the test I did in march last year...yes, it took me that long to get it from scrap test to TN...

This is a large oversized coaster which is currently a one-off piece I made for my upcoming Christmas fairs. It seems popular so I may have to make more!
Since we were in the area (after our expedition up to the historic All Saints Church in Henly Brook) Ryan, Paula and I decided to take a spin to our old Alma Mater. We wandered all around the place (we weren't dumb enough to try and get inside) and out the back of what used to be the manual arts wing discovered a shaped piece of wood with a clown's face burnt onto it.
We left this outside one of the main gates for the lulz. If we'd had a marker we would have added "Welcome to Clown College!" to it :)

All designs are individual and can be tailored to specific needs. The work is intricate & time consuming. Seems easy enough, but believe me. I've tried it, and it's not.
