The purpose of the Book Week Celebration is to encourage students to become readers through fun and engaging activities that motivates students to appreciate the different kinds of literature the world has to offer - from epic novels to simple newspaper comics. A child who reads will become an creative adult who thinks.
To kick off the opening of the SFAMSC Book Week is a mini parade where the preschool, grade school, and some intermediate and high school student wear their costumes of their favourite literary and comic characters.
The purpose of our trip to Setsile (as introduced yesterday) was to meet with the Village Development Committee as shown in this photo. They are interested in building a community clinic and they invited Vision Support Group in to meet with them so they could get some ideas on how to actually go about doing that. The Kgosi is shown to the left. His name is Mr. Senau Ramaribana. He is quite interested in soliciting Debswana – the Joint Venture Diamond Mining Co. in Botswana (DeBeeers + Botswana = Debswana) for funding to construct a clinic building. I told them I would gladly write the letter to Debswana so we will see what happens.
On 16 November 2010, Common Purpose hosted a Generation Infinity event in Glasgow. The theme of the event was inspiring leadership across generations and how people can support intergenerational learning. The day included keynote speakers from Impact Arts, Thinktastic and the Commissioner for Children & Young people in Scotland and participants of all ages took part in debates and multi-media activities.
I usually toss shots like this pretty quickly, but in this case i like it. Perry was walking with a purpose toward his brother. Moments after this he froze into a stalky pose. Then they pounced and had their bromance wrestle.

This rusting turnstile is standing in the veldt (bush) serving no purpose whatsoever. I assume that it did once upon a time. To the left is a pole with barbed wire attached but it doesn't come to the turnstile, nor is there anything on the right of it. The dark line behind is the single track railway and I presume that at some time this turnstile provided access for pedestrians to cross over the railway!

The Hong Kong Truck Culture
The number of Trucks, Vans* and Special Purpose Vehicles (Light, Medium & Heavy) registered + licenced in Hong Kong seems to fluctuate between 120,000 - 125,000 vehicles and presumably new trucks registered are offset by old trucks being retired or sold over the border in China.
*Vans are classified as Light Goods Vehicles and are not shown in this album
In Hong Kong Trucks are classified as GOODS VEHICLES By the Transport Department - see below
☛Light Goods Vehicles - Goods vehicles of permitted gross vehicle weight not exceeding 5.5 tonnes.
☛Medium Goods Vehicles - Goods vehicles of permitted gross vehicle weight exceeding 5.5 tonnes but not exceeding 24 tonnes.
☛Heavy Goods Vehicles - Goods vehicles of permitted gross vehicle weight exceeding 24 tonnes but not exceeding 38 tonnes.
The major truck types you tend to see in urban areas are trucks carrying construction materials or waste, dump trucks, concrete mixers and all sizes of delivery trucks... outside of the urban areas it is container trucks and large trucks carrying construction materials.

The major purpose of a 3D internal scene is to create depth. Without natural light (sun light), I needed to precisely control the difference of internal lighting. Although there was an original internal designer, what I was supposed to do was not only convert a design from 2D to 3D, but to create a scene that was harmonizing and comfortable. In general, the feeling of light is weaker than in an external space. Therefore, if there are French windows in a room, I will let sun rays light the floor to emphasize lighting effects.
Although I needed to follow the original design regarding lighting, sometimes, because of the effect in a scene, I needed to add more lights to create an atmosphere. In addition, one of the purposes of this form of animation is to present the feeling of space. Hence, lighting is one of the major factors to approach this goal. The contrast between darkness and light result in the shape of everything in the real world, and that is the rule of lighting. The other major task is rendering, the exhibiting stage of material. In each project, designers will provide a specific spectrum of colors. Therefore, whatever I put in a scene, the color of material will be concerned. For the purpose of creating a harmonizing sense, I need to change and modify a material over and over again.

The War Department 1:2500 sheets feature contours, unlike the vast majority of public sales editions that only have bench marks and spot heights. The contemporaneous 6-inch sheet, Devon CXVII, is stated to have been surveyed and contoured by Captain Cameron R.E. in 1856, so this 1:2500 sheet is very likely to also be Cameron’s work. The survey would have been conducted at the 1:2500 scale and then photo-reduced at Southampton to enable the 6-inch plates to be engraved.
Lieutenant-Colonel John Cameron C.B., R.E., F.R.S. (1817-78) joined the Royal Engineers in 1839, rising to the post of Director General of the Ordnance Survey in 1875. One of his key areas of interest was the determination and recording of altitudes using spot heights, bench marks and contours, as borne out on this sheet (although the height datum is not identified in the marginalia. During this period, the datum was the Mean Sea Level measured at Victoria Dock, Liverpool, recorded over just nine days in 1844).
From the ‘Report on the Ordnance Survey of the United Kingdom for 1855/56’, the then Director, Henry James, writes:
‘A special survey has been made and engraved of Devonport, Stonehouse, and Plymouth and of a large district round these towns, for the Government and for the local Board of Health, which is to pay 500l towards the expense of this survey. An extension of this survey, including the ground to the west-ward, on which it is proposed to erect some works of defence, has since been ordered, and is in progress.’
‘It has been the practice hitherto to make such plans as the above as independent surveys, having no relation to each other, and simply in manuscript: but I have made the above-mentioned surveys as parts of the surveys of the counties to which they belong, occupying the sheets to which they belong if the whole counties were complete. By this arrangement, and by printing them on the scales now adopted for the national survey, every special survey so made extends the general survey on a uniform system.’
Other ‘War Department’ surveys at this time included:
- Aldershot (see this Bodleian Library Maplist, searching for Aldershot, and this Aldershot map held by the NLS)
- Portsmouth / Gosport / Northern parts of the Isle of Wight
- Forest of Dean
This particular sheet seems to have extremely limited relevance to Plymouth’s defences, the bulk of which were much closer to the city itself (see Plymouth Fortifications). Portsmouth was similarly surveyed i.e. over a large area surrounding the city. But in both cases, at the time of the 1856 survey, the locations of new defence works had yet to be established and so the maps were presumably intended to be for planning purposes. By the time the plans were printed, work on the new fortifications had already begun.

The purpose of this event is fourfold: firstly, to raise public consciousness of Ringbalin-River Stories in narrating not only a different understanding of the ecology of the basin but a new approach to the governance of the Basin; secondly, to draw attention to the governance implications of these stories; and, thirdly, to evaluate how a new government could use this approach to change governance to empower local communities to take charge of their own Murray Darling Basin futures.

Purpose of Irregular Ends:
These modifications serve several acoustical purposes:
Tone Control: With cut-up on the high side, the tone becomes fuller and gentler, and the pipe becomes more easily influenced by pulses or irregularities in air flow.
Stability: Proper nicking prevents random mode switching and helps achieve consistent sound
Volume and Timbre: The irregular shaping affects how loud the pipe can become before becoming unstable
Locally produced security equipment donated for the purpose of enhancing security of the Parliament complex. #The Centre for Defence Research and Development under the Ministry of Defence handed over locally produced security equipment in Parliament today (25) to ensure the security of the Parliament complex.
Defence Secretary Gen. (Rtd.) Kamal Gunaratne handed over the equipment to Hon. Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana, Speaker of Parliament. The equipment includes a Drone Jammer System and security communications equipment used to ensure the defence mechanism.
Secretary-General of Parliament Mr. Dhammika Dasanayake, Serjeant-at-Arms, Mr. Narendra Fernando, Air Vice Marshal M. D. A. P. Payoe, Director General of the Research Analysis Projection and Development Branch Major General Renuka Rowell, Deputy Director General Captain T. D. S De Silva, Director of the Parliamentary Police Division Manjula Senarath were present at this occasion.
It was disclosed that if this stock of equipment was imported, it would cost Rs. 19 million. However, the Centre for Defence Research and Development of the Ministry of Defense only spent approximately Rs. 7 million to have this equipment produced locally.
The Hon. Speaker and the Secretary General of Parliament thanked the Security Forces for providing this stock of locally produced equipment with advanced technology. Speaking at the event, the Defence Secretary said that the Defence Forces have the capability to manufacture advanced technology level equipment for the security forces as well as other national needs, and by such ways the security forces have the ability to protect national wealth.
Serjeant-at-Arms, Mr. Narendra Fernando said that for the first time in the history of the Parliament of Sri Lanka, the stock of equipment was provided in accordance with a security requirement identified during the Joint Security Exercise held in July 2020 with the participation of all security forces attached to the security of Parliament.
