Tessa and Porter are slapping each other around in foolish play. Porter (left) is Tessa's half brother - they have the same sire (Chance) but different dams. Porter is 3 weeks older than Tessa and an amazing pup. Unlike Tessa, he is very calm even in a place with a lot of commotion. Porter was shown today for the first time and got praise and some ribbons but no points towards a title, because there was not enough competition.

Tessa was not shown for obvious reasons - she'd be all over the judge. Just not ready. I may never show her, as my priority is in pursuing a field title, but who knows, I may try this one day. Until then, taking her to events like this is great exposure regardless of what we pursue in the future.

As a gift for their chief test pilot, Harry Hawker, the Sopwith company built a small, single-seat biplane for his personal use. Hawker reported that it was very agile and had a phenomenal rate of climb for the time, so Sopwith built four more, calling them unofficially the Sopwith Sparrow. The company realized they had a viable fighter on their hands, at a time when Britain needed one: newer German fighters like the Albatros D.III were starting to regain the upper hand over the Western Front. The Sparrow was upscaled slightly to the Sopwith Scout.

The prototype Scout flew in February 1916, and both the Royal Naval Air Service and the Royal Flying Corps quickly ordered it into production. Because it was smaller than Sopwith's main production aircraft at the time, the Strutter, pilots nicknamed the Scout the "Pup." Much to Sopwith's chagrin, the name stuck.

The RNAS' elite 8 Squadron got the Pup first, in May 1916, and found it to be a superb dogfighter, one that could turn inside all known German fighters and outclimb most of them. The RFC got theirs in December, and learned the same thing. The Germans quickly learned to respect this small fighter. New pilots found it a handful, as it could easily get away from an inexperienced pilot because it was so agile, but veteran pilots soon learned to use that to their advantage.

Unfortunately for the British, the Pup's dominance wasn't to last long. By 1917, the Germans started fielding the Fokker D.VII, which outmatched the Pup, and Pups began to be withdrawn in favor of Sopwith Camels and Triplanes; the former built on the Pup's success. Surviving aircraft were moved back to defend London from Zeppelins, or became what would later be known as lead-in fighter trainers.

The Pup would have one more claim to fame: on 2 August 1917, a Pup became the first aircraft to land on a moving carrier. (The pilot, Squadron Commander Edwin Dunning, tragically also would become the first man to die in a naval landing accident five days later.) A Pup also became the first carrier-launched aircraft to shoot down an enemy aircraft when one brought down a zeppelin over the North Sea, also in August 1917. The US Navy bought one to experiment with as well. Had World War I continued past 1918, Pups might have returned to combat onboard British carriers.

1770 Pups were built, and four survive today, two flyable, along with a number of replicas.

This is a replica, built by Airdrome Airplanes for display at the Combat Air Museum in Topeka, Kansas, and went on display in 2011. It is in the colors of a RNAS unit, possibly 8 Sqn.

Then this morning Harry Burden Of Livermore. KY. drove out and picked up his male pup. This is the last of the males. I really liked this cross and looked forward keeping the whole litter for my own use but not enough meat close by to train all them. I am considering making this cross again. And like before I will not be booking any pups from this this litter.

Welcoming the Wood family.

Mom, Little pup, Big sis, Big dog, Little sis, and Dad

Mom comes from the

central depths of Treeland,

a place where growth and sappy love

contract and expand.

Little pup is from the burnt,

rooted forest of a far away land.

While Big dog comes from

a place so grand.

Big sis and Little sis,

share a room in Treeland,

High amongst the branch's where

the canopy is fanned.

Dad is a little bit of both,

the deep center,

grounded in the land,

with a little bit of sun and roots ,

from someplace that is grand.

All together they form

the rings in the tree band.

One family rooted in the sand.

Native owned sled dog pups chewing on reindeer hide next to a fishing boat in the tundra grass. I don't think I could come up with more of an Alaskan sentence if I tried...

The best part? I didn't have to try.

A skittish little pup was all we found this morning in the park....

Luzerne Susquehanna SW-9 and SW-1 trundle south along River Road near Hilldale, PA with 5 cars in tow from their interchange with Reading & Northern at Pittston. Born: 30-03-2009

A blacknose and a livernose pup

Continuing saga of the new mother and pup: soon after she gave birth the other pregnant females high tailed it... probably not wanting anything to do with a little pup before their own was born.

The mom went into the water with the others, leaving her pup floundering on shore but she stayed just beneath it while it humped its way over to the fucus covered rock and started nursing frantically. I was afraid it would bond with the rock and ignore its mother. Finally she was able to get its attention by pushing her nose in between the rock and the pup and they nuzzled for a minute. It followed her into the water (minutes after birth) and they swam around for at least twenty minutes before hauling out again on the same spot to nuzzle some more. It did not nurse in the time I saw it. But I think they come into the world with a good layer of fat to carry them for a while. That is if their mom's have eaten well during pregnancy.

This proud mamma has been hanging out on the lock by the shop for a few days. Her pup is basically a fuzzy lump has needs near constant supervision.

My custom soda pup, pink and cute! She's just taking a drive, stopped at a gas station and had some fun to kill the time.
