Galapagos Sea Lions leave their pups in creches while they go to feed. This little fellow seemed very happy playing on his own.
Just dropped these beauties on the fire. Can hardly wait! Grandma and the pups are hungry, and are not afraid to let poppa know
When we are going somewhere, Little Burrito is supposed to walk sedately to the car and wait for me to open the car door so he can jump in. Yesterday he decided to take a run up the old logging road, which is forbidden territory unless he is on a leash and accompanied by an adult. Chasing him only makes him run faster so i waited and hoped there wasn't a coyote lurking in the brush hoping to snatch him.
If you turn up the sound you can hear him crunching through the leaves. You can also hear him panting a little from the exertion -- he's not in the best shape!!
Normally I plan ahead, but this was mostly a fly by the seat of the pants trip. Hwy 1 along the Pacific Coast had a surprise in store for me (my husband apparently knew about it). The end of January and beginning of February activity at the San Simeon elephant seal rookery was at its noisy peak. Mothers defending their spots in their middle sized voices, pups squealing to be fed in their higher pitched voices, the alpha bull roaring just off shore with a few beta males banished nearby, all made a tremendous racket. For about seven miles, every sandy beach was covered with mothers and pups. Each beach had a bull waiting for the females to come into estrus at the end of the feeding period of about a month. During the entire stay, about 3 months for the bulls, the adults do not eat or drink anything. Most lose about half their body weight.

I could only get three of them in this picture but there are five coyote pups altogether. It was very hard to catch them when they weren't tumbling around and biting each other. They're all kinds of fun to watch...if you've got a few minutes, check them out in this video.
