More puddles at Pizzey Park, Burleigh Heads

Took my Thursday Walk after the 2nd storm rolled through. Confined my photos to reflectons in the puddles. Feeling like it should have been purple rain:(

A few of 13 goslings enjoying playing and swimming in a large puddle from previous heavy rain. Some were splashing and playing but I missed those. They would shortly watch a battle of some of the adults shown in following photos.

For today's special flickr food channel edition, these orange sulphur butterflies were getting some kind of nutrition from what looked like dry sand.

Mud-puddling, or simply puddling, is a behaviour most conspicuous in butterflies, but occurs in other animals as well, mainly insects; they seek out certain moist substances such as rotting plant matter, mud and carrion and they suck up the fluid. From the fluids they obtain nutrients such as salts and amino acids that play various roles in their physiology, ethology and ecology. Males seem to benefit from the sodium uptake through mud-puddling behaviour with an increase in reproductive success. The collected sodium and amino acids are often transferred to the female with the spermatophore during mating as a nuptial gift. This nutrition also enhances the survival rate of the eggs.

Puddling is a behavior commonly seen in butterflies but also exhibited by other insects and other animals. They congregate at wet places to obtain moisture that contains nutrients such as salts and amino acids that play various roles in their physiology, ethology and ecology. Usually it is wet soil but may be rotting plant matter or even carrion. Here we see them on water trickling over rocks below a dam.

In Valencia they have moved the river outside the city and thus got space for a beautiful facility. A few giant flat puddles should remind you that once the Turia had its bed here and give the futuristic building a shining frame.

A combined reflection of El Capitan and the Three Brothers in a puddle formed when the Merced River overflowed its banks into an adjoining low spot. During the few days I was there in early May, the water level in the puddle varied with the ebb and flow of the Merced River's water level. Note the flooded photographer's trail leading to the river bank.

This past weekend I suddenly felt very strongly that too much time had been allocated to apples and associated lunacy, and it was imperative to head into the hills and go for a walk with the family. My older teenager was working at the local ice-cream parlor beginning early afternoon, and he had been out working late the night before, so my wife and youngest son and mutt left him to sleep. Stepping out of the car, the morning light and fresh air were immediately worth it. Not far up the trail we encountered a pair of moose (male and female), and my wife accidentally got within 20 feet of the male before noticing him lying down and staring at her. She immediately retreated, but the two moose barely moved and just seemed to want to lay down and rest.

As mentioned yesterday, there was not much happening at all at Elk Island. I kept my pass through visit short to have time for what I would find at Hermitage Park, a large city park in Edmonton nestled in the river valley. Upon getting there the first place I checked was an area where people have set up several feeders. In the past there was always some kind of bird action, but on this early Spring day there was none to be seen, but there was this Mallard Drake enjoying the water of a puddle in the parking lot beside those feeders.

This would be the closest I would get to any Ducks at the park on my short visit. Perhaps not the best surroundings, but it was cool to see a duck in the viewfinder after a very long Winter.
