This rare Album was created and published anonymously. It is comprised of plates with costumes, human types of the Ottoman Empire and officials of the Ottoman administration. Most of the illustrations copy pictures of the highly popular work of N. de Nicolay, first published in 1563. However, the legends to several plates misdescribe the figures. The edition included ninety-six plates in total, while the copy of the Gennadius Library only has thirty-five plates. Illustrations are accompanied by short explanatory texts.

Albums showing Ottoman officials and other human types of the Ottoman Empire circulated from the 16th century onwards and gradually became very popular. Wood and copper engravings were replaced by lithographs and watercolours, and often the etchings were coloured. In the 18th century, several variations on a fixed series of subjects were in circulation, and by that time the plates rendered figures, faces, nationalities, professions, costumes and other picturesque details in much more realistic style.

Sözkonusu nadir Albümün ne yaratıcısı nede yayıncısı bilinmektedir. İçeriğini Osmanlı İmparatorluğunda yaşayan çeşitli insan tipleri, kıyafetler, ve Osmanlı devlet yönetiminde görevli kişilerin resimleri oluşturur. Tabloların çoğundaki konular daha önce yayınlanmış ve büyük başarı görmüş olan N. De Nicolay'ın Albümünde (ilk baskısı 1563) yer alan benzer konulu tabloların kopyasıdır. Ancak birçok tabloda özdeşleşmeler yanlış aktarılmıştır. Eserin aslı doksan altı tane tablo içerirken Gennadios Kütüphanesinde bulunan sözkonusu cilt sadece otuz beş tane tablo içermekte. Tablolar kısa açıklayıcı metinler eşliğindedir.

Osmanlı İmparatorluğunda yaşayan insan tipleri ve devlet yönetiminde görevli kişilerin resmini sergileyen Albümler 16. yüzyıldan beri yayınlanan bir kitap türüdür. Bu Albümler giderek yaygınlaşır, tahta yada bakır baskı gravüründen litografi (taş baskı) yada akuarel (sulu boya resim) türüne dönüşür, bazen de sözkonusu gravürlere renk eklenir.

18. yüzyıl boyunca sergilenen tablolarda aynı konular küçük farklarla birçok kez tekrarlanmakla birlikte bu tablolardaki insan figürleri, değişik milletlerden insan tipleri, çeşitli meslekler, farklı karakterler, kıyafetler ve başka ayrıntılar büyük doğallıkla aktarılmıştır.

This photograph was published in the Illustrated Chronicle on the 24th of May 1916.

During the Great War the Illustrated Chronicle published photographs of soldiers and sailors from Newcastle and the North East of England, which had been in the news. The photographs were sent in by relatives and give us a glimpse into the past.

The physical collection held by Newcastle Libraries comprises bound volumes of the newspaper from 1910 to 1925. We are keen to find out more about the people in the photographs. If you recognise anyone in the images and have any stories and information to add please comment below.

Leaflet for the Minolta cameras, certainly published in 1957.

Document owned and scanned by rebollo_fr. It is in public domain, as are all anonymous works published more than fifty years ago in Japan.

See also the Camera-wiki page about Minolta.

My little sister has had her first book published. I'm very proud of her. She's had a number of articles published in the past and done the odd spot on DIY tv but this is too cool. Had a great time discussing the photography contained there in....

Poems of James Joyce

Shakespeare and Co., Paris, published Pomes Penyeach, by James Joyce, in 1927.

An American, Sylvia Beach, who was a patron of Joyce, owned this publishing business and bookshop. She was the first publisher of Ulysses in 1922.

Joyce also published 36 short poems entitled Chamber Music.

I have painted a series of James Joyce’s Poems in watercolours using waterproof ink

on hand made Indian paper where I have given the paper an aged appearance.

Each painting is given its attributable date of the poems composition.

A postally unused carte postale published by Neurdein et Cie of Paris.

Amiens is the chief city of Picardy, in the valley of the River Somme, and is just over 100 km north of Paris.

The Gothic Cathedral of our Lady of Amiens is the tallest complete cathedral in France, with the greatest interior volume (estimated at 200,000 cubic metres).

According to this estimate, the cathedral could comfortably accommodate well over three billion table tennis balls, or sixty billion marbles. (Yes, billion, not million!) This number of marbles, laid end to end, would produce a line 900,000km long - it would encircle the earth 22 times, or stretch to the moon and back nearly two and a half times. It's a big building!

The vaults of the nave are 42.3 metres high, and the curved central entrance arch is over 50 feet (15.24m) high.

Work on the cathedral started in 1220 and was mostly finished by 1266. The floors include a number of designs, including a swastika. The labyrinth was installed in 1288.

The cathedral contains what is alleged to be the head of St. John the Baptist, a relic brought back from Constantinople. You can find out what happened to one of his fingers by searching for the tag 65SJD88. There are bits of him all over the place! In fact the Great Mosque in Damascus also claims to hold the head of John the Baptist.

The west front of the cathedral was built between 1220 and 1236. It shows an unusual degree of artistic unity. Its lower tier with 3 vast deep porches is capped with a gallery of larger than life-size kings which stretches across the entire façade beneath the rose window.

The immense rose window has a diameter of 43 feet (13m).

Above the rose window is an open arcade - the Galerie des Sonneurs. A sonneur is a player of traditional music, primarily in Brittany, typically playing a clarinet or the Breton bagpipe.

In the 1919 book Mr. Standfast by John Buchan (1875-1940), the character Richard Hannay describes the cathedral as being:

"...the noblest church that the

hand of man ever built for God".
