The treacherous hornby Rapids. This seemingly impossible sandstone wall was said to be inspiration for some of M C Escher's famous drawings (although the source of this rumour is unreliable).
A completely reworked version of this image, including some valuable feedback from Adam Williams.
I took a punt and entered it in the Better Photography Image of the Year competition, Creative Flair section. It was awarded a Silver and finished in the top 50. A very pleasing result.

Had a talk with my old man
Said, "Help me understand"
He said "Turn 68, oh, you'll re-negotiate"
"Don't stop this train"
Don't for a minute change the place you're in
And don't think I couldn't ever understand
I tried my hand
John, honestly we'll never stop this train"
Cause now I see, I'm never gonna stop this train
Never gonna stop this train.

I have always lived in houses, which were very close to the sea and also very close there was a railway line. I have always liked to see a train pass or hear its sound. When I was little and left school, we would go to the railways, close to home, to throw stones at the freight wagons of the freight trains that came down and brought salt from the Súria and Cardona mines, to be loaded onto ships in the port of Barcelona. In addition to throwing stones at it, we counted the number of wagons the locomotive was carrying. Possibly, this train loaded with salt, its schedule was around 1 noon and not at 2:10, like the song written by Albertano and sung with that special voice by Taj Mahal, whom I consider the best bluesman, with permission from B.B. King.
We spend a part of our childhood on the railroad tracks, between abandoned wagons and freight trains. And the port and the sea in summer. Unforgettable days.
There was a day, when several locomotives united, transported many wagons. We count more than a hundred. They seem like a lot to me, but the mind of a child, when he is a child, is a little messy. They talk and think in such a way that it seems they are a little crazy. But they are not. I don't know if it was really more than a hundred wagons that we counted. Possibly we miscounted. But that day... that day was a truly unforgettable "orgy" of stone throwing.
On this railway line, some people died who did not hear the locomotive arrive. And even some person committed suicide, stretched out on the tracks while the railroad came at full speed, without the possibility of stopping. While i'm listening to "Mystery Train" by The Neville Brothers, with this lilting rhythm, imitating the sound of a railway, I remember the kind locomotive driver, who when he saw us, he would sound the train's horn, say hello to us and reduce the speed of the locomotive, so that we had more time to throw stones. We were not hooligans. We were just... children playing .
Never let a train get away from you. And much less, those trains that suddenly appear and cross our lives. Get on all the trains you find, even if they are mysterious... because life is a mystery train, you never know where it will take you.
.....
Cause now I see, I'm never gonna stop this train
Never gonna stop this train.
Well I woke up this morning and the sun refused to shine.
Til I hear the 2:10 train.
I published a pic of that lighthouse earlier today... but I wasn't happy with it... so ... sorry guys for the confusion. :-*
This one matches the atmosphere of that wonderful sim better.

The Brazilian Merganser (Mergus octosetaceus) is one of the most threatened waterfowl in the world and one of the most threatened birds in Americas. Its distribution is restricted to the center-south of Brazil, and parts of Paraguay and Argentina. The species inhabits clean rivers and streams, with rapids and still waters, bordered by forests and with fish abundance. Besides being naturally rare, it has been affected by several human activities that interfere directly or indirectly with its habitats. Until very recently, there was very little available information about Brazilian Merganser. Fortunately, in the last years, intense field studies have improved our knowledge about its habits, ecology and distribution. The information which has been arisen from these studies, although still basic, is helping the species conservation.
In 2006, the Brazilian Ministry of Environment (MMA) published the Action plan for the Brazilian Merganser Conservation, a strategic document with guidelines for conservation actions in long term.
In 2008, the Instituto Terra Brasilis started a project to mark and monitor Brazilian Merganser individuals using colour rings and radio transmitters in the Serra da Canastra region, state of Minas Gerais. We believe the coming results will lead to a major contribution to improve our knowledge about this species, in particular in its territoriality, migration and dispersal.

Clara and I drove 50 miles through a twisting gorge in the dark and through a very dense fog to reach this spot. The lake was flooding and this was taken just before sunrise. I know the water looks like snow, but it isn't. She liked this so much we will put a large print on our living room wall.
Another example of how Clara graces my life.

The melodies and the chants of the Armenian liturgy date back when Armenia, the first country in the world adopted Christianity as a state religion in 301 AD., becoming the first officially Christian state, ten years before the Roman Empire. Obviously the first religious chants, following the tradition, were initially transmitted orally and then with an ancient practice of notation called "Neumes" in Armenian "Khaz.” It was only later in the 19th century that these chants were transcribed in modern European notation. My photo today for MM is a small Hymnal book of the Armenian Liturgy published in 1911, in the printing house of the Armenian monastery on the island of San Lazzaro in Venice, reproducing the chants and canticles using the ancient practice of the Armenian Neume notation.
The fishing is over
Manakara (Madagascar) - Those who are used to browsing my gallery know this beach. I have published here several photos of this place that I love so much.
Behind the dunes is the fishing village. As I have come to this beach on several occasions to watch the return of the canoes, I am beginning to be known and the welcome is always warm. The fishermen still do not understand how I can come from so far away to photograph them? It must be said that here they see few tourists. In any case, no one like me who stays with them practically all day.

In Japan's Sagano Bamboo Forest, on the outskirts of Kyoto, towering green stalks of the famously versatile plant sway in the wind, creaking eerily they collide and twist, leaves rustling.
If you've ever clicked on a rundown of "places to see before you die" or a compilation of the most beautiful forests in the world, chances are you've seen a photo of Sagano.
Located in the gorgeous Arashiyama district of western Kyoto, the Sagano Bamboo Forest's popularity has expanded in recent years, coinciding with the growing number of Buzzfeed-esque articles that include it on superlative-heavy travel lists.
Though it's the beauty of the bamboo that brings in the masses, those distinct rustling sounds have become an attraction in their own right. A few years ago the Ministry of Environment included the Sagano Bamboo Forest on its list of "100 Soundscapes of Japan" -- a selection of everyday noises intended to encourage locals to stop and enjoy nature's music.

Queenscliff Tunnel.
The wormhole (also known as the Queenscliff Tunnel) was constructed in 1908 by local fishermen as a shortcut through from Manly to Freshwater beach to the north.
I have been meaning to get to this location for a while now, and finally had an opportunity early on Friday morning.
This is actually quite a low and narrow tunneel - definitely a solo shooting oppotunity.

AND it's a bakery--breads. This view shows the bakery work section, which is why we don't see any big pizza ovens. My son straightened me out on this. This is also adjacent to the sales, shipping , and carry out section, which may explain some of what we see.

Era bellissima, lei, e guardava sempre il mare. Per poter vedere quegli occhi, lui, il mare lo tenne sempre alle spalle. E non lo vide mai.
She was beautiful, her, and always looked at the sea. In order to see those eyes, he, the sea always kept behind. And he never saw him.

My first published shot from my trip to Havana, part of an effort to put together a book by seven photographers called Cuba: Seven in 10 (details on Kickstarter: www.kickstarter.com/projects/1159643096/cuba-seven-in-10 ).
The view over the D'Entrecasteaux channel towards South West Tasmania.
Taken from the top of Mount Mangana, Bruny Island.
A herd of bighorn sheep bachelors were taking a siesta this day a few years ago in Yellowstone NP. We tried to position ourselves from many different angles. I wanted to isolate just one for the shot, yet still keep some landscape in the image to show the habitat and tell a story. There were bighorns concentrated to the left and to the right. I found an angle I thought would work and I almost was able to get that shot ... except for the head and body of another nearby. I guess that through my lens, I thought it was a rock ... or maybe just hoping that it was. Too many bighorn, I guess that's a good problem to have, right?
Bighorn sheep are a favorite of mine. Their eyes are hypnotic and never look away. Their curls are a fantastic look back at the encounters that they've been through. Their sense of community is also impressive... that is, until it's time for the rut.
Hope that everyone has a wonderful Wednesday and thanks for stopping by to view.

During our last visit to Arches National Park, we dedicated a lot of time to the Windows trail, exploring the various arch formations that make the short hike truly spectacular. This time, I felt more confident about the shot I wanted and came well prepared. We arrived before sunrise and before the crowds gathered. While searching for a good spot, I asked my sister—who was visiting—to be my model, and she gladly agreed. I'm happy I captured the image I envisioned before the crowds arrived.
