Photograph published 30/10/1918
During the Great War the Illustrated Chronicle published photographs of soldiers and sailors from Newcastle and the North East of England, which had been in the news. The photographs were sent in by relatives and give us a glimpse into the past.
The physical collection held by Newcastle Libraries comprises bound volumes of the newspaper from 1910 to 1925. We are keen to find out more about the people in the photographs. If you recognize anyone in the images and have any stories and information to add please comment below.

a german company, Bärbel Drexel, requested to use my pic of an opuntia stricta in a calendar. all i requested as payment (since they couldn't offer anything else) was credit for the photo and a calendar.
i'm really excited about having a photo published in a calendar like this. :) yay july!
I finally finished publishing (tiny run) my book (story) that I wrote. I made several soft-cover versions.

Jess Glynne, la cantante britannica che ha incantato il mondo con la sua voce, torna in Italia per un imperdibile data, il 4 marzo al Fabrique di Milano.
Dopo essere stata contattata nel 2013 dal produttore Route94, per il quale ha riscritto e cantato una sua canzone “My Love”, Jessica Hannah Glynne ha raggiunto il successo nel 2014 grazie alla collaborazione con il gruppo Clean Bandit nel singolo “Rather Be” che ha debuttato alla prima posizione nelle classifiche, trionfando ai Grammy Awards nella categoria “miglior registrazione dance”.
Ad oggi il singolo, certificato 4 dischi di platino, conta oltre 600 milioni di streams su Spotify e più di 400 milioni di visualizzazioni su YouTube.
Nel luglio 2014 ha pubblicato “Right Here”, il suo primo singolo da solista e nel novembre dello stesso anno ha collaborato di nuovo con i Clean Bandit nel singolo “Real Love”, che ha raggiunto la vetta in varie classifiche mondiali.
Il suo secondo singolo da solista è “Hold My Hand”che si è classificato per tre settimane in vetta nel Regno Unito.
“I Cry When I Laugh”, il suo primo album uscito nell’agosto 2015, è stato un successo ovunque: ha debuttato al primo posto nelle classifiche e ha generato oltre 12 milioni di vendite singole e più di 2,5 miliardi di stream Spotify in tutto il mondo.
Anche l’Italia è stata conquistata dal suo talento, tanto che “I Cry When I Laugh” ha raggiunto la top 10 degli album più venduti. I suoi singoli hanno venduto oltre 400.000 copie e hanno conseguito certificazioni importanti tra cui: triplo platino per “Take Me Home”, doppio platino per “Hold My Hand”, platino per “Not Letting Go”e per “Don’t Be So hard On Yoursel”.

Believe it or not I will on occasion shoot something other than emotionally vulnerable work that makes babies cry...
This is a house. It's an awesome house, completely "green" and was designed by my friend Andrew. I had the honor of shooting it back in the spring and now it appears in the current issue of Innovative Home. A coffee table book is forthcoming in 2008.
Andrew also just got married and a baby is also forthcoming in 2008. Been a good year all around...

Dopo il sold out al Circolo Magnolia e la partecipazione al Festival di Sanremo, con la vittoria dei duetti assieme a Motta, Nada torna in concerto a Milano nella splendida cornice del Castello Sforzesco l’11 Luglio 2019; sul palco gli amici John Parish, The Zen Circus e Motta.
Attualmente in tour per presentare “È un momento difficile, tesoro”, il suo nuovo album di inediti, Nada continua a riscuotere il favore di un numeroso pubblico: in questa primissima parte di tour, infatti, ha registrato ben 7 sold out, confermandosi interprete e autrice dalla classe e dalla sensibilità uniche.
Per presentare il nuovo album, Nada ha partecipato ad importanti trasmissioni, come “Quelli che il calcio” (Rai2), “Save the date” (Rai5 e in replica su Rai3), “Di Martedì” (La7), “Linea Notte” (Rai3) ed è stata ospite ai microfoni di diverse radio nazionali, tra cui Radio Capital, Radio24, Rai Radio1 e Rai Radio2. Inoltre, un suo intero concerto è stato trasmesso in diretta su Rai Radio2 per “Radio2live”.
L’album “È un momento difficile, tesoro” vede il ritorno alla produzione di John Parish (già produttore di PJ Harvey, Eels, Giant Sand, Afterhours ed altri), che torna al fianco di Nada dopo lo splendido lavoro fatto nell’album “Tutto l’amore che mi manca” (2004).
Album in cui si ritrova la vita, il pensiero e l’amore di cui Nada è capace, “È un momento difficile, tesoro” è stato anticipato dall’uscita del singolo “Dove sono i tuoi occhi”, accompagnato da un videoclip, diretto da Francesco Cabras, girato al Macro-Asilo, museo di arte contemporanea di Roma, seguito dal secondo brano estratto, la title track “È un momento difficile, tesoro”.
Nada Malanima, nota semplicemente come Nada, è nata a Rossignano Marittimo (Livorno) il 17 novembre 1953. Maggiormente conosciuta come cantante e cantautrice, spesse volte sottovalutata dalla critica, Nada è anche attrice di teatro e scrittrice.
Divenne nota al grande pubblico per aver presentato al Festival di Sanremo nel 1969 la famosissima canzone “Ma che freddo fa“, quando aveva appena 15 anni. La sua hit andò subito in testa alle classifiche e ci restò per ben cinque settimane. “Cuore stanco” è la sua seconda hit di successo. Si ripresenta assiduamente a Sanremo, nei primi anni ’70. Nell’edizione del ’71 vinse insieme a Nicola Di Bari, con la canzone “Il cuore è uno zingaro” di Franco Migliacci, mentre nel ’72 si piazza al terzo posto con “Re di denari“.
Nada con (Francesco) Motta ha vinto il premio per il miglior duetto all’ultimo Sanremo (il brano era Dov’è l’Italia), ma la loro conoscenza è antica: militava nei Criminal Jokers che, a loro volta, hanno girato lo Stivale con Nada, artista che ha cinquant’anni di carriera alle spalle (tanti ne sono passati dal Festival di “Ma che freddo fa”), ma è la più attuale delle artiste della sua generazione, capace di sfornare album diretti e commoventi come il recente “È un momento difficile, tesoro”, tra i migliori dell’anno.
John Parish, innanzitutto è polistrumentista, autore, produttore inglese, collaboratore di Pj Harvey, degli Eels, dei Giant Sand, degli Sparklehorse, di innumerevoli altri; era stato cruciale per la realizzazione di “Tutto l’amore che mi manca”, uno dei più belli della carriera dell’artista che si era scoperta non più solo cantante, ma anche autrice di canzoni che meritavano quella veste scarna, essenziale ed efficace.
E alla fine The Zen Circus, indie band pisana, tra le più importanti e apprezzate del panorama contemporaneo, hanno incrociato a più riprese il loro percorso con quello della Malanima, che ha cantato in “Vuoti a perdere” mentre Appino, Ufo e Qqru si sono prestati come backing band per “Vamp” oltre a ospitarla sul palco. In apertura ai Public Service Broadcasting, il math-rock dei marchigiani Lush Rimbaud.
Se la prima uscita “Action From The Basement” (2006) è stato definito “Un treno in corsa destinato a deragliare, una spirale ansiogena di secchiate d'acqua fredda mentre dormi in ascensore”, con “The Sound Of The Vanishing Era” il treno è deragliato veramente. Il nuovo lp dei Lush Rimbaud, registrato da Fabio Magistrali e coprodotto da FromScratch, Brigadisco, BloodySound, Hotviruz, SweetTeddy e NarvaloSuoni, è influenzato tanto dal kraut e dallo space rock, quanto da noise e postpunk d'oltreoceano, lasciando tuttavia spazio all'improvvisazione e al trip introspettivo. I solchi del vinile e le sue facciate rappresentano una linea di demarcazione fra due epoche, quella in cui eravamo abituati a vivere e quella in cui ci stiamo affacciando. Cambia la prospettiva, sicuramente più matura e consapevole, da cui i quattro partono per questo secondo "viaggio sonoro", in cui tentano di scattare istantanee di un mondo in continua evoluzione. A fare da Cicerone è Errico Malatesta (raffigurato anche in copertina) i cui scritti, più attuali che mai, fanno da sfondo allo scenario rappresentato attraverso le otto tracce del disco e - non ultimo - dall' ottimo lavoro grafico di Rocco Lombardi. In primo piano la ricerca della melodia attraverso l'incastro di chitarre, loops e sintetizzatori, alternando atmosfere dilatate a passaggi tirati e reiterazioni ossessive. Questa volta nell'immaginario dei Lush Rimbaud arrivano nuove visioni: navicelle spaziali e mucche camaleontiche, eserciti di moderni mercenari e dèi allucinati. Chimere di una nuova era che noi tutti siamo destinati a cavalcare.

The popularity of Blackhawk characters during World War II prompted other publishers to attempt to capitalize on that series’ success. Comics starring aviators became so numerous, that they could be considered a separate genre. One of the most notable was Airboy which featured Davy Nelson, an orphaned teenager (though later that was revised) who took to the skies in his own plane to oppose the Axis powers. However, the real star of the book was the plane itself, nicknamed “Birdie” because it flew by flapping its wings like a bird. Airboy could call Birdie, much like a faithful pet, through a short-wave radio device.
In 1986 Eclipse Comics published a new Airboy title, featuring a modern version of this Golden Age character.

My Big Sky photo represents Montana in "The States," a unique book of poems by Craig Foltz, published by Ugly Duckling Presse. The book is in the form of perforated postcards.
Maybe one day being published on gapersblock.com will get old but it still feels absolutely wonderful each time that it happens.
This is two years in a row I've had my photo of Lollapalooza selected by the Gapers Block people as one of the ones most representation of Lollapalooza.
This is a huge honor for me as there were photos by some of the concert photographers in Chicago I respect the most submitted in the same batch.
As is almost always the case, the same day this was published, my friend Jason and his wife's blog and environmentally friendly house were also profiled.

All'Alcatraz il cantante sardo presenta l'album "Necessità lunatica"
Lanciato dal talent show Amici di Maria De Filippi, Marco Carta è ormai giunto al suo quarto album. In scaletta, oltre a brani recenti come Mi hai guardato per caso, anche La Forza Mia, con cui il cantante originario di Cagliari ha vinto il Festival di Sanremo nel 2009.
Marco Carta ha vinto come “miglior cantante italiano” i Kids’ Choice Awards 2012, il grande appuntamento di Nickelodeon che quest’anno ha festeggiato la 25esima edizione e che è stato presentato da Will Smith a Los Angeles.
Quest’ultimo riconoscimento si aggiunge ai successi che hanno visto Carta protagonista in questi anni. Dopo la vittoria ad Amici (2008) e dopo la vittoria al Festival di Sanremo (2009) ha ricevuto due premi ai TRL Awards a Trieste (Man Of The Year e Best #1 Of The Year), tre premi agli Wind Musici Awards (uno per il disco di platino di “Ti rincontrerò”, uno per il disco di platino di “La Forza Mia”, e il terzo come artista più votato da RTL 102.5); a luglio a Venezia ha ritirato il premio speciale Venice Music Awards come artista maschile dell’anno. A gennaio 2010 Marco Carta ha trionfato con “la Forza Mia e” e Dentro ad ogni brivido” nella classifica dei migliori video del 2009 selezionati da Mtv Hits e votati dagli utenti di SKY.it. Nel 2011 il cantante vince i TRL Awards 2011 nella categoria Best Talent Show Artist e ritira i “Wind Music Awards” a Verona per le vendite di “Il cuore muove”.
