One of the keys to getting quality photos is to ensure that they are correctly exposed. Although you can make alterations in software afterwards, it is always best to get the exposure right in the camera.
In my film days, I used a Weston Master V but since I moved to digital I have become lazy, relying on the meters built into my cameras.
Built in meters do a good job most of the time but can be fooled by dark or light subject leading to over or under exposed results.
The sure fire way to get the exposure correct is to read the incident light rather than the reflected light and that is what the Sekonic L 358 does (it can also read reflected light if you change the lumishere for the supplied lumigrid).
The 358 also reads flash exposures and can show the ratio of flash to natural light so it is perfect for my off the camera flash using wireless triggers.
There are all sorts of other features like the ability to take several reading and average them. You could say it is a bit more advanced than my old Weston Master!

After being properly instructed to make matcha in Japan (thank you, Obubu Tea Farm!), these are my first attempts to make it at home. I brought back some nice matcha, and the chawans that have been patiently tolerating various teas and even non-tea foods are proving very effective & attractive for their intended use.

Properly designed and constructed asphalt parking lots, rarely deteriorate due to heavy traffic alone. Oxidation, destructive softening effects of gasoline, inclement weather, oil and de-icer can all influence the condition of a parking lot’s asphalt on the surface.
Built in 1894, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery was at one time the largest salmon cannery in British Columbia, packing over 2 1/2 million cans in 1897 alone.
Exeter Cathedral, properly known as the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter in Exeter, is an Anglican cathedral, and the seat of the Bishop of Exeter, in the city of Exeter, Devon, in South West England. The present building was complete by about 1400, and has several notable features, including an early set of misericords, an astronomical clock and the longest uninterrupted vaulted ceiling in England.
The founding of the cathedral at Exeter, dedicated to Saint Peter, dates from 1050, when the seat of the bishop of Devon and Cornwall was transferred from Crediton because of a fear of sea-raids. A Saxon minster already existing within the town (and dedicated to Saint Mary and Saint Peter) was used by Leofric as his seat, but services were often held out of doors, close to the site of the present cathedral building.
In 1107 William Warelwast was appointed to the see, and this was the catalyst for the building of a new cathedral in the Norman style. Its official foundation was in 1133, during Warelwast's time, but it took many more years to complete. Following the appointment of Walter Bronescombe as bishop in 1258, the building was already recognised as outmoded, and it was rebuilt in the Decorated Gothic style, following the example of Salisbury. However, much of the Norman building was kept, including the two massive square towers and part of the walls. It was constructed entirely of local stone, including Purbeck Marble. The new cathedral was complete by about 1400, apart from the addition of the chapter house and chantry chapels.
During the Second World War, Exeter was one of the targets of a German air offensive against British cities of cultural and historical importance, which became known as the "Baedeker Blitz". On 4 May 1942 an early-morning air raid took place over Exeter. The cathedral sustained a direct hit by a large high-explosive bomb on the chapel of St James, completely demolishing it. The muniment room above, three bays of the aisle and two flying buttresses were also destroyed in the blast. The medieval wooden screen opposite the chapel was smashed into many pieces by the blast, but it has been reconstructed and restored. Many of the cathedral's most important artefacts, such as the ancient glass (including the great east window), the misericords, the bishop's throne, the Exeter Book, the ancient charters (of King Athelstan and Edward the Confessor) and other precious documents from the library had been removed in anticipation of such an attack. The precious effigy of Walter Branscombe had been protected by sand bags. Subsequent repairs and the clearance of the area around the western end of the building uncovered portions of earlier structures, including remains of the Roman city and of the original Norman cathedral. Properly converted these using Silkypix. Unfortunately, it did this weird thing where any overexposed areas have neon green and yellow in the highlights instead of white. Really odd. Anyone know a fix for this?
It will take me some time to properly identify much of these Hawai‘i shoreline residents. Uploading them nameless for now will give me more incentive than if they languish unseen on my hard-drive.
Any visitors who can help: Your kōkua would be greatly appreciated! I seek their Hawaiian names, species name, and whether they are native (brought to Hawai‘i by wind, wave or wing and not man) endemic (native, and only found in Hawai‘i) indigenous (native, but can be found elsewhere) or alien/introduced, and most interesting to me of all, their mo‘olelo: story or legend.

Roof Installation: A properly installed roof is vital in safeguarding your home from external elements. Roof installation enhances your property's aesthetics and ensures its longevity, durability, and protection against the elements. Additionally, a well-installed roof improves energy efficiency, reduces the risk of leaks, and enhances your property's overall value and curb appeal. The benefits of a well-installed roof cannot be overstated, as it serves as the first line of defense against rain, snow, wind, and other potential damages.
At Sky Roofing Construction & Remodeling, we will provide insights into the advantages and benefits of roof installation, covering everything you need to know to make informed decisions about enhancing your home's protection and value. Whether you are considering a roof replacement or are in the initial stages of constructing your dream home, this guide will provide valuable insights into the benefits and advantages of a quality roof installation.
Types of Roof Installation
Asphalt shingle roofs are a widely favored choice for roof installations. Renowned for their affordability and resilience, they are a preferred option among homeowners. Available in various colors and styles, asphalt shingles offer versatility, enabling customization to complement your home's overall look. Their ease of installation further adds to their appeal, making them a practical and budget-friendly choice for many.
Metal roofing is another popular choice for roof installation. With its sleek and modern appearance, metal roofs have gained popularity recently. They are incredibly durable and withstand harsh weather conditions, making them a long-lasting investment. Metal roofs also have excellent energy efficiency, reflecting heat from the sun and reducing the need for excessive cooling during the hot summer months. Metal drip edge is often used in metal roof installations to prevent water damage and direct water away from the roof edge.
For those looking for a more environmentally friendly option, there is the option of installing a green roof. Green roofs involve planting vegetation on the rooftop, which provides numerous benefits. Not only do they improve air quality by capturing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, but they also reduce stormwater runoff and help regulate the temperature inside the building. Additionally, green roofs provide insulation, reducing energy consumption and lowering heating and cooling costs.
Slate roof installations are a popular choice for those seeking a luxurious and elegant look for their homes. Slate roofs are known for their beauty and durability. They can last for several decades, making them a long-term investment. Additionally, slate is a fire-resistant material, providing added safety and peace of mind. Slate roofs often include drip edge installations to enhance water shedding and protect the roof's edges.
Lastly, there is the option of a flat roof installation. While not as common in residential buildings, flat roofs are typical in commercial and industrial structures. Flat roofs are preferred for their affordability and ease of installation. They also provide extra space for rooftop gardens, solar panels, or other functional installations. Roof decks are commonly used in flat roof installations to create usable outdoor spaces or support equipment.
Considerations for Roof Installation
The first consideration is the choice of materials. With technological advancements, a wide range of roofing materials are now available. The right choice of material depends on various factors, including the region's climate, the property's architectural style, and the budget. Some popular materials include asphalt shingles, metal roofs, wood shakes, slate, and tile. Each material offers unique benefits, such as durability, energy efficiency, or aesthetic appeal. Consulting with a roofing professional can help determine the most suitable material for your needs, including roof replacement.
Another crucial consideration is the expertise and experience of the roofing contractor. A professionally installed roof ensures the longevity and functionality of the structure. Choosing a reliable and experienced roofing contractor is essential to ensure the job is done correctly, including installing roof decking and starter strips. Look for contractors with a proven track record, positive customer reviews, and appropriate licenses and certifications. Asking for referrals from friends or family members who have recently had roof installations can also help find reputable contractors.
Additionally, it is essential to consider the time and cost involved in roof installation, especially in areas prone to heavy rain. Roofing projects can vary in duration and cost depending on their size and complexity. Obtaining multiple quotes from different contractors can help you compare prices and ensure that the chosen contractor aligns with your budget. While cost is a significant factor, it is equally important to prioritize quality and expertise when selecting a contractor.
Roof installation is not a one-size-fits-all process. Each property has unique characteristics that should be taken into account. Factors such as the slope of the roof, local building codes, and ventilation requirements must be considered during the planning and installation stages. Adequate ventilation, including attic vents and ridge vents, is essential for maintaining a healthy and functional roof, as it helps to regulate moisture and prevent the growth of mold and mildew. Proper planning and implementation of these considerations, including attention to nail heads and other details like roof deck cleaning, will contribute to the overall durability and performance of the roof planes.
Roof Installation Process
The roof installation process is a meticulous and carefully orchestrated journey designed to seamlessly transition from an old or damaged roof to a brand-new masterpiece that exudes durability and style. It begins with a comprehensive assessment, where seasoned professionals meticulously evaluate your current roof's condition, identifying any necessary repairs or replacements. Whether you desire a simple asphalt shingle replacement or have grand ambitions for a metal or tile roof, the experienced hands of roofing experts will guide you through the entire process, mapping out a plan tailored to your specific needs and preferences, including roof shingles, roof ridge, synthetic underlayment, starter shingles, roof inspections, and ensuring the integrity of the entire roof, all while obtaining the necessary building permit.
Preparation is key to successful roof installation. Before commencing the project, skilled technicians will meticulously measure the dimensions of your roof to ensure precise and accurate material estimates. Combining their expertise with the latest technologies, they will calculate the optimal materials needed, preventing wastage and ensuring cost-effectiveness. With all the necessary materials procured, the installation process can begin, bringing you another step closer to a structurally sound and visually pleasing roof surface.
Removing the old roof marks the initial stage of the installation process, especially for steeper roofs. Teamwork and precision are of the utmost importance during this phase, as roofers carefully strip away the layers, ensuring no damage is inflicted upon the underlying structure. Special care is taken to safeguard the surrounding landscape and property from debris, ensuring the installation process is as unintrusive as possible. Once the old roof is removed, any repairs to the underlying structure are addressed, providing a solid base for the new roof, including shingle tabs and a roof deck.
Now, the stage is set for installing the new roofing material, with various roofing options available. Roofing professionals meticulously lay down each shingle, tile, or metal panel, ensuring a secure and watertight seal with the synthetic underlayment. The craftsmanship involved in this process is of the highest order, with precision cutting and measuring techniques employed to guarantee a flawless fit of starter shingles. Attention to detail is crucial during this phase, as installers meticulously align each component, adhering to the highest industry standards.
Upon completion of the installation, roofing professionals conduct a meticulous inspection, including roof repairs if necessary, leaving no stone unturned in their quest for perfection. They check for potential leaks, gaps, or deficiencies to ensure that your new roof is airtight and impervious to the elements. Finally, they clean up any residual debris, leaving your property immaculate and the entire roof ready for years of reliable performance.
The benefits of roof installation extend far beyond the uplift in aesthetics. With a new roof, homeowners are equipped with enhanced protection against harsh weather conditions, including rain, wind, hail, and extreme temperature variations. Additionally, a well-installed and adequately insulated roof can contribute to reduced energy costs, providing savings in the long run. Not to mention, the newfound curb appeal brought by a new roof can significantly increase the value of your property.
Roof Installation Warranty
A roof installation warranty guarantees the roofing contractor or company that the work performed will meet the highest standards of quality and durability, including ridge cap shingles and attention to the roof edge. It assures that any defects or faults resulting from the installation process, such as roof leaks, hip roofs, or roof damage, will be rectified without any additional costs incurred by the property owner. This warranty typically covers a specific duration, which can vary depending on the contractor and the type of roofing system installed.
One of the primary benefits of a roof installation warranty is the protection it offers against unforeseen circumstances. Whether it is a leak, cracked shingles, or other roofing issues, having a warranty ensures that you are not left to foot the bill for repairs that should have been addressed during installation. Instead, the roofing contractor is responsible for fixing the problem promptly and efficiently.
Moreover, a roof installation warranty can provide financial benefits in the long run. If a significant issue arises within the warranty period, the roofing contractor will bear the cost of necessary repairs or replacement materials. With a warranty, these expenses could be substantial and manageable for property owners, potentially causing significant financial strain. Therefore, a warranty acts as a safety net for your investment, protecting you from unexpected expenses.
Another advantage of a roof installation warranty is the assurance it provides in the expertise and professionalism of the roofing company. Contractors who offer a warranty are inherently confident in their artistry and stand behind it. It signifies that they strive for excellence, take pride in their craftsmanship, and are committed to customer satisfaction. A warranty can be viewed as a mark of trustworthiness and reliability, which is essential when choosing a roofing contractor to entrust with your property.
Roof Installation Financing
Roof installation financing offers a key advantage, particularly for commercial buildings, by allowing you to spread the cost over time. Installing a new roof, whether a tile roof or a steep roof covering a large area, represents a substantial investment. Only some have the immediate funds to cover the entire expense upfront. With financing, you can divide the cost, including roof replacement expenses, into manageable monthly payments that align with your budget. This approach enables you to acquire the necessary roof without burdening your finances.
Additionally, roof installation financing often comes with competitive interest rates, making it an attractive option for many. These rates can be lower than alternative forms of borrowing, such as credit cards or personal loans. By opting for financing specifically designed for roof installation, you can save money in the long run by paying less interest.
Another advantage of roof installation financing is its flexibility. You can choose the repayment term that suits your needs, whether it's a shorter period or a more extended timeframe. This flexibility allows you to customize your financing agreement to align with your financial goals and capabilities, including considering roofing cost estimates provided by a professional roofing contractor.
Furthermore, financing your roof installation provides peace of mind, knowing that your roof deck protection is covered, among other aspects. Roofing projects can be unexpected, and waiting until you have enough money saved up may result in more extensive repairs or even interior damage from leaks. Financing enables you to address the issue promptly and prevent further deterioration, protecting your home or commercial building and its value.

First properly hand-wound, center-pull ball on the nostepinne. Took approx 2 evenings for all 575 yds of Wollmeise-ee goodness.
(Pardon the fuzz & the hair. Ooo, embarrassing...)
Of course the yarn is Wollmeise Sockenwolle 100% superwash in Fratello and is from Yarnissima. The nostepinne is from Ma & Pa Spindles, and it is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship. If you're in the market for a drop spindle, nostepinne or niddy noddy consider checking out Ma & Pa. Added bonus, they are located in Monona, WI, just a hop skip and a jump from my States-side residence! And finally, Hatchtown Farm has some outstanding instructions for winding a flattop/bottom ball.
Properly defined body position of the diver including pointed toes and feet touching. No splash. Very, very high score for Evaxebra!
or more properly St Patrick's Rock. The principal building on the top is the cathedral, unroofed in the C18, yet still impressive in its proportions. To the south is the Romanesque Cormac's Chapel with medieval murals and frecoes, into which tourists are admitted for a limited time, some 20 or so a time. Views across to the small city below and to the west to Hore Abbey in the fields below The Rock. Despite some parts covered in scaffolding and plastic for restoration work it was to me a very magical place.
