Pullman photo
Posing for their portrait, Pullman's experimental pair "Progress" and "Advance" have their picture taken outside the Pullman plant near Chicago. The pair were built by Pullman in 1936 to test out new accomodations as well as new concepts in the emerging streamlined/lightweight car age. Closest is "Progress", a 3 Bedroom-1 Compartment-Buffet-Lounge-Obs. and in the rear is 14 Duplex Room-2 Bedroom "Advance". The articulated duo were initailly used in demonstration service to showcase the latest ideas. In 1937, the pair were put into service on Union Pacific's Forty-Niner. The pair, still Pullman owned were renamed "Bear Flag" (ex-"Advance") and "California Republic" (ex-Progress). After the Forty-Niner came off in 1941, the pair were used on a host of name trains until 1948, when they returned to UP service. The duo was retained by Pullman in the 1948 split up. The pair was retired in 1956 and sold to the Purdy Co. for scrap.
