Coding Kandinsky: Free Workshop for Middle Schoolers

Professional media artist and educator Sofy Yuditskaya presented a daylong workshop focusing on creating digital art. After exploring the galleries, middle school students used Adobe Photoshop and the visual programming language Pure Data to create and code their own original work inspired by the art of Vasily Kandinsky.

Over 500 boys and girls participate in the 3-month program of weekly sessions, offered year-round in Lubuto Libraries, and participants additionally form Mentoring Clubs in their communities. After each weekly session the youth are interviewed to determine mastery of the message and to determine its and previous weeks’ sessions impact on their lives. A large number of participants are street children, and all come from highly vulnerable circumstances.
The North Charleston Police Department implemented Project S.T.A.N.D (Stop and Take A New Direction) aimed at not just arresting low level narcotics dealers with little or no prior criminal history but to go a step further and help those involved in the activity change their lives for the better. This is program aimed at reducing recidivism through working on all aspects of the criminals’ lives.
This project was the focus of a Dateline NBC special entitled “Intersection” which aired on March 14, 2013.

Central Campus’ Fashion Design and Merchandising program held its annual Fashion Show. The show featured fashions designed and modeled by students in the program. The show was the last event in the Central Campus week long Block Party.

SAN PEDRO - With the legendary battleship USS Iowa and renowned LAFD Fireboat 2 as a backdrop, the first ever graduates of the Firefighter/EMS Magnet (FEMS) program at Phineas Banning High School in Wilmington, California were honored by civic leaders, including City of Los Angeles Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas and Assistant Chief Steven Gutierrez, both alumni of the school, at a waterfront ceremony on May 24, 2019. Chief Terrazas warmly congratulated each FEMS graduate with a hearty handshake and words of encouragement as their families cheered their unique accomplishment. One of four youth programs supported by the LAFD, FEMS provides a highly structured and progressive pathway for achieving academic, physical and life skills beneficial to a fire service career, including teamwork, leadership, courage and commitment.
