Des Moines Public Schools will activate our summer meal program on Thursday, March 26 to provide meals for students during the Coronavirus shutdown. In the meantime, two community partners - the Des Moines Area Religious Council and the Food Bank of Iowa - are providing food for students and their families at schools throughout the city.
Pizza Ranch of Urbandale donated nearly 100 pizzas, so volunteers from Des Moines Refugee Support dispersed the pizzas for deliveries around the city at Moulton Elementary School on Wednesday March 18th.

During a Native American history-themed sleepover at the National Archives in Washington, DC, 101 kids and their grown-ups spent the night enjoying history-related activities, learning from special guests actor Martin Sensmeier, Jim Thorpe historians Bob Wheeler and Flo Ridlon, and Native American storyteller Perry Ground. After sleeping over night in the Rotunda, participants enjoyed a pancake breakfast made by the Archivist of the United States, David S. Ferriero, on October 14, 2018.

Brighter Bites is a collaborative effort designed to improve access to healthy, affordable food and provide nutrition education. The University of Texas School of Public Health, KIPP Schools, the Houston Food Bank and Texas Children's Hospital have partnered to offer the 16-week program to third-grade children enrolled at KIPP Explore Academy and their parents. As you can see from the photos, those healthy kale smoothies are a hit!
