A Water and Forestry ranger surveils a field where trees have been illegally cut down within Tiogo Forest, Burkina Faso on May 25, 2014. The trees were cut due to the inability for forest rangers to reach the area and undertake surveillance. Flooding of a nearby stream means the crossing is inaccessible for forest rangers. With the support of World Bank funding the stream will be dammed. The Forest of Tiogo in the west of Burkina Faso is one of six protected forests to benefit from the Forest Investment Program of the Climate Investment Fund. 1/4 of its 30,000 hectares have suffered degradation mainly due to overgrazing, agriculture, exploitation of its timber and non timber products.

Real Men Teach RMT 6th Annual Induction Ceremony

As it is with any induction ceremony, there was an air of excitement at the sixth Annual Real Men Teach (RMT) Induction ceremony held at the Anderson Center on Thursday, March 21.

With parents, friends, mentors and supporters watching, 18 young men took the oath to do their best to become future teacher leaders and influence other young lives in schools across the country to make the world a better place.

Motivational speaker and noted columnist Nigel Alston made the keynote address. Taking a note from the theme of the occasion “Dare to Teach”, he challenged the protégés (a term used for members of the program) to be bold and courageous as they prepare to take on one of the most important responsibilities of all professions. He told them a story about his days in college at Livingstone College as a football player and a chance encounter with one of his instructors.

He and the instructor’s paths crossed as he walked across the campus. “I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around and the instructor said ‘Mr. Alston, football season is over and you can do better,” he recalled. He said the point he wanted to make was that this instructor’s expectations of him were high because she saw something him that perhaps didn’t see.

“The people here today to witness your induction see something in you. Remember that,” Alston said. “What will you see in the children that you will help mold the future.”

Real Men Teach (RMT) is designed to support and increase the productivity of male students interested in majoring in teacher education. It is through RMT, that Winston-Salem State University male pre-service teachers will gain a heightened visibility, preparation, as teacher leaders, and serve as Ambassadors for the teacher education.

The primary objective of the Real Men Teach Initiative is to prepare males majoring in education at Winston-Salem State University to become strong teacher/leaders. This objective is accomplished by program participants matriculating through a leadership curriculum and a mentoring component.
