After many emails I got about my photography work, asking what "magic" or extreme post processing/production I do to my photos? Well, as I answered to some of you, I decided to post this, here are some pointers.
I'm not an expert in photo editing, as you can see in the examples.
I believe most of the work should be done with the gear on field, and photo editing should be done genteelly just to bring the most out of the already good photo.
I once read an article by a well-known photographer, he said that a good photo can be made great in Photoshop/dark-room and a bad photo will still be bad no matter how much time you spent in Photoshop/dark-room.
• You need to be an expert in operating your photo gear.
This is the most important matter in getting good photos, but I guess you already
know that…
• I shoot only RAW, and fix exposure and WB with the manufacturer software (Canon
= Digital Photo Professional)
• In Photoshop I will Crop the image if necessary (no more than 40% out)
• Straighten/level the photo.
• Usually will do "auto contrast" or add manual contrast.
• In some cases will enhance or reduce color saturation (in some cases "auto
contrast" will burst color saturation to much)
• If "auto contrast" or manual contrast will not bring the photo to my
satisfying look I will play a bit with the curves tool, very powerful tool but use it wise
as it can ruin your photo and make it look like S**t ;-)
• I do occasionally use some plug-ins that simulate Films to give the photo a more
realistic look, or do some contrast/color fix refines, there are many free in the internet.
• I do not sharpen and reduce noise on the full size file, only on the 800X533 web file
or full size to be printed.
• In very extreme cases of bad exposure and colors I will try HDR, I've had a few
successes with HDR, but most of them came out good only on landscapes photos,
not aviation.
That’s about it, I know there are many procedure and tricks I should learn in Photoshop to get even more of the photos, but for now this works for me.
