So, I dropped by the DMV this morning to finally get my Cali
registration squared away, so I drove to work.
On my way through the parking lot for the trip back home, I heard a
paper cup hit the ground, and saw a guy getting into his car. Was he
littering? No, that's immoral and illegal, he wouldn't be tidying up
his car for the ride home by tossing his paper Starbucks cup on the
ground, right?
So, I walked over, knocked on his window, and let him know he dropped
his cup. I knelt down to pick it up for him, but it had rolled too far
under the car. He acknowledged this fact as a breeze brought the cup to
my foot and I handed it to him, which he accepted. I turned to leave.
Now normally if some enviro-wacko confronts you about your anti-social
behavior the polite thing to do is to take your litter back and throw it
out the window somewhere where the other guy won't see you, but as I
walked away, the dude solved his crisis by tossing the cup a few car
lengths away from his car and pulling out for the get-away.
I asked myself "what would masa do,"
as I reached for my Sidekick to see if I could catch a photo of his
license plate number as he drove away. I was a bit nervous since I was
a pedestrian confronting a car with an anti-social driver, and the
camera on the Sidekick powered up too slowly so where I thought I might
have gotten lucky, I got the "camera is powering up" screen.
Ah well, I walked back to my car, cup in hand, as there was no trash
receptacle along the way. I paused long enough for the chance of an
admiring glance at a lady who was getting in her SUV, and as I got in my
own car a green Saturn came roaring up and stopped behind my station
wagon, at a blocking angle on the passenger side of my rear.
A load rap at my window, "Yes," I answered.
"What is your f!cking problem?" The guy was going on middle-age.
Brownish skin, greying facial hair, tinted glasses and a growing gut.
I thought a moment. After all, we all have our f!cking problems from
time to time. But it seemed that of the two of us . . .
"I don't have any f_cking problems, sir. Can I help you?"
He wanted to know about my f!cking problem. I told him he dropped his
cup, did he still want it back, he did not, "I just want to avoid
littering," I explained.
He went back to his car, taking a moment to study the back of mine,
which is distinguishable from miles away, with the rope ratchet holding
the rear door shut, the soon-to-be-changed Illinois plates, the "Bin
Laden used your gas money" bumper sticker and some pro-bike,
pro-environment bumper stickers with which Uncle John decorated the
car.
I once had a guy imply that he has slashed my tires in retaliation for
not allowing him to steal my spot from a crowded Target parking lot. I
noted his license plate but never got around to troubling the Chicago
Police with that incident of Road Rage. But as a city boy I am hip to
the threats of parking lot vigilante justice. Of course, I usually take
the bus, so I don't mind if he wants to seek out my car tomorrow . . .
He gave me plenty of time to power up the Sidekick's camera and take a
few shots of the rear of his car from the sheet-metal safety of my
wagon, since I had no choice but to follow him out of the parking lot
anyway. I really doubt the number comes out, but hey, I guess he helped
solve what minor f_cking problem I did have just then. Maybe tomorrow I
can cruise the parking lot and find the plate number of a certain green
Saturn and ask the San Ramon Police if they'd care to pay him a visit.
We'll see . . .

5x7 Colour Paper negative
It all started with a new lens - My new Kodak Ektar 203mm lens...
When I tool a picture I had a double image.
Hmmm?
Must be light reflecting inside the many (4) filters...
Tried again with different light sources - still the same problem.
Ahh! must be the new lensboard doesn't fit right!
I build a new lens board, took a few more pics - still the same problem...
Ahh!!!
Must be that the lens board does not fit perfectly... again rebuilt the lens board (looks quite nice now with the fancy black felt backing, BTW). Tooks a few more pics - still the same problem.
suddenly - that Ah-ha moment!
I took a picture for 1 minute without opening the shutter - sure enough I had a picture.
1 minute in a dark room with a flashlight confirmed it - Pinholes in the bellows. My previous lens was 180 - this new lens extended the bellows more than any other!
after 12 bad pictures and some acrylic paint mixed with white glue, I think I
've solved the problem - really this time.

U.P. Breaking News: K. I. Sawyer Latest KC-135 Emergency Landing/Raising Safety Concerns
The following exclusive information was not reported yet by Upper Peninsula TV stations and other media.
Many safety questions remain and a military plane is officially grounded after an emergency in the skies over Marquette County, Michigan on Tues. July 8, 2014
The emergency landing of a KC-135 refueling tanker is the latest in a series of similar hydraulic incidents involving the aging fleet of Milwaukee's 128th Air Refueling Wing, Upper Peninsula Breaking News has learned.
Veteran Investigative Reporter Greg Peterson has the story:
upperpeninsulabreakingnews.wordpress.com/2014/07/09/u-p-b...
-----
Essentially a flying gas station – this Air National Guard KC-135 is grounded – following an emergency that has happened at least 5 times in the past two years to KC 135 refueling tankers from the 128th Air Refueling Wing in Milwaukee.
That's right – at least 5 times in the past two years – a KC-135 from the 128th has developed hydraulic problems resulting in emergency landings at airports around the Midwest.
The tankers are all about 50 years old.
In fact in June 2013, a reporter for Milwaukee Television station WISN TV-12 investigated a rash of KC-135 emergency landings after hydraulic warning.
Upper Peninsula Breaking News called the 128th's public affairs office to verify this important safety problem.
With overcast skies, the three-member crew of this KC-135 declared a hydraulic emergency:
Chief Don Hutchens, Forsyth Township Volunteer Fire Department:
Emergency officials from across Marquette County responded to the plane's call for help – fearing it might crash while landing – which would have been catastrophic.
The KC -135 was among several planes from the 128th Refueling Wing that have been practicing touch and goes on K.I. Sawyer's long runways.
Now the Marquette County Airport, the once vibrant K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base was a Strategic Air Command base – constantly on alert - with bomber crews ready to fly in moments.
This reporter has had the pleasure of riding on two KC-135 Refueling Tankers – as show in this photo when I worked at WLUC TV-6 in Marquette.
We refueled F-16 Jets over Lake Huron.
Then this reporter became one of only a handful of civilians to ride aboard a B-52 Bomber – this while I did features stories for the Mining Journal newspaper.
I was given this official coin of the Sawyer bomber wing and a patch – after as 12-hour flight that included Fourth of July Parades and an airshow in Grand Rapids.
This reporter hopes the officials at Milwaukee's 128th Air Refueling Wing get to the bottom of this hydraulic issues before there is a tragedy – as the large number of emergencies on this flying gas station is scary to all involved.

Military plane makes emergency landing in Indiana
www.wisn.com/news/south-east-wisconsin/milwaukee/Military...
A plane from Milwaukee's 128th Air Refueling Wing of the Wisconsin Air National Guard is grounded and undergoing repairs after an in-flight emergency Tuesday.
For the fourth time in two months a KC-135 from Milwaukee makes an emergency landing, this time in Indiana.
The flight crew lost control of the hydraulic system and made an emergency landing in Indiana.
It's the fourth in-flight emergency in recent weeks involving four KC-135 refueling tankers.
Each of the planes is about 50 years old, which has some wondering if the aging aircraft are as safe as they should be.

We decided to go for a city break rather than sun in Tenerife again this September. Other than a few days in the North East we haven’t been away since last March and wanted a change and hopefully some sun. The problem is getting flights from the north of England to the places we want to go to. We chose Valencia as we could fly from East Midlands – which was still a pain to get to as it involved the most notorious stretch of the M1 at five in the morning. In the end we had a fairly good journey, the new Ryanair business class pre-booked scheme worked quite well and bang on time as usual. It was dull when we landed with storms forecast all week, the sky was bright grey – the kiss of death to the photography I had in mind. I was full of cold and wishing I was at work. It did rain but it was overnight on our first night and didn’t affect us. There has been a drought for eleven months apparently and it rained on our first day there! The forecast storms didn’t materialise in Valencia but they got it elsewhere.
Over the course of a Monday to Sunday week we covered 75 miles on foot and saw most of the best of Valencia – The City of Bell Towers. The Old City covers a pretty large area in a very confusing layout. There was a lot of referring to maps – even compass readings! – a first in a city for us. The problem with photography in Valencia is that most of the famous and attractive building are closely built around, some have poor quality housing built on to them. Most photographs have to be taken from an extreme angle looking up. There are no high points as it is pan flat, there are a small number of buildings where you can pay to go up on to the roof for a better view and we went up them – more than once!
The modern buildings of The City of Arts and Sciences – ( Ciutat de Las Arts I de les Ciencies ) are what the city has more recently become famous for, with tourists arriving by the coachload all day until late at night. They must be photographed millions of times a month. We went during the day and stayed till dark one evening, I gave it my best shot but a first time visit is always a compromise between ambition and realism, time dictates that we have to move on to the next destination. I travelled with a full size tripod – another first – I forgot to take it with me to TCoAaS! so It was time to wind up the ISO, again! Needless to say I never used the tripod.
On a day when rain was forecast but it stayed fine, albeit a bit dull, we went to the Bioparc north west of the city, a zoo by another name. There are many claims made for this place, were you can appear to walk alongside some very large animals, including, elephants, lions, giraffe, rhino, gorillas and many types of monkey to name a few. It is laid out in different geographical regions and there is very little between you and the animals, in some cases there is nothing, you enter the enclosure through a double door arrangement and the monkeys are around you. It gets rave reviews and we stayed for most of the day. The animals it has to be said gave the appearance of extreme boredom and frustration and I felt quite sorry for them.
The course of The River Turia was altered after a major flood in the 50’s. The new river runs west of the city flanked by a motorway. The old river, which is massive, deep and very wide between ancient walls, I can’t imagine how it flooded, has been turned into a park that is five miles long. There is an athletics track, football pitches, cycle paths, restaurants, numerous kids parks, ponds, fountains, loads of bridges, historic and modern. At the western end closest to the sea sits The City of Arts and Sciences – in the river bed. Where it meets the sea there is Valencia’s urban Formula One racetrack finishing in the massive marina built for The Americas Cup. The race track is in use as roadways complete with fully removable street furniture, kerbs, bollards, lights, islands and crossings, everything is just sat on the surface ready to be moved.
We found the beach almost by accident, we were desperate for food after putting in a lot of miles and the afternoon was ticking by. What a beach, 100’s of metres wide and stretching as far as the eye could see with a massive promenade. The hard thing was choosing, out of the dozens of restaurants, all next door to each other, all serving traditional Paella – rabbit and chicken – as well as seafood, we don’t eat seafood and it constituted 90% of the menu in most places. Every restaurant does a fixed price dish of the day, with a few choices, three courses and a drink. Some times this was our only meal besides making the most of the continental breakfast at the hotel. We had a fair few bar stops with the local wine being cheap and pleasant it would have been a shame not to, there would have been a one woman riot – or strike!
On our final day, a Sunday, we were out of bed and down for breakfast at 7.45 as usual, the place was deserted barring a waiter. We walked out of the door at 8.30 – in to the middle of a mass road race with many thousands of runners, one of a series that take place in Valencia – apparently! We struggled to find out the distance, possibly 10km. The finish was just around the corner so off we went with the camera gear, taking photos of random runners and groups. There was a TV crew filming it and some local celebrity (I think) commentating. Next we came across some sort of wandering religious and musical event. Some sort of ritual was played out over the course of Sunday morning in various locations, it involved catholic priests and religious buildings and another film crew. The Catholic tourists and locals were filling the (many) churches for Sunday mass. Amongst all of this we had seen men walking around in Arab style dress – the ones in black looked like the ones from ISIS currently beheading people – all carrying guns. A bit disconcerting. We assumed that there had been some sort of battle enactment. We were wrong, it hadn’t happened yet. A while later, about 11.30 we could hear banging, fireworks? No it was our friends with the guns. We were caught up in total mayhem, around 60 men randomly firing muskets with some sort of blank rounds, the noise, smoke and flames from the muzzles were incredible. We were about to climb the Torres de Serranos which is where, unbeknown to us, the grand, and deafening, finale was going to be. We could feel the blast in our faces on top of the tower. Yet again there was a film camera in attendance. I couldn’t get close ups but I got a good overview and shot my first video with the 5D, my first in 5 years of owning a DLSR with the capability. I usually use my phone ( I used my phone as well). Later in the day there was a bullfight taking place, the ring was almost next to our hotel, in the end we had other things to do and gave it a miss, it was certainly a busy Sunday in the city centre, whether it’s the norm or not I don’t know.
There is a tram system in Valencia but it goes from the port area into the newer part of the city on the north side, it wouldn’t be feasible to serve the historic old city really. A quick internet search told me that there are 55,000 university students in the city, a pretty big number. I think a lot of the campus is on the north side and served by the tram although there is a massive fleet of buses as well. There is a massive, very impressive market building , with 100’s of stalls that would make a photo project on its own, beautiful on the inside and out but very difficult to get decent photos of the exterior other than detail shots owing to the closeness of other buildings and the sheer size of it. Across town, another market has been beautifully renovated and is full of bars and restaurants and a bit of a destination in its own right.
A downside was the all too typical shafting by the taxi drivers who use every trick in the book to side step the official tariffs and rob you. The taxi from the airport had a “broken” meter and on the way home we were driven 22 km instead of the nine that is the actual distance. Some of them seem to view tourists as cash cows to be robbed at all costs. I emailed the Marriot hotel as they ordered the taxi, needless to say no answer from Marriot – they’ve had their money. We didn’t get the rip off treatment in the bars etc. that we experienced in Rome, prices are very fair on most things, certainly considering the city location.
All in all we had a good trip and can highly recommend Valencia.

I don’t think some people care about our planet. Self obsessed not caring about others or our Council who will now take up the burden of this problem at a cost to us all.

The DeKalb Recorders Court is in line for a major shake up following the recent grand jury investigation that found a crisis of leadership, lack of accountability and pervasive staffing and physical problems at the court.
CEO Burrell Ellis said his administration is already making changes at the court that processes more than 230,000 traffic and misdemeanor citations a year and that he will install new leadership when Chief Judge R. Joy Walker’s current four-year term ends on Dec. 31.
“I agree with the grand jury that we need new leadership at the court,” he said Tuesday.
But on other issues pertaining to technology improvements, and renovations and expansion of the court, he said he did not want to be pinned down now about what might or might not be include in his proposed 2010 budget.
“We are considering all options at this point,” he said.
Ellis said that he and the Board of Commissioners will work collaboratively to address the concerns raised in the grand jury report and that Public Safety director William Miller is already at work clarifying the management and leadership issues raised by the grand jury.
DeKalb Commissioner Sharon Barnes Sutton, who chairs the BOC’s Public Safety Committee, said she is anticipating a complete overhaul of the Recorder’s Court and is now scouring the grand jury’s recommendations to come up with policies that will eliminate the Court’s problems.
“We are going one by one at these recommendations,” she said. “At this point, it is still a work in progress. It is not a fast process.”
Barnes Sutton, who represents District 4, said many of the grand jury’s recommendations will require expenditures at a time when the county is cutting back in the face of declining revenues, but that changes at the Court has to be a top priority.
“It is something that has to be addressed,” she said. “We have to make it work.”
The court, which collects fines for traffic and code violations, projects revenues of $21.4 million in 2009. But Barnes Sutton cautions that while it is tempting to view Recorder’s Court as a revenue source, that it is court of law.
“We can’t look at every ticket as revenue,” she said.
If the Court is operating properly, the District Four Commissioner said the county will have a more realistic expectation of its operations.
The grand jury investigation came in the wake of recent indictments of three former Recorders Court employees for a ticket-fixing scam while they worked at the court; a study that found an estimated $20 million in uncollected revenue since 2000, and chronic long lines, crowded and cramped conditions at the court on Camp Circle in Decatur.
It found widespread breakdown in the court’s operations and identified a failure to address ticket fixing inside the court, exercise due diligence, adequately account for funds, follow the law and properly assess fines and enforce warrants.
Walker, who has been the chief judge since 2002 declined to speak about the report.
“Unfortunately, I am forbidden by the current administration from making any statements to the press,” she said in an e-mail.
Even though Ellis said Walker was mistaken about being forbidden to speak to a reporter, he did not give her permission to speak.
Instead in an Oct. 21 email, his communication director Shelia Trapier Edwards said that Ellis is preparing responses to the issues raised by the grand jury report.
“He wanted me to remind you that prior to issuing their report, the grand jury interviewed Judge Walker and the information obtained from her was utilized in drafting their report,” she said.
Ellis promised to provide a copy of his responses once it has been submitted to the grand jury.
Competency of leadership
In its report to DeKalb Superior Court judges at the end of its term in August, the grand jury said the Recorder’s Court’s “dysfunctional organization” precluded it from being able “to clearly fix accountability and responsibility.”
It said the employer-employee relationship between Walker and Clerk of Court Joyce Head makes it impossible “to determine where the Clerk of Court’s role and duties begin and end versus that of the Chief Judge.”
It pointed out that the current relationship between the two officials, who are both appointed by the Board of Commissioners on the CEO’s recommendations, violates DeKalb County Code, which sets the chief judge’s primary duty as the oversight of the adjudication process, and requires the clerk to keep all records of the Court, collect all costs, fines and forfeitures and remit the same within 72 hours to county’s director of finance.
“We are unable to conclude why the Clerk’s duties and responsibilities had become a part of the Chief Judge’s overall duties,” it said.
The grand jury identified the following factors it said have given rise to how important it will be address the “competency of leadership and management at the court”:
Series of failures
- Failure to address ticket fixing inside the Recorder’s Court:
The grand jury said the testimony of the Chief Judge and the Clerk provided no assurances that there had been any policy, procedural or security measures taken by the Court after the indictment of some employees for “ticket fixing.”
“The Chief Judge indicated that she had not contacted anyone concerning the matter and that no one had contacted her,” the report said. “Clearly no ‘check and balance’ system was in place at the time of the alleged criminal actions, and frankly, the grand jury finds it deleterious for the head of Recorder’s Court to fail to take any initiative, action or corrective step once her former employees were implicated.
“These corrective actions should also have included a means to better supervise probation collections to make sure no wrongdoing occurs at that point in the process.”
- Failure to exercise due dilgence:
“We are unable to understand why the Chief Judge would dismiss more than 11,000 warrants of probationers solel;y upon the recommendation of JCS probation service therby resulting in a loss of revenue (fees and fines) to the County estimated to be $2.7 million.
- Failure to adequately account for funds:
The investigation found undeposited checks amounting to more than $3.5 million that were held Recorder’s Court for more than 16 months.
“When we posed questions to the Clerk of Court as to the reasons why probation checks that were received from the previous probation company were held and not deposited, her response was they were held so the checks could be reconciled to the indvidual probationer’s file.
“However, this same documentation indicated that less than 10 percent of the probation activities were properly posted to individual defendant’s cases.
- Failure to follow the law and properly assess fines/fees:
The grand jury found that the Court was not collecting from defendants and depositing the correct fees in the Sheriff’s Retirement Fund, despite a 2004 change in the law that increased the amount from $1 to $2. It said that Recorder’s Court was still only submitting $1 to the fund despite the training the Clerk received. It also said that the monies being paid into the fund were coming from other sources, but not actually being assessed to the individual defendants resulting in loss to the county.
“We are unable to estimate how much DeKalb may owe this fund or why the delay in paying $2 into the fund,” it said.
- Technology, technology, technology:
The grand jury said the Court’s existing SAS computer system produced unreliable data but it was unable to determine if the unreliable data is due to lack of training of staff or if the system lacks the capacity to handle the volume of information. It said the fact that a former clerk from a county with similar caseload as DeKalb Recorder’s Court praised the SAS system, leads it to think the problem in DeKalb may be untrained or improperly trained staff and not the system.
- Failure to appear in court and warrants enforcement
The grand jury called for improvements for these functions of the court. It asked for a letter to be developed and mailed to any citizen who fails to appear and or pay their fines to the court. It said the the letter should inform the citizen that a warrant may be issued or their driver’s license may be suspended if the matter is not resolved. It said the Chief Judge said such a letter was tried as pilot program and resulted in 20 percent return.
“The grand jury is of the opinion that 20 percent is far better than zero percent and would encourage the Court to reconsider its refusal to institute this program.”
- Physical structure:
The Grant Jury recommends refurbishment of the current courthouse and that a fourth courtroom be acquired and staffed so that all full-time judges have a courtroom.
“There is need for considerable cleaning and painting of the facility,” it said.
- Inadequate oversight by internal audit
The grand jury said that audits of the Recorder’s Court in 2005, 2006 and 2007 by the DeKalb County Internal Audit Division were insufficient and had allowed the problems at the court to exacerbate.
“We recommend future audits be far more comprehensive and thorough.”
Noting that it had spent considerable time reviewing Recorder’s Court, the grand jury said it would be greatly disappointed “to see our work end up in a file drawer gathering dust.”
“As importantly, Recorder’s Court requires the attention of the CEO and the County Commission,” it said.
