Forty hours after waking up in our bed, we landed in Melbourne. As soon as we got our car, we drove to this place in the middle of Melbourne because we were very anxious to start photographing lifers.
The first great surprise was that we didn’t have to pay for parking. Amazing, something very unusual for us in our cities.
We immediately spotted 7 or 8 lifers.
This is a common species, and we already knew that. The problem with common species, when we’re short on time, is that we don’t spend enough time with them, and then, when we return, we regret it.

We gaan weer even verder met de fotoreeks uit Duitsland van twee maanden terug. Op 25 september beloofde het voor het grootste deel van de dag zonnig weer te worden. Zoals wel vaker in het Maintal, hing er ‘s morgens een dik pak mist over de streek. De zon had even tijd nodig om door te breken, maar brak gelukkig tijdig door voor deze topper van de voormiddag. De avond voordien kregen we reeds de melding dat de volgende dag de 189 912 ‘Cream’ van Lokomotion richting het zuiden zou rijden. Deze zou door het Maintal komen met Paneuropa-shuttle 43827 van Bremen-Grolland naar Verona Q.E..
De ochtend werd na het kopen van een ontbijt gestart in Gambach, tussen de wijnranken. Als bij wonder vond de eigenaar het geen probleem dat we ons tussen de wijnranken bevonden. Gek genoeg mochten we nog enkele druiven proeven (die trouwens best lekker waren)! Ondanks de mist konden we er toch enkele leuke foto’s maken. Intussen ging men volop aan het werk om de druiven te plukken.
Met de suncalc-app hadden we bekeken waar we zouden moeten staan voor deze trein. Een plekje nabij Karlstadt zou voor deze trein ideaal zijn. Alvorens we hierheen reden, namen we nog even plaats in bij Himmelstadt. Bij aankomst merkten we een hele zwerm fotografen op. Zou er wat speciaals op komst zijn? Zo snel als we konden, gingen we ook ter plekke staan. Achteraf bleken de fotografen ook voor deze BR189 hier te staan.
Na een dik kwartier stonden de drie fotografen met ladder en hoogstatief paraat. Het werd plots behoorlijk druk met treinen vanuit het noorden. We waren blijkbaar net op het goeie moment aangekomen. Ook de Paneuropa-shuttle was al diverse keren gemeld onderweg. Tot onze verbazing kwam hij een pak vroeger door dan we hadden verwacht. Het ging nog net goed in Himmelstadt met de zonnestand.
We zien de 189 912 van Lokomotion Gesellschaft für Schienentraktion mbH voorbij Himmelstadt passeren en voor ruim tien lenzen poseren met Paneuropa-shuttle 43827 uit Bremen-Grolland naar Verona-Quadrante Europa.

Theoretically, each customer was supposed to scan the "QR code for the place" with his/her smartphone, which then displayed a so-called "health QR code": if it was green, it meant there is no problem, if it was yellow, the customer would be refused and, if it was red, everyone, whether the customer with the red QR code or the shop assistants who were present, would be arrested and taken to a concentration camp for quarantine.

I've been to Brugge a few times now and have got to know many of the famous haunts. This spot is a Mecca for tourists and photographers alike with the dog leg in the canal, the ornate brick buildings and the towering Belfry in the background.
We were on my cycling clubs spring tour; Brugge is a short hop over the English Channel for us, (two hours by ferry), and a 65 mile bike ride. Lucky enough we had a car and a van for backup so I was able stow some of my photographic kit.
Late one night I was able to extricate myself from the usual socialising and leg it to this spot approximately a mile from our hotel. Thankfully most of the tourists, (yes I know I'm one), had left the city or were tucked away in their hotels for the evening. Blue hour was coming to an end and thankfully the canal was mirror calm. The huge tungsten lights gave the scene a surreal quality with their orange glow which allowed me to capture this gorgeous night scene.
7 exposure, tripod mounted hdr -3 - +3. Nikon D700 with 16 - 35 f4 vr @ 22mm. ISO 800, exposure 1/5 - 25 sec at f9. Post processing via adobe camera raw, photomatix, & photoshop with topaz clarity and de noise plugins. I really had to mess around with the pp to try and remove banding in the blue sky. Anyone ever come across this problem?

This is the north end of main street on a very foggy early Saturday morning. This is quite unusual for it to be this vacant and lonely looking!
It was during our warmer and foggy weather after Christmas. Climate change . . . always a great debate!

Ook in 2023 organiseerde de Stoom Stichting Nederland een speciale Kerst Express naar de kerstmarkt in Aachen. Op de koude zaterdagochtend vertrok de SSN 23 023 met de SSN rijtuigenstam vanuit Rotterdam Alexander richting de grensovergang bij Venlo. Vanwege de verwachte drukte in verband met omgeleid goederenverkeer over Venlo, werd de SSN 23 023 en niet de SSN 01 1075 ingeschakeld. De SSN 23 023 kan namelijk met tender voorop rijden op de hoofdbaan, en dus werd het probleem met driehoeken voor nu getackeld. Echter heeft de SSN 23 023 geen PZB ingebouwd en dus hield voor haar de rit op in Venlo. Vanaf Venlo was het de Centralbahn 110 278 die de trein mocht verzekeren tot aan Aachen, welke de laatste jaren toch wel de stamloc is voor alle Centralbahn gerelateerde Sonderzüge in de Euregio.
Gezien ik deze ochtend en middag weer wat vrije tijd had besloot ik 's ochtends de wekker te zetten. Er zat wat zon in de verwachtingen, en het leek er van tevoren op dat vooral het midden van het land getrakteerd zou worden op een flinke hoeveelheid zon. Om eerlijk te zijn was ik zelf alweer de Kerst Express vergeten, mede omdat deze naar verwachting maar weinig in de zonnige regio's zou sporen. Toen ik om 7:30 dan wakker werd was het veel bewolkter dan verwacht en gezien ik vrij moe was besloot ik maar om verder schaapjes te gaan tellen. Zo werd er toch nog anderhalf uur doorgeslapen en toen ik tegen 9 uur nog eens polshoogte nam was de voorspelde zon op de meeste plekken nog steeds in geen velden of wegen te bekennen. Juist rondom Venlo, waar het zogenaamd bewolkt zou blijven, ontstond een groot blauw gat. Ik zat even te denken wat ik moest gaan doen, en toen bedacht ik me ineens dat ik nog de Kerst Express kon gaan fotograferen. Ik zat wat krap in de tijd en de trein met stoomloc op Nederlandse grond fotograferen zat er al niet meer in. Maar ik zie liever een Duitse Altbau locomotief en een plek na Venlo kon ik nog wel halen.
Vanuit Oss werd koers gezet naar het net over de grens gelegen Breyell. Daar werd uiteindelijk het welbekende veld in gelopen langs het enkelsporige traject, wat anno 2023 toch nog wel een apart gezicht blijft voor zo'n internationale spoorlijn. Tijdens het lopen kwam de losse Centralbahn 110 278 me tegemoet gereden, en kijkende op de klok wist ik dat de trein dan niet op tijd uit Venlo zou vertrekken. Dat kwam prima uit, want zodoende kon de zon iets verder door draaien wat dan het licht weer ten goede kwam. Met ietwat koude handen werd het statief weer eens de lucht in gehesen en kon het wachten beginnen. Naar verwachting zat er geen andere boeiende trein in de pijplijn. De locwissel in Venlo vond uiteindelijk nog vrij snel plaats, maar een vertraagde Eurobahn zorgde er toch nog voor dat uiteindelijk met ongeveer 30 minuten vertraging vertrokken werd uit Venlo. Nadat als eerst de ICE en als tweede de Eurobahn voorbij waren gekomen, klonken de overwegbellen van de slagboomloze overweg verderop opnieuw.
Het is 11:28 als de Stahlblaue Centralbahn 110 278 Breyell binnenrijdt met de SSN Kerst Express 13401 vanuit Rotterdam Alexander naar Aachen Hbf. In de trein bevinden zich passagiers die allen onderweg zijn naar de kerstmarkt in Aachen. Nadat alle inkopen zijn gedaan, de glühwein is opgedronken en de buikjes rond zijn gegeten, zullen ze de reis weer in tegenovergestelde richting uitvoeren. Op deze manier begon voor mij de laatste maand van het jaar in ieder geval goed!
I have seen this Agile wallaby in my backyard a few times. I have spoken to the local wildlife carer and he said that the missing arm and the deformed arm was probably caused by a dingo attack. She must find it difficult to get around because they do use their arms for mobility when they are not hopping with their legs and also cleaning themselves.

During the very early hours of this morning, Aurizon train 9819, led by 2313D and 2315D had a fire on board one of the locomotives which caused it to fail. The train as seen was stranded on the mainline just below the crest of Baking Board Hill. Rescue locomotives were sent from Willowburn Yard, Toowoomba, and they arrived around 1140. The several hours delay caused a choke on traffic with 9821 stranded in the Cameby Downs Mine, Columboola, train 9L10 in Chinchilla and train 9L12 at Macalister. Watco's livestock train 67S3 was also east bound on the wrong side. 9L12 couldn't travel on to Warra as the loop there has a railway crossing on it at the western end.
Years ago, I always find it is easier for me to make vertical (portrait) compositions.
Recently I tried to make more horizontal compositions than vertical ones.
This is one of the archive pictures taken in my Banff vacation which is in portrait format.

I showed my Canadian Rockies trip pictures to my friend.
And he quickly noticed my problem here. I had too many portrait (vertical) compositions,
I can easily see vertical scene but not horizontal ones. He advised me that landscape (horizontal) composition is naturally more suitable for scenic and landscape as the name suggested.
How I can practice more on landscape composition? Do you have any ideas and suggestions for me dear friends?

Vanwege problemen met de normale 189'ers uit de 28x reeks van TXL werden er bij uitzondering Italiaans geschikte 189'ers ingezet. Voordeel van deze serie is dat er een aantal leuke exemplaren tussen zitten zoals de Paardenloc 189 997. Op zondag reed de 189 989 de Numushuttle zoals we hier zien bij Haaften.

Almost an hour down, Merchant Navy British India Line approaches Settle Junction on its Journey to Scarborough its 11 coach load meant problems with adhesion on the frosty rails soon after leaving Carnforth, some great driving by Chris Cubitt got the engine underway twice after coming to a stand on the curves and inclines.

Class 37 D6700 departs southwards from Quorn and Woodhouse on the Great Central Railway, with a short freight. [Pole, 3/6 sections (~4m)]

We started the day here, and initially walked to the south end of the station for shots passing the signals. However, as it was early April the shadows of the increasingly taller trees on the east side of the line were a problem, although they did begin to recede before we moved on. This was the last angle we did here, and the penultimate run-past - although the train is actually propelling back towards the station. I shot the next one with the pole one section lower, but the tree in the background on the left isn't so dominant.
