After a disappointing couple of days in Bryce Canyon, I moved on to my next location which was to be Kodachrome Basin National Park, which is located between Bryce Canyon and the Grand Staircase Escalante Region of Utah. I found a great site in the primitive campground at the back of the park, I think I like this campground better than the front campground because of the dirt road leading in to it. This prevents most RV's from attempting access and is a much more serene environment, although the front campground has free showers but they can be used by all visitors, so I seized the opportunity. :)

This is the Bryce View Campground and is named so because its view overlooks not just Kodachrome Basin but also Bryce Canyon, which can be seen here off in the distance with a spectacular sunset in progress. Wouldn't you know it, the day I leave Bryce the sky explodes over it. Bah!! I guess a fourth trip to Bryce is on the itinerary in the future. "If at first you don't succeed try try again" is what I was taught. :)

I found this tree just off of the dirt road that leads back to some of the more remote formations in the park. It sits perched atop a red stone formation and stands only waist high. I tried to get a POV and composition that portrayed this tree as much bigger and an alternate composition capitalizing on it's stunted nature. I ended up liking this one better.

I am considering this to be an FDR image "Full Dynamic Range." Not an HDR image. HDR is usually associated with software designed specifically for that purpose. The problem with these software solutions is that by the time you get something you like, they introduce strong haloing properties and unpleasant artifacts which give it a fake unnatural look. By blending exposures manually you control what aspects of each exposure will be included in your final result, leading ultimately to a "Full Dynamic Range" image. Maybe we can start differentiating the two different types of processes. Have you ever had someone ask "Is it HDR" I like being able to say "NO", then again, if they have to ask then I'm getting close to real looking FDR photos.

Thanks for taking the time to take a look at my photos, and as always, your views, comments, faves, and support are greatly appreciated!! Have a great day everybody!! :)

So no one knew, not even him, the problems he would find

On the day he journeyed deep into his mind

I close my eyes, I go far away

Away from the battlefield

In my dreams, well

Here I will enjoy it

Where innocence plays with all the laughing children

The kind who are crying right now

A taste of freedom from the pain

Of everything here I see

Life is sweet but I took it all for granted

And now I don't know if I could ever tell you

Just what we permit, we allow

Allow me to forget the life, I've made my own

I've held this nation in my hand and yet it's not my home

Oh, allow me just one answer and one reason why

Why this refugee of the family of man must die?

Tell me why....

.......

Why be moody when you can shake your booty?

This is an image I likely wouldn't have posted, but after an interesting conversation with Flickr friend Flaushi & Friends on a swan she captured out on the ocean, I decided to share.

I had heard there was an owl at the lake not too far from work, so I decided to take a second trip (first trip was unsuccessful) after my shift to look for her. My daughter and faithful Border Collie, Bandit came along on the adventure.

After looking for a short time I spotted her out on the docks and walked around the shore trying to find a half decent angle to photograph her. In the meantime, a pair of mute swans swam over to see if we had brought them any goodies. I ignored them at first, since the owl had my full attention, but one of the two was quite persistent. He (or she) came right up to shore, stood up tall and was almost beak to nose with Bandit. Bandit was quite entertained and went into his usual OCD dance bouncing up and down on his hind legs and licking the ice at his feet. The swan wasn't at all phased and stretched out his long neck with an expectant look on his face. When he finally decided I had nothing for him, he swiftly ruffled his feathers and turned away from me. This was captured as he swam away glancing back with a look of disgust at my insensitivity for showing up empty handed.

Kirstenbosch is an important botanical garden nestled at the eastern foot of Table Mountain in Cape Town. The garden is one of 10 National Botanical Gardens covering five of South Africa's six different biomes and administered by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI). Prior to 1 September 2004, the institute was known as the National Botanical Institute.

Kirstenbosch places a strong emphasis on the cultivation of indigenous plants. When Kirstenbosch was founded in 1913 to preserve the flora native to the South Africa’s territory, it was the first botanical garden in the world with this ethos, at a time when invasive species were not considered an ecological and environmental problem.

In my case I'll be seeing you the day after tomorrow. I won't be able to watch the last episode of Game of Thrones until Tuesday, so I've decided to stay off the internet until then. I bet tomorrow there'll be people galore who'll be ranting like mad about how the story didn't end the way they wanted it to. First world problems LOL

It's a very interesting plant the Brunnera, grown mainly for its exotic ground cover, almost succulent foliage. It has.largish, ornate leaves and wehn they begin to show again after winter it also sends out these lovely little flowers. This variety is called 'Jack Frost' .

I'll paste a photo of the foliage in the comments below so you can see......

As I turned, the world around me altered abruptly; vehicles, buildings and the people that operated and maintained them became transparent, and somehow time itself seemed to speed up. The ghostly remains of once tangible people flittered before my eyes, leaving behind them faint echoes that slowly faded into nothingness. That which was corporeal now appeared as if rendered in spirit. I thought at once of the charlatan, Crowley, and his Magick, but quickly dismissed the notion that such a man could bear any relationship with the truth now being revealed before my eyes: that reality was not as it seemed.

Turning further, my eyes alighted on the man. His left arm, raised in an almost defensive posture, was encased in some kind of satanic machine. I could see little wisps of steam rising from the elbow joint and a subtle orange glow that hinted at the incredible furnace that must lurk somewhere within. Only God knows what strange powers might be required to build such a device; as advanced as our science was at that time, it seemed to me inadequate for such artifice. I had, however, no doubt that this machine was the cause of my abstraction from the material plane and that this man must be confronted, before all that we held dear became lost.

I composed myself, stood tall, and approached the man.

“Hello,” he said. “My name’s Barry.”

NB. You’ll no doubt be pleased to learn that Barry holds no sinister plans concerning the ultimate fate of the universe; he is, in fact, a cake designer.

Usual caveats etc.

Dunes, Blowing Dust. © Copyright 2023 G Dan Mitchell.

A late-afternoon spring dust storm sweeps across sand dunes, Death Valley National Park.

This was a wild scene. By late afternoon it was clear that high winds and blowing dust were on their way. We hunkered down for a while and ate an early dinner while waiting to see what would develop. The winds continued to build and the sand and dust were heading more and more in our direction. These conditions are both compelling and extremely uncomfortable, but my desire to photograph overcame my common sense and I headed out.

Since the winds were blowing from to my left and a bit behind me, I decided to head to an elevated spot where I would at least not be directly the blowing sand. From this location I could look down and across the dunes and the clouds of sand sweeping across them. The wind was still a problem, a big problem actually. It was blowing so hard that even my relatively stout tripod was useless, so I leaned against a fixed object, raised the shutter speed, turned on image-stabilization and hoped for the best. It was literally impossible to hold the camera steady, so I resorted to timing my exposures for brief moments when things at least slowed down a little bit.
