Monotype Caster Information

The composition caster casts individual letters. This is undertaken by causing molten metal to solidify by allowing the (soon to become) working faces of type to come into contact with a succession of moulds that form the shapes of the required letters. These letters are then assembled in correct relationship to each other.

The caster requires programming. The necessary instructions are fed through the medium of holes in a punched tape, which is no more complicated than the punched roll that causes a pionola to produce its music automatically. Each line of perforations is a code signal that instructs the caster to produce a character or space by ensuring that the right matrix (mobile character mould) is placed precisely over the mould (static body mould) at the right instant.

As the roll is unwound on the caster tower, compressed air is fed through the holes in the paper into small bore pipes beneath them. At the other end of the pipes are small pistons, which react to the air pressure by pushing up pins mounted into two flat-surfaced blocks, generally one pin in each block at one time. These pins transmit instructions to mechanical members that are moving towards them, by rising to arrest their movement and so position any given matrix over the mould.

Almost every moving part of the machine gets its motion from a battery of cams revolving at the left-hand side of the machine. The operations that lead to the creation of a single piece of type are timed in degrees around a circle of 360oc /one revolution of a camshaft. In practice it takes three revolutions for the complete sequence that enable one piece of type to be cast, ejected from the mould and pushed to the type channel.

What better way to celebrate Wu-Tang’s 20 year anniversary than with the release of Wu-Sciples, a ten color print celebrating one of the rawest groups in music. This print has been a long time in the making for us at Two Rabbits. When we had the idea we knew only one person could illustrate it right, Adam Hathorn aka Honkey Kong. We were already major fans of Adams work. He has illustrated jobs for us, been a great host when we were in San Diego and he is one of the best tattoo artist we know. Adam is also Wu obsessed, like us. With that said here is Adam in his own words…

“So far as my memory takes me, my introduction to Wu Tang was when 36 chambers was released in 93. I had to wikipedia that, my memory is not that good. My friend Strobe Beats played me “Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthing ta Fuck Wit” on a walk man, or some shit, in the cafeteria. The beat made me wanna punch people, much like the hard core and punk rock music that I was listening to at the time. I immediately got a copy, and it was on constant rotation. That was what got me back into hip hop music. Previously I was listening to alot of Public Enemy and alot of the native tongue stuff, Tribe Called Quest, LONS, De La etc. After that hip hop was getting boring. I was young and turned to hard core music, especially in Boston where it thrived at that time. When Wu came with that raw sound with production that was stripped down and unpolished, it was an easy step back in. Wu Tang has been a huge part of music in my life since. I’m sure there’s been few days since that have passed without me hearing Wu in some form. I tattoo all day, or draw all day, so there’s some form of music always playing, and there’s plenty on shuffle.

I was lucky enough to be asked by the guys at Two Rabbits Studios to create the “Wu-sciples” print. Their idea was solid out ofthe gate. Wu Tang last supper with Big Baby Jesus front and center. I said sign me up. The illustration took a bit to do since they’re artist deep, but nonetheless a fun project. Thanks for choosing me to do this print, see you Saturday for the show….. Wu Tang is FOREVER!” -Adam Hathorn

Greater access to 3D printing(www.cadcam.org/why-use-a-solidworks-3d-printing-service/ ) as well as its added benefits is convincing the next generation of product designers and engineers, in industries ranging from aerospace to education, to pursue additive manufacturing as a career. As this new group begins to make its way into the workforce, manufacturers and managers are revisiting more than just training initiatives, but their entire approach to applying 3D printing in the product development process. Additionally, it can provide accurate representations of 3D models and 2D drawings in a fast, reliable, and convenient way.

In my letterpress reference collection I have this interesting little print – normally framed in its originally frame of walnut. The print is printed by Brdr. Berling in Copenhagen approx. 1840 and is a rare example of Danish Compound Plates Printing – Congreve Printing. Congreve printing is/was a version of letterpress invented to print multicolour and relief prints in one pull on the iron hand press – giving a perfect registration, as all elements colors and embossing’s are printed at one time in one pull. The relative complexed printing method was invented by the English Artillery General William Congreve around 1824 as an attempt to improve and develop the printing and the safety of bank notes. Congreve printing never became a success, as it was very labour intensive, and was primary used for printing portraits of important persons.

This print is a portrait of the Danish King Christian VIII (1786-1839-1848). Before he became king of Denmark he was in 1814 shortly king of Norway, and gave at Eidsvoll together with the Norwegian national assembly the Norwegians the free and independent constitution on May 17th 1814.

Congratulations to Norway
