Printing Press from the printworks of James Ballantyne and Company, Pauls Work, North Back of Canongate, on which the 'Waverley' novels of Sir Walter Scott were produced. Plaque on press reads '1796 Ballantyne Press, used by Ballantyne in the printing of the Waverley Novels'. Known as the Ballantyne Press it dates from the late 18th Century- a plaque gives the date as 1796, the year when James Ballantyne's first practical connection with printing was established, when he became editor and manager of a new weekly newspaper, the 'Kelso Mail'. James Ballantyne (1772 - 1833) moved his printing business from Kelso to Edinburgh, in 1802, following the success of Scott's 'Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border'. The firm remained at Paul's Work until 1870 when, due to the Encroachments of the Waverley Railway station, it moved to Newington. A branch was set up in London in 1878 and by 1916 the Edinburgh print works had been discontinued.

Light-weight and flexible, this handbound vibrant orange suede leather journal with suede tie wrap-- 7x5" 120 pages-- is perfect for daily reflections.
Materials
>About the paper: Zerkall Book, cream.
My current favorite book paper! I love the luminescence of this rich cream paper. The weight (145 gsm) is ideal for blank journals in my opinion. Writing on this versus copy paper is a world of difference. This difference accounts for the difference in price. But don't take my word for it! I have many journal styles featuring Zerkall Book paper. And, know that you won't find another journal binder using such high-end paper (designed for 1st edition printing) in a blank journal.
Zerkall Renker & Sohne paper mill, run by the Renker family in its fourth generation, dates from 16th century in the valley of the river Kall between Cologne and Aachen in Germany. Although the mill now only manufactures mouldmade papers, their sheets mirror papers of the past while incorporating modern technology to insure stability and permanence. Zerkall mixes exacting amounts of cotton rag and high alpha cellulose to obtain sheets that are strong, yet able to absorb ink without bleeding. All their papers are acid free, neutral sized, alkaline buffered with calcium carbonate and contain no optical brighteners.
>About the endpaper: Multi-colored Marble Lokta handmade paper
Lokta paper is handmade traditionally in Nepal from the bark of Daphne Papyracea called LOKTA. These plants are found in the forest of Nepal between the altitudes of 6500ft to 9500ft, sustainably grown.
The base is translucent and marbled fibers give great texture. My favorite endpaper (excepting dark papyrus)!
>About the cover: orange suede leather
As I select leather, I take care to choose hides that will stand up as a book cover, while also being easy to handle and lovely to hold. This suede, a heavier weight cow hide split suede fits the bill.
>About the binding: 4-ply waxed Irish linen

My second print on paper, the circles were either gouged out of the printing plate (we used Dahler board) or cut out and stuck on the surface. For the raised circles I chose to use textured wall paper and some thin artificial lace. Can you work out which is the lace and which the wallpaper?
a new technique for me, first seen on the www, which promises so many possibilities. I'm sure i'll try again.
The finished product:
A verse miscellany, printed by several hands. (Oxford: Printed in the Bibliography Room of the Bodleian Library, over-against the King's Arms, 2007)
After inking and polishing an engraved plate, Don showed us intaglio printing using an old press. I saw the same type of press, maybe even this exact one, on a documentary about the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
This most recent calotype has only just survived processing where it lost a lot of reduced silver into the developer solution. The result is blotchy and weaker than what I would expect. Therefore the print needs more contrast, especially to save the important shadows. Having set the frame to face just blue skies for two hrs I am now ready to give it more light but still diffused. Therefore, the shower curtain has been dismounted and used here to weil the harsh sunlight at 5 30 pm in the mid summer. I need to watch the sky all the time and check the progress of printing slowly. The negative has pretty good density but rather weak contrast. The sun may get covered by clouds so I am running a risk of not getting a good blast of direct sunlight in the end of exposure.
