Garrison Green was developed according to the principles of New Urbanism. The result -- a compact, pedestrian-friendly urban community that’s located just minutes from downtown Calgary. In addition to more than 1,000 homes in a variety of styles and price levels, Garrison Green also offers seniors and assisted living housing, as well as the Cypress Green affordable housing complex. This is thanks to a partnership between the city, province, CLC and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

Garrison Green is also home to Peacekeepers Park. This park is the site of an annual event that pays tribute to the men and women who serve in Canada’s peacekeeping forces. CLC is committed to honouring the past, while creating vibrant communities for Canadians.

Regarding the award-winning physicist Dr. Elliot McGucken at Princeton University, the late John Archibald Wheeler stated, "More intellectual curiosity, versatility and yen for physics than Elliot McGucken's I have never seen in any senior or graduate student. . . Originality, powerful motivation, and a can-do spirit make me think that McGucken is a top bet."

Dr. E would go on to heal the blind with his NSF-funded, award-winning Ph.D. dissertation which also laid down the foundations of Light Time Dimension Theory. Over the years, LTD Theory added foundational *physical* postulates, principles, and equations en route to becoming numerous books, with this one forming the simple, illustrated introduction.

The great thing about the beach is that it presents an entirely different universe from season to season, from day to day, from hour to hour, from second to second, with the ever changing wind, tides, clouds, and sun. A split second with tumbling surf and a sinking sun can make a vast different, resulting in entirely different photographs.

1941 Chrysler Thunderbolt

One of a Kind

Walter P. Chrysler built his company on the principles of engineering excellence and innovation which had distinguished his career in the 19th century railroads, at Buick and Willys Overland.

The first Chrysler featured an efficient and powerful high compression six-cylinder engine, force-feed lubrication, tubular front axle and four-wheel hydraulic brakes, refinements then unprecedented in series production automobiles at the time.

The success of these and other innovations in 1934 culminated in Chryslers introduction of the Airflow, a streamlined, unit body breakthrough in automobile design.

Its timing could hardly have been worse.

Mired in the dashed expectations of the depression, customers were loath to experiment with something so new and intuitively untried and risky.

Sales plummeted and Chrysler quickly reverted to making more conventional looking automobiles.

Their mistake may largely be traced to springing the dramatically different Airflow with its distinctive appearance upon an unprepared audience.

But one remained immediately recognizable: The Copper Car.

It was built by LeBaron with a copper hardtop, sill trim and bumpers.

It survives in this unique, distinctive configuration today.

After its round of appearances it was sold to actor Bruce Cabot (First Mate Jack Driscoll in King Kong among many other roles).

In 1954 its engine was replaced by a Chrysler Hemi V-8.

It was acquired by the Harrahs Collection in 1960 and was bought during its 1985 dispersal auction by the most recent owner who two decades later commissioned a complete restoration by Chris Kidds Tired Iron Works.

During restoration the original Spitfire Eight engine was returned to its home under the Thunderbolts hood along with a dual carburetor induction system.

The drive system powering the retractable hardtop was re-engineered for smooth, reliable operation.

Completed in 2009 it debuted at the Amelia Island Concours d' Elegance where it won the Camille Jenatzy Award for the Most Audacious Exterior, then took third in class at the Pebble Beach Concours d' Elegance in August and a class win (scoring 100 points) at the Newport Beach Concours at the St. Regis Resort.

Everything about this car, as its recent 100 point score confirms, is to the highest standards of materials, craftsmanship, historical accuracy, fit, finish and function.

A dramatic statement of vision and innovation, with its brilliant copper hardtop and trim it is one of a kind, a dramatic statement of leadership in engineering, design and creativity in the 1940s, and no less a statement today.

Landscape photography is not only about traveling through space, but it is also about traveling through time. One may return to the same beach time and again throughout the seasons to find a million different universes, changing in an infinitude of manners with each passing wave.

Not only do we voyage outwardly to get the shot, but we travel even further inwardly. While I spend my year trekking along the John Muir Trail, and on through Zion, Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, Death Valley, and the Colorado Plateau, my heart always finds its home in these Malibu sea caves, where I have stood in awe during all hours of the day and night.

Included within are a few shots that only I have so far captured, including a miraculous winter solstice sunrise.

Best wishes throughout the coming year!

I love voyaging forth into nature to contemplate poetry, physics, the golden ratio, and the Tao te Ching! What's your favorite epic poetry reflecting epic landscapes? I recently finished a book titled Epic Poetry for Epic Landscape Photographers:

www.facebook.com/Epic-Poetry-for-Epic-Landscape-Photograp...

Did you know that John Muir, Thoreau, and Emerson all loved epic poetry and poets including Shakespeare, Milton, Homer, and Robert Burns?

I recently finished my fourth book on Light Time Dimension Theory, much of which was inspired by an autumn trip to Zion!

www.facebook.com/lightimedimensiontheory/

Via its simple principle of a fourth expanding dimension, LTD Theory provides a unifying, foundational *physical* model underlying relativity, quantum mechanics, time and all its arrows and asymmetries, and the second law of thermodynamics. The detailed diagrams demonstrate that the great mysteries of quantum mechanical nonlocality, entanglement, and probability naturally arise from the very same principle that fosters relativity alongside light's constant velocity, the equivalence of mass and energy, and time dilation.

Principles of Engineering and Technology Class 2012

Hepatica acutiloba - "Sharp-lobed Hepatica"

One of the Spring Ephemerals found here on the Paleozoic Plateau of northeast Iowa. It appears on our rich woodland soils from late March through late April.

Native Americans used a tea made from the leaves of this species to help with liver ailments, as a laxative and as a digestion aid. As a folk remedy by early settlers it was used similarly to treat fevers, poor digestion, liver ailments and coughs.

It's use as a treatment for liver ailments by Native Americans is a great example of the "Doctrine of Principles", the principle/theory that because the leaves were shaped like the liver, it could be used to treat problems with that particular part of the human body.

Objective 3: Elements and Principles of Design

Line – The vertical lines of the stems give a feeling of strength, and the implied vertical line between the shaded part of the wall and the lighter part of the wall adds to it. The random curved lines of the leaves themselves add a more natural, calm feel to the photo, even though it’s indoors.

Texture – The soft light give the leaves a smooth texture, and a soft, almost fluffy texture for the soil. The stems of the plants have a rougher texture. All of these things add interest and a more natural feel to the photo.

Shape – The random shape and location of leaves creates a bit of interest. The organic shape of the leaves are informal and more free flowing. The blurred background (the negative shapes) makes the positive shapes of the flowerpot and the plant stand out more. Also, the flower pot makes an incomplete oval shape that the brain tries to complete, so it draws the eye to that part of the photo.

Emphasis – The blurred background and the fact that the plant is on one of the rule of thirds lines emphasizes the subject. The bright green plant stands out since the background has no bright colours.

Form – The soft diffuse side lighting created by the sun shining through the curtain makes the plant look more 3D. One of the plant stems is further back and it isn’t as sharp as the other one, which creates depth.

Objective 4: Lighting

Since the sunlight is going through the curtains before it hits the subject, in this photo we have soft side lighting. I wanted to take a photo of both the plant as well as the flower pot, and it wouldn’t have as much unity if I took a picture like this outside. I also wouldn’t have the soft side lighting that I got from the curtain, instead I would have hard direct lighting.

Objective 5: Post Production (ex. dust/spot removal, resize, contrast, white balance, sharpening, borders, etc.)

First I sharpened the photo with unsharp mask to make the plant sharper. Then I added contrast with curves mostly to make the dark spots darker since the bright spots (eg. the window) were already very bright. Finally, I resized it to upload to Flickr.

Objective 6: Critique

I like that I got the background very blurred, one of the plant stems slightly blurred, and the other plant stem tack sharp.

I would have liked to remove at least the calendar and maybe some of the papers on the table before I took this photo, but since it’s all blurred it isn’t too bad.
