I returned again to this savory recipe that I found in the famous breakfast issue of Saveur magazine.

 

I ordered some shirred egg dishes, hoping that using the right-sized shallow dish I could get better results. Previously I found that the egg whites did not cook as quickly as the recipe promised. The dish didn't seem to help.

 

Here is the recipe, which I reformated to more conventional recipe format. I will try again soon using convection baking instead of the broiler. If that doesn't do it, I'll try a water bath.

 

Shirred Eggs

Serves two

 

1 tbsp unsalted butter

¼ cup cooked chopped spinach, squeezed to remove excess water

4 eggs

½ tomato

2 tbsp heavy cream

1 slice cooked chopped bacon

2 tbsp grated parmesan

½ tsp chopped fresh thyme

¼ tsp grated nutmeg

sea salt

freshly grated black pepper

 

Place oven rack 10" from broiler element. Turn on broiler to pre-heat. Grease two 8-oz shirred egg dishes with 1 tbsp unsalted butter. To each dish, add 2 tbsp of the spinach. With your fingers make two wells in each pile of spinach and crack two eggs into each dish.

 

Cut ½ tomato into 4 wedges. Nestle two wedges on opposite sides of each dish. Pour 1 tbsp of heavy cream into each dish. Add ½ the bacon to each dish.

 

Sprinkle each dish with 1 tbsp grated parmesan, ¼ tsp chopped fresh thyme, 1/8 tsp grated nutmeg, salt and pepper to taste. Transfer to oven rack and broil until the cheese is golden brown, the whites of the eggs are set, and the yolks are still slightly soft. About 5 minutes.

 

Transfer the dishes to serving plates lined with paper napkins to prevent the dishes from slipping.

En el evento, el Secretario de Seguridad Pública, Juan Marcos Granados Torres, destacó la importancia de que la autoridad municipal y los ciudadanos trabajen de manera coordinada, y en esta ocasión -recalcó- “Con la participación del Patronato y los jugadores del equipo de Gallos Blancos”.

 

“La autoridad municipal tiene la obligación de mejorar espacios públicos, en esta ocasión le vamos a poner un ingrediente adicional, el gran entusiasmo que siempre ha demostrado José Luis Alvarado, Ulises Zurita y los jugadores de Gallos Blancos con quienes vamos a realizar este ejercicio. Tenemos más de 30 colonias que hemos visitado en donde vecinos, ciudadanos y padres de familia, nos ayudan a embellecer las áreas públicas. Todos y cada uno de los jugadores de Gallos Blancos, son un verdadero ejemplo para estos niños, jóvenes, y qué mejor que vengan con nosotros a apoyarnos a pintar estas zonas.”

 

Por su parte, Margarita Luna Téllez Girón, Directora de Vinculación Social de la Secretaría de Seguridad Pública, resaltó la importancia de construir espacios que generen seguridad. Esto explicó, es derivado de los recursos federales de SUBSEMUN para proyectos de prevención social, en donde se ejecutan jornadas ciudadanas de marchas exploratorias.

 

“Recordarán que en fechas anteriores se hizo un recorrido en donde participaron colonos de Peñuelas, policías, personal de la Delegación y de Servicios Públicos. Fue en esta supervisión, en donde ustedes detectaron este punto como de riesgo en donde sentían que les generaba inseguridad. Este programa consiste en dotar de elementos como pinturas, luminarias, herramientas necesarias para mejorar áreas urbanas. Ustedes, deben tener el sentido de pertenencia y protección de esta zona. Solamente realizando esta obra, es como recuperamos el sentido de comunidad que se encuentra tan perdido.”

 

Agregó que “El día de hoy, la colonia Peñuelas, a través de esta jornada, puede construir seguridad, cambiando el aspecto urbano de este parque para recuperar la percepción más valiosa y apreciada de hoy, que es la de sentirse seguros por un esfuerzo común y corresponsable con la autoridad. Los invitamos a que así lo sigan haciendo, que reconstruyan el sentido de comunidad, venciendo el miedo con tan sólo una brocha.”

 

Asimismo, José Luis Alvarado Tapía, Presidente del Patronato de Club de Futbol Gallos Blancos A.C., comentó que “Nos da mucho gusto acudir y participar en este tipo de eventos. La comunidad de Peñuelas, fue electa por nuestra autoridad municipal para que fuera la primer colonia en donde de forma sucesiva, se irán rescatando espacios a favor de todos los niños, jóvenes y adultos de cada colonia. Tenemos un equipo muy comprometido con su entorno social, con su Ciudad y con su afición. La Alcaldesa sabe que cuenta con nosotros para cualquier tipo de acciones en favor de todos ustedes.”

 

Finalmente, la Presidenta Municipal de Querétaro, en conjunto con el Patronato Queretano para el Fomento Deportivo de Gallos Blancos y la Secretaría de Seguridad Pública, firmaron la carta compromiso por la seguridad de las colonias.

 

Al término del evento, autoridades municipales encabezados por Zúñiga Hernández, el Patronato de Gallos Blancos, Seguridad Pública, vecinos del lugar y estudiantes realizaron actividades como pinta de bardas, plantación de árboles y rehabilitación del Parque Peñuelas.

Every year, 12,000 women in Pakistan die of birth complications. The Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) Services Component, implemented by MCHIP/Jhpiego, aims at preventing maternal, newborn, and child deaths by ensuring skilled birth attendance (SBA) through a total market approach, empowered community, timely referral of obstetric and neonatal complications to an emergency obstetric and newborn care (EmONC) facility, and improved access to child care.

 

Lack of electricity in remote areas is a major issue that often leads to obstetric complications and newborn deaths. Refrigerated storage is vital for the effectiveness of life saving drugs and vaccines. Ice boxes are used in remot areas of this purpose but it is an ineffective method especially when easy availability of ice is a problem. To overcome these issues, Lodhie Foundation in association with Maternal and Child Health Integrated Program/JHPIEGO, extended its Kavalcare program and provided a Solar Powered System to a remote clinic located at village Haji Usman Jhakro near Makli, District Thatta. System provides sufficient power to operate a small refrigerator, a fan and 3 lamps 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. It was designed, manufactured and installed by Shaan Technologies private Limited Karachi. After installation of Solar System in August 2014, this small remote clinic is serving a community of 10,000 plus persons who lives in village Haji Usman and surrounding areas. On an average 10 patients visits this clinic each day. Clinic also provides up to 15 birth attendance and new born care in a month.

On February 2, Secretary McDonald and I will host a VA national summit on Veteran suicide prevention. Why a national summit? Because Veteran suicide impacts all Americans and needs to be addressed in a coordinated effort with government and community stakeholders. And, because all Americans, and VA in particular, have a duty to help Veterans suffering from the hidden scars of military service that lead them to think suicide is their only option. We must do better and this summit will help us to determine our future course.

The “Preventing Veteran Suicide – A Call to Action” summit will bring together VA and DoD leaders, mental health professionals, Veteran Service Organizations, Veterans and their families, and other key partners. These national leaders will direct their attention to how we can best help Veterans and their families access appropriate mental health services.

It will be an honor to welcome Susan and Richard Selke, as guests at the summit. Their son, Clay Hunt, was a Marine Corps Veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan who took his own life in 2011. Congress subsequently passed the Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans Act, which President Obama signed in February of last year. Their commitment to improving mental health care for Veterans like their son has been inspiring.

Also at the summit, Senator Elizabeth Dole will discuss the role of Caregivers and Dr. Ron C. Kessler of Harvard Medical School will deliver a presentation on “Researching Risk for Suicide among Veterans- What Are We Missing?” These are just two of the many supportive experts joining us for this important call to action.

We already know that America’s Veterans are at higher overall risk for suicide than the general public. Veterans suffering from conditions like posttraumatic stress, depression, insomnia, and chronic pain are particularly vulnerable. However, groundbreaking research shows us that Veterans who are fully engaged in VA care are at lower risk of suicide than those who are not. It is essential that information about resources for Veterans at risk for suicide is readily available to Veterans and those close to them.

We want Veterans to come to us, but we must also go to them and build effective networks of communication and care across communities and health organizations. We must be far more proactive and creative in our approach. I ask each of you to consider how you can make a difference.

I addressed our efforts yesterday in an op-ed that appeared in the Palm Beach Post and many other papers across the U.S. I encourage you to take a moment and read my op-ed.

Official: Fire at former Edison High could have been prevented

A distinctive, 109-year-old former school building that has been a magnet for illegal activity in the city's poorest neighborhood burned for more than two hours Wednesday, throwing into uncertainty a plan to redevelop it.

 

It took 18 fire engines spewing water to control the fire in the abandoned three-story structure in the Fairhill section of North Philadelphia.

 

Fire officials were investigating the cause. The hazardous building should have been demolished three years ago, City Controller Alan Butkovitz said Wednesday.

 

The former Edison High School and Julia de Burgos Middle School, 701 Lehigh Ave., has been closed since 2002 because it was unusable, said Philadelphia School District spokesman Fernando Gallard.

 

The building has had problems with thieves, vandals, and drug activity. The district had been trying to sell it since it was closed, Gallard said.

 

Butkovitz said that in 2008 he told the district to tear down the 475,000-square-foot building.

 

Not only could the fire "have been prevented, but it was pretty obvious that this was going to happen," Butkovitz said. "There were many warning signals for many years."

 

The School District put more fencing around the building to prevent burglaries, but Butkovitz called those efforts "temporary Band-Aids."

 

On June 30, Gallard said, the district sold the building for $600,000 to 701 W. Lehigh Partners, which includes Mosaic Development Partners L.L.C. and Orens Bros. Real Estate Inc.

 

After working on an agreement for two years, Mosaic signed a deal with the School District to bring a Save-A-Lot grocery store to the site, which would include tearing down the distinctive front section of the parcel.

 

The more-modern rear addition would be renovated as 56 apartments for low-income seniors. The total cost of the project was estimated at $11 million.

 

City Councilwoman Maria Quiñones Sánchez, whose Seventh District includes the site, said that she was unsure how the fire would affect the project's fate and that she was particularly concerned about damage to the building's rear.

 

The fire started at 1:31 p.m. in the southwest corner of the roof, said First Battalion Chief Richard Davison, and took two hours to bring under control.

Petra is a famous archaeological site in Jordan's southwestern desert. Dating to around 300 B.C., it was the capital of the Nabatean Kingdom. Accessed via a narrow canyon called Al Siq, it contains tombs and temples carved into pink sandstone cliffs, earning its nickname, the "Rose City." Perhaps its most famous structure is 45m-high Al Khazneh, a temple with an ornate, Greek-style facade, and known as The Treasury.

 

Petra Archaeological Park (PAP), which covers an area of 264 dunums (264,000 square meters) within Wadi Musa, is considered a touristic and archaeological site, as well as a World Heritage Site registered on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1985. The area encompasses a breathtaking landscape of pink-hued rock mountains, the focus of which is the amazing ancient Nabataean city of Petra, which was carved into the rock more than 2,000 years ago.

 

THE SIQ

It is the ancient main entrance leading to the city of Petra, starts at the Dam and ends at the opposite side of the vault, a split rock with a length of about 1200m and a width of 3 to 12m, and height up to about 80m; most of the rock is natural and another part was sculptured by the Nabataeans. The Siq, the main road that leads to the city, starts from the Dam and ends at the Treasury. It is a rock canal that measures 160 meters in length, 3 to 12 meters in width and reaches up to 80 meters in height. The main part of the Siq is created by natural rock formation and the rest is carved by the Nabataeans.

At the beginning of the Siq, one can still view the remains of the city’s gate. On both sides of the Siq, there are channels to draw water from Wadi Musa (the Valley of Moses), from outside the city to the inside.

From the right, it is evident that the water flowed through pottery pipes but the left channel is carved from the rock and covered with panels of stone, and there are spaces in place to filter water. At the start of the Siq the original Nabataean dams are visible, and these prevented the flooding in the Siq, and collected water for use. The floor of the Siq is paved with stone slabs, part of which can be viewed in its original location.

Aspects of the Siq were decorated with Nabataean sculptures, mostly representing gods. It is believed that the statues of gods and their sculptures were situated very close and even adjacent to the channels due to the Nabataean belief that water was sacred. In addition, on the left side there are idols called Sabinos Statues.

 

THE TREASURY (Al Khazna)

The siq opens up onto Petra’s most magnificent façade; the Treasury, or Al Khazna. It is almost 40 meters high and intricately decorated with Corinthian capitals, friezes, figures and more. The Treasury is crowned by a funerary urn, which according to local legend conceals a pharaoh’s treasure. Although the original function is still a mystery, The Treasury was probably constructed in the 1st century BC, However, in reality the urn represented a memorial for royalty. The Treasury consists of two floors with a width of 25.30 meters and a height of 39.1 meters.

The purpose of the Treasury is unclear: some archaeologists believed it to be a temple, while others thought it was a place to store documents. However, the most recent excavation here has unearthed a graveyard beneath the Treasury.

The Treasury comprises three chambers, a middle chamber with one on either side, the elaborately carved facade represents the nabataean engineering genius.

 

THE STREET OF FACADES

It is a name given to the row of monumental Nabataean tombs carved in the southern cliff face that lies past the Treasury and adjacent to the outer Siq., that when you pass the Treasury, the Siq begins to widen gradually as it reaches into an open area. On both sides, there are a number of Nabataean burial interfaces decorated with grindstones along with other decorations; and some of these interfaces were destroyed by natural factors, it is believed that these interfaces represents some of the senior officials in the city or princes.

The tomb Anesho is located in the far south of this group and overlooks the external Siq. Anesho was the Minister of Queen Nabatiyeh Shaqilh II, who ruled between 70 and 76 AD as guardians of the throne of her son, Rabil II. These tombs represent courtier in the middle of the first century AD.

 

THE THEATER

Carved into the side of the mountain at the foot of the High Place of Sacrifice, the theatre consists of three rows of seats separated by passageways. Seven stairways ascend the auditorium and it can accommodate 4000 spectators. the monument was carved in the the mountainside during the reign of King Aretas IV (4BC-AD27) the Romans rebuilt the stage back wall.

Igneous rocks form by the cooling & crystallization of hot, molten rock (magma & lava). If this happens at or near the land surface, or on the seafloor, they are extrusive igneous rocks. If this happens deep underground, they are intrusive igneous rocks. Most igneous rocks have a crystalline texture, but some are clastic, vesicular, frothy, or glassy.

 

Obsidian is readily identifiable. It is a glassy-textured, extrusive igneous rock. Obsidian is natural glass - it lacks crystals, and therefore lacks minerals. Obsidian is typically black in color, but most obsidians have a felsic to intermediate chemistry. Felsic igneous rocks are generally light-colored, so a felsic obsidian seems a paradox. Mafic obsidians are scarce, but they are also black and glassy.

 

Obsidian is an uncommon rock, but can be examined at several famous localities in America, such as Obsidian Cliff at the Yellowstone Hotspot (northwestern Wyoming, USA) and Big Obsidian Flow at the Newberry Volcano (central Oregon, USA).

 

Obsidian is moderately hard and has a conchoidal fracture (smooth and curved fracture surface), with sharp broken edges. Freshly-broken obsidian has the sharpest edges of any material known, natural or man-made (as seen under a scanning electron microscope).

 

Obsidian forms two ways: 1) very rapid cooling of lava, which prevents the formation of crystals; 2) cooling of high-viscosity lava, which prevents easy movement of atoms to form crystals. An example of obsidian that formed the first way is along the margins of basaltic lava flows at Kilaeua Volcano (Hawaii Hotspot, central Pacific Ocean). The obsidian sample seen here formed the second way.

The Icelandic horse is a breed of horse developed in Iceland. Although the horses are small, at times pony-sized, most registries for the Icelandic refer to it as a horse. Icelandic horses are long-lived and hardy. In their native country they have few diseases; Icelandic law prevents horses from being imported into the country and exported animals are not allowed to return. The Icelandic displays two gaits in addition to the typical walk, trot, and canter/gallop commonly displayed by other breeds. The only breed of horse in Iceland, they are also popular internationally, and sizable populations exist in Europe and North America. The breed is still used for traditional sheepherding work in its native country, as well as for leisure, showing, and racing.

  

Developed from ponies taken to Iceland by Norse settlers in the 9th and 10th centuries, the breed is mentioned in literature and historical records throughout Icelandic history; the first reference to a named horse appears in the 12th century. Horses were venerated in Norse mythology, a custom brought to Iceland by the country's earliest settlers. Selective breeding over the centuries has developed the breed into its current form. Natural selection has also played a role, as the harsh Icelandic climate eliminated many horses through cold and starvation. In the 1780s, much of the breed was wiped out in the aftermath of a volcanic eruption. The first breed society for the Icelandic horse was created in Iceland in 1904, and today the breed is represented by organizations in 19 different nations, organized under a parent association, the International Federation of Icelandic Horse Associations.

Icelandic horses weigh between 330 and 380 kilograms (730 and 840 lb)[1] and stand an average of 13 and 14 hands (52 and 56 inches, 132 and 142 cm) high, which is often considered pony size, but breeders and breed registries always refer to Icelandics as horses.[2][3] Several theories have been put forward as to why Icelandics are always called horses, among them the breed's spirited temperament and large personality.[4][5] Another theory suggests that the breed's weight, bone structure and weight-carrying abilities mean it can be classified as a horse, rather than a pony.[6] The breed comes in many coat colors, including chestnut, dun, bay, black, gray, palomino, pinto and roan. There are over 100 names for various colors and color patterns in the Icelandic language.[2][3] They have well-proportioned heads, with straight profiles and wide foreheads. The neck is short, muscular, and broad at the base; the withers broad and low; the chest deep; the shoulders muscular and slightly sloping; the back long; the croup broad, muscular, short and slightly sloping. The legs are strong and short, with relatively long cannon bones and short pasterns. The mane and tail are full, with coarse hair, and the tail is set low. The breed is known to be hardy and an easy keeper.[7] The breed has a double coat developed for extra insulation in cold temperatures.[8]

Characteristics differ between various groups of Icelandic horses, depending on the focus of individual breeders. Some focus on animals for pack and draft work, which are conformationally distinct from those bred for work under saddle, which are carefully selected for their ability to perform the traditional Icelandic gaits. Others are bred solely for horsemeat. Some breeders focus on favored coat colors.[2]

  

Members of the breed are not usually ridden until they are four years old, and structural development is not complete until age seven. Their most productive years are between eight and eighteen, although they retain their strength and stamina into their twenties. An Icelandic mare that lived in Denmark reached a record age of 56,[4] while another horse, living in Great Britain, reached the age of 42.[9] The horses are highly fertile, and both sexes are fit for breeding up to age 25; mares have been recorded giving birth at age 27. The horses tend to not be easily spooked, probably the result of not having any natural predators in their native Iceland.[4] Icelandics tend to be friendly, docile and easy to handle, although also enthusiastic and self-assured.[10] As a result of their isolation from other horses, disease in the breed within Iceland is mostly unknown, except for some kinds of internal parasites. The low prevalence of disease in Iceland is maintained by laws preventing horses exported from the country being returned, and by requiring that all equine equipment taken into the country be either new and unused or fully disinfected. As a result, native horses have no acquired immunity to disease; an outbreak on the island would be likely to be devastating to the breed.[4] This presents problems with showing native Icelandic horses against others of the breed from outside the country, as no livestock of any species can be imported into Iceland, and once horses leave the country they are not allowed to return.[10]

  

Gaits[edit]

The Icelandic is a "five-gaited" breed, known for its sure-footedness and ability to cross rough terrain. As well as the typical gaits of walk, trot, and canter/gallop, the breed is noted for its ability to perform two additional gaits. Although most horse experts consider the canter and gallop to be separate gaits, on the basis of a small variation in the footfall pattern,[11] Icelandic breed registries consider the canter and gallop one gait, hence the term "five-gaited".[12]

The first additional gait is a four-beat lateral ambling gait known as the tölt. This is known for its explosive acceleration and speed; it is also comfortable and ground-covering.[7] There is considerable variation in style within the gait, and thus the tölt is variously compared to similar lateral gaits such as the rack of the Saddlebred, the largo of the Paso Fino, or the running walk of the Tennessee Walking Horse. Like all lateral ambling gaits, the footfall pattern is the same as the walk (left hind, left front, right hind, right front), but differs from the walk in that it can be performed at a range of speeds, from the speed of a typical fast walk up to the speed of a normal canter. Some Icelandic horses prefer to tölt, while others prefer to trot; correct training can improve weak gaits, but the tölt is a natural gait present from birth.[1][12][13] There are two varieties of the tölt that are considered incorrect by breeders. The first is an uneven gait called a "Pig's Pace" or "Piggy-pace" that is closer to a two-beat pace than a four-beat amble. The second is called a Valhopp and is a tölt and canter combination most often seen in untrained young horses or horses that mix their gaits. Both varieties are normally uncomfortable to ride.[13]

  

The breed also performs a pace called a skeið, flugskeið or "flying pace". It is used in pacing races, and is fast and smooth,[2][4] with some horses able to reach up to 30 miles per hour (48 km/h).[10] Not all Icelandic horses can perform this gait; animals that perform both the tölt and the flying pace in addition to the traditional gaits are considered the best of the breed.[10] The flying pace is a two-beat lateral gait with a moment of suspension between footfalls; each side has both feet land almost simultaneously (left hind and left front, suspension, right hind and right front). It is meant to be performed by well-trained and balanced horses with skilled riders. It is not a gait used for long-distance travel. A slow pace is uncomfortable for the rider and is not encouraged when training the horse to perform the gait.[12] Although most pacing horses are raced in harness using sulkies, in Iceland horses are raced while ridden.[10]

The ancestors of the Icelandic horse were probably taken to Iceland by Viking Age Scandinavians between 860 and 935 AD. The Norse settlers were followed by immigrants from Norse colonies in Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Western Isles of Scotland.[2] These later settlers arrived with the ancestors of what would elsewhere become Shetland, Highland, and Connemara ponies, which were crossed with the previously imported animals.[7] There may also have been a connection with the Yakut pony,[14] and the breed has physical similarities to the Nordlandshest of Norway.[15] Other breeds with similar characteristics include the Faroe pony of the Faeroe Islands[16] and the Norwegian Fjord horse.[17] Genetic analyses have revealed links between the Mongolian horse and the Icelandic horse.[18][19][20] Mongolian horses are believed to have been originally imported from Russia by Swedish traders; this imported Mongol stock subsequently contributed to the Fjord, Exmoor, Scottish Highland, Shetland and Connemara breeds, all of which have been found to be genetically linked to the Icelandic horse.

  

About 900 years ago, attempts were made to introduce eastern blood into the Icelandic, resulting in a degeneration of the stock.[2] In 982 AD the Icelandic Althing (parliament) passed laws prohibiting the importation of horses into Iceland, thus ending crossbreeding. The breed has now been bred pure in Iceland for more than 1,000 years.[21][22]

  

The earliest Norse people venerated the horse as a symbol of fertility, and white horses were slaughtered at sacrificial feasts and ceremonies. When these settlers arrived in Iceland, they brought their beliefs, and their horses, with them.[2] Horses played a significant part in Norse mythology, and several horses played major roles in the Norse myths, among them the eight-footed pacer named Sleipnir, owned by Odin, chief of the Norse gods.[23] Skalm, a mare who is the first Icelandic horse known by name, appeared in the Book of Settlements from the 12th century. According to the book, a chieftain named Seal-Thorir founded a settlement at the place where Skalm stopped and lay down with her pack. Horses also play key roles in the Icelandic sagas Hrafnkel's Saga, Njal's Saga and Grettir's Saga. Although written in the 13th century, these three sagas are set as far back as the 9th century. This early literature has an influence today, with many riding clubs and horse herds in modern Iceland still bearing the names of horses from Norse mythology.[10]

  

Horses were often considered the most prized possession of a medieval Icelander.[24] Indispensable to warriors, war horses were sometimes buried alongside their fallen riders,[10] and stories were told of their deeds. Icelanders also arranged for bloody fights between stallions; these were used for entertainment and to pick the best animals for breeding, and they were described in both literature and official records from the Commonwealth period of 930 to 1262 AD.[2] Stallion fights were an important part of Icelandic culture, and brawls, both physical and verbal, among the spectators were common. The conflicts at the horse fights gave rivals a chance to improve their political and social standing at the expense of their enemies and had wide social and political repercussions, sometimes leading to the restructuring of political alliances. However, not all human fights were serious, and the events provided a stage for friends and even enemies to battle without the possibility of major consequences. Courting between young men and women was also common at horse fights.[25]

Natural selection played a major role in the development of the breed, as large numbers of horses died from lack of food and exposure to the elements. Between 874 and 1300 AD, during the more favorable climatic conditions of the medieval warm period,[26] Icelandic breeders selectively bred horses according to special rules of color and conformation. From 1300 to 1900, selective breeding became less of a priority; the climate was often severe and many horses and people died. Between 1783 and 1784, around 70% of the horses in Iceland were killed by volcanic ash poisoning and starvation after the 1783 eruption of Lakagígar. The eruption lasted eight months, covered hundreds of square miles of land with lava, and rerouted or dried up several rivers.[4][27] The population slowly recovered during the next hundred years, and from the beginning of the 20th century selective breeding again became important.[4] The first Icelandic breed societies were established in 1904, and the first breed registry in Iceland was established in 1923.[1]

  

Icelandics were exported to Great Britain before the 20th century to work as pit ponies in the coal mines, because of their strength and small size. However, those horses were never registered and little evidence of their existence remains. The first formal exports of Icelandic horses were to Germany in the 1940s.[24] Great Britain's first official imports were in 1956, when a Scottish farmer, Stuart McKintosh, began a breeding program. Other breeders in Great Britain followed McKintosh's lead, and the Icelandic Horse Society of Great Britain was formed in 1986.[21][28] The number of Icelandic horses exported to other nations has steadily increased since the first exports of the mid-19th century.[24] Since 1969, multiple societies have worked together to preserve, improve and market these horses under the auspices of the International Federation of Icelandic Horse Associations.[29] Today, the Icelandic remains a breed known for its purity of bloodline, and is the only horse breed present in Iceland.[7]

  

The Icelandic is especially popular in western Europe, Scandinavia, and North America.[4] There are about 80,000 Icelandic horses in Iceland (compared to a human population of 317,000), and around 100,000 abroad. Almost 50,000 are in Germany, which has many active riding clubs and breed societies.[10]

  

Uses[edit]

Icelandic horses still play a large part in Icelandic life, despite increasing mechanization and road improvements that diminish the necessity for the breed's use. The first official Icelandic horse race was held at Akureyri in 1874,[2] and many races are still held throughout the country from April through June. Both gallop and pace races are held, as well as performance classes showcasing the breed's unique gaits.[30] Winter events are often held, including races on frozen bodies of water. In 2009 such an event resulted in both horses and riders falling into the water and needing to be rescued.[31] The first shows, focused on the quality of animals as breeding stock, were held in 1906.[10] The Agricultural Society of Iceland, along with the National Association of Riding Clubs, now organizes regular shows with a wide variety of classes.[2] Some horses are still bred for slaughter, and much of the meat is exported to Japan.[1] Farmers still use the breed to round up sheep in the Icelandic highlands, but most horses are used for competition and leisure riding.[10]

Today, the Icelandic horse is represented by associations in 19 countries, with the International Federation of Icelandic Horse Associations (FEIF) serving as a governing international parent organization.[32] The FEIF was founded on May 25, 1969, with six countries as original members: Austria, Denmark, Germany, Iceland, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. France and Norway joined in 1971, and Belgium and Sweden in 1975. Later, Finland, Canada, Great Britain, USA, Faroe Islands, Luxembourg, Italy, Slovenia and Ireland became members, but Ireland subsequently left because of a lack of members. New Zealand has been given the status of "associate member" as its membership base is small.[33] In 2000, WorldFengur was established as the official FEIF registry for Icelandic horses.[34] The registry is a web database program that is used as a studbook to track the history and bloodlines of the Icelandic breed.[35] The registry contains information on the pedigree, breeder, owner, offspring, photo, breeding evaluations and assessments, and unique identification of each horse registered. The database was established by the Icelandic government in cooperation with the FEIF.[34] Since its inception, around 300,000 Icelandic horses, living and dead, have been registered worldwide.[35] The Islandpferde-Reiter- und Züchterverband is an organization of German riders and breeders of Icelandic horses and the association of all Icelandic horse clubs in Germany.

Rizwan is a Duty Customer Experience Manager on the Elizabeth Line. He became a Member of the British Empire in April, an award given to him because he was involved in preventing 29 suicide attempts on the London railway network. 29 interventions that ultimately changed not only those 29 peoples lives but also the lives of their family and friends. He sees it as an award was for all the railway workers who have done something to stop someone from taking their life.

 

After joining the railway Rizwan went on a Samaritans training course. This taught him to try and identify vulnerable people by looking for various signs. Things like a facial expression, the way they are dressed - some people contemplating suicide will dress inappropriately for the conditions - and how to open a dialogue. How to build up small talk and gauge the situation. This awareness has become key to Rizwan. With concern for fellow human beings passing through his station Rizwan starts to watch, talk and listen. A small and seemingly insignificant conversation to gain someone's trust and confidence can then lead can lead to an amazing outcome. A boring question about the weather might lead someone out of a dark mind altering state. In 2019 he received the Samaritans Lifesaver Award.

 

While closing up the station one night Rizwan and his colleagues had just dealt with a fight. It was after this when he saw someone who looked at risk on the mainline platform standing on their own. The last stopping train had gone and only non stopping high speed trains were going through the station. Rizwan's understood the situation and he was able to step in and stop a certain suicide. When he approached and started talking they started to cry and then clung onto him. He said it was beautiful that he was able to help and he prayed for them. Rizwan said "a few weeks after the intervention the person ran over and gave him a big hug and said if it wasn't for you I wouldn't be here and that will stay with me for the rest of my life". In helping them he acknowledges that they also helped him. Helping others actually has huge benefits for both people.

 

Rizwan had issues growing up with bullying and strange behaviour directed towards him that caused him to struggle and valuate people in a different way. At times he would go to sleep thinking he didn't want to wake up. But he is glad of the experience because he now has a better understanding of life and himself. He said the Asian community struggle to understand mental health issues and jokingly said 'if you approach your mother with issues she will probably say have a paracetamol and it will be ok in the morning'. This can be true of all community's, though some are worse than others.

 

Rizwan says "parents need to take a very active role in maintaining a solid platform at home" because of the challenge we all face. Unsolved problems can fester and get worse over time and reappear years later. Talking, and asking questions is invaluable. He says parents need to be a parental figure and a friend. They need to be approachable and children need to feel they can be heard. We live in a time where social media is such a huge influence on life and has taken away some of the normal day to day interactions. We discussed that there are so many so called 'influencers', 'activists' and 'wellness guru's' it seems everyone is at, but how many are real? It's a world full of fake, vile, hypocrisy. They build an atmosphere to make people feel disengaged and depressed then try to make money off people when they are vulnerable. Some of the very people who make out they are there to help are actually doing the very opposite. And Rizwan talked about some of the current music that "that is destroying society singing about money, sexual activity, drugs and murder", glorifying violence, greed, narcissism and abuse against woman. A child's bedroom can now be very dangerous, if they are hooked up to the internet and addicted to it. But his main inspiration is his parents who are at the heart of the local community in East London where he grew up. He has learnt from their understanding and selflessness to show kindness and empathy. They treat people the same whatever class, race or religion. Everyone is included from friend's to neighbours and strangers, and Rizwan does the same.

Standing with his MBE in the grounds of Windsor Castle with his mum and dad was an unbelievable moment and a reflection of what they have taught him and what they have achieved together.

Victoria Baths is a Grade II* listed building, situated in the Chorlton-upon-Medlock area of Manchester, in Northwest England. The Baths opened to the public in 1906 and cost £59,144 to build. Manchester City Council closed the baths in 1993 and the building was left derelict. A multi-million pound restoration project began in 2007.

The baths were designed by the City Surveyor, T. de Courcy Meade, and his assistant, Arthur Davies. The work was supervised by Henry Price, the newly appointed city architect. The baths were opened in September 1906 by the Lord Mayor of Manchester who described the building as a "water palace". For 86 years the Baths provided essential leisure facilities. Private baths and a laundry were housed there along with three swimming pools and a Turkish bath. The main swimming pool was floored over in the winter months to hold dances. In 1952 the Victoria Baths installed the first public Aeratone (jacuzzi) in the country.

In the design and construction of the Baths, a great deal of money was expended, Manchester having at that time one of the world's wealthiest municipal coffers. The façade has multi-coloured brickwork and terracotta decoration, the main interior public spaces are clad in glazed tiles from floor to ceiling and most of the many windows have decorative stained glass.

The Baths were closed by Manchester City Council in 1993. The Friends of Victoria Baths was formed and began to investigate the possibility of running the Victoria Baths independently.

Various fund-raising attempts failed to bring about a restoration of the Baths, although work to prevent further deterioration of the building started in 1998

n September 2003, the Baths won the first series of the BBC's Restoration programme. The building was chosen by a public phone-vote from a short-list of ten buildings in danger of dereliction in the UK. It was awarded £3.4 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the money raised through the phone-voting process. The Prince of Wales visited the baths a month later to help celebrate the win.

It was intended that the money would be spent on re-opening the Turkish bath by around 2006, with other parts following later at a cost of around £15–20m. However, the redevelopment plans were dealt a blow one year later when quantity surveyors delivered a much larger estimate of £6.3m to restore the Turkish baths. The Heritage Lottery Fund requested further details about the full redevelopment before they would hand over any money for the first phase. Final planning approval to begin a restoration process was not received until September 2005.

In September 2006, as part of a number of events to mark the centenary of the building's opening, the gala pool was filled for the first time in 13 years.

The first phase of restoration work consisting of structural work and repairs began on Monday 19 March 2007, and was completed in September 2008. In 2011 the Baths were used as a filming location, a concert venue, and an exhibition centre.

Komatiites are very rare, magnesium-rich, extrusive, ultramafic igneous rocks. They are named after the Komati River Valley in South Africa, the type locality. Komatiite is an exceedingly rare type of lava. No volcano on Earth erupts this material today. Komatiites are essentially restricted to the Archean (4.55 to 2.5 billion years ago). Experimental evidence has shown that komatiite lavas, when originally erupted, were considerably hotter (~1600º C) than any modern lava type on Earth. This indicates that Earth’s mantle was much hotter than now. Other geologic evidence also indicates that early Earth’s heat flux was much higher than today’s.

 

Komatiite lava had a very low viscosity - it could flow like an ultradense gas. This property permitted the solidification of some individual lava flows that are only 1 cm thick.

 

The classic texture of komatiites is spinifex texture, named after clumps of long, spiky (& painful!) grasses. Komatiites with spinifex texture have short to long blades or plates of olivine mixed with smaller-scale blades of pyroxene.

 

All Archean komatiites are metamorphosed - the original igneous mineralogy (olivine, pyroxene, minor chromite, etc.) is gone to mostly gone. Such rocks are best termed metakomatiites, but the prefix “meta-” is usually not specified in writing.

 

Komatiites have economic significance, as many are closely associated with copper-nickel minerals (chalcopyrite & pentlandite), plus minor platinum-group elements, arsenides, bismuthides, and maybe a little gold and silver. Komatiites are a world-class source of nickel in Canada and Western Australia.

 

The outcrop seen here is part of a stack of tectonically-tilted, nearly vertical, komatiite lava flows at Pyke Hill, Ontario, Canada. The original olivine spinifex texture is serpentinized for the most part. Pyroxene spinifex consists of small, felted needles. Cumulate-textured units are also present in these lava flows, plus knobby peridotite units and brecciated or cooling-cracked flow tops.

 

Pyke Hill is a world-famous locality for komatiites. The rocks there are part of the Kidd-Munro Assemblage, which consists of ultramafic and mafic volcanic rocks intruded by mafic to ultramafic dikes and sill-like bodies. Minor felsic volcanic rocks are also present. Volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits occur in the Kidd-Munro Assemblage - they have been mined at the Texas Gulf Mine and the Potter Mine.

 

The peridotites at Pyke Hill are 37 to 45% silica. Spinifex-textured rocks here are 42 to 45% silica. The chromium (Cr) content ranges from 1500 to 5000 parts per million in the peridotite and spinifex-textured rocks. Nickel (Ni) content ranges from 400 to 2000 parts per million.

Built in 1406 to 1420, the complex consists of 980 buildings and covers 720,000 m2 (7,800,000 sq ft). The surrounding celestial region, the Ziwei Enclosure (Chinese: 紫微垣; pinyin: Zǐwēiyuán), was the realm of the Celestial Emperor and his family. The Forbidden City, as the residence of the terrestrial emperor, was its earthly counterpart. Jin, or "Forbidden", referred to the fact that no one could enter or leave the palace without the emperor's permission. Cheng means a walled city.

 

Today, the site is most commonly known in Chinese as Gùgōng (故宫), which means the "Former Palace". The museum which is based in these buildings is known as the "Palace Museum" (Chinese: 故宫博物院; pinyin: Gùgōng Bówùyùan).

 

The site of the Forbidden City was situated in the Imperial City during the Mongol Yuan Dynasty. Upon the establishment of the Ming Dynasty, the Hongwu Emperor moved the capital from Beijing in the north to Nanjing in the south, and ordered that the Yuan palaces be burnt down. When his son Zhu Di became the Yongle Emperor, he moved the capital back to Beijing, and construction began in 1406 on what would become the Forbidden City.

 

Construction lasted 14 years and required more than a million workers. Material used include whole logs of precious Phoebe zhennan wood (Chinese: 楠木; pinyin: nánmù) found in the jungles of south-western China, and large blocks of marble from quarries near Beijing. The floors of major halls were paved with "golden bricks" (Chinese: 金砖; pinyin: jīnzhuān), specially baked paving bricks from Suzhou.

 

From 1420 to 1644, the Forbidden City was the seat of the Ming Dynasty. In April 1644, it was captured by rebel forces led by Li Zicheng, who proclaimed himself emperor of the Shun Dynasty. He soon fled before the combined armies of former Ming general Wu Sangui and Manchu forces, setting fire to parts of the Forbidden City in the process. By October, the Manchus had achieved supremacy in northern China, and a ceremony was held at the Forbidden City to proclaim the young Shunzhi Emperor as ruler of all China under the Qing Dynasty. The Qing rulers changed the names on some of the principal buildings, to emphasise "Harmony" rather than "Supremacy", made the name plates bilingual (Chinese and Manchu), and introduced Shamanist elements to the palace.

 

In 1860, during the Second Opium War, Anglo-French forces took control of the Forbidden City and occupied it until the end of the war. In 1900 Empress Dowager Cixi fled from the Forbidden City during the Boxer Rebellion, leaving it to be occupied by forces of the treaty powers until the following year.

 

After being the home of 24 emperors – 14 of the Ming Dynasty and 10 of the Qing Dynasty – the Forbidden City ceased being the political centre of China in 1912 with the abdication of Puyi, the last Emperor of China. Under an agreement with the new Republic of China government, Puyi remained in the Inner Court, while the Outer Court was given over to public use, until he was evicted after a coup in 1924. The Palace Museum was then established in the Forbidden City in 1925. In 1933, the Japanese invasion of China forced the evacuation of the national treasures in the Forbidden City. Part of the collection was returned at the end of World War II, but the other part was evacuated to Taiwan in 1948 under orders by Chiang Kai-shek, whose Kuomintang was losing the Chinese Civil War. This relatively small but high quality collection was kept in storage until 1965, when it again became public, as the core of the National Palace Museum in Taipei.

 

After the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, some damage was done to the Forbidden City as the country was swept up in revolutionary zeal. During the Cultural Revolution, however, further destruction was prevented when Premier Zhou Enlai sent an army battalion to guard the city.

 

The Forbidden City was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987 by UNESCO as the "Imperial Palace of the Ming and Qing Dynasties", due to its significant place in the development of Chinese architecture and culture. It is currently administered by the Palace Museum, which is carrying out a sixteen-year restoration project to repair and restore all buildings in the Forbidden City to their pre-1912 state.

 

In recent years, the presence of commercial enterprises in the Forbidden City has become controversial. A Starbucks store that opened in 2000 sparked objections and eventually closed on July 13, 2007. Chinese media also took notice of a pair of souvenir shops that refused to admit Chinese citizens in order to price-gouge foreign customers in 2006.

Espacios Bioseguros

 

“Necesitamos tomar medidas preventivas de forma urgente bajo el paradigma del uso de las mejores tecnologías”

 

Luis de la Fuente Ramírez, presidente de ABQ, presentó Espacios Bioseguros junto al decano del Colegio de Biólogos de la Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid (COBCM), Ángel Fernández Ipar, como “un concepto en el que destacamos una serie de medidas de prevención para la población general por medio de un conjunto de soluciones tecnológicas para prevenir y minimizar los riesgos de contagio en, por ejemplo, espacios interiores, medios de transporte y otros, con el objetivo de controlar los agentes contaminantes de una forma eficaz y sostenible desde el punto de vista medioambiental y económico”. Por otro lado, “los profesionales debemos de controlar de forma eficaz los riesgos de contagio, tanto en las superficies como en el empleo de los materiales de trabajo que utilizamos todos los días”, matizó Ramírez a lo largo de su exposición.

 

Con motivo del acto de presentación de las Olimpiadas de Biología de la Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid, los responsables de ABQ dieron a conocer los objetivos de la entidad, así como el proyecto Espacios Bioseguros.

 

De esta manera, ABQ, entidad europea especializada en bioseguridad, “desea llevar a cabo un protocolo de implantación de un certificado de calidad para garantizar el Espacio Bioseguro en las empresas e instituciones con un 80% de éxito en todos los análisis que hagamos a partir de ahora”, indicaron los responsables de la asociación.

 

Recordemos que “ABQ ha logrado seleccionar, junto a los colegios de biólogos de las distintas Comunidades Autónomas, soluciones eficientes que han sido contrastadas por la NASA”, concluyó Ramírez.

 

De esta manera, la asociación ABQ participó en las Olimpiadas de Biología de la Comunidad de Madrid, organizadas por el Colegio de Biólogos de la Comunidad de Madrid (COBCM) con el patrocinio de la Consejería de Educación y la colaboración de la Universidad Complutense, Universidad Autónoma y Editorial Santillana.

Un projet « Prévention & réponse à l'exploitation & aux abus sexuels perpétrés par le personnel des Nations Unies en RCA » a été officiellement lancé le 23 juin 2023 à Nola, à 420 km au sud-ouest de Bangui. L’objectif principal est de permettre aux victimes de développer des activités génératrices de revenus. La ministre de la Promotion du genre, de protection de la femme, de la famille et de l'enfant, Marguerite Ramadan et la cheffe de l’Équipe déontologie et discipline de la MINUSCA, Adama Ndao, ont lancé le projet, en présence d’une foule nombreuse et des autorités locales.

 

Financé par la MINUSCA ce projet est mis en œuvre par l’ONG NBY au profit de 75 femmes bénéficiaires. Le centre de formations pour ces bénéficiaires a été aussi inauguré.

Luis de la Fuente Ramírez, presidente de ABQ, presentó Espacios Bioseguros junto al decano del Colegio de Biólogos de la Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid (COBCM), Ángel Fernández Ipar, como “un concepto en el que destacamos una serie de medidas de prevención para la población general por medio de un conjunto de soluciones tecnológicas para prevenir y minimizar los riesgos de contagio en, por ejemplo, espacios interiores, medios de transporte y otros, con el objetivo de controlar los agentes contaminantes de una forma eficaz y sostenible desde el punto de vista medioambiental y económico”. Por otro lado, “los profesionales debemos de controlar de forma eficaz los riesgos de contagio, tanto en las superficies como en el empleo de los materiales de trabajo que utilizamos todos los días”, matizó Ramírez a lo largo de su exposición.

 

Con motivo del acto de presentación de las Olimpiadas de Biología de la Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid, los responsables de ABQ dieron a conocer los objetivos de la entidad, así como el proyecto Espacios Bioseguros.

 

De esta manera, ABQ, entidad europea especializada en bioseguridad, “desea llevar a cabo un protocolo de implantación de un certificado de calidad para garantizar el Espacio Bioseguro en las empresas e instituciones con un 80% de éxito en todos los análisis que hagamos a partir de ahora”, indicaron los responsables de la asociación.

 

Recordemos que “ABQ ha logrado seleccionar, junto a los colegios de biólogos de las distintas Comunidades Autónomas, soluciones eficientes que han sido contrastadas por la NASA”, concluyó Ramírez.

 

De esta manera, la asociación ABQ participó en las Olimpiadas de Biología de la Comunidad de Madrid, organizadas por el Colegio de Biólogos de la Comunidad de Madrid (COBCM) con el patrocinio de la Consejería de Educación y la colaboración de la Universidad Complutense, Universidad Autónoma y Editorial Santillana.

ABQ, entidad sin ánimo de lucro que se encargará de buscar soluciones para todos los sectores de la actividad profesional, es una asociación que propone y busca, por medio del debate, la transmisión del conocimiento e información precisa sobre determinadas amenazas para el sector humano, sobre todo con las nuevas bacterias y el tratamiento y análisis de casos concretos. Luis de la Fuente Ramírez, presidente, reconoce que “el esfuerzo no ha hecho más que empezar”. En la actualidad, representará los intereses de los colectivos allegados por la firma de Convenios de Colaboración en materia de divulgación, formación y colaboración en la redacción de estudios e informes especializados.

 

Objetivos ABQ:

 

1º.- Concienciar a la sociedad sobre los riesgos que les afectan en materia de bioseguridad en su contexto universal. Riesgos que afectan a todos los espacios públicos donde la gente interacciona físicamente entre sí y la necesidad, por ello, de generar “Espacios Bioseguros” donde estos riesgos sean minimizados.

 

2º.- Encontrar, evaluar y difundir a la sociedad las mejores técnicas y/o tecnologías disponibles para minimizar dichos riesgos. Dichas técnicas y/o tecnologías una vez encontradas deberán ser evaluadas por los comités científico-técnicos formados expertos de la comunidad científica.
