Spinifex metakomatiite (serpentinized) in the Precambrian of Ontario, Canada. (this outcrop is bleached to prevent growth of vegetation; this is a NO HAMMER locality)
Komatiites are very rare, magnesium-rich, extrusive, ultramafic igneous rocks. They are named after the Komati River Valley in South Africa, the type locality. Komatiite is an exceedingly rare type of lava. No volcano on Earth erupts this material today. Komatiites are essentially restricted to the Archean (4.55 to 2.5 billion years ago). Experimental evidence has shown that komatiite lavas, when originally erupted, were considerably hotter (~1600º C) than any modern lava type on Earth. This indicates that Earth’s mantle was much hotter than now. Other geologic evidence also indicates that early Earth’s heat flux was much higher than today’s.
Komatiite lava had a very low viscosity - it could flow like an ultradense gas. This property permitted the solidification of some individual lava flows that are only 1 cm thick.
The classic texture of komatiites is spinifex texture, named after clumps of long, spiky (& painful!) grasses. Komatiites with spinifex texture have short to long blades or plates of olivine mixed with smaller-scale blades of pyroxene.
All Archean komatiites are metamorphosed - the original igneous mineralogy (olivine, pyroxene, minor chromite, etc.) is gone to mostly gone. Such rocks are best termed metakomatiites, but the prefix “meta-” is usually not specified in writing.
Komatiites have economic significance, as many are closely associated with copper-nickel minerals (chalcopyrite & pentlandite), plus minor platinum-group elements, arsenides, bismuthides, and maybe a little gold and silver. Komatiites are a world-class source of nickel in Canada and Western Australia.
The outcrop seen here is part of a stack of tectonically-tilted, nearly vertical, komatiite lava flows at Pyke Hill, Ontario, Canada. The original olivine spinifex texture is serpentinized for the most part. Pyroxene spinifex consists of small, felted needles. Cumulate-textured units are also present in these lava flows, plus knobby peridotite units and brecciated or cooling-cracked flow tops.
Pyke Hill is a world-famous locality for komatiites. The rocks there are part of the Kidd-Munro Assemblage, which consists of ultramafic and mafic volcanic rocks intruded by mafic to ultramafic dikes and sill-like bodies. Minor felsic volcanic rocks are also present. Volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits occur in the Kidd-Munro Assemblage - they have been mined at the Texas Gulf Mine and the Potter Mine.
The peridotites at Pyke Hill are 37 to 45% silica. Spinifex-textured rocks here are 42 to 45% silica. The chromium (Cr) content ranges from 1500 to 5000 parts per million in the peridotite and spinifex-textured rocks. Nickel (Ni) content ranges from 400 to 2000 parts per million.

Harry W. Clark was the first of the long list of famous scientists t3 dedicate his entire professional career to the Lawrence Experiment Station and the Massachusetts State Board of Health. The young chemist came to the Station at the beginning of the magic year 1888 and ten years later he was put in charge of the work. He continued his direction of the researches until his retirement in 1933) giving forty-five years of pioneering service in the sanitary sciences. He played a leading role in the inception and development of the "activated sludge" sewage-disposal process and carried on an immense amount of work in the treatment of industrial wastes. A contemporary, commenting on Clark's reports, said "Europe is certainly greatly indebted to work done by the Massachusetts State Board of Health." lmhoff is said to have admitted gladly that his development of the lmhoff tank was based upon the findings of the Experiment Station under Clark's direction.
During the long years of Mr. Clark's administration of the Station's affairs many other young chemical engineers, biologists, and bacteriologists joined the staff to contribute their skills for a while to the never-ceasing investigations, only to move on to more tempting opportunities coming to them both because of their enhanced understanding and the recognition their connection with the Station brought them. The names of only two will provide some measure of the wide variety of the talents of these many budding scientists — of necessity, going unrecorded here.
The then recently graduated sanitarian, Charles-Edward Amory Winslow, began his career at the Station, Today he is acclaimed as the elder-statesman of the world-wide public health movement as well as a revered leader in the National field.
Another of the young pioneers was the chemist, Stephen DeMeritt Gage, assistant bacteriologist at the Station, who contributed much to the basic design of sewage treatment plants. A pioneer in the sanitary study of shellfish, his years of patient effort laid the foundation for much of our present ideas for control of the quality of this type of food, so important to New England. He went on to become Sanitary Engineer of the Rhode Island Board of Health and later a renowned and successful sanitary engineering consultant — and a consecrated adviser of other men less well-known than he.
As a sort of summing up of the contributions of these men and others, Professor Gordon Fair wrote: "Many of the early studies of water purification and sewage treatment at the Lawrence Experiment Station are counted among the classics of sanitary engineering literature. Some of them were so fundamental and so well conceived that they have continued to be reprinted in books on sanitary engineering for 'half a century. The Lawrence Experiment Station eventually became a mecca for engineers, chemists and biologists interested in the purification of water, the treatment of sewage, wastes, and the control of stream pollution, Most of the important American laboratories for sanitary research, whether supported by federal, state, municipal or university authorities, are linked in one way or another to Lawrence and to the men who moved from Lawrence into engineering practice."
A MODEST PROPOSAL
For preventing the debts of poor people in the Kingdom of the Greeks,
from being a burden on the The German Peoples or their Creditors
and for making them beneficial to the publick.
It is a melancholy object to those, who walk through the Capital of The Greeks, or travel in the country, when they see the streets, the roads and cabbin-doors crowded with the families of those who have taken their own lives, followed by three, four, or six kith and kin, all in black, and imploring every passenger for justice. These descendants of Pericles and Aristotle instead of being able to work for their honest livelihood, are forced to employ all their time in stroling to beg sustenance for their helpless offspring who, as they grow up, either turn to Godless anarchism for want of work, or leave their dear native country, to work in the Factories in the lands of the North, or sell themselves to dens of inequity.
But my intention is very far from being confined to provide only for the Greeks: it is of a much greater extent, and shall take in the whole number of those of the race of the Germans who at a certain age, become prone with the passage of time to the corrupting effects of Nature's hand upon our weak flesh.
As to my own part, having turned my thoughts for many years, upon this important subject, and maturely weighed the several schemes of our Economists, I have always found them grossly mistaken in their computation. It is true, a man who has take his own life is: at most has not the value of above a few hundred euros, which the family of the Departed may not even receive, I propose to provide for them in such a manner, as, instead of being a charge upon their creditors, or the parish, or wanting food and raiment for the rest of their lives, they shall, on the contrary, contribute to the Reduction of the Nation's Debt, and partly to the cloathing of many thousands
I shall now therefore humbly propose my own thoughts, which I hope will not be liable to the least objection.I have been assured by a very knowing Doctor of my acquaintance in London, that a healthy Greek well nursed, is, a most suitable nourishing and wholesome Donor of humane organs, whether heart, liver, kidney, or pancreas; and I make no doubt that it will equally be of service in a male or a female.
Supposing that one thousand families in the state of the Germans, would be constant customers for fresh organs, besides others who might have need of them on other occasions, particularly after misfortunes upon the King's road, I compute that Athens would take off annually about one thousand carcasses; and the rest of the kingdom (where probably they will be sold somewhat cheaper) the remaining two thousand.
But, as to my self, having been wearied out for many years with offering vain, idle, visionary thoughts, and at length utterly despairing of success, I fortunately fell upon this proposal, which, as it is wholly new, so it hath something solid and real, of no expence and little trouble, full in our own power, and whereby we can incur no danger in disobliging Europe. For this kind of commodity will not bear exportation, and flesh being of too tender a consistence, to admit a long continuance in ice, although perhaps I could name other countries, which would be glad to use up the whole nations supply of Internal Organs without a second thought.
After all, I am not so violently bent upon my own opinion, as to reject any offer, proposed by wise men, which shall be found equally innocent, cheap, easy, and effectual. But before something of that kind shall be advanced in contradiction to my scheme, and offering a better, I desire the author or authors will be pleased maturely to consider two points.
As things now stand, how Greeks will be able to find food and raiment for a an countless multitude of useless mouths of backs. And secondly, There being a round ten million of creatures in humane figure throughout this kingdom, whose whole subsistence put into a common stock, would leave them in debt billions of euros, adding those who are beggars by profession, to the bulk of farmers, publick servents and labourers, with their wives and children, who are beggars in effect;
I desire those politicians who dislike my overture, and may perhaps be so bold to attempt an answer, that they will first ask the families of these Damned Souls, whether they would not at this day think it a great happiness to have their Departed ones sold for their organs, in the manner I prescribe, and thereby have avoided such a perpetual scene of misfortunes, as The Greeks have since gone through, by the oppression of bankers, the impossibility of paying debts without money or trade, the want of common sustenance, with neither house nor cloaths to cover them from the inclemencies of the weather, and the most inevitable prospect of intailing the like, or greater miseries, upon their breed for ever.

STROKE: THE SILENT KILLER, A PREVENTABLE AND TREATABLE CATASTROPHE
*Stroke is a global epidemic that threatens lives, health, and quality of life.
It is a major cause of long term disabilities and premature death
Stroke occurs when a vessel that brings blood to the brain bursts or is clogged by a blood clot. With today’s unhealthy lifestyles and numerous health issues such as high blood pressure, physical inactivity, smoking, alcohol overuse, stroke has grown to be an epidemic all over the world. Stroke accounts for 5.7 million deaths each year worldwide and ranks second to ischemic heart disease as a cause of death. It is also a leading cause of serious disability, sparing no age, sex, ethnic origin, or country.
The theme of the World Stroke Day 2009: “Stroke‐What can I do?”
This question implies that everyone can do something about stroke, whether it is on an individual or group level.
If you notice one or more of these signs, don't wait. Stroke is a medical emergency.
Call your emergency medical services and get to a hospital right away!
Learn the warning signs of stroke.
Take action in an emergency.
The FAST test
You can use the FAST test to remember the signs of stroke it involves asking three simple questions:
•Face – Can the person smile, has their mouth drooped?
•Arms – Can the person raise both arms?
•Speech – Can the person speak clearly and understand what you say?
•Time – Act FAST!

It was a hot day reaching 37°C by 2 pm and I was sick from the day before but it did not prevent me from going to the Chatuchak Market. Also there is the Camp Vintage Flea Market but it was too early for the sellers to start the day when I was there but at least I saw DC-3 one of my most favourite aircrafts of all time.

My Timbuk2 messenger bag prevented adding salt to injury by not letting my mac computer get destroyed while I got hit by a car.
I got my Timbuk2 bag for several reasons but one of them was the handy laptop sleeve built into the bag for when I commute to school and need to bring my computer. I try to bring it out with me as little as possible, but this day I needed it for a presentation. Well, I was riding home from work when out of nowhere I get slammed by a car running a red light. Before I knew it I was on the hood of the car trying to figure out if I was okay, when I realize I hear screaming that is not coming from me. I look into the car and two young girls in sparkly dresses are staring at me screaming. I began to say; "Are you alright?" , when I remembered that I was the one on the hood of the car. Turns out the girls ran the red light because they were late for prom , and looking back, we all know how important that night in our lives is..........Anyways, once I concluded that I was more or less okay, I freaked out about my computer, so I look inside my bag, and not a scratch! Perfecto!! It was tucked away nice and cozy in the back of my bag, and if it had been in a regular backpack, I doubt it would have remained in the condition it was in, and there's no way I would have been able to replace it. Thank You Thank You Thank you!!
Chloe
All the drains from the airgaps were directed to the floor drain. The advantage of multiple backflows compared to a single backflow are many. The small backflows are solid brass and low cost on repairs. If one or two fail at a time, you still have the other backflows functioning. The large valves are epoxy coated, which collects debris on the surface. They are costly to repair and you would have to shut off the water to the facility if it fails.
