10th September 1933 a group of people from Stockton prevented a rally by Mosely's black shirts "They Shall Not Pass"
"The Battle of Stockton – 1933
In the 1930’s Stockton, like many towns in the North of England, was in the grip of the depression.
Mass unemployment brought about by the ‘Wall Street Crash’ of 1929 and the subsequent collapse of the markets across the globe was affecting the whole of the country but the North, with its reliance on the traditional heavy industries and shipbuilding, was bearing the brunt.
The conditions were ripe for the emergence of a new political movement in the shape of Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists and Stockton was the site for one of their early attempts to drum up support. Recognisable by their black shirts, the Fascist organisation echoed many of the sentiments of Mussolini’s paramilitaries in Italy and Hitler’s National Socialist Party.
On the afternoon of Sunday 10 September 1933 a convoy of coaches arrived at Victoria Bridge, on the Yorkshire side of the Tees. They were carrying more than one hundred Blackshirts from Tyneside and the Manchester area. Led by their propaganda officer, Captain Vincent Collier, they assembled in military order, crossed the bridge and marched up Stockton High Street to a spot to the north of the Town Hall where they had planned to hold an open air meeting.
While they had hoped to arrive unannounced, the Blackshirts were surprised to find their plans had been leaked to local Trade Union organisers and members of the Communist party who had arranged a ‘reception committee’. It was reported at the time that as many as two thousand opponents of the Fascists had arrived to disrupt their meeting. As Captain Collier tried to address the crowd with a loud-hailer his voice could not be heard above the shouts and boos of the opposition.
While the political opponents of the Fascists had managed to find out about the Blackshirt meeting, the local police were unaware of their intentions so there wasn’t a strong police presence in the area. The few police who were on hand did their best to control the situation and as things started to get out of hand the Inspector on duty ordered Collier and his entourage to break up the meeting and disperse. At this point the crowd were becoming more hostile to the Blackshirts who it seems broke ranks and rushed across to Silver Street in an attempt to protect themselves from the mob.
By this time both sides had armed themselves with a variety of weapons including wooden battens and pick-axe handles. The mob were wading into the Blackshirts who resisted as best they could in the confines of Silver Street with the river at their backs. Missiles were thrown into the Fascists ranks and, as well being hit with rocks and half bricks, the Blackshirts were pelted with potatoes into which razor blades had been fixed (some premeditation there I’m thinking!).
As more police arrived they began to take charge of the situation and were able to separate the warring factions and escort the Fascists back down the High Street to their coaches on the other side of the Tees although some stragglers still had to outrun the mob who followed them all the way.
No arrests were made but a number of the Fascists were injured in the battle, some of them seriously. It was reported that as many as twenty of their number were treated in hospitals in the region that night. One of them, Edmund Warburton from Bury, near Manchester was blinded in one eye as a result of being hit by an object in Silver Street (some reports say it was caused by a rock, others by a deadly potato).
The Battle of Stockton was over with the fascists being routed – although many of those present would find themselves facing Fascist forces again a few years later." heritage.stockton.gov.uk/stories/battle-stockton-1933/
A bulletin board in Mafraq Academy with photos of its students. Mafraq Academy is an informal, NGO-funded K-3 school. It is not officially recognized by the Jordanian government, but it still provides Syrian refugee children with some basic educational background and teaches them principles of fair play, respect, and healthy conflict resolution. The school can accommodate 150 students. On the first day of registration, Mafraq Academy's wait list had reached 300. Even more sobering is the estimate that over half of refugee children in Mafraq will never get to enroll in school.

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict (SRSG CAAC), Ms. Virginia Gamba, witnessed the signature by the Government of South Sudan of an Action Plan to end and prevent all grave violations against children, the most comprehensive Action Plan signed to date by parties listed in the annexes of the Secretary-General Annual Report on CAAC. The Action Plan covering all grave violations is the first of its kind since the creation of the Children and Armed Conflict mandate.
“This long-awaited commitment to South Sudanese boys and girls by the authorities is the culmination of months of engagement with the principal parties to conflict and comes with a significant decrease in grave violations against children and steady child releases over the past year,” said the Special Representative during a four-day visit to South Sudan, her second to the country since she took office. “The Action Plan comes at a crucial moment for South Sudan, as it has the potential to build confidence between the parties in the context of the peace process and because it carries a strong message of prevention. Ultimately, peace remains the best protection possible from hostilities for boys and girls and the only road to sustainable development.”

On May 6, 2023 at 5:45PM the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 640 block of S San Pedro Street in Downtown Los Angeles. The first arriving fire officer reported finding a two story commercial building with an outside fire which was extending into the building. He requested three additional task forces and the firefighters initiated an offensive operation.
Facing both rolling steel and heavy duty security doors, firefighters used rotary saws to cut their way into the building. Once inside, fire attack found the fire extending to just the area at the front of the building. The 38 firefighters on scene (prior to the assignment of the additionally requested fire companies), operating under the command of Battalion Chief Nicholas Ferrari, quickly got water on the blaze and achieved a full knockdown in 30 minutes. The fire was held at the front of the building and prevented from extending back through the structure.
One male firefighter sustained a non-life threatening leg injury while working to gain access to the building. He was transported to the hospital for care.
The fire was determined to have originated outside and extended into the building. A thorough search of the structure found no occupants inside.

Dry socket is the condition which tends to happen when you get your #tooth #extracted. The teeth which are most commonly extracted around the world are wisdom teeth. So the condition of dry socket is typically discussed whenever there is a discussion about wisdom tooth extraction. But the matter of fact is that this condition can occur after extraction of any tooth.
What is a dry socket?
You may wonder what a #dry_socket is. This condition is mainly related to the exposure of bone and nerve after the tooth is extracted. It happens when the natural process of clotting does not happen. As a result, the foods, fluids and even air can make the area quite sensitive. In the end, things can head towards infection which can be quite severe.
After getting your wisdom tooth extracted, you should have just a little bit of pain. But if the pain increase and radiates towards your ears and you find no respite from the painful condition, you need to immediately call your dentist.
Preventing dry socket
The time after extraction surgery can be quite painful and it is the time when small infection can lead to bigger problems. Therefore, you have to make sure that you are taking every precautionary measure that is required to avoid development of dry socket. A few things that raise the risk of dry socket may include:
•History of wisdom tooth removal
•History of dry socket
•Use of birth control
•Tobacco use
•Traumatic extraction (tooth extraction after an accident)
•Poor oral hygiene
•Use of medication that prevent blood clotting
After getting your wisdom tooth extracted, you have to make sure that you take every #antibiotic and #antiseptic #medicine which your dentist has suggested. Apart from that, you will have to ensure the following things to prevent dry socket.
•Make sure that you do not rinse your mouth for 24 hours after tooth extraction
•Avoid drinking from straw
•Be sure not to smoke for 72 hours after extraction
•Strictly avoid hot foods and beverages
•Do not eat crunchy foods
•Do not use alcohol
•Limit physical activity for 5 – 7 days
Treating dry socket
One thing worth mentioning here that dry socket is generally uncommon, i.e. only 2-5% of patients experience having dry sockets after tooth extraction. Although it is pretty painful condition and it doesn’t seem like going away pretty soon, dentists have the solutions to treat the condition. Generally, the dry socket #treatment strategy involves:
•Topical medications
•Flushing/Rinsing
•Strictly avoiding smoking
•Avoiding the intake of sugary drinks
•Avoiding the use of straws
•Ensuring proper oral care and hygiene
Apart from the things that you will need to do, your dentist is going to take care of the rest.

The British Foreign Secretary gave a speech on preventing sexual violence and urged Sri Lanka to end the culture of impunity, at an event held at the British High Commission in Colombo on 13th November 2013.
This Tibetan Esoteric Buddhist statue of the Vajra Guardian of Great Might and Virtue is one of several in the Yonghegong Lamasery. It depicts the Esoteric practice of having a female sexual partner for certain types of Esoteric Buddhist practices.
As Vajrasekhara-sutra says:
"How pure is man's mind! It's only natural that lust should change him. Keeping away from lust will restore purity in him, and keeping away from lust means conquering it with another form of lust."
Sex is cloaked (literally in this shot) in mysticism and given the role of "conquering lust".
It is said that these statues were once used to show the Chinese Imperial Princes the facts of life. Sadly, now they are deemed to be too scandalous for general consumption, and draped with the modesty cloth you see in the lower right of the shot.
I do have a picture of the complete statue in my guidebook, which describes it as a "Buddhist double statue which symbolizes the supreme state of yoga."
Oh, ok then....
Can technology help prevent and respond to gender-based violence (GBV), particularly in low- and middle-income countries? Increasingly, cell phones, cameras, crowd-sourcing, and mobile apps are being used in innovative ways to address GBV, but questions surrounding ethics, effectiveness, and practicality remain. The Interagency Gender Working Group, U. S. Agency for International Development, Woodrow Wilson Center, CARE, and Population Reference Bureau will host a panel discussion exploring the ethics around new technologies to combat GBV; how effective they are; and what some of the more practical and actionable ways forward might be.

On February 2, Secretary McDonald and I will host a VA national summit on Veteran suicide prevention. Why a national summit? Because Veteran suicide impacts all Americans and needs to be addressed in a coordinated effort with government and community stakeholders. And, because all Americans, and VA in particular, have a duty to help Veterans suffering from the hidden scars of military service that lead them to think suicide is their only option. We must do better and this summit will help us to determine our future course.
The “Preventing Veteran Suicide – A Call to Action” summit will bring together VA and DoD leaders, mental health professionals, Veteran Service Organizations, Veterans and their families, and other key partners. These national leaders will direct their attention to how we can best help Veterans and their families access appropriate mental health services.
It will be an honor to welcome Susan and Richard Selke, as guests at the summit. Their son, Clay Hunt, was a Marine Corps Veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan who took his own life in 2011. Congress subsequently passed the Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans Act, which President Obama signed in February of last year. Their commitment to improving mental health care for Veterans like their son has been inspiring.
Also at the summit, Senator Elizabeth Dole will discuss the role of Caregivers and Dr. Ron C. Kessler of Harvard Medical School will deliver a presentation on “Researching Risk for Suicide among Veterans- What Are We Missing?” These are just two of the many supportive experts joining us for this important call to action.
We already know that America’s Veterans are at higher overall risk for suicide than the general public. Veterans suffering from conditions like posttraumatic stress, depression, insomnia, and chronic pain are particularly vulnerable. However, groundbreaking research shows us that Veterans who are fully engaged in VA care are at lower risk of suicide than those who are not. It is essential that information about resources for Veterans at risk for suicide is readily available to Veterans and those close to them.
We want Veterans to come to us, but we must also go to them and build effective networks of communication and care across communities and health organizations. We must be far more proactive and creative in our approach. I ask each of you to consider how you can make a difference.
I addressed our efforts yesterday in an op-ed that appeared in the Palm Beach Post and many other papers across the U.S. I encourage you to take a moment and read my op-ed.
I know that by discussing the many aspects of this unacceptable crisis in our Veterans’ lives, we will advance their care and treatment. I will report back to you with another blog following the summit. Thank you for all you do for Veterans each and every day.
