Argonne’s Center for Nanoscale Materials has a special facility
called the Nanofabrication Clean Room, where scientists can build and study extremely tiny materials—so sensitive that they can be thrown off by the normal dust particles in indoor air. The Clean Room controls the air quality, temperature, and humidity, and filters dust and particles to prevent contamination.

More than 200 researchers a year from 24 states and 13 countries use the Clean Room.
Staff has more than 100 years of combined experiences in nanomaterials.
Machines in the Clean Room can detect 1 particle of methane per 1,000,000 particles.
Special instruments can carve features just 100 nanometers wide. (A human hair is about 60,000 nanometers wide.)

Will be busy printing and framing in nice large, matted formats and frames and museum glass! Five of these photos will be printed on 40" x 60" floating wall mounted metal sheets! I think I know which--will share photos of the photos hanging on the walls!
And I am mounting some on plexiglass/acryllic--front mounting them! Some I am printing on lossy fuji-crystal archival paper too, and then front mounting 40"x60" versions to plexiglass--will send photos!
The secret to HDR photography is that you want people to say, "Woe dude--that's unreal!" And not, "Dude--that's not real!" "Unreal" is the word they use when they're trying to figure out the photo--what makes it cool--is it a photo? Is it painted? How'd it come to be--how'd you bend the light that way? "That's not real," is what they say if you have the saturation/HDR/ etc. turned up too high. :)
Some (almost) final edits for my Los Angeles Gallery Show! Printing them on metallic paper at 13" x 19" and mounting and framing them on a 4mm 18x24 white mat and 2" dark wood frame. Also printing some 40" x 70" whihc is over three feet by five feet! Wish you all could come (and hang out with the goddesses)!

"When I went to Asia," he began, "as a paid officer in the Quaestor's suite, I lodged with a family at Pergamus. I found my quarters very pleasant, first on account of the convenience and elegance of the apartments, and still more so because of the beauty of my host's son. I devised the following method to prevent the master of the house entertaining any suspicions of me as a seducer. Whenever the conversation at table turned on the abuse of handsome boys, I showed such extreme indignation and protested with such an air of austerity and offended dignity against the violence done to my ears by filthy talk of the sort, that I came to be regarded, especially by the mother, as one of the greatest of moralists and philosophers. Before long I was allowed to take the lad to the gymnasium; it was I that directed his studies, I that guided his conduct, and guarded against any possible debaucher of his person being admitted to the house.
"It happened on one occasion that we were sleeping in the dining-hall, the school having closed early as it was a holiday, and our amusements having rendered us too lazy to retire to our sleeping-chambers. Somewhere about midnight I noticed that the lad was awake; so whispering soft and low, I murmured a timid prayer in these words, 'Lady Venus, if I may kiss this boy, so that he know it not, tomorrow I will present him with a pair of doves.' Hearing the price offered for the gratification, the boy set up a snore. So approaching him, where he lay still making pretense to be asleep, I stole two or three flying kisses. Satisfied with this beginning, I rose betimes next morning, and discharged my vow by bringing the eager lad a choice and costly pair of doves.
"The following night, the same opportunity occurring, I changed my petition, 'If I may pass a naughty hand over this boy, and he not feel it, I will present him for his complaisance with a brace of the best fighting cocks ever seen.' At this promise the child came nestling up to me of his own accord and was actually afraid, I think, lest I might drop asleep again. I soon quieted his uneasiness on this point, and amply satisfied my longings, short of the supreme bliss, on every part of his beautiful body. Then when daylight came, I made him happy with the gift I had promised him.
"As soon as the third night left me free to try again, I rose as before, and creeping up to the rascal, who was lying awake expecting me, whispered at his ear, 'If only, ye Immortal Gods, I may win of this sleeping darling full and happy satisfaction of my love, for such bliss I will tomorrow present the lad with an Asturian of the Macedonian strain, the best to be had for money, but always on the condition he shall not feel my violence.' Never did the stripling sleep more sound. So first I handled his plump and snowy bosoms, then kissed him on the mouth, and finally concentrated all my ardors in one supreme delight. Next morning he sat still in his room, expecting my present as usual. Well! you know as well as I do, it is a much easier matter to buy doves and fighting cocks than an Asturian; besides which, I was afraid so valuable a present might rouse suspicion as to the real motives of my liberality. After walking about for an hour or so, I returned to the house, and gave the boy a kiss--and nothing else. He looked about inquiringly, then threw his arms round my neck, and 'Please, sir!' he said, 'where is my Asturian?'
"'It is hard,' I replied, 'to get one fine enough. You will have to wait a few days for me to fulfill my vow.'
"The boy had wits enough to see through my answer, and his resentment was betrayed by the angry look that crossed his face.
"Although by this breach of faith I had closed against myself the door of access so carefully contrived, I returned once more to the attack. For, after allowing a few days to elapse, one night when similar circumstances had created just another opportunity for us as before, I began, the moment I heard the father snoring, to beg and pray the boy to be friends with me again,--that is, to let me give him pleasure for pleasure, adding all the arguments my burning concupiscence could suggest. But he was positively angry and refused to say one word beyond, 'Go to sleep, or I will tell my father.' But there is never an obstacle so difficult audacity will not vanquish it. He was still repeating, 'I will wake my father,' when I slipped into his bed and took my pleasure of him in spite of his half-hearted resistance. However, he found a certain pleasure in my naughty ways, for after a long string of complaints about my having cheated and cajoled him and made him the laughing-stock of his school-fellows, to whom he had boasted of his rich friend, he whispered, 'Still I won't be so unkind as you; if you like, do it again.'
"So forgetting all our differences, I was reconciled to the dear lad once more, and after utilizing his kind permission, I slipped off to sleep in his arms. But the stripling was not satisfied with only one repetition, all ripe for love as he was and just at the time of life for passive enjoyment. So he woke me up from my slumbers, and, 'Anything you'd like, eh?' said he. Nor was I, so far, indisposed to accept his offer. So working him the best ever I could, to the accompaniment of much panting and perspiration, I gave him what he wanted, and then dropped asleep again, worn out with pleasure. Less than an hour had passed before he started pinching me and asking, 'Eh! why are we not at work?' Hereupon, sick to death of being so often disturbed, I flew into a regular rage, and retorted his own words upon him; 'Go to sleep,' I cried, 'or I'll tell your father!'"

On February 2, Secretary McDonald and I will host a VA national summit on Veteran suicide prevention. Why a national summit? Because Veteran suicide impacts all Americans and needs to be addressed in a coordinated effort with government and community stakeholders. And, because all Americans, and VA in particular, have a duty to help Veterans suffering from the hidden scars of military service that lead them to think suicide is their only option. We must do better and this summit will help us to determine our future course.
The “Preventing Veteran Suicide – A Call to Action” summit will bring together VA and DoD leaders, mental health professionals, Veteran Service Organizations, Veterans and their families, and other key partners. These national leaders will direct their attention to how we can best help Veterans and their families access appropriate mental health services.
It will be an honor to welcome Susan and Richard Selke, as guests at the summit. Their son, Clay Hunt, was a Marine Corps Veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan who took his own life in 2011. Congress subsequently passed the Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans Act, which President Obama signed in February of last year. Their commitment to improving mental health care for Veterans like their son has been inspiring.
Also at the summit, Senator Elizabeth Dole will discuss the role of Caregivers and Dr. Ron C. Kessler of Harvard Medical School will deliver a presentation on “Researching Risk for Suicide among Veterans- What Are We Missing?” These are just two of the many supportive experts joining us for this important call to action.
We already know that America’s Veterans are at higher overall risk for suicide than the general public. Veterans suffering from conditions like posttraumatic stress, depression, insomnia, and chronic pain are particularly vulnerable. However, groundbreaking research shows us that Veterans who are fully engaged in VA care are at lower risk of suicide than those who are not. It is essential that information about resources for Veterans at risk for suicide is readily available to Veterans and those close to them.
We want Veterans to come to us, but we must also go to them and build effective networks of communication and care across communities and health organizations. We must be far more proactive and creative in our approach. I ask each of you to consider how you can make a difference.
I addressed our efforts yesterday in an op-ed that appeared in the Palm Beach Post and many other papers across the U.S. I encourage you to take a moment and read my op-ed.
I know that by discussing the many aspects of this unacceptable crisis in our Veterans’ lives, we will advance their care and treatment. I will report back to you with another blog following the summit. Thank you for all you do for Veterans each and every day.

“Necesitamos tomar medidas preventivas de forma urgente bajo el paradigma del uso de las mejores tecnologías”
Luis de la Fuente Ramírez, presidente de ABQ, presentó Espacios Bioseguros junto al decano del Colegio de Biólogos de la Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid (COBCM), Ángel Fernández Ipar, como “un concepto en el que destacamos una serie de medidas de prevención para la población general por medio de un conjunto de soluciones tecnológicas para prevenir y minimizar los riesgos de contagio en, por ejemplo, espacios interiores, medios de transporte y otros, con el objetivo de controlar los agentes contaminantes de una forma eficaz y sostenible desde el punto de vista medioambiental y económico”. Por otro lado, “los profesionales debemos de controlar de forma eficaz los riesgos de contagio, tanto en las superficies como en el empleo de los materiales de trabajo que utilizamos todos los días”, matizó Ramírez a lo largo de su exposición.
Con motivo del acto de presentación de las Olimpiadas de Biología de la Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid, los responsables de ABQ dieron a conocer los objetivos de la entidad, así como el proyecto Espacios Bioseguros.
De esta manera, ABQ, entidad europea especializada en bioseguridad, “desea llevar a cabo un protocolo de implantación de un certificado de calidad para garantizar el Espacio Bioseguro en las empresas e instituciones con un 80% de éxito en todos los análisis que hagamos a partir de ahora”, indicaron los responsables de la asociación.
Recordemos que “ABQ ha logrado seleccionar, junto a los colegios de biólogos de las distintas Comunidades Autónomas, soluciones eficientes que han sido contrastadas por la NASA”, concluyó Ramírez.
De esta manera, la asociación ABQ participó en las Olimpiadas de Biología de la Comunidad de Madrid, organizadas por el Colegio de Biólogos de la Comunidad de Madrid (COBCM) con el patrocinio de la Consejería de Educación y la colaboración de la Universidad Complutense, Universidad Autónoma y Editorial Santillana.

i HATE HATE HATE when i don't hang out with people on weekend nights. i just feel so wasteful. i don't like being alone. not because i thrive off the company of others. don't get me wrong, i'm not really a social butterfly. i actually keep to myself mostly. i just feel unproductive while i'm by myself. i'm a team player. MAN i say I a lot.
also, i assumed that all the lame things going on in my life would prevent me from being on flickr and make me not want to take pictures, but as you can see from my four pictures in three days, it's been quite the opposite. i'm rather inspired and have quite a bit of free time on my hands (because i have no friends... not really i'm just lacking a car and license to drive it).

Towards the end of World War II, as the Allies were landing in Europe it was discovered that several of the enemy's targets, like submarine pens and V2 rocket sites, were heavily protected in deep concrete bunkers which were impenetrable to conventional bombs. Bombing was often inaccurate, particularly when used to destroy narrow strategic targets like bridges and railway lines.
Following the famous "Dam Busters" raid in 1943, Sir Barnes Wallis was asked how long would it take to make a 10-ton bomb? His reply was, "five months if I could have all the labour available in Sheffield".
Within a few months the RAF had their first "Tallboy", a scaled down version of the 10-ton "Grand Slam", which was proving difficult to manufacture. "Tallboy" was designed to fall at supersonic speed and bury itself deep into ground before exploding, thus creating an earthquake effect to shake the target to pieces.
617 "Dam busters" Squadron was the first to use the bomb in 1944, just after "D Day", when they spectacularly destroyed the Saumur Tunnel near Bordeaux, thus preventing a complete Panzer battalion from reaching the Normandy beaches.
"Tallboy" destroyed the rocket research station at Peenemunde plus numerous launch pad sites, which were firing V1 & V2 rockets at London and Rotterdam. It was also used against the U-boat pens on the French Atlantic Coast.
The bomb was used to attack the "Tirpitz" battleship which had evaded attacks by conventional bombing raids and midget submarines. 617 & 9 Squadron RAF destroyed the 52,600-ton ship in Tromso Fjord Norway on 12th November 1944.

“Necesitamos tomar medidas preventivas de forma urgente bajo el paradigma del uso de las mejores tecnologías”
Luis de la Fuente Ramírez, presidente de ABQ, presentó Espacios Bioseguros junto al decano del Colegio de Biólogos de la Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid (COBCM), Ángel Fernández Ipar, como “un concepto en el que destacamos una serie de medidas de prevención para la población general por medio de un conjunto de soluciones tecnológicas para prevenir y minimizar los riesgos de contagio en, por ejemplo, espacios interiores, medios de transporte y otros, con el objetivo de controlar los agentes contaminantes de una forma eficaz y sostenible desde el punto de vista medioambiental y económico”. Por otro lado, “los profesionales debemos de controlar de forma eficaz los riesgos de contagio, tanto en las superficies como en el empleo de los materiales de trabajo que utilizamos todos los días”, matizó Ramírez a lo largo de su exposición.
Con motivo del acto de presentación de las Olimpiadas de Biología de la Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid, los responsables de ABQ dieron a conocer los objetivos de la entidad, así como el proyecto Espacios Bioseguros.
De esta manera, ABQ, entidad europea especializada en bioseguridad, “desea llevar a cabo un protocolo de implantación de un certificado de calidad para garantizar el Espacio Bioseguro en las empresas e instituciones con un 80% de éxito en todos los análisis que hagamos a partir de ahora”, indicaron los responsables de la asociación.
Recordemos que “ABQ ha logrado seleccionar, junto a los colegios de biólogos de las distintas Comunidades Autónomas, soluciones eficientes que han sido contrastadas por la NASA”, concluyó Ramírez.
De esta manera, la asociación ABQ participó en las Olimpiadas de Biología de la Comunidad de Madrid, organizadas por el Colegio de Biólogos de la Comunidad de Madrid (COBCM) con el patrocinio de la Consejería de Educación y la colaboración de la Universidad Complutense, Universidad Autónoma y Editorial Santillana.

Manifestation nationale contre le projet de loi de prévention de la délinquance le 18 novembre à Paris
PARIS (AP) -- Plusieurs syndicats des personnels de l'assistance sociale, de l'éducation, et de la justice appellent à une manifestation nationale, le 18 novembre à Paris, contre le projet de loi Sarkozy de prévention de la délinquance, texte qualifié de "liberticide" par ses détracteurs, a-t-on appris jeudi auprès de la FSU.
"Basé sur le contrôle et le fichage de larges catégories de population et notamment des enfants scolarisés, le projet (...) organise une mise sous surveillance généralisée de la population et aggrave considérablement la répression", estime la Fédération syndicale unitaire (premier syndicat de l'Education et de la Fonction publique d'Etat) dans un communiqué diffusé jeudi. "Il va à l'encontre de ce qui serait nécessaire à une véritable politique de prévention. Aucune mesure visant à l'amélioration d'actions réellement préventives dans les domaines de l'éducation, de l'accompagnement social et du soin n'est envisagée", déplore la fédération.
"Avec les organisations syndicales de travailleurs sociaux, de médecins, de psychiatres, de santé, d'éducation, de magistrats, d'avocats et des associations", la FSU appelle "tous les personnels à participer massivement à la manifestation nationale du samedi 18 novembre 2006 à Paris, et aux actions unitaires qui suivront".
Présenté le 28 juin dernier, le projet de loi doit être discuté cet automne au Parlement. Il ambitionne de s'attaquer "sans tabou" à toutes les causes de la délinquance, notamment celle des mineurs, après les violences de l'automne 2005 dans les banlieues. Jeudi, en marge d'un déplacement sur le thème de la rénovation urbaine à Villeneuve-La-Garenne (Hauts-de-Seine), le ministre de l'Intérieur Nicolas Sarkozy a proposé un amendement au projet de loi, afin de permettre le renvoi systématique devant une cour d'assises pour toute personne "qui portera atteinte à l'intégrité physique d'un policier, d'un gendarme ou d'un pompier". La principale proposition du projet de loi porte sur le rôle du maire, dont le ministre de l'Intérieur veut faire le pivot de la politique de prévention de la délinquance, avec notamment le pouvoir de procéder à des rappels à l'ordre à des mineurs et de mettre sous tutelle les allocations familiales.
Le projet de loi introduit aussi le concept nouveau d'une "présentation immédiate" au tribunal pour enfants pour les jeunes de 16 à 18 ans, mais la comparution immédiate restera réservée aux majeurs. AP

Yesterday, April 10, 2013 we celebrated the 147th Anniversary of the establishment of the ASPCA in New York City. Founded in New York City by Henry Bergh, Bergh based the program on the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in the UK in 1824 - though it was not given “Royal” status until 1840. As the excerpt from their web page below shows, the SPCA of Israel is greatly concerned about the welfare of animals as well!
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Israel—Tel Aviv-Yafo, is a philanthropic organization without any goal of a profit, which was founded in the year 1927, and which has been operating since then to prevent suffering and pain to animals.
The Society takes in abandoned animals and tries to find adopting homes for them. Similarly, we provide various services to the community: a veterinary clinic with subsidized prices, a boarding facility for pets, rescue and collection of animals in trouble and a department of education and guidance.
As a philanthropic organization with no intention of making a profit, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Israel—Tel Aviv-Yafo, does not receive any support from any governmental, municipal or any other official factor whatsoever. The Society is managed by a committee of volunteers who do not receive any compensation, and the funds of the Society are under the supervision of an auditor.
The 7,000 square meter area of our complex can house a population of more than 200 dogs and 50 cats. There is a stable with room for 12 horses and donkeys, and a "small animal corner". The complex is spacious, clean and quiet, because we want to prevent further suffering to the animals, and to get those we shelter the most comfortable conditions.
Paying proper attention to all of God’s creatures is not only the right thing to do, it is the scriptural thing to do as well. We find that it says in Proverbs 12:10, “A righteous man regards the life of his animal, but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.” God intended that we display mercy at all times, to both humans and animals. He also intends that we should adhere to His directives, especially the one in Psalm 122:6 - - that we pray for the peace of Jerusalem!

The QFES is the result of 150 years of evolution in Queensland's firefighting services; in fact the QFS was born in 1860 after a fire destroyed a Brisbane cabinet making workshop. The early years were tough for the Brisbane Fire Brigade and it was not until 1889 that the first firemen was employed.
The first legislation for rural fire management was the Act to Prevent the Careless Use of Fire 1865, and for state fire management, the Fire Brigades Act 1876. In 1990, the Queensland Fire Service and the Rural Fires Council were formed replacing the 81 Fire Boards in local government areas and the Rural Fires Board; this was the first step in creating a single fire service for Queensland.
In 1997, it became the Queensland Fire and Rescue Authority and 2001 saw another name change to the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service.
In 2013, QFRS merged with EMQ and the Corporate Services Division of the Department of Community Safety to become the current Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, encompassing Queensland Fire and Rescue Service, parts of the State Emergency Service, Emergency Management and the Rural Fire Service.
The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service professional Firefighters ensure a balance between the reduction of risk and enhancement of community resilience, whilst providing effective response and recovery capabilities in the primary hazard response areas of: fire and explosion; accident; rescue; environmental and imminent or declared disaster.
The Queensland Fire and Emergency Services provides specialist personnel with the skills and ability to provide combat support services for: land, marine, air and urban search and rescue; crime scene and forensic searches; missing person searches; animal disease outbreaks and communications.
Queensland Fire and Rescue Service
The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service is made up of approximately 2200 professional and 2000 Auxiliary (part-time) firefighters that are responsible for responding to almost every emergency. They are highly trained and work in a command structure with high standards to ensure safety. They have a proud history of protecting all Queenslanders and are highly valued by the community. They look after Queensland's Assets and population. To become a professional Firefighter involves a rigorous selection process, after which successful candidates undertake a four-month recruitment course. They then go on to partake in many years of intense study and training in all disciplines of rescue, wildfires, structural fires and major emergencies.
The Rural Fire Service (RFS), made up of approximately 9 000 volunteers (5000 active), approximately 1400 rural fire brigades. They are mainly responsible for responding to bushfires and have some land management capability. The current QFES model means that volunteers will support the Fire & Rescue Service in any emergency as required.
Queensland's professional Firefighters undertake a range of planning and preparation activities throughout the year. They are trained in Structural Firefighting, Wildland (forest and grassland) fires, vertical rescue, swift water rescue, road crash rescue, confined space rescue, trench rescue and urban search and rescue (USAR) and Hazardous material mitigation. Fire hazard (vegetation fires) mitigation and response is the primary role of Fire and Rescue and Rural Fire Service in the outer areas. Rural Fire Brigades, in conjunction with Rural Fire Service permanent staff, Fire & rescue Service, local councils, national parks rangers, and local landholders, undertake a range of planning and preparation activities throughout the year to ensure communities are well prepared for the fire season.
One of these activities is hazard reduction burns. Hazard reduction burns use fire under controlled circumstances to reduce excess vegetation and minimise the potential for bushfires to get out of control.
The Queensland State Emergency Service (SES) is a statewide organisation of volunteers from a variety of backgrounds who respond to emergencies and disasters across the State as needed. They are trained and equipped by local councils and QFES, to help their communities across a range of functions, and their primary purpose is to assist the community. The SES is designed to empower people to help themselves and others in their community in times of emergency and disaster. The basic concept is one of self-help and mutual assistance within each community.
SES members also assist other emergency services with provision of: emergency lighting; emergency welfare services; management of traffic at emergency scenes and emergency communications.

On February 2, Secretary McDonald and I will host a VA national summit on Veteran suicide prevention. Why a national summit? Because Veteran suicide impacts all Americans and needs to be addressed in a coordinated effort with government and community stakeholders. And, because all Americans, and VA in particular, have a duty to help Veterans suffering from the hidden scars of military service that lead them to think suicide is their only option. We must do better and this summit will help us to determine our future course.
The “Preventing Veteran Suicide – A Call to Action” summit will bring together VA and DoD leaders, mental health professionals, Veteran Service Organizations, Veterans and their families, and other key partners. These national leaders will direct their attention to how we can best help Veterans and their families access appropriate mental health services.
It will be an honor to welcome Susan and Richard Selke, as guests at the summit. Their son, Clay Hunt, was a Marine Corps Veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan who took his own life in 2011. Congress subsequently passed the Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans Act, which President Obama signed in February of last year. Their commitment to improving mental health care for Veterans like their son has been inspiring.
Also at the summit, Senator Elizabeth Dole will discuss the role of Caregivers and Dr. Ron C. Kessler of Harvard Medical School will deliver a presentation on “Researching Risk for Suicide among Veterans- What Are We Missing?” These are just two of the many supportive experts joining us for this important call to action.
We already know that America’s Veterans are at higher overall risk for suicide than the general public. Veterans suffering from conditions like posttraumatic stress, depression, insomnia, and chronic pain are particularly vulnerable. However, groundbreaking research shows us that Veterans who are fully engaged in VA care are at lower risk of suicide than those who are not. It is essential that information about resources for Veterans at risk for suicide is readily available to Veterans and those close to them.
We want Veterans to come to us, but we must also go to them and build effective networks of communication and care across communities and health organizations. We must be far more proactive and creative in our approach. I ask each of you to consider how you can make a difference.
I addressed our efforts yesterday in an op-ed that appeared in the Palm Beach Post and many other papers across the U.S. I encourage you to take a moment and read my op-ed.
I know that by discussing the many aspects of this unacceptable crisis in our Veterans’ lives, we will advance their care and treatment. I will report back to you with another blog following the summit. Thank you for all you do for Veterans each and every day.

View the original farmhouse that five years later was joined by a second facility, Mondloch II (MHII) shelter, in response to the growing need for family shelter.
Over the next two decades, MHII received a myriad of support through community service and activities, leadership and corporate engagement.
After 20 years of continuous service, the Mondloch II building reached the end of its life. The building lacked ample space and accessibility and needed substantial rehabilitation.
Under the leadership of the Fairfax County Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD), Mondloch II is being rehabilitated into The Residences at Mondloch, a building of 20 fully-furnished efficiency units. The rehabilitation, being constructed under the existing zoning, will repurpose the space to serve homeless persons in rental housing.

Outside Victoria’s Parliament Buildings today, the Government of British Columbia and the BC Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BC SPCA) are giving a voice to those who can’t speak for themselves, in recognizing Animal Abuse Prevention Day.
The BC SPCA is celebrating 120 years of serving and protecting animals in 2015. To mark the anniversary, the organization is fighting cruelty with kindness, by launching a year-long movement, Million Acts of Kindness, meant to inspire a million acts of kindness for companion, farm and wild animals. On February 2, Secretary McDonald and I will host a VA national summit on Veteran suicide prevention. Why a national summit? Because Veteran suicide impacts all Americans and needs to be addressed in a coordinated effort with government and community stakeholders. And, because all Americans, and VA in particular, have a duty to help Veterans suffering from the hidden scars of military service that lead them to think suicide is their only option. We must do better and this summit will help us to determine our future course.
The “Preventing Veteran Suicide – A Call to Action” summit will bring together VA and DoD leaders, mental health professionals, Veteran Service Organizations, Veterans and their families, and other key partners. These national leaders will direct their attention to how we can best help Veterans and their families access appropriate mental health services.
It will be an honor to welcome Susan and Richard Selke, as guests at the summit. Their son, Clay Hunt, was a Marine Corps Veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan who took his own life in 2011. Congress subsequently passed the Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans Act, which President Obama signed in February of last year. Their commitment to improving mental health care for Veterans like their son has been inspiring.
Also at the summit, Senator Elizabeth Dole will discuss the role of Caregivers and Dr. Ron C. Kessler of Harvard Medical School will deliver a presentation on “Researching Risk for Suicide among Veterans- What Are We Missing?” These are just two of the many supportive experts joining us for this important call to action.
We already know that America’s Veterans are at higher overall risk for suicide than the general public. Veterans suffering from conditions like posttraumatic stress, depression, insomnia, and chronic pain are particularly vulnerable. However, groundbreaking research shows us that Veterans who are fully engaged in VA care are at lower risk of suicide than those who are not. It is essential that information about resources for Veterans at risk for suicide is readily available to Veterans and those close to them.
We want Veterans to come to us, but we must also go to them and build effective networks of communication and care across communities and health organizations. We must be far more proactive and creative in our approach. I ask each of you to consider how you can make a difference.
I addressed our efforts yesterday in an op-ed that appeared in the Palm Beach Post and many other papers across the U.S. I encourage you to take a moment and read my op-ed.
I know that by discussing the many aspects of this unacceptable crisis in our Veterans’ lives, we will advance their care and treatment. I will report back to you with another blog following the summit. Thank you for all you do for Veterans each and every day.

“Necesitamos tomar medidas preventivas de forma urgente bajo el paradigma del uso de las mejores tecnologías”
Luis de la Fuente Ramírez, presidente de ABQ, presentó Espacios Bioseguros junto al decano del Colegio de Biólogos de la Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid (COBCM), Ángel Fernández Ipar, como “un concepto en el que destacamos una serie de medidas de prevención para la población general por medio de un conjunto de soluciones tecnológicas para prevenir y minimizar los riesgos de contagio en, por ejemplo, espacios interiores, medios de transporte y otros, con el objetivo de controlar los agentes contaminantes de una forma eficaz y sostenible desde el punto de vista medioambiental y económico”. Por otro lado, “los profesionales debemos de controlar de forma eficaz los riesgos de contagio, tanto en las superficies como en el empleo de los materiales de trabajo que utilizamos todos los días”, matizó Ramírez a lo largo de su exposición.
Con motivo del acto de presentación de las Olimpiadas de Biología de la Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid, los responsables de ABQ dieron a conocer los objetivos de la entidad, así como el proyecto Espacios Bioseguros.
De esta manera, ABQ, entidad europea especializada en bioseguridad, “desea llevar a cabo un protocolo de implantación de un certificado de calidad para garantizar el Espacio Bioseguro en las empresas e instituciones con un 80% de éxito en todos los análisis que hagamos a partir de ahora”, indicaron los responsables de la asociación.
Recordemos que “ABQ ha logrado seleccionar, junto a los colegios de biólogos de las distintas Comunidades Autónomas, soluciones eficientes que han sido contrastadas por la NASA”, concluyó Ramírez.
De esta manera, la asociación ABQ participó en las Olimpiadas de Biología de la Comunidad de Madrid, organizadas por el Colegio de Biólogos de la Comunidad de Madrid (COBCM) con el patrocinio de la Consejería de Educación y la colaboración de la Universidad Complutense, Universidad Autónoma y Editorial Santillana.

ABQ, entidad sin ánimo de lucro que se encargará de buscar soluciones para todos los sectores de la actividad profesional, es una asociación que propone y busca, por medio del debate, la transmisión del conocimiento e información precisa sobre determinadas amenazas para el sector humano, sobre todo con las nuevas bacterias y el tratamiento y análisis de casos concretos. En la actualidad, representará los intereses de los colectivos allegados por la firma de Convenios de Colaboración en materia de divulgación, formación y colaboración en la redacción de estudios e informes especializados.
Objetivos ABQ:
1º.- Concienciar a la sociedad sobre los riesgos que les afectan en materia de bioseguridad en su contexto universal. Riesgos que afectan a todos los espacios públicos donde la gente interacciona físicamente entre sí y la necesidad, por ello, de generar “Espacios Bioseguros” donde estos riesgos sean minimizados.
2º.- Encontrar, evaluar y difundir a la sociedad las mejores técnicas y/o tecnologías disponibles para minimizar dichos riesgos. Dichas técnicas y/o tecnologías una vez encontradas deberán ser evaluadas por los comités científico-técnicos formados expertos de la comunidad científica.
