An encyclopedic art museum - it features a collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art in its permanent collection. Its holdings also include American Art, Old Masters, European and American decorative arts, Asian art, modern and contemporary art, and architecture and industrial and graphic design. It's history can be traced to a free art school and gallery - the Chicago Academy of Design - founded in 1866. Officially established in 1879 - it has been in its present location since 1893. At one million square feet, it is the second largest art museum in the United States, after the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Stefan has put my KLR 650 in a box, because he's done something to it for my Christmas present (in addition to *already* creating custom boxes for it)- but he doesn't want me to see it (or ride it) until Dec. 24. What could it be? (at left is my Honda Nighthawk 650, before I sold it).
Curt Huot from Digi-Key came down to UMM today to present the traveling trophy (which we get to have in our display case for the next year) and the check for $3K, both because one of our teams took first at this year's Digi-Key Collegiate Computing Competition.

Ce mardi 19 novembre, Najat Vallaud-Belkacem a reçu au ministère l’équipe et les artistes d’ Unissons nos voix pour une présentation en avant-première de leur clip contre les violences sexuelles faites aux femmes.
De nombreuses et nombreux artistes venus d’univers différents mais réunis par le label WASS’UP autour du même combat, et qui ont prêté leur voix contre les violences faites aux femmes. Une partie des ventes du single et de l’album sera reversée à l’association FIT (Une femme, Un toit) qui a pour objectif l’hébergement et l’accompagnement de jeunes femmes isolées.
La présentation du clip a été suivie d’une interprétation live de la chanson.

Have my past photos come to haunt me? I am always comparing my past to my present. Wondering if my old style was better compared to what I am doing now. Like I am looking at my own growth.
The Brentsville Courthouse was built in 1822 by William Claytors (Architect). It was the third county courthouse in Prince William County. The first courthouse was built next to the Occoquan River at present day Jefferson Davis Highway (U. S. Route 1) on the 534 acre Woodbridge Plantation of George Mason II. This included the ferry landing to/from Colchester in Fairfax County.
Prince William County was established in 1731 by an Act of the Virginia General Assembly. It was originally part of Stafford County. The boundaries were set by state statute, but were changed after 10 years when Fairfax became an separate county. In 1743, the second courthouse was built at Cedar Run along present day Aden Road (Route 646). to accommodate citizens with courthouse in a central location relevant to its new boundaries. A 2009 Department of Historic Resources marks the location of the second courthouse which is next to a closed road that is the boundary of Marine Corps Base Quantico.
The exact courthouse site was discovered by Prince William Police Department Captain Rick Younce. While hunting he discovered the foundation cornerstone which identified it as the Second Prince William County Courthouse. The second courthouse is historically significant due to the men who practiced law in this isolated part of the county. This includes Henry Lee, the father of Virginia Governor "Lighthorse Harry" Lee, and the grandfather of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.
By 1759, Prince William County was divided again to establish Fauquier County. The seat of Prince William County was moved each time its boundaries were changed in order for it to be close to all county residents. This realignment of geographical boundaries meant 3 different courthouse sites in 30 years. The third of these sites was the town of Dumfries. It's prominence as a merchant center, both domestic and international shipping, rivaled the ports of Boston and New York. During the 18th century, Dumfries was the largest port in the world for the export of tobacco. This is why the Prince William County seal contains a tobacco plant.
In 1820, the Town of Brentsville was established on 50 acres to become the fourth seat of Prince William County. Many residents had moved west for better farm land after tobacco had exhausted much of the land in the eastern part of the county. This meant the county seat of Dumfries was too far east for the western residents to travel for court and county business. In 1822, the courthouse and jail were completed in the community village of Brentsville. The fourth different location of the county seat occurred because Brentsville was centrally located in Prince William County along the only suitable road that led from the shipping port of Dumfries to the Shenandoah Valley. In 1893, the county seat moved to Manassas; and Brentsville became a rural community which allowed it to retain much of its 19th century character.
In 1897, the fifth county courthouse and seat moved to Manassas at the intersection of Grant Avenue and Lee Avenue in Manassas. The modern day address is 9248 Lee Avenue. This building was used as the Prince William County courthouse until 1982, when it no longer met the increasing needs of an expanding population. By the time the sixth and current courthouse was completed at 9311 Lee Avenue, the fifth courthouse was used to hear Juvenile & Domestic Relations matters. The fifth Manassas Courthouse was best known as the site of the 1911 Peace Festival where President Taft delivered a speech on the grounds of the courthouse to kick off the week-long festivities. The 1911 Peace Festival marked the 50th anniversary of the First Battle of Manassas.

6th of 7 quilts made for my family for Christmas 2012.
Pattern is Mary's Triangles with Triangles from Sally Schneider's Book - Scrap Mania. Pattern is also known as Chain of Threads or Chain of Friendship.
The back was designed to use left over yardage.
Quilt is approximately 56 1/2" x 76 1/2"
Fabrics are from Moda's brushed cotton Preppy Plaids line - purchased from CityCraft - citycraftonline.com/ & from WhipStitch - www.etsy.com/shop/WhipstitchFabrics/
The background fabrics are a mix of Kona & Moda Bella light blues & beiges purchased from The Fat Quarter Shop - www.fatquartershop.com/
I used the "smooth" side of the brushed cotton for the front of the quilt & the "brushed" side for the back & the binding. I did not wash the fabrics prior to making the quilt as I usually do with a true flannel & love the extra crinkly look the quilt has after washing.
Thread used for quilting was Aurifil 50 wt in Beige (2000) purchased from The Fat Quarter Shop - www.fatquartershop.com/
Batting used is Quilter's Dream, 100% Cotton, Request loft. Purchased from Hancock's of Paducah - www.hancocks-paducah.com/
I am in love with this batting!
Relied heavily on EQ7 to plan this quilt.

La Blanca del majuelo (Aporia crataegi) es una mariposa de la familia de los piéridos, es decir, emparentada con la mariposa de la col (Pieris brassicae) a la cuál recuerda en cuanto a forma y coloración. Su principal característica es que tiene las venas radiales marcadas de negro. La encontramos en la Sierra de Baza, solo tienen una generación al año que vuela desde el final de la primavera hasta el final del verano. La planta nutricia de la oruga es el majuelo (Crataegus monogyna), en esta planta la mariposa deposita las huevos y al nacer las orugas se alimentan de sus hojas, al ser una oruga comunal es fácil detectarla sobre la planta.

While not much to look at as a photo, this event was certainly a trip highlight...
I think we got pretty lucky with the timing of our most recent trip. The first weekend was the last days of the Flower and Garden Festival and Star Wars weekend started during our last weekend. The bonus surprise was that Pixar Weekend was also going on when we arrived!
This event was a lot of fun and we had a great time getting our picture taken with the characters. In addition to the characters, they also had speaking sessions with various Pixar notables called "Presenting Pixar."
We attended the session with Michael Giacchino, which for you Pixar fans, he composed the music for The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Up, and Cars 2. He has an impressive resume and you can see some of his other works here.
Giacchino went through some of his stories from growing up, getting started with home films, and some of his breakthrough moments including meeting Steven Spielberg for the first time and his various projects with JJ Abrams.
But for me, the highlights were the stories behind the music of Ratatouille and Up. I love the music in Up and he shared one of the key scenes with alternate scores and how they kept experimenting with the music until the emotion conveyed to the viewer was just right.
Overall it was a great time, and I would highly recommend Presenting Pixar if they ever do it again! And, yes, if you look closely you will see that the MCs were the green army men...

i've got a present for my birthday. i know it's late:) but better late then never. and i love colors very! it's from small_something. not so easy to eat this beauty;)
A present I made for my advisor. I am proud of this one! I wanted to make something that had a tiny bit of authenticity. I found this Victorian embroidery pattern and worked off of these color scheme slides, and went shopping for stuff. The paper came from Paper Presentation and I liked it pretty well. (I was looking for something darker, sort of like the trimming ribbon, but I couldn't find it anywhere.) The large center ribbon came from M&J, and I dithered over the secondary ribbon forever. I bought at least three different things I didn't end up using and was just never quite happy with it. ("But it doesn't look VICTORIAN ENOUGH!") Ultimately though, I discovered my new favorite store in the city, Tinsel Trading, where I carried around an armful of twelve different things in an ecstatic frenzy of swear words, before buying the thin purple one for the embroidery, and the top one for trimming.
I LOVE THAT STORE SO MUCH. I WANT TO BRING YOU THERE!
So... first I cut the paper, sort of badly; it'd been a while since I cut paper precisely. But it was okay. I needed a front and a back, because at first I thought I'd be able to make the bookmark look nice on both sides, but no, there was definitely going to be an ugly side. I glued down the ribbon on the top sheet, leaving a long tail to fold back up later. I poked holes at the sides based on this "sewing on paper" tutorial. I had to enlarge the holes a little, so I did a pass with pushing the needle through them before I did the sewing part. Then I threaded it with the purple ribbon and did the embroidery, carefully so the ribbon wouldn't twist up. (I also tried to avoid trapping dog hair in the stitches, but...) Then I glued down the backing paper, wrapped the rose ribbon's tail up the back and over the top a little bit. (So, the back just has a pink stripe.) Then I covered up the seam by using this French bow tutorial for the trim, and sewed that down with thread.
Then I clamped it down underneath a bunch of heavy books for the glue to set and dry overnight, and hoped that it wouldn't look too knobbly in the morning. And it didn't! It was okay. Not a delicate Victorian thing, exactly, but all the bits were executed pretty well. The "wrong side" of the ribbons were a problem. And better, thinner glue would have helped improve it. I found this hilariously specific glue recommendation website and did a couple spot tests: Krazy Glue wasn't good at bonding the ribbon to the paper, and it left a big stain when it dried. Normal school glue did okay if I used really small amounts, but it left me compromising with that gluey stiffness in the end.
Anyway. Hey look I made a pretty bookmark. It was a really nice present. (And if I don't write all this down, I'll never remember how I did it.)
The current home of Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church was designed by Alfred S. Alschuler and built for the Chicago Sinai Congregation in 1912. The city’s third oldest Jewish congregation, founded by German Jewish immigrants in 1861, has moved a number of times in its history, but this imposing neoclassical building was its home until the 1940s, when it moved to Hyde Park. The building once included a large auditorium, classrooms, meeting spaces, a gym and a pool, which has since been filled in. It housed the Corpus Christi High School until that Catholic school built a new building nearby. In 1961, Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church moved into the building.
My mother was confirmed from Sinai in 1939. Her class photograph is on display on the second floor of the present synagogue on W. Delaware Place, one-half block from our residence.

COMEMORAÇÃO DOS 47 ANOS DO ZAPATA MOTO CLUBE
O evento que durou dois dia trouxe quatro mil pessoas presentes, entre moto clubes e simpatizantes de todos os estados do Brasil.
O evento contou com diversas bandas, café da manhã, praça de alimentação, área de camping, exposição de carros antigos e muita diversão.
A Zapata M.C promoveu essa festa não somente em comemoração ao aniversário do clube, mas com um objetivo de ação social, arrecadando uma tonelada de alimentos, que vão ser doados as entidades carentes da cidade de Ferraz de Vasconcelos. O evento da Zapata que ocorreu no complexo Hugo Mazzuca nos dia 17 e 18 de setembro, contou com o apoio e parceria da Prefeitura Municipal de Ferraz de Vasconcelos junto a Secretaria de Cultura e Turismo. Segundo alguns representantes do evento, nos disseram que o Prefeito Dr. Jorge está com a idéia de tornar essa festa como calendário cultural da cidade.
Pra quem não conhece muito a historia da Zapata M.C, esta entidade foi formada em 1963, entre uma brincadeira de amigos, depois de terem assistido o filme de Emiliano Zapata, que relata uma história sobre ajudar o próximo, esta historia fez que os formadores da Zapata se identificassem com a causa, e então formaram a Entidade Filantrópica Zapata Moto Clube que preza muito isso, e também as boas condutas nas estradas.
Tendo na Diretoria: Fundador e Presidente de honra Torello, Presidente em entidade Tijolo, vice-presidente Tijolinho, diretor geral Sandro, diretor relações publicas Renê, tesoureiro Zangado, primeiro secretario Peter e segundo secretario Guerra.
Essas pessoas encabeçaram na parte burocrática do evento, nas idéias e organizações, juntamente com os integrantes de todas as facções do Brasil, em tudo são;

The Otter Crest tide pools are considered to be some of Oregon’s most prolific and are accessible at low tide every day. The Inn’s private stairway leads to the beach and tide pools. Otter Crest Beach is a popular place to pick up many colored pebbles and agates. A stroll southward from the stairs takes you past a small waterfall to the cave entrance of the Devil’s Punchbowl, a natural formation that can be entered at low tide.

Located on the Inn’s 35 acres is a landscaped children’s playground, an acre-sized grass lawn for yard games and events, a large heated outdoor swimming pool with adjoining Jacuzzi and two saunas, an outdoor tennis court, a picnic area with barbeques, and a nature preserve with ancient trees.

A 10 minute walk through our preserve takes you to Beverly Beach and the village of Otter Rock. Beverly Beach is a wide and pristine beach that extends from Otter Rock for 5 uninterrupted miles to the Yaquina Head light house. Surfers are present almost every day near the Otter Rock access. And it’s a great place to fly a kite.

Beverly Beach is thought to be one of the best places along the coast to pick up agates and fossils. About 15 million years ago many forms of shelled creatures were buried in the sandstone that is now exposed as cliffs along the beach. This winter an ancient stump washed in and lodged just below the Devil’s Punchbowl State Park. The snapshot shown here was taken in May. Another stump is on display at the Beverly Beach State Park about a mile south. It was carbon dated as being 4,200 years old.

In Otter Rock is the Devil’s Punchbowl State Park with views into the Punchbowl, a collapsed sea cave. Whale watching is popular here and official whale watch stations are set up during the major whale migrations.

Otter Rock is home to the country’s western-most winery. Established in 1997 this small winery has gained national recognition for their unique method of fermenting their wines under the ocean’s salt spray. The Flying Dutchman Winery is open every day from 11 am to 6 pm during the summer months and 11 am to 5 pm the remainder of the year. Also in Otter Rock is an Oregon Coast icon, Mo’s Seafood Restaurant. Known for their chowder, Mo’s has been delighting seafood aficionados for many years.
Perhaps the most photographed attraction on the entire Oregon Coast is JoAnn’s 1934 Dodge Ice Cream and Espresso Truck. She, too, is an Otter Rock icon serving up lattes, espresso, ice cream and her ever present smile.
