33203 climbs away from Salisbury on Christmas Eve 1986 with the 0650 Waterloo to Exeter St Davids service.
In October 1986 I had bought my first SLR camera and two months later, putting it politely, I was still very much getting to grips with it.
On Christmas Eve I was aimed to capture some images of class 33s and 50s at Salisbury, which operated virtually all passenger trains at Salisbury then.
What I hadn't bothered with was the weather forecast, which combined the saying 'red sky in the morning, shepherd's warning' and the photographer's saying of 'f4 at a fortnight'. A heavy overnight frost was about to be obliterated by a blanket of cloud rolling in from the west.
Out I trotted and this photograph was the closest I came to any sun on a train that day. Everything else was hopelessly composed, dark or speed-blurred, or sometimes all three.
However, 34 years on, it is now clear the day wasn't a complete write-off: this image has reacted well to the wonders of today's photo-processing, and a reasonable image has finally appeared, 34 years after I took the original photograph.
Birthday present
This is an image of wild flowers in brass thimble. This was definately the most difficult assignment so far. I looked like a micro-surgeon, operating on small bouquet: converging lens was above bouquet, in my left hand was a pincette, in my right hand was pair of scissors. Also, I had to work very quickly as wild flowers wilt within fifteen minutes. I've worked on this for two days in order to be ready for the big shoot; I've practiced the speed so I could do it quickly and in enough time. At the end I've managed to capture these small wild flowers in a thimble as I've imagined it.
I wish you a lot of years of succesful work and thank you all for helping me learn so much about macro photography.

Los estromatolitos poco a poco van enlazando las piedras del río formando figuras como estas.
Estos estromatolitos son estructuras minerales originadas por la actividad metabólica de las cianobacterias presentes en sus aguas.
¿Por qué este río es tan especial para la ciencia?
Durante mucho tiempo las aguas del Tinto se creyeron carentes de vida, hasta el punto de que se plantearon procesos para la limpieza de "su contaminación", que afortunadamente no llegaron a desarrollarse. Y en cierto modo sí que parece un río estéril porque no hay organismos eucariotas superiores en sus aguas; sin embargo, su biodiversidad es enorme: se han descrito más de 1.100 especies distintas de hongos y un centenar de algas, además de protistas y bacterias.
La aparente contaminación del río no es tal, sino que se trata del resultado de un complejo proceso de interacción entre las comunidades bacterianas que lo habitan y el sustrato. Algunas bacterias presentes en el río no obtienen su energía al quemar con oxígeno la glucosa y otros nutrientes como hacemos gran parte de los seres vivos, sino que la obtienen a expensas de los minerales que afloran de la franja pirítica de Huelva.
Por tanto, las condiciones de extrema acidez y de elevadas concentraciones de iones férrico y sulfato en las aguas del Tinto son debidas a la actividad quimiolitotrófica de los microorganismos que lo habitan y que son capaces de oxidar los sulfuros metálicos, en alta concentración en la zona de afloramiento del Tinto.
Lo que hace del Tinto un lugar especial para el estudio de las posibilidades de existencia de vida en Marte es que los seres vivos que lo habitan no han llegado de otros lugares y se han adaptado a este medio tan extremo, sino que han ido evolucionando en el propio río y han ido modulando el medio en el que viven.
El conocimiento de todo esto nos debe llevar a la necesidad de defender la protección de ese ecosistema tan excepcional, por eso es muy lamentable que los vertidos que muy a menudo transforman en los últimos tiempos la coloración de sus aguas (probablemente procedentes del vertedero de residuos tóxicos de Nerva), o la reapertura de la mina estén deteriorándolo muy rápidamente.

Quaglietta (AV)
The history of Quaglietta begins when, to stop the Saracen incursions in the Sele Valley, it was decided to build 3 fortresses: Valva, Senerchia and Quaglietta, (which however at the time was called castrum Quallectae).
The first settlement was therefore a military fortress built on a rocky spur (284 m above sea level) to which a village was added over time.
The name has nothing to do with quails as many believe but with the ancient Latin name of the area or Acque electe which translates as pure water and refers to the richness and purity of the waters that flow in the area.
Although the town is closely linked to the municipalities of the Sele Valley belonging to the province of Salerno, it is part of the province of Avellino and is a fraction of the municipality of Calabritto.
The 1980 earthquake hit this town hard but it was renovated with great attention and today the ancient medieval village retains its ancient splendor and is a tourist attraction.
La storia di Quaglietta inizia quando per frenare le incursioni di saraceni nella Valle del Sele fu decisa la costruzione delle 3 fortezze: Valva, Senerchia e Quaglietta, (che però all'epoca si chiamava castrum Quallectae) .

Il primo insediamento fu quindi una fortezza militare costruita su uno sperone roccioso (284 m sul livello del mare) a cui nel tempo si aggiunse un borgo.
Il nome non ha nulla a che fare con le quaglie come in molti credono ma con l'antico nome latino della zona ovvero Acque electe la cui traduzione è acqua pura e fa riferimento alla ricchezza e purezza delle acque che sgorgano in zona.
Pur essendo il paese strettamente legato ai comuni della Valle del Sele appartenenti alla provincia di Salerno fa parte della provincia di Avellino ed è una frazione del comune di Calabritto.
Il terremoto del 1980 ha colpito duramente questo paese che però è stato ristrutturato con grande attenzione e oggi l'antico borgo medievale conserva l'antico splendore ed è una attrazione turistica.

brought to me yesterday evening by my Timmy :-) He always let her run for a moment in the living room and then caught her again. I was able to catch her with a glass and of course she was quickly snapped before I let her out in front of the house :-) Hopefully I didn't hurt her tail with the glass.
I locked Timmy in the living room for this time. He then looked disappointed that I didn't properly appreciate his gift. He had probably thought that we could chase the mouse together in the living room ;-)

Teddy is all about forbidden spaces. We keep him out of bedrooms as he tends to be a little thief, but he never misses an opportunity when presented. We’ve been redecorating a small bedroom and there is absolutely nothing in it of interest to Teddy. But this morning I opened the door for just a second - and got this….Looking seriously pleased with himself. He posed all over the room
The present Stirling Old Bridge was built in the 1400s or 1500.
The stone bridge was constructed on rubble foundations around 1500 and replaced earlier wooden/ timber bridges, including that on which the Battle of Stirling Bridge was fought.
The bridge originally had arches at either end and a defensive gate at the end nearer the burgh. Tolls were levied on goods being taken across the bridge.
In December 1745 General Blakeney, lieutenant governor of Stirling⁹ Castle, had one of the bridge arches destroyed to hinder the movement of the Jacobite Army. The destroyed arch was rebuilt in 1749.
In May 1833 the adjacent new road bridge was opened to traffic and the Old Bridge was closed to wheeled traffic.
The bridge was designated as a Category A Listed Building in 1965.
The bridge today remains one of the best medieval masonry arch bridges in Scotland.
