The present ruins date from the 13th to the 16th centuries, though built on the site of an early medieval fortification. Founded in the 13th century, Urquhart played a

role in the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century. It was subsequently held as a royal castle, and was raided on several occasions by the MacDonald Earls

of Ross. The castle was granted to the Clan Grant in 1509, though conflict with the MacDonalds continued. Despite a series of further raids the castle was

strengthened, only to be largely abandoned by the middle of the 17th century. Urquhart was partially destroyed in 1692 to prevent its use by Jacobite forces, and

subsequently decayed. In the 20th century it was placed in state care and opened to the public: it is now one of the most-visited castles in Scotland.

I present this image not as a finished piece of art butmore as a study - a sketch if you will. In the same way an artist might observe a scene I set out to do the same. It's often said It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see and this is so true when it comes to photography. Here I'd set out to find something very elusive in our native English deciduous woodland and I'm not talking red squirrels or badgers - it's more subtle than that. I wanted to find a woodland scene with depth, texture and interest and devoid of clutter, distraction and untidyness. Our deciduous woodlands are not orderly or regimented and so such scenes need to be hunted down. It's quite a challenge. I needed pools of soft light and areas of shade and shadow. I needed layers of texture, colour and vegetation and I needed them all to come together in a pleasing way to allow the eye to rove around and through. I'd like to think I found it here and as these are local woodlands I may well be returning.

I'm very comfortable handling all snakes except the poisonous ones. Here is Elmer's second snake plaything this week. I always rescue them but wonder if the cats teeth have infected the snake. Oh well it is a harmless and helpful Garter Snake so off it goes.

Present-day Dardo county broadly corresponds to the heart of the ancient Chakla Kingdom, which until the mid-20th century was governed by the Chakla Gyelpo from Dartsedo town. It therefore includes both the Minyak hinterland of the Tibetan plateau and the plunging gorge formed by the Gyeto chu and Yakra chu tributaries of the Gyarong.

The administrative capital is at Dartsedo (Cn Litang),

Tiny curling tendrils from a waning pink Spider Chrysanthemum at Smith's Lyman Conservatory. The show ended last Sunday, but most of the flowers are still in place. They're still lovely, as they gracefully depart, and their petals become more and more translucent and delicate. 🌸

Human occupation of Castle Hill and present day Bratislava date back millennia. In antiquity a sophisticated Celtic civilization emerged here. Archaeological investigation on Castle Hill revealed Celtic-minted coins bearing the names of chieftains in Latin letters and evidence of significant trade with Rome. Unfortunately, historians have no idea what the Celts called the city that is now Bratislava.

Sometime in late antiquity or the early middle ages the Slavs arrived, eventually organizing themselves into Great Moravia, a hazily understood Slavic Christian state that once ruled over large areas of Central Europe. A Frankish text from this era refers to the city as Brezalauspurc, Old German for "Braslav's castle."

After Great Moravia's collapse much of present day Slovakia came under the control of the Hungarians, who called the city Pozsony. But in 1526, the Hungarian King Louis II was killed by invading Ottomans at the Battle of Mohacs, and the Hungarian crown--including what remained of Hungary outside of Ottoman control--passed to the Austrian Habsburgs, who called the city Pressburg.

The city now became the capital of Royal Hungary, the Habsburg ruled portion of Hungary that did not fall to the Ottomans. For three centuries, Hungarian monarchs were crowned in the Gothic Saint Martin's Cathedral (left of image) and Castle Hill became the site of a great Habsburg palace. Pozsony/Pressburg was a thriving multiethnic city, with many Slavs, Germans, and Magyars, (not to mention migrants from elsewhere in Europe) calling the city by its various names according to their own language or preference.

After the Habsburg reconquest of Ottoman-occupied Hungary in the late seventeenth century, the political center of Hungary gradually shifted back to Buda. By the late eighteenth century, Castle Hill lost its military and royal significance, and it eventually burned and fell into ruin. Meanwhile, Slovak resentment of Hungarian influence gave rise to a growing nationalist movement, and--with the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the end of the First World War--to the formation of Czechoslovakia, conceived of as a Slavic nation.

In 1919 Czechoslovak authorities, wanting a new name for the city that distinguished it as a Slavic, as opposed to German or Hungarian city, renamed it Bratislava. Ironically, this name was adopted because a Slovak scholar somewhat misinterpreted the Old German term Brezalauspurc, believing the city was named for a Slavic Duke Bretislav, rather than Braslav's Castle. In the 1950s and 60s the ruins of the old castle, once a symbol of Habsburg and Hungarian power, were rebuilt to house the Museum of History in Bratislava, a branch of the Slovak National Museum.

One of the OG figures that arrived yesterday

One of only seven Baha'i temples in the world, the Baha'i House of Worship in the northern Chicago suburb of Wilmette symbolizes unity and invites prayer to God, according to its Web-site description. In an effort to capture a nontraditional view of the temple, seen here in the background, I headed over to nearby Wilmette Harbor, where activity is beginning to pick up following a long, cold winter. This enabled me to claim two themes with this image for the Our Daily Challenge Group: “Symbol” and “Wet.” The temple is quite a magnificent structure, and I'll likely post a closer, more traditional shot of it in the future.

I have been thinking of something I could buy with some money that I received after the passing of my brother and I decided to buy myself something that I didn't really need, but have been wanting for a long time. I decided to buy a secondhand Canon 1DX and whenever I use it, I will think of my brother whilst doing something that I love.
