Socially facilitated preening.

As the number of individuals increases, the likelihood that at least one will happen to preen will increase, perhaps allowing preening to spread more frequently to neighbours. With increased density, individuals are also in closer visual contact with each other. Socially facilitated preening may be common to group-living birds. Preening appeared to spread from neighbour to neighbour, and is more synchronous than expected by chance.

This Black Billed Gull takes care of its feathers...... Is it because he is wooing a female nearby?

I’m amazed at how birds with a big schnoz – whether tiny hummingbirds or enormous white pelicans like these – manage to preen themselves. Surely there must be parts beyond reach?

Northern Pygmy Owl (Glaucidium californicum)

This little guy was very obliging. We were able to walk all around it and underneath it without a care from the owl. It had just fed recently as can be seen by the blood and entrails sticking to it's beak. Little pygmy devils, those talons are very fierce! It began to preen shortly after it fluffed up as it is in this image. Difficult conditions to photograpgh due to the harsh sky conditions and the snowy background, very bright had to push 2 stops to expose it properly!

(Their necks are extremely bright in direct sun. It took some post-processing work to kill most of the glare!)

These swans stayed in this shallow water in a quiet corner of the harbour for a long time, washing, preening and fluffing their feathers. This is pretty much as I took it. I used levels to adjust the highlights a little.

The contortions they can do to preen is impressive!

... or maybe he has a sore "armpit". He definitely looks grumpy!

Preening is one of the vital bird behaviours that determine the hygiene and health of the avians. Every bird has to perform this on a daily basis. The frequency and time depends on the species, habits, habitats, food and size of birds.

This juvenile red-tailed hawk looked so silly as he/she worked so hard at preening that it hardly noticed me photographing it. With a downy top knot, and feathers unfurled, he was caught in the business of keeping those feathers fit.
