Birds preen. Often, I wait long times so I can photograph them when they're not preening. Somehow, it's different to watch an ostrich preen.
I spent quite a lot of time watching the pair of mute swans on our lake fully submerging themselves in the water, surfacing and then splashing water over themselves. It made a change from photographing the small birds.
After watching this little Bluebird bathe in a mud puddle, he flew up to a branch and preened for several minutes.
American Coots dive among the cattails and sedges of marshes in search of food. This coot is preening its feathers after a long morning swim.

i cant tell if there is some moulting / growth in white feather area , or if it is just wet and being preened feathers
Wedge is minimally apparent
Due to moulting &/ or feather arrangement the diagnostic
"wedge in white" of wing is not always apparent ...as is the case in example below
Our PIGU has greyish underwings whereas the Black Guillemot which is also found up North in Alaska has white underwings
SO...unless one can photo doc white underwings ....pretty much forget it...

It was overcast, a bit rainy and relatively cool in San Diego today, and the light at the zoo was soft and wonderful. Some of my favorite creatures to photograph at the zoo are the macaws, and they didn't disappoint today. In the immortal words of Monty Python "Beautiful plumage."
Other pictures I have taken at our world famous zoo can be seen in my creatively named San Diego Zoo album.

These little Herons are one of the most photogenic wading birds in the wetlands. They are also great posers and this one was no exception.
It took time to do some touch up work on its feathers along Peterson Lake.

Every time I think I'm going to sell my 100-400mm lens (my least favorite lens), I take it out for "one last shoot" and I get a shot that I love. Then I decide to keep it. I should just use it more often.
