Preening helps waterbirds keep their feathers waterproofed.

I realize owls have to preen like any other bird. But when I'm trying to take some elegant photo of him? And I get a stiff neck just looking at this photo.

This guy was sitting on a building in Huntsville State Park. Vultures usually spend early morning preening and waiting for the temperature to heat up and provide a little lift to their soaring efforts.

A drake shoveler preens and shows me some of those colorful secondarys and coverlets. This is an angle I've been wanting for a while now.

Some shots taken around Greenwich.

Some geese busy preening on the Greenwich shore.

This Juvenile Domestic Goose had chosen to ignore its parents which were further along the Esk Riverbank at Whitby - there was a whole lot of honking going on, but the youngster was too busy completing its ablutions!

I had a nice opportunity to shoot the resident Cooper's Hawk juvie, as he preened after a night of rain.

I spotted a pair of Taiwan blue magpie (Urocissa caerulea) taking a bath in a small muddy pond in Yangmingshan National Park. The light was difficult, but after taking dozens of shots, I managed to edit out a few okay ones.

They look so graceful and majestic in the water but this shot shows that on land they look quite gangly with big webbed feet that look out of place.

 

Beautiful animals though.

Puffin preening at Hermaness, Yell

Watched this bird for over an hour, on and off. It sat here preening for about 40 minutes alone. The black marks on its chest are where it has burrowed into the feathers, exposing what is underneath the red chest colours. After a fluff up, the marks disappeared.
