Long-billed Curlew

My Green Cheek preening my Crimson Bellied Conure.

Wakodahatchee Wetlands was one of the coolest places I have ever visited. Tons of birds that don't care that you are there.

This bonded pair of scarlet macaws were preening in a symmetrical fashion. At the Cana Blanca Resort, Costa Rica.

I live and hike in an area where turkey vultures (Cathartes aura) are totally ubiquitous, and you see at least a dozen every day. But it took over a decade of hiking to finally see a turkey vulture stop, land, and preen itself. He put on quite a show, and it was actually great to see his feather structure on his wings...they might not be pretty, but they're mighty impressive in the air.

Every time he'd straighten out a feather or two he'd look back up, with that beady-eyed stare that says, "Oh, yeah...chicks dig me."

It seems that often, when I go into my garden, I am almost tripping over blackbirds. Twice, in the last week, two females and a youngster have flown out from under bushes.

One male is a regular visitor, and sometimes uses the bird bath while I stand and watch. This morning, I saw him preening on a wall.

This bird was preening only steps in front of the camera. In fact, it even walked right up to me to inspect the camera I was using. Once it realized that I had a Rolleicord V and Bronica ETRs it decided to give a couple of very nice poses for me to capture. This just happened to be one of them.

This fella (or perhaps it's a female) put on quite a show for me yesterday on the R.C.Y.C. Island ... I was sitting on the grass just a mere 5 ft away ... it didn't mind me there ... and it cooperated by preening and parading back and forth ... there didn't seem to be a mate about at the time ... nor any cygnets. I'll have to return to investigate. Apparently a nest close by has been spotted.

A Black-browed Albatross preening at West Point Island, Falkland Islands/las MalvinasThis image was taken during my 2014/2015 Antarctic season working with Quark Expeditions from 7th November 2014 to 21st January 2015.

This is from last weekend when those ducks came right up to me. This one felt comfortable enough to freshen up right at my feet. I literally just pointed the camera down and started snapping. My feet are probably about 18" from him. So pretty! Or should I say, handsome. I forgot..........its a guy thing to not be called "pretty"...lol.

Short walk out with the family on this lovely day around our local lake, and you just can't leave without the obligatory swan shot!

Such careful attention to grooming...

Bolsa Chica Wetlands. As usual, there were terns everywhere, and this one landed nearby on the bridge and started preening. I got a number of good pictures of it, but this is my favorite.

Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias). Okatie, South Carolina

Have a Great Feathery Friday! The theme this week is preening.

These ducks were enjoying the high water and rain to get in a little group preening competition. Often when one duck begins preening others will follow suit. This was an unusually enthusiastic group all tidying up after a good swim.

A large flock of approximately 100 American Robins, infrequent visitors to San Diego County, are currently enjoying a peppertree along Vista's Conservancy Walking Trail - this Robin had been bathing in the creek below, and flew upward to this perch to carefully preen.

Portrait of a black swan preening in the first rays of spring.

Honey preening in the dust bath. Her oil gland is back in that area, so she was likely getting some oil to distribute.

Went back the next day with my 400mm, saw this green heron fly into this tree but it only preened while I was there, was hoping it would fly down to the shoreline to fish. In poor light. Very slow shutter speed trying to handhold my non-stabilized 400mm so not the best detail but fun to watch. :)
