Male cinnamon teal, wigeon pair, coot. Oso Flaco Lake, Guadalupe, CA

Not exactly the greatest composition (with the concrete slab), but I liked the egret's pose. This one was sitting on the dam preening itself today as my son and I watched for a little while. It's Kinda Nice On Black

Sayornis nigricans angustirostris

(Black phoebe / Viudita de Río)

The Black phoebe lives in a variety of habitats but is always near water. It is mainly insectivorous, and waits on a perch before flying out and catching its prey in the air. The sexes are identical in color, and juveniles have brown feather tips.

Subspecies "angustirostris" is found in Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Peru. Also called "White-winged Phoebe" because it has more white in the wings than the northern subspecies.

Our friendly roadrunner

This beautiful swan came up close. Taken at Riverside Park in Chester-le-Street.

Gannet taken on my first visit to Troup Head, Aberdeenshire. The adult gannets are back and many more still to arrive and the younger ones too. This will be first of many images as i follow them through their season when i can.

This bird showing a "standard' more greyish-brown background of face/cheeks .

But I surmise abnormal colouration of iridescent head stripe is resultant of

Emergent Plumage Refraction ( that the not fully complete feathering isn't yet refracting typical green)

Everything else is consistent with AMWI - that is, there are no other apparent anomalous features which could/should indicate possible hybridization.

Also observed and photo doc.d for a while to see how/if angle of head to sunlight might change colours

Results were -- not much change

A Great Egret preening itself just for me. What a wonderful display this older Great Egret put on for me. Notice the fanned out tail feathers. Beautiful...

I wanted to capture kingfisher fledgelings but the parents had already chased them away and were getting ready for the next chicks. I was lucky to see the couple mating.

Juvenile Female Kingfisher Preening

This cockatoo, like some people I know, likes to preen.

A female Mallard cleaning and straightening here wing feathers.

A girls got to keep up her appearances, right?

Popped out for a few hours on Saturday morning before my trip to Cornwall and managed to bag this little one, I was sat on the river bank minding my own business when out of the corner of my eye I spotted this Kingfisher Preening itself, it was obscured by a large branch so I couldn't get a shot, it sat there for around 15 minutes regularly diving into the water to wash itself, I took a few shots but it was in the shadows so they didn't turn out to well, it eventually moved out onto a reasonably well lit branch for a few minutes whilst I grabbed this shot, which is a little sharper than the last one, lovely to see/witness this beautiful bird in the flesh/feathers ;)

A tiny bird preening. ID help appreciated!

Shot at Hebbal Lake, Bangalore - Part of BWS shoot.

Anna's male in the process of preening, important to keep those feathers clean and fluffy on these cold winter days and nights. Neck stretched and beak spread slightly, his profile is somewhat comic.

I was admiring the light on this Mute swan's feathers as it preened, and wondered how to capture it.

A selection of the feathers alone seemed boring, while including the head immediately made that the focal point.

In the end this shot with just the beak - to give some context - seemed to get wht I wanted with the emphasis on the delicacy and light.

Simply 'Photo - Graphic'!

Alternative title "Headless coots"!

Seen at Ightham Mote - no matter how long I waited I couldn't catch the coots looking up.

The Bushy herons are always good value and it's very easy to take far too many shots of them. But I couldn't resist this moment.

Photographers love Roseate spoonbills. These birds always get lots of attention in the wetlands. There were a few of them that day and they stood out among the white birds.

American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) showing vertical plate near the tip of the beak. During the breeding season, both males and females develop a pronounced bump on the top of their large beaks that is shed by the end of the breeding season. Migratory bird currently in residence in the Mombasa Lagoon. San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Conservation status: least concern
