Taking time out from nursing their brood both pen and cob worked their way to the centre of the lake and commenced preening. Working the feathers with the beak then fully submerging themselves, this process was repeated over and over until finally they rear up out of the water and furiously flap their wings removing the water and straightening the plumage.
I captured this image of a female mallard duck as she was preening on the river Skell during a visit to Ripon, North Yorkshire.
Thanks for taking the time to view my images. I am happy to receive any constructive feedback so as to improve my photography.
Photographed in the Northlakes Wood Stork colony and nesting area along Sagebrush Road in Hillsborough, Florida. (One of my overlooked images from a visit to this rookery.)

This is Kiwi. She was with me from hatching until she passed away from a very unexpected heart attack at 10 years of age (she was expected to live well into her thirties).
When you are "owned" by a parrot, you understand a weird intimacy between flesh and feather. It's funny that humans build so many barriers in touching each other -- at least in such a simple way. Ultimately, it's a beautiful, unconditional love, based perhaps on a bird's desire to be more grounded and our desire to spread our wings and fly. It is the perfect expression of unconditional love, something that every heart desires, right?
If only humans could love so simply and plainly, feet on the ground and with hearts soaring in the sky.
This Ruddy Turnstone was doing some routine preening along the beach. Photographed along the St. Augustine Beach, Florida.

The colors of the Purple Gallinule are truly remarkable. I never pass up a chance to photograph these birds no matter how many pictures of them I have in my archives.

I can't resist adding more of this series… the eagle is on my way to work and I sat there watching him get fixed to start the day. Fun…more shots in my photostream
