It's interesting to watch birds preen. Here a hooded merganser drake is grooming his feathers, oiling them up a little for waterproofing and providing care. They use their beak and feet like most birds to perform this activity.

You could get quite close the pelicans in Aruba they did not appear to be very skittish when they were near people which helped a lot when taking photographs.

The black swan had stopped for a few minutes to preen giving us a chance to enjoy and capture a few images before he sailed off !! They truly are a work of art to see with their elegant lines and beautiful coloring.

Peregrines are fast, powerful and acrobatic, but that can't be taken for granted, it takes a lot of maintenance to keep fit and glamorous. After the rain, a lot of time is spent preening feather by feather.
