I was hoping for more exotic wildlife, but happy to find something. Western Gull, Mendocino Headlands State Park, California

Ruby-throated Hummingbird perched in the garden preening.

She stayed in our tree for 15 minutes or so, changing branches from time to time. Black-chinned or ruby-throated, not sure which

The common ostrich (Struthio camelus), or simply ostrich, is a species of large flightless bird native to Africa.

The common ostrich's diet consists mainly of plant matter, though it also eats invertebrates. It lives in nomadic groups of 5 to 50 birds. When threatened, the ostrich will either hide itself by lying flat against the ground, or run away. If cornered, it can attack with a kick of its powerful legs. Mating patterns differ by geographical region, but territorial males fight for a harem of two to seven females.

The common ostrich is farmed around the world, particularly for its feathers, which are decorative and are also used as feather dusters. Its skin is used for leather products and its meat is marketed commercially, with its leanness a common marketing point.

This very handsome male Ostrich was busy preening itself early in the morning. during a game drive in Nairobi National Park, Kenya.

I love to shoot birds with reflections in still water. The glassy smooth surface of the pond reflects not only the bird, but the beautiful blue sky as well. Here an American Avocet preens in early morning light.

A normally shy and wary duck, there aren't too many of these on the shores of Neagh. So it was exciting to have this opportunirty to photograph a pair as they went about their daily life in front of me.

out of my series ANIMALS

I loved watching this process as the Prothonotary Warbler landed quite close by ... such a bright spot in the swampy bogs of the woods.

There's an area in the city of Fort Pierce named the Peacock Arts District, thanks to a travel agent by the name of Jackson "Jack" Crain who came to the area in the 70s. He brought his love of peacocks (and a few peacocks) to the area and they have been thriving ever since, freely roaming Orange Avenue, prompting the City to post "Peacock Crossing Signs". It's one of my favorite places to visit when in the area.

On this particular day, when I took this photo, the sun was glaring, and it was brutally hot, so I only took a few shots. I had the exposure on auto but adjusting for the dark, dark shadows and hot bright glare really worked my poor little camera. In fact, after a couple of minutes the camera itself was getting very hot!

Besides the peacocks, there are also many Ibis and quite a few roosters strutting about the yard, and they all seem to abide each other peacefully!

Basically, all I did for this slide was correct the exposure a bit and added color to the glaring white of the wall behind the peacock ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Happy Slider Sunday!

Adult Swan preening feathers and getting in a flap.

no.... there's no photo manipulation here. These lovebirds seemed to be a perfect match.

We had lots of sun showers today, and lots of rainbow lorikeets too, all displaying beautifully while preening their ruffled feathers.

A grey heron having some "me time" while keeping watch on the outskirts of the colony.

A juvenille Moorhen getting to grips with feather maintenance.

A gorgeous evening around the Hastings Marina. Lots of strollers, fishermen/fisherwomen and birds. Pelicans have always been a delight for me to observe, with their large beaks and ungainly bodies. Whether on the ground, perching or in flight, they're a joy to watch.

Spent some time with these geese yesterday while waiting for an appointment - they were quietly enjoying their spot in the sunshine until a dozen landscapers showed up to blow away the leaves. The building in the back is Papa John's Pizza headquarters - it is a beautiful spot of land.

I've been going through old photos taken in Tanzania & Kenya in 2014. I had just bought my first DSLR camera prior to this trip and only had two kit lenses with me (max 250 mm range). My interest in birds was also just beginning but I took many shots that I initially thought were not worthy that are now being appreciated & restored. Some are not great images but I am having fun ID-ing the fascinating birds and learning more about them!

Being this handsome takes work.....

A pretty female wood duck stayed on the log for several minutes this morning, preening and seemingly enjoying the morning sun.

Beautiful and elegant birds mute swans can provide excellent subjects for the camera. This female preening gave me a nice portrait shot.

A first 2022 trip to my local Farmoor Reservoir, Oxfordshire on the 14th January. The weather was sunny. The hope was to get some more images of the Great Northern Diver that had taken up residence.

I found the Great Northern Diver quite quickly, However it was at times distant and it was very mobile. It would easily cover 40 to 50 meters under water when Diving. It was also being moved about by a paddle boarder that was exercising on the water. At times it was difficult to keep up with it as it worked its way around the edge of F1 Reservoir.

The Great Northern Diver stops for a preening session.
