It wasn't just my qualitry time.

As we still had lovely weather yesterday, I went to the zoo. I only stayed there for about two hours but enjoyed the visit and managed to take some photo. The pelicans live at a pond there but I rarely see them swimming. Usually they are either sleeping or preening. :)

Four pairs of mallards were out again, but much more spread out than before. The first of the winter ducks, two ring necked, were there also, but not for long. Siskiyou County, California

American Avocets are elegant birds even while preening. This individual was at a wetland within Calgary city limits in the province of Alberta, Canada.

A stunning bird. Oh to have a pair of these on the garden pond.

Outing with the Stafford Bird Group. Martin Mere Lancashire 2nd February 2025

These little beauties spend a lot of time preening. Keeping every feather in place. I feel fortunate that they have no fear of me and will perch 3 or 4 meters away and preen. Thanks for viewing and have a great day!

A beautiful Blue Tit giving himself a thoroughly good wash and brush up .. they do this as they go in and out of the nest so it does not get full off insects and the babies stay healthy.

The common ostrich (Struthio camelus), or simply ostrich, is a species of large flightless bird native to Africa.

The common ostrich's diet consists mainly of plant matter, though it also eats invertebrates. It lives in nomadic groups of 5 to 50 birds. When threatened, the ostrich will either hide itself by lying flat against the ground, or run away. If cornered, it can attack with a kick of its powerful legs. Mating patterns differ by geographical region, but territorial males fight for a harem of two to seven females.

The common ostrich is farmed around the world, particularly for its feathers, which are decorative and are also used as feather dusters. Its skin is used for leather products and its meat is marketed commercially, with its leanness a common marketing point.

This very handsome male Ostrich was busy preening itself early in the morning. during a game drive in Nairobi National Park, Kenya.

I love to shoot birds with reflections in still water. The glassy smooth surface of the pond reflects not only the bird, but the beautiful blue sky as well. Here an American Avocet preens in early morning light.
