This snowy branch though pretty wouldn't be as nice without the Dove! I took this photo through my kitchen window!
I have seen this bird (or a lookalike) many times before preening in the morning sun, but the resulting photos always had a hidden head or a very awkward and (to me at least) unappealing position. So I was very glad to finally get a number of preening photos that I like, of which this is one. Green Heron, Siskiyou County, California

Gannet preening itself at RSPB, Troup Head, Aberdeenshire. This colony has exploded n numbers this year and has stretched a fair bit along the cliffs on the Aberdeenshire coast .
Well this is usually one of my favorite times of year to post on flickr....right after photofest, with 50 gigs of photos to choose from and lessons learned from friends new and old. Alas, twas not the case this year, as I ended up spending almost the entire time in a hospital bed with the fine folks at Florida Hospital in Flagler Beach. 2016 has thus far been quite unkind, here's to a better second half. This shot is one of the few I took Wednesday morning before getting ill.

Shorebirds are beginning to feed in the drying mudflats of the marsh. Small numbers now, but hoping they will increase as the mudflats continue to grow.
This Yellowlegs takes a minute to preen in the morning sun before continuing to scour the marsh edge for insects and other food.

Mountain Bluebirds at Roman Nose State Park, Watonga, Oklahoma. This Mountain Bluebird just came from a mud puddle, and flew into a tree I was close to and started preening. Does a mud puddle qualify for a bath?
This puffin plopped itself down not far from me and preened for a short time. Wish it stayed longer so I could get some different looks.

I wasn't able to identify this hawk without help. Even looking online and in books I wasn't certain. Juvenile Cooper's, Broad-winged, Short-tailed and Red-shouldered look similar to me. With Cooper's, if they are sitting straight, you can see their thinner profile and longer tail with thicker stripes than the others. But in this pose it was difficult for me to make a final decision. Thanks to Marina and her friend for letting me know what it is, a juvenile Cooper's Hawk. Non-photographers sometimes ask me how this high key (white background) is achieved so I thought I'd comment on that. When the background, the sky in this case, is much brighter that the subject, normal exposure on the subject will overexpose the background, rendering it much brighter and in extreme cases, white. Imagine seeing someone coming down a hallway with a bright light behind them. They'd be silhouetted, right? Same deal. If I had just exposed for the whole scene, or on the sky, the sky would look good but the hawk would be very dark and without detail. Taken at Green Cay November of last year. (Accipiter cooperii)
This adult Bald Eagle engaged in some preening in the early morning at Drumbeg Provincial Park on Gabriola Island. That is one of numerous smaller islands that ‘belong’ to Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.
Not usually very successful at getting these little Honeyeaters.

Out in the middle of the Heron Pond in Bushy Park I saw this " shape " , only when peeping through the telephoto could I make out what was going on - a sychronised spruce up !! These two Canadian Geese were making a proper job of it too !!

It's amazing how these Canada Geese are able to reach so many different sized feathers that are tucked way inside.Their necks are able to twist and stretch to those hard to reach places.

This Mew Gull in breeding plumage (the red eye ring) gives its feathers some careful attention.

This is an archive photo that I ran across while looking for another photo. Looking at it I was taken right back to the time and place when I made the image talk about photographic memory. What made me take the time to process this is not so much the scene but the camera that I used. This photo was made with a Nikon D5200 and Nikkor 80-400mm. The sensor in this camera runs circles around my D500 when it comes to low light and that's why I chose to share this photo. It's not always about having the most expensive equipment it's about owning the best equipment that you can afford at the time you are shopping.
