Generally, in Bhutan, prayer flags are hoisted for happiness, long life, prosperity, luck and merit and to offer karmic merit to all sentient beings. After one dies, the benefits of offering prayer flags is believed to guide the soul of the dead away from the netherworld and to prevent it from being reborn in the three lower realms (Nge Song Sum, animals, pret and life in hell) of the six life cycles: Lha (god), Lha Min (demi-god), humans, animals, pret, and life in hell, according to a Buddhist scholar, Dasho Lam Sanga.

Prayer flags such as these are a common sight in the northern state of Sikkim in India. The styles of flags change as you go northwards and eastwards to more dominant Buddhist states and countries. The prayers are written for souls and for the well being of others.

About 18m tall, this massive sandstone cross, a gift of the Church of England, was erected in 1894 to commemorate the English language sermon and use of the Book of Common Prayer in California. Perched on top of Rainbow Falls, it used to dominate Golden Gate Park. Lately however, it has been obscured by trees. The cross is not well known, possibly because it would likely lead to a lawsuit on the city for the separation of church and state, as had happened to the more famous a Mt. Davidson Cross.
