The cure rate for most childhood brain tumors is significantly lower than that for many other types of cancer, and the public remains unaware of the magnitude of this disease.
Currently, childhood glioma research is grossly underfunded. The glioma family of tumors account for almost 45% of all tumors. They are the second highest cause of cancer deaths among young people. 85-95% of children who are diagnosed with a malignant glioma die within five years. Over 97% of children with the worst of gliomas, diffuse pontine gliomas, die within two years.
This news is devastating to families who are newly diagnosed. In today's world no child should have to suffer from such a horrible disease. No family should have to endure the pain of standing by helplessly as they watch their beautiful, innocent child slowly die from an illness that takes away everything they love in life. Prayers from Maria was built out of love and compassion for these children and their families and the dire need for research.
Prayers from Maria is dedicated to funding global research into the causes, prevention, treatments, and cure for the deadliest childhood brain tumors known as gliomas; raising public awareness about gliomas and bringing hope to children and their families who deal with the hardships of this disease.
We care about where our funding goes. With very little funds available for research, it matters where each of our grants is awarded. It is of the utmost importance that our funding support the most promising research being conducted on gliomas -- wherever that may be. The foundation’s Medical Board consists of top doctors and researchers in the world for gliomas. Funding is awarded based on their professional expertise, experience, and evaluation of grant applications received.
Thanks to the generous support of so many, Prayers from Maria has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants to research of these deadly tumors in children.
Buddhist monks believe that the prayer wheel practice is an extremely quick, simple and profound method for developing compassion and wisdom. It is suggested that one recite the six-syllable mantra – Om Mani Padme Hum – while turning the prayer wheel.
After the The Dineh Tah Navajo Dancers danced, they invited visitors to lift their prayers in the smoke.

One can see prayer flags all around the country encrypted with scared Buddhist prayers. It is a Bhutanese tradition to erect prayer flags and is accepted belief that this process will purify oneself, wash away the sins and bring lots of good luck.

I carved the Lord's Prayer in this oak faced pallet which I found washed up on a beach in Ibiza, Spain. It took me a week, a line a day roughly, using just a stanley knife to carve the lettering. It was a joy to do it. I started it on the beach and then moved up into a forest overlooking a beautiful bay. A very tranquil week's work!

Taken in Xiahe, Gansu, China. These Tibetan prayer wheels lie along the 3km pilgrim circuit and there are over 1,200 of them!
Xiahe is a county in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu, People's Republic of China. It is home to the famous Labrang Monastery, one of the largest Tibetan Buddhist monasteries outside of the Tibet Autonomous Region. The town is populated largely by ethnic Tibetans, and is situated at an altitude of 3,000m.

No cameras allowed inside, though photographing the prayer circle is okay. It is meant for meditation & reflection, not photo-ops.
Stones assembled near the start of the wall, resembling faces, eyes - a haunting image. Soon as I saw them a chill passed over me. Very powerful.
The wall is a tribute to Tom Hendrix's great-great-grandmother, a Yuchi who was born in what is now NW Alabama. She was removed int what became known as the Trail of Tears, but eventually walked back all the way from the Oklahoma territories. His wall was built one stone at a time, just as her journey was made one step at a time. And just like her journey, it winds, has high spots & low spots.
He has rocks from 127 States, countries & islands, including stones from the Arctic & Antarctic, the top of Everest, & the bottom of the ocean. I'm planning to send him some mahogany obsidian from Northeast California, maybe several others from my collection.
It has received recognition as a significant piece of environmental art. The wife of Alabama's Governor Bob Riley wanted to turn it into a tourist destination, but Mr Hendrix refused. That's not what the wall is about.

One can see many walking around with these attributes around mosques. Taxi drivers hang their praying beads around the mirror, others tend to fiddle the beads with their fingers. In Catholic tradition the rosary has the same meaning, used to count the amount of prayers. Strange how seemingly distant traditions seem to entangle themselves into a common ritual. As if a sophia perennis exists, connecting the many roads leading to the Great Mystery.
Stitched for a friend going through chemo, when words just didn't seem enough.
