Dr. Michael Bröning has presented his book and moderated the discussion, The Politics of Change in Palestine: State-Building and Non-Violent Resistance.
“The Politics of Change in Palestine” discusses these changes. The book contradicts the prevalent myth that incompetent, corrupt, and uncompromising Palestinian decision-makers are responsible for the lasting stalemate in the Middle-East Peace Process. The book highlights recent political developments in Palestine that fundamentally redefine important parameters of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. These include the re-invention of Hamas, reforms within the Fatah movement, state-building efforts of the Palestinian Authority and the surge of non-violent resistance.

310 Claydon Way is located in one of the finer neighborhoods of Sacramento. Having the advantage of being almost riverside, access to the American River Parkway and bicycle path is just one block from the home, providing lovely walks through incredible natural scenery and wildlife.
Year round, this beautiful neighborhood known as Wilhaggin, shows off its aesthetic pride with floral blossoms and blooms. Unlike other fine neighborhoods in the Sacramento area, Wilhaggin is mostly composed of sprawling single story dwellings. with wide streets, sidewalks and street lights.
The "ambiance" of this kind of neighborhood intention is palpable -- quietude, modest elegance, comfortable curb appeal, an abundance of mature and establish landscaping and shade trees.
Back when these houses were made in the sixties -- before magazine living lifestyle took over and replaced practicality with the discomforts of looking sharp -- strong bones and durability were time-honored architectural concepts. Pleasing oneself was more important than pleasing the neighbors, so the focus of the aesthetic addressed things like "hot summers", "colder winters" and the need for shade and light.
There were many independent builders at that time who became famous for their designs and also for their creative concepts for creating ideal settings for a river-living climate.
Among those that rose to fame, Lewis & Bristow are known for their comfortable living designs that centered around poolside appreciation. Shaped like a "U", 310 Claydon Way has three giant sliders that open up onto a giant back yard patio. The patio has roll-down awnings for late afternoon sun shade but also lends itself to an outside office or enclosed dinner-time eating.

Ethiopian Orthodox Christmas Celebration at the Church of the Nativity, West Bank town of Bethlehem January 6, 2011. Ethiopia (and especially the Ethiopian Orthodox Church) still use the old Julian calendar, so the celebrate Christmas on January 7th. The Christmas celebration in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church is called Ganna. Most people go to Church on Christmas day.

There is no graceful way to climb up and into a Jeep Wrangler. The angles are awkward, the height is high and the interior is anything but plush and comfortable. This, I realized, as I hiked myself up and behind the vehicle’s steering wheel around five o'clock on a Friday afternoon, incidentally dressed in a rather restricting skirt.
My first thought: This is not my type of vehicle. Yes, I look for function and practicality in a vehicle – and the Wrangler Sahara embodies both of these traits; but what it lacked, in my opinion, was the necessary ease associated with handling daily errands and long weekend drives. Wrangler’s rugged capabilities weren’t priority on my checklist of car
must-haves.
And then, on my long weekend drive to Bay City, Michigan, rain began to patter against the Wrangler’s windshield as I was cruising the expressway at 70 mph. After a few minutes, it fell harder, then harder yet, until the wipers were whipping to and fro at max speed. The windshield, which moments earlier seemed irritatingly close to my face and extremely vertical, was now a godsend, offering a close and clear view of lane markers, despite inclement weather.
The height of the muscular truck, which had before seemed cumbersome and distinctly guy-oriented, was now an attribute that I was thankful for – perched high enough above neighboring drivers to see what lay before me on the expressway.
As I drove, I counted the redeeming qualities of the Red Rock painted Wrangler Sahara, nipping my initial perceptions of the vehicle in the bud, one by one.
It was maneuverable, offering the height and function of a truck, without the dragging weight of a bed in back. It was roomy, offering four doors, five seats and plenty of cargo space with a clean interior too - no nonsense gadgets or unnecessary frills. It was safe, offering multi-stage front air bags, optional seat-mounted side air bags, Brake Assist, Electronic Stability, Electronic Roll Mitigation, ABS and side-impact door beams.
And one characteristic that nobody can deny – the new Wrangler carries on the classic sport attitude traditionally associated with Jeep. In it, one can’t help allowing a bit of the fun-loving, off-road attitude of Wrangler to rub off on them - especially if it's warm enough to ride minus the Freedom Top (Jeep's 3-piece modular hard top).
I had conformed. I may not be heading off to the next Camp Jeep or slapping on a “If you can read this, flip me over” bumper sticker, but I had grown a soft spot for the Wrangler Sahara that made my would-have-been taunting drive one of ease.
Switching on the high beams and considering the stability of the slightly frozen farm ground surrounding us, I turned to my passenger, who raised an eyebrow to my mischievous grin.
“Interested in a little off-roading?” I asked.
New Renault Clio Estate shares the same dynamic breeding as the hatchback but has its own distinct identity. This model has the aesthetic design cues of shooting brakes but also dials in practicality and versatility for good measure.

In September 1977 Mercedes-Benz introduced their first factory-built wagon model as part of the W123 range.
The T-Series was available with the same engine range as the saloon, but featured the extra practicality of the wagon body form, frequently supplemented by the fitment of a 3rd row of rearward facing seats.
The model shown here the 300 TD Wagon, was fitted with a 3.0 L 5-cylinder Diesel engine, and is based on the car owned by the parent of one of my friends in the 1980s. They had a large family, and the 7-seat wagon was a very sensible proposition for carrying some of the family in one go (eight kids, so there was a second car as well).
Power output of the diesel engine was limited, based on numbers alone the car seems woefully under-powered by today's standards. But having driven a similar W123 sedan 300 D, the car moved along well enough.
The W123 reange was replaced by the W124 in 1985, and the new model range also included a high-capable wagon model.
Landings
Our usual inventory includes landing type pieces reclaimed from projects throughout New England. They typically fall into three categories:
1) Originals – originally quarried as such
2) Hand split from reclaimed block material
3) Sawn and thermaled – fabricated from large pier and bridge abutment blocks
Appearance:
Whether they are custom hand split or sawn and thermaled, our goal is to maintain the nice aged and weathered sides of the landing. We call this our “Best of Both Worlds” look blending century old patina with the practicality of a true, consistent, all season tread surface. Sometimes we can offer an aged weathered top with a sawn underside and all other surfaces untouched for that all natural look.
Size:
When a step or tread exceeds a depth of 20” or greater, we refer to these pieces as a step/landing or just a landing when they exceed 24” in depth. The most common depth of these slabs is generally between 3’-4’ with a thickness or rise in the 7”-8” range.
Use:
As the broad piece at either the door entry or at the bottom of a step/stairway to land safely and step off easily in different directions

This might just be my favourite curvy yet. I'd been wondering when we would get a red haired curvy, and now I've got one I'm not disappointed.
Her head (as well as the peach haired girl's) is soft so no glue seepage - this is the one thing Fashionistas have been consistently getting right, and it's incredibly reassuring. Her hair is great but it feels rooted rather oddly, and her hat, while nice, insists on falling off every five seconds. Don't get me wrong though, it's a great hat and really complements the outfit.
I've been struggling to find out what face mold she has. If I had to guess I would say it might be the curvy/modified Karl mold. My biggest concern with this doll is that her eyes are printed a bit too far upwards.
Her outfit is gorgeous, and though it is a 'dress' rather than two separate pieces, I see no reason why you couldn't separate the pieces. I especially love the leopard print skirt and the use of orange and teal. Usually leopard print looks tacky but changing the colour scheme really changes the look for the better. The whole thing feels very complete.
She has flat feet and her shoes have this interesting cut-out effect. Definitely more for fashion than practicality.
Overall I love this doll, but she'd be perfect if her eyes weren't printed so high up. Word of advice: if there are multiple ones of her in store, look for the one with the best face.

It wasn't too long ago that minivans reigned supreme as the go-to choice of growing families across the country. In recent years, however, minivan sales have declined due to the arrival of seven-passenger crossover SUVs, which allow moms and dads to look and feel a little more stylish while transporting their broods. These crossovers don't offer as much utility, however. So what if an automaker attempted to marry the "cool factor" of a crossover SUV and the unbeatable practicality of a minivan's shoebox-like shape? The result would probably end up something like the 2009 Ford Flex.
With styling inspired by vintage vacuum cleaners and an overall shape that resembles a super-sized cross between a first-generation Scion xB and a Mini Cooper Clubman, it's safe to say there's nothing else quite like the Ford Flex on the road today. Though the Flex shares its underpinnings and powertrain with the capable but anonymously styled Taurus X, its daring design sets it apart from the legions of look-alike crossovers roaming our roads. Fortunately for Ford, the Flex's appeal is much more than skin-deep. For example, it offers one of the highest-quality interiors we've seen from Ford in a long time, replete with plentiful soft-touch surfaces and an expensive-looking design. Ford's innovative Sync MP3 player and phone interface system is also available, as is a Vista sunroof, which consists of four fixed glass panels that brighten up the cabin for second- and third-row occupants. Add a reasonably powerful 3.5-liter V6 to the mix, along with available all-wheel drive, and you've got all the ingredients of a crowd-pleasing people mover.
Featuring conventional rear doors instead of the maximally convenient sliding variety, the Flex nonetheless constitutes a compelling package for families who just can't stomach the idea of rolling in a blatantly utilitarian conveyance. Seven adults can fit comfortably inside its elongated cabin, and access to the third row is a cinch with the optional power-folding second-row seats, though a bit of a pain without them. The second-row seats also slide fore and aft, while an optional refrigerator inside the rear console keeps perishables cool while driving. With the rear seats flipped down and the second row flipped forward, the Flex offers a large cargo area, though minivans are still considerably more capacious.
It's hard to predict whether the new Ford Flex will be a success, but Ford deserves credit for boldly bringing such an unconventional yet well-thought-out offering into the marketplace. In theory, the Flex should appeal to any family looking for a winning combination of panache and practicality. We suggest that consumers looking at either a minivan or a large crossover SUV give it strong consideration.

I build as if its a real thing. I build/design with function, wear and tear and operability in mind. I have a fairly comprehensive knowledge of firearms design/history so I like to utilise this in my work (albeit I am crossing reality & practicality with fantasy & "what if" technology speculations ;) A balancing act between fantasy and reality :)... Im thinking of maybe fitting a fat bayonet to this weapon lol .. not practical at alll , but great fun looking and emotive in a "hollywood" fantasy way lol ... Maybe a torch slung underneath instead lol ;-)

Summer probably seems like a long way away for many Americans right now, with much of the country grappling with one of the worst winter storms in recent memory.
But time flies. Most of us still feel like we’re stuck in 2020… But actually, March is almost upon us, meaning there are only three-and-a-bit months until summer. When you put it like that, it seems like summer’s just around the corner. And summer usually means one thing in the watch world: rubber strap time.
Previously the domain of only the cheapest watches, rubber straps have steadily become more acceptable on high-end timepieces, especially on Rolexes. It’s not hard to see why: Rolexes are sporty watches and the practicality of a rubber strap suits their functional nature and capability. Indeed, the first glimpses of warmer weather are a siren call to many Rolex owners to get their tools out and swap their leather or metal for rubber ahead of beach season.
The flexibility (both aesthetically and literally) of a rubber strap on Rolex models like the Explorer or the Submariner is unparalleled: not only is it the perfect way to show off a bit of individuality but is inarguably the most practical strap option, especially in summer. Leather will get manky and metal can be too heavy if you want to swim with your watch, you see.
But while watch fans in countries like Australia, France or Italy have long embraced the rubber strap – even beyond summer – the rubber strap trend has been slower to take off in the United States, even for Rolexes. It’s a shame because it’s remarkably easy to change a Rolex’s strap and it makes such a big difference to the aesthetics and wearability of a watch.

The reality is that rubber straps are good all year round, not just in summer. While leather straps and metal bracelets are undoubtedly a more classic and formal option on a watch, even the most buttery-soft leather or elegant bracelet will struggle to match the sheer comfort and versatility of a quality rubber strap, regardless of whether you’re using your Rolex tool watch for its originally intended, action-packed purpose, or if you’re just toting it as a daily wearer.
Another reason why Americans should consider blessing their Rolex with a rubber strap is that it’s likely to increase their value as an investment. Earlier this year, Bob’s Watches COO Carol Altieri shared some exclusive Rolex market insights with DMARGE, which reveal that Rolexes on rubber straps regularly command premiums of even thousands of dollars above identical models on leather or metal. When you consider that rubber straps are almost always cheaper than metal or leather options, it’s a no brainer.
Jaguar Cars Ltd., better known simply as Jaguar is a British luxury car manufacturer, headquartered in Coventry, England. It has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Indian company Tata Motors Ltd. since March 2008 and is operated as part of the Jaguar Land Rover business.
Jaguar was founded as the Swallow Sidecar Company by Sir William Lyons in 1922, originally making motorcycle sidecars before switching to passenger cars. The name was changed to Jaguar after World War II due to the unfavourable connotations of the SS initials.
The Jaguar D-Type, like its predecessor the C-Type, was a factory-built race car. Although it shared the basic straight-6 XK engine design (initially 3.4L and eventually uprated to 3.8 litres in the late fifties) with the C-Type, the majority of the car was radically different. Perhaps its most ground-breaking innovation was the introduction of a monocoque chassis, which not only introduced aircraft-style engineering to competition car design, but also an aeronautical understanding of aerodynamic efficiency. The D-Type was introduced purely for competition, but after Jaguar withdrew from racing, the company offered the remaining, unfinished chassis as the roadgoing Jaguar XKSS, by making changes to the racers: adding an extra seat, another door, a full-width windshield and primitive folding top, as concessions to practicality. However, on the evening of 12 February 1957, a fire broke out at the Browns Lane plant destroying nine of the twenty five cars that had already been completed or in semi-completion. Production is thought to have included 53 customer D-Types, 18 factory team cars, and 16 XKSS versions.
The new chassis followed aircraft engineering practice, being manufactured according to monocoque principles. The central tub, within which the driver sat, was formed from sheets of aluminium alloy. To this was attached an aluminium tubing subframe carrying the bonnet, engine, front suspension, and steering assembly. The rear suspension and final drive were mounted directly onto the monocoque itself. Fuel was carried in deformable bags inside cells within the monocoque; another aircraft innovation.
The highly efficient, aerodynamic bodywork was largely the work of Malcolm Sayer, who joined Jaguar following a stint with the Bristol Aeroplane Company during World War II. Although he also worked on the C-Type, the limitations of the conventional separate-chassis did not allow full expression of his talent. For the D-Type, Sayer insisted on a minimal frontal area. To reduce its height, Haynes and former-Bentley engineer Walter Hassan developed dry sump lubrication for the XK engine. By also canting the engine over by 8° (resulting in the trademark, off-centre bonnet bulge) the reduction in area was achieved. Care was taken to reduce drag due to the underbody, resulting in an unusually high top speed; for the long Mulsanne Straight at Le Mans, a large vertical stabiliser was mounted behind the driver's head for aerodynamic stability with minimum drag. For the 1955 season, factory cars were fitted with a revised, long-nose version of the bodywork, which increased top speed even further.
Mechanically, many features were shared with the outgoing C-Type. The ground-breaking disc brakes were retained, as was the XK engine. Apart from the new lubrication system, as development progressed during the D-Type's competition life the engine was also revised. 1955 saw the introduction of larger valves, and an asymmetrical cylinder head design within which to accommodate them. The Jaguar D-Type was the second racing car to have Dunlop disk brakes. The Citroën DS, introduced a year later, was the first production car with disk brakes in Europe. The Crosley Hotshot was the first American automobile with disk brakes, in 1949.

The Veloster is Hyundai's attempt at building an affordable lightweight sporty car, sort of taking over where the Tiburon/Tuscani left off. In a way it is reminiscent of Honda's 1980s lightweight sporty coupe, the Civic CRX, which had a devoted following, and whose essence Honda itself cannot quite seem to revive (if the overweight CR-Z hybrid is of any indication).
With a low price tag, emphasis is on practicality and feature content. For 2012, Hyundai is introducing its US-market telematics system, named BlueLink, and the Veloster is the first car to get it.
A unique feature of the Veloster is that the passenger side has two real doors, while the driver side gets a more typical one large coupe door.

Landings
Our usual inventory includes landing type pieces reclaimed from projects throughout New England. They typically fall into three categories:
1) Originals – originally quarried as such
2) Hand split from reclaimed block material
3) Sawn and thermaled – fabricated from large pier and bridge abutment blocks
Appearance:
Whether they are custom hand split or sawn and thermaled, our goal is to maintain the nice aged and weathered sides of the landing. We call this our “Best of Both Worlds” look blending century old patina with the practicality of a true, consistent, all season tread surface. Sometimes we can offer an aged weathered top with a sawn underside and all other surfaces untouched for that all natural look.
Size:
When a step or tread exceeds a depth of 20” or greater, we refer to these pieces as a step/landing or just a landing when they exceed 24” in depth. The most common depth of these slabs is generally between 3’-4’ with a thickness or rise in the 7”-8” range.
Use:
As the broad piece at either the door entry or at the bottom of a step/stairway to land safely and step off easily in different directions

The Chrysler Airflite was a concept car created by the American car manufacturer Chrysler. It was first introduced at the 2003 Geneva Auto Show. The Airflite's looks are a combination of a sporty design, stylish looks, and some of the design cues from another one of Chrysler's cars, the Crossfire.
The Airflite was based on a shortened version of Chrysler's LX platform, which was used on the Chrysler 300. The Airflite is powered by a 90° V6 engine. The rest of the Airflite's engine power and torque is still unknown to the public.
The major styling approach of the Airflite that typically seen on a sporty two-door coupé model; however, it has the practicality and function of a four-door sedan.
The Airflite blends the design of the Chrysler Crossfire and Pacifica in its exterior design. Most of the looks of the Airflite (mainly the front and rear) were based on the Crossfire. The seven-spoke road wheel design is based on the Crossfire, as is the satin trimmed windshield.
The interior of the Airflite is very spacious and upscale. A dominant center spine connects the interior from the dashboard all the way to the back. The floor is stepped up behind the rear seats to create a raised cargo area.
Major styling cues from the Airflite eventually made it into the 2007 Chrysler Sebring sedan.

New Renault Clio Estate shares the same dynamic breeding as the hatchback but has its own distinct identity. This model has the aesthetic design cues of shooting brakes but also dials in practicality and versatility for good measure.

The post-war buildings in Piazza Luigi Ferrari in Rimini reflect the city's efforts to rebuild after the devastation of World War II. Like many parts of Rimini, the square was significantly damaged during the war due to bombings, which necessitated reconstruction in the late 1940s and 1950s. As a result, several buildings in and around the piazza were either repaired or newly constructed during this period, representing a mix of architectural styles that reflect the functional needs and aesthetic trends of the time.
The post-war buildings in Piazza Luigi Ferrari are characterized by simpler, more modernist designs, in contrast to the older Neoclassical and historical architecture found elsewhere in the city. These structures often feature clean lines, minimal ornamentation, and a focus on practicality, reflecting the economic and social realities of post-war Italy. While they may not have the ornate details of earlier periods, these buildings are an important part of the city's urban development, marking a new chapter in Rimini's history as it recovered and modernized in the post-war era.
The Ferretti 830 was the first yacht of the Ferretti range to have the new open view window in the master cabin that ensures a completely unique view of the sea both from the bed, facing the window, and from the bathroom, with two communicating sections. The slender contours of the flying bridge are due to the unusual positioning of the roll bar towards the bow which gives a valuable advantage creating an area of shade over the sofa during the hottest hours. The layout of the navigation bridge has also been reassessed and unites practicality and aesthetics in a pleasingly cozy way. Inside the Ferretti style is immediately obvious with rich paneling in polished cherry-wood and extremely detailed fittings. Apart from the ample master cabin there are also two guest cabins and one VIP cabin with a double bed, all with en suite bathroom and shower. The vast salon is fitted out with every comfort including a plasma TV and up to eight people can dine in absolute tranquility. The sea becomes a real limitless pleasure with the Ferretti 830.

So there is no budget for art in "Happy Birthday, Robot!" Or rather, any art would have to come from my hand or from my wallet. I still wanted to have a children's book aesthetic. Something approachable for a young audience and their parents.
Thankfully, there are some very talented illustrators selling their vector artwork on sites like Shutterstock. Now, these kinds of sites are definitely a controversial subject. The practicalities of modern publishing collide against the ethics of paying a fair wage for talent. I'm on both sides of that particular debate. I use these sites every day for one project or another, but I recognize that the quality is not always ideal and that you can't beat a custom illustration or photograph.
That controversy isn't going to get settled in one post, so let's put it aside for now.
In purely art director terms, I knew I couldn't just download Kikoo's illustrations as-is and have them be usable in Happy Birthday, Robot. For one thing, almost none of her kids are actually sitting down. Only one, the third girl from the left, is left in her original position. All the other kids are arms, legs, torsos and heads Frankensteined together to form new kids. I also made the pencils, dice and coins, but that's not a big thing.
And once all that was done, I revised details like making all the eyes are the same style, that there are new textures applied to the colors and a paper-cut shading.
The real question is how to credit the artist. For one thing, I don't know his/her real name. Even if I did, does he/she even care about being credited? :P
A Folly for Mrs Macquarie is a sculpture in the Royal Botanic Gardens with breathtaking views of Farm Cove and Sydney Harbour.
In architecture, a folly is an extravagant decorative structure designed more for artistic expression than practicality.
The Royal Botanic Gardens were developed from 1816 under the direction of Elizabeth Macquarie, the second wife of Governor Lachlan Macquarie. This work was created by Fiona Hall and installed in 2000 at the possible site of an original folly which looks across to Mrs Macquaries Point.
Constructed from wrought iron and sandstone, it depicts a raised arm and clasped dagger from Macquarie's crest, a domed roof of metal Norfolk Island Pine fronds and an underlying, a ceiling of bones representing the animals that once lived in this area, barbed wire walls and an entrance bounded by an axe and scythe.
The Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney, New South Wales, were opened to the public in 1816.
The gardens are open every day of the year, and access is free.
Situated east of the Sydney Opera House, and overlooking Farm Cove, the gardens occupy 30 hectares in area, and are bordered by: the Cahill Expressway to the south and west, Art Gallery road to the east, and Sydney Harbour to the north.
The first farm on the Australian continent, at Farm Cove, was established in 1788 by Governor Phillip. Although that farm failed, the land has been in constant cultivation since that time, as ways were found to make the relatively infertile soils more productive.

The Botanic Gardens were founded on this site by Governor Macquarie in 1816 as part of the Governor's Domain. Australia's long history of collection and study of plants began with the appointment of the first Colonial Botanist, Charles Fraser, in 1817.

Jaguar Cars Ltd., better known simply as Jaguar is a British luxury car manufacturer, headquartered in Coventry, England. It has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Indian company Tata Motors Ltd. since March 2008 and is operated as part of the Jaguar Land Rover business.
Jaguar was founded as the Swallow Sidecar Company by Sir William Lyons in 1922, originally making motorcycle sidecars before switching to passenger cars. The name was changed to Jaguar after World War II due to the unfavourable connotations of the SS initials.
The Jaguar D-Type, like its predecessor the C-Type, was a factory-built race car. Although it shared the basic straight-6 XK engine design (initially 3.4L and eventually uprated to 3.8 litres in the late fifties) with the C-Type, the majority of the car was radically different. Perhaps its most ground-breaking innovation was the introduction of a monocoque chassis, which not only introduced aircraft-style engineering to competition car design, but also an aeronautical understanding of aerodynamic efficiency. The D-Type was introduced purely for competition, but after Jaguar withdrew from racing, the company offered the remaining, unfinished chassis as the roadgoing Jaguar XKSS, by making changes to the racers: adding an extra seat, another door, a full-width windshield and primitive folding top, as concessions to practicality. However, on the evening of 12 February 1957, a fire broke out at the Browns Lane plant destroying nine of the twenty five cars that had already been completed or in semi-completion. Production is thought to have included 53 customer D-Types, 18 factory team cars, and 16 XKSS versions.
The new chassis followed aircraft engineering practice, being manufactured according to monocoque principles. The central tub, within which the driver sat, was formed from sheets of aluminium alloy. To this was attached an aluminium tubing subframe carrying the bonnet, engine, front suspension, and steering assembly. The rear suspension and final drive were mounted directly onto the monocoque itself. Fuel was carried in deformable bags inside cells within the monocoque; another aircraft innovation.
The highly efficient, aerodynamic bodywork was largely the work of Malcolm Sayer, who joined Jaguar following a stint with the Bristol Aeroplane Company during World War II. Although he also worked on the C-Type, the limitations of the conventional separate-chassis did not allow full expression of his talent. For the D-Type, Sayer insisted on a minimal frontal area. To reduce its height, Haynes and former-Bentley engineer Walter Hassan developed dry sump lubrication for the XK engine. By also canting the engine over by 8° (resulting in the trademark, off-centre bonnet bulge) the reduction in area was achieved. Care was taken to reduce drag due to the underbody, resulting in an unusually high top speed; for the long Mulsanne Straight at Le Mans, a large vertical stabiliser was mounted behind the driver's head for aerodynamic stability with minimum drag. For the 1955 season, factory cars were fitted with a revised, long-nose version of the bodywork, which increased top speed even further.
Mechanically, many features were shared with the outgoing C-Type. The ground-breaking disc brakes were retained, as was the XK engine. Apart from the new lubrication system, as development progressed during the D-Type's competition life the engine was also revised. 1955 saw the introduction of larger valves, and an asymmetrical cylinder head design within which to accommodate them. The Jaguar D-Type was the second racing car to have Dunlop disk brakes. The Citroën DS, introduced a year later, was the first production car with disk brakes in Europe. The Crosley Hotshot was the first American automobile with disk brakes, in 1949.

On January 7, 2010, just days before class was to start, the Los Angeles Times published a fascinating article on contemporary women architects, highlighting a striking building by Jeannie Gang. Earlier this year, the brand new President of Scripps College chose the Genius of Women as her inaugural theme. What serendipity! This gave us the perfect inspiration
for our artist book: the genius of women architects. After extensive
research and class discussion, a mission statement for the book evolved: Architecture, like books, is a delicate balancing act between stability and motion, interior and exterior, aesthetic values and structural practicalities. Books, like buildings, are fundamentally inhabited spaces. They are
incomplete without human interaction.
I had to give up my Audi S4 Avant, it was just costing too much money to run. I was filling up every few days. The S4 was a lot of fun & quick as hell, but at 15/23 MPG it was hurting my wallet; the MINI though is no slow poke, it's .6 slower then the stock S4; but gets 25/33 MPG.
I never owned a manual transmission car before (only rented); so I figured a 800 mile trip would break me in. (It has & I only have another 200 miles to go till the car is past it's break in period)
I don't know if I could ever own a 2 door car with no space; I always have to balance sport with practicality. My first thought when I saw this with the back seats down, was "hmm, I bet I could get 8+ cases of wine in here easily."
So far the only thing I'm missing from the Audi is the Recaro seats (which were possibly the most comfortable seats of any car I've owned) & the second cigarette lighter jack in front.
