1896-built L&YR number 1300 (later LMS 12322 and BR 52322) arrived at Ribble Steam Railway in mid-December 2009 from the ELR.

The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway (L&YR) Class 27 is a class of 0-6-0 steam locomotive designed for freight work.

They were designed by John Aspinall and 484 were built between 1889 - 1918 at Horwich works. The Class 27 was the standard goods engine of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway. Aspinall opted for the two cylinder format with a non superheated round top boiler. David Joy's configuration of valve gear was employed. By the time of Aspinall's departure from the L&YR in 1899 over 400 of these simple but powerful engines had been built. More were built under his successor Henry Hoy and George Hughes, albeit with some modifications. By 1918 the class totalled 484.

It was under Hughes that the class became the subject of early experiments in superheating. This was the process of increasing the temperature of the steam produced in the boiler so the minimum of energy was lost. After many months of trails a further 20 superheated engines were authorised to be built and the first of these superheated class 27's emerged from Horwich Works in 1909. The superheated 27's retained the boiler pressure of the originals (180 psi). This first batch had round topped boilers but in 1912 a second batch of 20 was constructed with Belpaire fireboxes.

Although the class was augmented by a further 60 engines between 1900 and 1909 with another ten added in 1917-18. The final five built reverted entirely to the original 1889 specification. It is a tribute to the soundness usefulness and simple practicality of Aspinall's design that some 300 of the class passed into the hands of the LMS and around 50 were still in British Railways service as late as the summer of 1960.

New Renault Clio Estate shares the same dynamic breeding as the hatchback but has its own distinct identity. This model has the aesthetic design cues of shooting brakes but also dials in practicality and versatility for good measure.

// Nouvelle Renault Clio Estate possède le style à part des breaks de chasse. Largement marqué par un style emprunt de dynamisme, ce modèle s'appuie également sur les notions de fonctionnalité et modularité.

Amateur (or maybe less so) girls in some great high heels. I suspect that amateur girls wear heels for fashion, at the behest of their partner, or because they love wearing them. Much cooler than paid models who are probably wearing heels because they're getting paid to do it.

The vague element of increased practicality of heels that are slightly thicker than stilettos is a mirage, but makes this style of heel possibly cooler than a stiletto. :)

The London bed frame is the ultimate blend between elegance and practicality making for a great addition to any bedroom. The wooden bed is made from Solid Scandinavian Pine and features a wider foot board in comparison to our other bed frames which subtly hides any loose items stowed under the bed whilst still providing good clearance accessible from the sides. This in combination with a solid headboard provides additional comfort and support making the London Bed one of our sturdiest, well constructed beds in the range.

The First Baptist Church is an intriguing architectural building that is wrought with Biblical symbolism. It was designed by architect George Keister in 1891 and constructed primarily of an Indiana limestone. Prior to designing the First Baptist Church, Keister was best known for his theater designs such as the Apollo Theater. His design was selected out of twelve submitted designs and is constructed in an Italian Romaneque style.

To describe the church, the initial focal point is the large central square tower. This tower has the letters FBC carved just above the doorway and a magnificent stained glass rose window just atop the entrance. Ironically when the church was first built the roof was also constructed of stained glass before its obvious lack of practicality forced it to be replaced. Continuing to work our way up the tower though, you see two dates emblazoned into the stone. The first date on the left (1745) was when the congregation was founded. The latter date to the right (1891) signifies when the current church was erected. Above the dates are two unequal mini-towers. The taller tower here on the left is said to represent the church’s leader, Jesus Christ. The smaller complementary tower on the right appears to be incomplete, although this is because it was intentionally left so. The tower was intentionally left unfinished until the second coming of Jesus. There are two additional shorter towers just to the left and right of the central tower. These are meant to symbolize the Old and New Testaments.

Getting into the history of the First Baptist it originated in 1745 and had its first church on Gold Street in Lower Manhattan. The preacher of this original church was a man by the name of John Gano. That building in which Gano provided his sermons in was unfortunately nearly destroyed by the British during the Revolutionary War and its remnants used as a stable for British troops. Upon conclusion of the war, however, George Washington returned to its site and asked John Gano to baptize him there. That event is memorialized via a series of paintings now located within the Gano Chapel. The paintings are actually replicas as the originals reside in William Jewell College in Missouri. In addition, to the Washington baptism paintings, you will find a gift from General Washington to Reverend Gano which was a sword that was re-gifted by Washington whom had originally received it from General Marquis de Lafayette.

From Edmunds (http://www.edmunds.com/ford/flex/2009/review.html) -

It wasn't too long ago that minivans reigned supreme as the go-to choice of growing families across the country. In recent years, however, minivan sales have declined due to the arrival of seven-passenger crossover SUVs, which allow moms and dads to look and feel a little more stylish while transporting their broods. These crossovers don't offer as much utility, however. So what if an automaker attempted to marry the "cool factor" of a crossover SUV and the unbeatable practicality of a minivan's shoebox-like shape? The result would probably end up something like the 2009 Ford Flex.

With styling inspired by vintage vacuum cleaners and an overall shape that resembles a super-sized cross between a first-generation Scion xB and a Mini Cooper Clubman, it's safe to say there's nothing else quite like the Ford Flex on the road today. Though the Flex shares its underpinnings and powertrain with the capable but anonymously styled Taurus X, its daring design sets it apart from the legions of look-alike crossovers roaming our roads. Fortunately for Ford, the Flex's appeal is much more than skin-deep. For example, it offers one of the highest-quality interiors we've seen from Ford in a long time, replete with plentiful soft-touch surfaces and an expensive-looking design. Ford's innovative Sync MP3 player and phone interface system is also available, as is a Vista sunroof, which consists of four fixed glass panels that brighten up the cabin for second- and third-row occupants. Add a reasonably powerful 3.5-liter V6 to the mix, along with available all-wheel drive, and you've got all the ingredients of a crowd-pleasing people mover.

Featuring conventional rear doors instead of the maximally convenient sliding variety, the Flex nonetheless constitutes a compelling package for families who just can't stomach the idea of rolling in a blatantly utilitarian conveyance. Seven adults can fit comfortably inside its elongated cabin, and access to the third row is a cinch with the optional power-folding second-row seats, though a bit of a pain without them. The second-row seats also slide fore and aft, while an optional refrigerator inside the rear console keeps perishables cool while driving. With the rear seats flipped down and the second row flipped forward, the Flex offers a large cargo area, though minivans are still considerably more capacious.

It's hard to predict whether the new Ford Flex will be a success, but Ford deserves credit for boldly bringing such an unconventional yet well-thought-out offering into the marketplace. In theory, the Flex should appeal to any family looking for a winning combination of panache and practicality. We suggest that consumers looking at either a minivan or a large crossover SUV give it strong consideration.

Pirates exhibition at the Museum of Hartlepool: reproduction 17th century pirate gunner's outfit, including knitted Monmouth cap, powder horn, rammer and sponge, boarding axe and sloop trousers. Golden Age pirates were mostly sailors who had turned to a life of crime and so wore typical seamen's clothes. They often went barefoot as that made it easier to climb rigging.

In the background is a pirate costume from the 2003 Peter Pan film. This was based on fanciful works by the 19th century illustrator Howard Pyle who in turn based his pirate clothes on Spanish folk costume. Compare this flamboyant film frippery to the practicality of the historic outfit.

Landings

Our usual inventory includes landing type pieces reclaimed from projects throughout New England. They typically fall into three categories:

1) Originals – originally quarried as such

2) Hand split from reclaimed block material

3) Sawn and thermaled – fabricated from large pier and bridge abutment blocks

Appearance:

Whether they are custom hand split or sawn and thermaled, our goal is to maintain the nice aged and weathered sides of the landing. We call this our “Best of Both Worlds” look blending century old patina with the practicality of a true, consistent, all season tread surface. Sometimes we can offer an aged weathered top with a sawn underside and all other surfaces untouched for that all natural look.

Size:

When a step or tread exceeds a depth of 20” or greater, we refer to these pieces as a step/landing or just a landing when they exceed 24” in depth. The most common depth of these slabs is generally between 3’-4’ with a thickness or rise in the 7”-8” range.

Use:

As the broad piece at either the door entry or at the bottom of a step/stairway to land safely and step off easily in different directions

Sold:

By the square foot.

Hi,

For over twenty five years I have seen how magic can add value to delivery.  There are a huge collection of secret techniques out there, many of them psychological, that engages and attracts people. The Sleight of Mind Set workshops are one day workshops all about how you can tap into this rich stream of ideas and Mind Magic's enduring popularity. The day looks at two paths running together; one learning the tricks and effects, the other learning about why and how they add value to us.

They are being held around the country, in:

Neuromagic & the Tricks of the Mind

Applied Advantage

Tapping Into Popularity

Theatre of the Mind

Examples of Psychological Artistry

NEUROMAGIC AND THE TRICKS OF THE MIND

As a psychologist and Psychological Artist, I have been fascinated by how the principles used in magic and mind magic in particular can reveal so much about our human nature and behaviour. Now, neuromagic as well as psychology is learning from Mind Magic.

Neuromagic is brand new field of neuroscience that is being used to understand how magic, affects and changes how we see the world. This in turn informs how we think and what we believe about ourselves and others.  For just one example of how magic is being used with neuroscience to study change blindness, go to mindsways.com/SMS#Neuromagic

As is often pointed out in portrayals of Sherlock Holmes; "we see but do not observe". Our cognitive biases constantly distort and filter how we think. We are always under the control of stereotyping, confirmational bias, default effects and much more, basically as magicians know; "we cannot believe what we see but we see what we believe"

The good news is that we do not need to be at the mercy of these thinking fallacies. As neuroscience shows us: we can change. Some go as far as to say that we actually have infinite plasticity, in other words, there is no limit to how much we can change ourselves or how we think.

The Sleight of Mind Set workshops use the principle that "all is not as it appears" to be able to illustrate this and how we see the world. This in turn affects how we act, think and behave, just as neuromagic shows us. The SNT kit has the tools built within it to help us change by making use of the infinite plasticity we all have and to do so with entertaining and enlightening ways. You get your own SNT kit to take away with you on the day. To see more, please go to mindsways.com/SMS/

APPLIED ADVANTAGE

A theme of the day is how you can use these ideas and techniques to add practical value to your delivery through:

Using MMI's (Multiple Moments of Interest, Interaction & Insight)

Connecting emotionally and being relevant (emotional triggers)

Being memorable (giving people something novel to talk about)

Creating attraction (and making you stand out)

Increasing your delivery vocabulary

Bridging the innovation gap

Personal Touch delivery

For more information on the themes of the day, please see mindsways.com/SMS/

TAPPING INTO THE POPULARITY

Mind Magic holds an enduring allure and popularity by bringing together entertainment, mystery and the paranormal. Magic is never far out of the popular sphere with Derren Brown currently filling theatres across the country with his 'Infamous' tour and drawing large TV audiences.

This is also shown by the new blockbuster film; Now You See Me. The film is based on the premise of what if magic were real. Starring Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Mark Ruffalo, Jesse Eisenberg and Isla Fisher, the film shows the hold that magic has over our imagination. To see more about the film, please go to mindsways.com/SMS/#NowYouSeeMe.

Our aim is to make day informative, entertaining and practical for you. People have attended for many reasons including:

Curiosity

Learning something new

Interest in how the mind works

Adding variety to enliven their presentations

New and different approaches

Adding to their business practices

An increased reputation

A channel for their passion and fascination

Wider perspectives and experiences

The real power of Mind Magic and Psychological Artistry lies not with just the tricks, but the effect that the delivery of the tricks have on people. By doing this, you are tapping into the emotions of mystery combined with the power of the Personal Touch.

On the workshops and in the SNT kit, we give you the tricks, however, learning to use them with what you do is where the real power lies. This is when the real magic happens, in the theatre of the minds. For more on this, please go to mindsways.com/SMS/

THEATRE OF THE MIND

On the workshop we uncover tricks, look at making a trick into an effect and making the effect into a piece that works for you.  The three levels we work on are:

Effect of a trick - "how did you do that?"

Analysis of a trick - "why does this trick work?  Why did the effect happen?"

Practicality of a trick - "how you can use the tricks for myself?"

This involves using a combination of Psychology, Neuroscience, Smart Thinking and the ideas, tools and techniques from Mind Magic.  For more on this, please see mindsways.com/SMS/

EXAMPLES OF PSYCHOLOGICAL ARTISTRY

A couple of interesting examples of how all is not as it appears are the McGurk effect and Prof Richard Wiseman's "The Incredible Colour Changing Card Effect". Please take a look here or visit mindsways.com/SMS#PsychologicalArtistry. I would love to know what you think. These illustrate both the power and the approach of Psychological Artistry.

WHAT DO PEOPLE SAY ABOUT THE WORKSHOP?

The feedback from the workshops have been extremely positive, with people from recent workshops saying things like:

"It really was most enjoyable and enlightening"

"The most unique training day I have ever been on"

"My target was to get 3 things to add to my training, I had 11 by lunchtime"

"Fantastic day... a great eye opener!"

"Thanks to you both for a challenging, stimulating and enjoyable day"

"I've had plenty of thoughts about how some of the approaches used might be incorporated into several areas of my work"

"Another great course, with plenty to think about and over"

The workshops have been enjoyed and shown to be beneficial to many people over the past year. The events have been attended and proved to be relevant to people from a wide range of backgrounds including entrepreneurs, business consultants, health professionals, coaches of life, performance and sports, therapists, hypnotherapists, trainers etc.

This is an unorthodox approach to understanding human behaviour, illustrating and promoting our messages, and this is where the real power lies. As Marty Neumeier says in ZAG " Be Different - NO Really Different". For more on what people say, please see mindsways.com/what-people-say/

New Renault Clio Estate shares the same dynamic breeding as the hatchback but has its own distinct identity. This model has the aesthetic design cues of shooting brakes but also dials in practicality and versatility for good measure.

Wardrop's Court, Lawnmarket with Blackie House (through pend) has been restored and converted to student residences for Edinburgh University.

Situated to the east of Lady Stair’s Court formed in the 1890’s by the demolition of two small closes ( (Wardrop's to the NW and Paterson's to the SE) by Patrick Geddes (1892) is a clever evocation of its timber framed predecessor. The carved dragon brackets at the entrance and exit of the Court were restored in 2013. Two of the dragons were carved by Geddes’ 16 year old son Arthur, guided by the sculptor Alec Miller, who was with the Guild of Handicrafts, a key part of the Arts and Crafts movement.

Sir Patrick Geddes FRSE (2 October 1854 – 17 April 1932) was a Scottish biologist, sociologist, geographer, philanthropist and pioneering town planner. He is known for his innovative thinking in the fields of urban planning and sociology. He introduced the concept of "region" to architecture and planning and coined the term "conurbation".

Very early on in his career Geddes demonstrated the practicality of his ideas and approach. In 1886 Geddes and his newly married wife purchased a row of slum tenements in James Court, Edinburgh, making it into a single dwelling. In and around this area Geddes commenced upon a project of "conservative surgery": "weeding out the worst of the houses that surrounded them…widening the narrow closes into courtyards" and thus improving sunlight and airflow. The best of the houses were kept and restored. Geddes believed that this approach was both more economical and more humane.

With its wild wings, futuristic curves, and total lack of practicality, the Ferrari Dino 206 Competizione was the quintessential concept car. A radically designed prototype, the Competizione combined typical Ferrari values of charm, charisma, and technically advanced engineering prowess.

The Dino name in the Competizione's title is in reference to Enzo Ferrari's son, Dino. When Ferrari first developed a V6 engine for the 1957 Formula 2 series, he named it Dino. After that, the name of Enzo's son was used to designate six-cylinder and lower-cost Ferraris. The 206 nomenclature used on Ferrari's 1967 prototype indicates that it was built on a 206 S chassis. The 206 S was a capable racing car, with a body that resembled that of the V12-powered 330 P3. Using 206 S chassis #10523 to underpin the Competizione gave the car racer roots that were rarely seen on concept cars. The Dino 206 Competizione distinguished itself as a concept that was not just functional, but built on a thoroughly race-proven chassis.

That proven chassis was endowed with four wheel disc brakes, front and rear independent suspension, and an advanced steel space frame design that gave high strength in a lightweight package. The total weight of the 206 Competizione was just 1,400lbs, making even its small engine more than enough to create an unquestionably fast car.

The Dino V6 used in the Competizione displaced just 2.0-liters, but was able to generate 218bhp. Peak power was reached at redline, which was 9,000rpm. The lower rotational inertial of the small V6 gave an even higher redline than the V12 mounted in the 330 P series. The V6 was constructed of aluminum and mounted amidships within the space frame of the prototype, as it was in the standard 206 S. A 5-speed transaxle directed the engine's power to the rear wheels.

Despite its racing car foundation, the Dino 206 Competizione was not created to compete. As a dedicated concept car, it was created to showcase excellent design and possible styling cues for Ferrari's future. The Competizione had an advanced appearance that flaunted the talents of a young designer named Paolo Martin. Only 23 when he designed the car, the Competizione came very early in Martin's career. He later would admit he felt 'a very strong emotion' as he watched his project unfold into a true supercar.

Paolo Martin was working under Pininfarina when he developed the Competizione's styling, so the car wears Pininfarina 'f' badges. Pininfarina was also responsible for the construction of the prototype's body. Martin's shape was free of hard edges, with abundant curves and a large glass area with a circular cross-section. Viewed from some angles, the odd shape of the car's glass lends the greenhouse a bubble-like appearance. This is particularly evident from the front, where the vast windshield sweeps up and to the sides like a bulbous take on a jetfighter's canopy.

The Competizione had exaggerated mid-engined proportions, with a short, low nose and a long, high tail. The front lighting fit the shape perfectly, with transparent, aerodynamic coverings over clusters of three lights. The light clusters were angled down towards the center of the car's nose. The lighting's covers blended seamlessly with the unusually round curve at the front of the car, and combined with front vents ahead of the large windshield to create a design that looked organic, but not earthly. From the front, the design had a cartoonish look that was exotic and alien, as if the Competizione was designed on a different planet to resemble some distant species.

Distinctive spoilers added to the effect. Though the strange spoilers didn't seem out of place on the car, they almost looked as if they were tacked on as an afterthought. This was not surprising, as Paolo Martin himself admitted that the spoilers 'were added only at the last minute, since the Management thought the design had to be enriched.' The spoilers used black wings attached to the body by metal arms that looked too much like pieces from an Erector Set to match the rest of the design.

All of the vents and air intakes found on the Dino 206 Competizione—and there were plenty—blended gracefully with the smooth curves on which they were placed. They looked like gills, and they enhanced the car's alien image. A single windshield wiper protruded like a tentacle reaching towards the windshield. Gullwing doors with a huge glass area contributed to the otherworldly effect, as did the jarring, bright yellow paint that covered the prototype's aluminum skin.

James Glickenhaus, a wealthy car collector with a special interest in Ferraris, recently became the first private owner of the Dino 206 Competizione. The car had been kept in Pininfarina's museum for over thirty years until a purchase was agreed upon in 2007 and Glickenhaus bought the stunning vehicle. Since Glickenhaus purchased the car, it has been shown with success and driven regularly.

This Lego miniland-scale Ferrari Dino 206 Competizione (s/n 10523 - Carrozzeria Pininfarina - 1967) has been created for Flickr LUGNuts' 94th Build Challenge, - "Appease the Elves Summer Automobile Build-off (Part 2)", - a design challenge combining the resources of LUGNuts, TheLegoCarBlog (TLCB) and Head Turnerz.

"DIRNDL"... Originally, the Dirndl, which is the female form of the traditional costume, was the dress worn by maids and servants. (The word "DIRN" in local Bavarian and Austrian dialects means 'maid'.) That changed in the 19th century, when the middle classes, as well as aristocrats, painters and writers, re-discovered nature and their roots. Many of them started wearing the same outfits as their servants, on their vacations, adapting Dirndls for comfort, luxury and practicality.

The Dirndl consists of a tight waistcoat or Mieder, under which a wide-sleeved blouse is worn. The top is combined with a long, full skirt over which an apron is tied. Originally the material was linen, wool in winter. But when re-discovered by the upper classes, Dirndls were fashioned from silk. The apron, waistcoat and even blouse were heavily embroidered. Today, the Dirndl is an accepted and much appreciated fashion item, worn even to formal parties, dinners and balls.

All brass & copper construction.

Rotary barrel array is powered by a 9.6 volt cordless drill motor.

Working safety catch. and custom powere connector.

Hand built from reclaimed old and vintage tools/parts, junk, scrap and repurposed odds and ends, plumbing & heating supplies. I built it using only basic hand & power tools. The most sophisticated tool I have in my little shed is a cheap vertical drill press from a local hardware chainstore :-) (Oh I do own a Dremel as well lol ;-) )

I build as if its a real thing. I build/design with function, wear and tear and operability in mind. I have a fairly comprehensive knowledge of firearms design/history so I like to utilise this in my work (albeit I am crossing reality & practicality with fantasy & "what if" technology speculations ;) A balancing act between fantasy and reality :)... Im thinking of maybe fitting a fat bayonet to this weapon lol .. not practical at alll , but great fun looking and emotive in a "hollywood" fantasy way lol ... Maybe a torch slung underneath instead lol ;-)

Unison Pastels

Internationally renowned, soft pastel makers, Unison, have their base in a little known area of Northumberland called Tarset. Put simply, I think they’re the finest pastels in the world.

Unison are tricky to find and shy about signposting their premises, but the determined should head for Bellingham then watch out for a sign to Tarset Tor – it’s a bunkhouse for walkers. From there head for Greenhaugh then use your nose and intuition. Thorneyburn Church – dedicated to St Aiden is your next landmark. The Unison ‘sheds’ huddle next to the churchyard wall. And I do mean, ‘sheds’.

The rewards for artists inside – the sheds – not the graveyard – are immense. It’s like being a kid in a sweetshop. The raw pigments sit modestly in unassuming jars on rickety shelves, their colours glowing like precious silks.

The girls blend them – with faery dust I assume – then spoon dollops out to dry a little before they are hand rolled, then trimmed ready for drying out. The whole process is finished by hand sticking labels onto them.

No romantic names like those Daniel Smith watercolours I love. Here at Unison there is less poetry and more practicality. For instance today (a belated birthday gift) I chose Y1 to Y18, which as you might expect – are 18 types of Yellow, some greens, namely 1 – 24, and one or two from their special collection, which are incredibly intense.

Among this set of images you can see one of the women putting the labels on my selection.

Outside the shed, chickens and ducks scrabble about at your feet, squirrels keep their distance in the trees, and the only sounds are birdsong and breezes. All the building sprout moss and lichen, such is the prolific rainfall out there.

As an artist I love to visit, but there is plenty to amuse photographers too.

From Road and Travel (http://www.roadandtravel.com/roadtests/firstimpressions/2007/jeep-wrangler.htm) -

There is no graceful way to climb up and into a Jeep Wrangler. The angles are awkward, the height is high and the interior is anything but plush and comfortable. This, I realized, as I hiked myself up and behind the vehicle’s steering wheel around five o'clock on a Friday afternoon, incidentally dressed in a rather restricting skirt.

My first thought: This is not my type of vehicle. Yes, I look for function and practicality in a vehicle – and the Wrangler Sahara embodies both of these traits; but what it lacked, in my opinion, was the necessary ease associated with handling daily errands and long weekend drives. Wrangler’s rugged capabilities weren’t priority on my checklist of car

must-haves.

And then, on my long weekend drive to Bay City, Michigan, rain began to patter against the Wrangler’s windshield as I was cruising the expressway at 70 mph. After a few minutes, it fell harder, then harder yet, until the wipers were whipping to and fro at max speed. The windshield, which moments earlier seemed irritatingly close to my face and extremely vertical, was now a godsend, offering a close and clear view of lane markers, despite inclement weather.

The height of the muscular truck, which had before seemed cumbersome and distinctly guy-oriented, was now an attribute that I was thankful for – perched high enough above neighboring drivers to see what lay before me on the expressway.

As I drove, I counted the redeeming qualities of the Red Rock painted Wrangler Sahara, nipping my initial perceptions of the vehicle in the bud, one by one.

It was maneuverable, offering the height and function of a truck, without the dragging weight of a bed in back. It was roomy, offering four doors, five seats and plenty of cargo space with a clean interior too - no nonsense gadgets or unnecessary frills. It was safe, offering multi-stage front air bags, optional seat-mounted side air bags, Brake Assist, Electronic Stability, Electronic Roll Mitigation, ABS and side-impact door beams.

And one characteristic that nobody can deny – the new Wrangler carries on the classic sport attitude traditionally associated with Jeep. In it, one can’t help allowing a bit of the fun-loving, off-road attitude of Wrangler to rub off on them - especially if it's warm enough to ride minus the Freedom Top (Jeep's 3-piece modular hard top).

I had conformed. I may not be heading off to the next Camp Jeep or slapping on a “If you can read this, flip me over” bumper sticker, but I had grown a soft spot for the Wrangler Sahara that made my would-have-been taunting drive one of ease.

Switching on the high beams and considering the stability of the slightly frozen farm ground surrounding us, I turned to my passenger, who raised an eyebrow to my mischievous grin.

“Interested in a little off-roading?” I asked.

The Ineos Grenadier wants to take over where the old Land Rover Defender left off.

As the new Land Rover Defender goes on sale, Ineos unveils a model that is uncannily similar to the old Defender, hoping to capture fans of the old model’s utilitarian looks and practicality.

On 16 July 2020, the much-anticipated redesigned Land Rover Defender will be officially launched for sale in South Africa. Enthusiasts can register online to be part of the virtual launch event. Initially, South Africans will have access to the larger five-door D110 model, which is already available to order, starting at R1,050,100 for the entry model. Later in the year, the smaller three-door D90 model will also be available, starting at R990,600 for its entry model.

When the new design was unveiled in 2019, opinion was somewhat divided. Although it received largely positive reviews, and in the UK scored a couple of awards like Production Car of the Year from Car Design News and WhatCar?’s Reader Award for most anticipated car of 2020, diehard fans of the old design also voiced their displeasure at the far more modern redesign. Besides the curvier exterior look, the new Defender’s interior is also a more refined affair with many features that have become standard for high-end SUVs, such as digital screens and infotainment systems.

Throughout its 67-year run, from the agriculturally-focused Land Rover Series I in 1948, the Series II in 1958, the Series III in 1971, through to getting its current moniker as the Land Rover Defender in 1990, the boxy utilitarian look of the Defender didn’t change much. The interior remained minimal, and the design couldn’t match the comforts of modern SUVs, nor meet the criteria for safety standards. In fact, the latter is the reason that as of 1998, it was pulled out of the US market. And as of 2020, it would not have met Europe’s new safety regulations either. The last of the old Defender went off the production line in January 2016.

Nostalgia aside, the reality for the car manufacturer, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), is that losing both the UK and the US market would limit their potential sales. The SUVs market has also grown significantly over the past decade. By the end of 2018, SUVs accounted for 40% of all new cars sold globally. “There are now over 200-million SUVs around the world, up from about 35-million in 2010, accounting for 60% of the increase in the global car fleet since 2010,” says one study by the International Energy Agency.

JLR is undoubtedly looking for more ways to grow their footprint in that market, and judging by the excitement at the launch of the new Defender, it is also likely to be far more appealing to segments of the SUV market that the old Defender couldn’t, such as urban consumers who are less likely to venture into off-roading. Considering its price point and more refined interiors, it is also less about a focus on strictly utilitarian use. To be clear, it is definitely more than well equipped to take on rough terrain, arguably even more so than its predecessor.

However, the arrival of another 4×4 rough and tumble model has old Defender fans excited. Enter the Ineos Grenadier, with a design that is near-identical to the old Defender. It is Ineos’ first venture into car manufacturing. The company is one of the world’s largest chemical producers, and majority-owned by English billionaire Sir James Arthur Ratcliffe, who said of the launch of the Grenadier, “The Grenadier project started by identifying a gap in the market, abandoned by a number of manufacturers, for a utilitarian off-road vehicle. This gave us our engineering blueprint for a capable, durable and reliable 4×4 built to handle the world’s harshest environments. But it had to look the part as well.”

The story goes that back in 2017, Ratcliffe, while at his favourite pub The Grenadier in London – which the car would eventually be named after – came up with the idea: “[It seemed] the last of the proper utility vehicles were about to stop. There was a character about them that we felt we were all gonna miss… Jim being Jim, he said ‘let’s do something about it’,” says the Ineos Grenadier’s Head of Design, Toby Ecuyer, an architect and first-time car designer with previous experience designing yachts.

The Grenadier will run on a three-litre, six-cylinder BMW engine, and in addition to the SUV, a double-cab bakkie model will be offered.

Speaking of the design that looks near-identical to the Defender, says Ecuyer: “We didn’t set out to make it look like anything else, it was just… it was always engineering-led. Right at the beginning, I remember saying that we’ve got to build something super practical.” He goes on to note that practical utility vehicles like the Defender and some models of the Pajero do have a specific visual identity, which The Grenadier follows through on.

While the interior and additional features have not been revealed yet, we’re able to glean from its exterior design many practical elements suited to off-roading enthusiasts: from the rear-double door, to the ladder for roof access, and the beltline along the side so that extra equipment can be hung. There are also roof bars and strips which would allow for loads to be attached without roof racks. The Grenadier will run on a three-litre, six-cylinder BMW engine, and in addition to the SUV, a double-cab bakkie model will be offered.

The car was revealed for the first time on 1 July 2020, and it is still more than a year from being available for retail, with the first expected to be sold late 2021 in Europe, then following up with Australia, the Middle East, North America and South Africa.

The timing of the reveal bears noting, especially considering Jaguar Land Rover’s current rollout of the new Defender. In its update to investors in June 2020, the Financial Times reports that JLR said it had only 22,000 pre-orders for the new Defender, which was below expectation and only slightly higher than the 19,000 units the old defender sold in its fiscal year 2015, sales which didn’t include the US market and only reflected just over a thousand from the European market.

Judging by looks and capabilities, and the talk of a more affordable price than the Defender, Grenadier seems set to satisfy die-hard Defender fans. How it will perform however remains to be seen. Ratcliffe expects to sell between 25,000 to 30,000 a year.

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Stoke Newington, North London*. Here are the details of the project

The Jungle Garden in Stoke Newington, North London N16 0SX

The plot is a mid-terrace garden that is empty apart from an established Fatsia Japonica

The client has requested an area for dining and a dedicated workshop space

Client would like scented flowers to be included in planting scheme

The plot is typical of properties in the area where space is at a premium

The garden is surrounded by a period brick wall. However, this wall has not been built at a 90° angle to the house, resulting in an odd and awkwardly shaped space. There is also a slight slope and different levels in different parts of the garden

The client has requested a low-maintenance, easy care garden

The space will be divided into three areas, allowing a myriad of practical and recreational uses

The bottom third of the space will become a workshop area (to be constructed by the client), providing practicality without compromising the aesthetic appeal of the rest of the space

The area along the side of the house is to be decked. This deck will continue out 12 feet behind the house, running the width of the garden, providing an attractive area for dining and entertaining

The walls to the back and the side of the house will be utilised as much as possible, using objet d'art, wall pots and evergreen climbers, in order to minimise the use of precious floor space

The middle area of the garden will feature raised beds constructed of old railway sleepers. This will help to give a sense of enclosure, while providing variety in the garden’s levels - particularly important in a small space. The space between the two beds will be paved with York Stone slabs, adding a rich beauty to the space. Deep benching, also constructed of railway sleepers and fixed to the side of the raised beds, will be installed on either side of the paved area. Bespoke removable cushions will give the benches comfort, elegance and practicality

The choice of plants will give the space a lush jungle feel, with dense planting in a palette of white and black flowers. This will be offset with evergreen foliage in a variety of shades of green, creating a simple yet stunning scheme with year-round appeal. As the plants mature they will, together with the existing Fatsia Japonica, also serve to mask the workshop area at the bottom of the space

The existing fences will be beautified with reed screening, helping to unify the space
