Pebbles has just returned from her second walk of the day.

Once upon a time, N&W position lights were plentiful in west central Ohio, along the Columbus-Sandusky line. This nice set is at Frank, Ohio, not far south of Bellevue.

These few pictures are from the Jiayuguan Fort area of the Jiayuguan section of the Great Wall of China. Read on for details...

 

Friday was quite pleasing for its surprises. I’m rarely in a position where I’m surprised by a situation and it happened repeatedly on Friday, which was nice. However, it was even better to get off the train in Jiayuguan – especially since it took two hours longer than scheduled to arrive. That’ll happen when the train stops randomly on the tracks to let other trains pass, but better than the alternative of locomotives playing a game of chicken. At any rate, seven hours on a five hour train ride is slightly grating on the nerves, so getting off at 11 p.m. or so, I was tired.

 

Fortunately for me, I was getting off the train with my two newly-made lesbian friends with whom I’d been playing poker. Turns out they live in or near Chengdu, too, and had another train to catch at 5:00 in the morning. So, off we wandered…looking for a taxi, a hotel, and some proper food. Lonely Planet didn’t turn out to be terribly useful for Jiayuguan (first time that’s happened for me), so my friends and I just took a taxi to the center of town, saw a hotel, and I ended up getting a room.

 

After dropping my bag and camera, we headed back downstairs and went to a late-night open-air area that has all kinds of food and grabbed a light midnight snack. (I may not have even eaten; I don’t recall.) Snack out of the way, we all returned to my room where the girls slept a few hours in their bed and left around 4:00, and I in mine.

 

Earlier in the evening, they were good enough to make a deal with our first taxi driver that his wife would be my private driver the next morning for 100 RMB and take me around to the Great Wall sites for which I’d actually come to Jiayuguan. (It’s really the only reason any tourist would come here, I think; I don’t even know of any other tourist attractions.)

 

The next morning, I checked out of the Jiayuguan No Name Hotel and grabbed Mrs. Taxi Driver and off we went to the Great Wall sites. Jiayuguan is considered by most to be the western terminal of the Great Wall. For me, it was one of the sections I had been looking to for a number of reasons.

 

The history and mythology of the wall are fascinating to me yet, as a photographer, it’s a little difficult to show variety if you’re trying to do a photo exposition of it. What I mean to say here is that…it’s a wall. It’s usually found in a mountainous region – or a mountain pass – so the landscape setting of it doesn’t tend to vary much. Since landscape variation tends to be limited when shooting the Wall, the biggest variant is…weather. I’ve never been fortunate enough to shoot the Wall in winter when I lived near it for 17 months. (In those 17 months, I saw a total of two days of snow, and both days was a dusting that melted by noon.)

 

Because of that, certain famous sections are appealing to me: Shanhaiguan (because that one comes with a seascape) and Jiayuguan (because it’s in the desert). For the first roughly three years that I lived in China, Dunhuang and the Jiayuguan section were…remote. Far enough that I didn’t plan on coming because there were plenty of unexplored places closer to see. (I’d say it’s about the equivalent of having lived in New York City or Washington, DC and having an interest in seeing a place as far as Glacier National Park in Montana…though places like Chicago, Philadelphia, and so on are closer.)

 

Time and circumstance finally brought me here, and I wanted to make sure to include seeing this section and shooting it (to give my Great Wall collection a little diversity, if nothing else). Jiayuguan has three separate areas to visit and you need some kind of transportation to see all three…which is why my friends helped me hire Mrs. Taxi Driver.

 

The three sections are: the Overhanging Great Wall (this is the reconstructed part that most would consider “the Wall,” that you can hike), First Beacon Platform (this is the authentic spot), and the Jiayuguan Fort (reconstructed).

 

Of the three, most would consider the beacon platform the least interesting, though I enjoyed it simply because it’s real (and running alongside remnants of the original wall). The views from the platform over the Taolai River are quite nice, as the beacon sits on a cliff 56 meters above the river bed. This beacon – this hill of dirt – is the “end of the wall.” In addition to the remnants here, there is a pretty nice and tastefully down museum on hand.

 

After viewing the beacon, we went to the Overhanging Great Wall. (I’m not sure why it’s called “overhanging.” It didn’t strike me as different from other sections that aren’t hanging over anything.) This section just north of town is only about 1-2 km to go up and down. Hiking up and down here took about 45 minutes or so, though it’s considered a fairly “strenuous” hike. If you have bad knees or a bad heart, I suppose it is. I’m far from healthy, though, and didn’t have too many problems.

 

Like all other sections, this is completely reconstructed and fake. It was originally built in 1539. What you see here? Built in 1987. You can, however, see a long section of the original wall running near Jiayuguan city from the peak here, along with terrific views of the desert to the north and Qilianshan Mountains to the south. I recall walking the lower part of this and tapping on the wall. It seemed so fake that it almost felt like papier mache. This section is definitely better for the views than for the wall.

 

The last of the three places on the morning run around town was the Jiayuguan Fort. Quite photogenic, it was originally built in 1372 (between the Qilianshan Mountains to the south and the Heishan Mountains to the north) and, like the other two spots, has photographic panoramas, in addition to a well-maintained replica fort. Historically, the fort was called the “First Impregnable Defile under Heaven.” Nowadays, like most other wall attractions, it’s living in the past.

 

After four hours, I had done all I wanted to do in Jiayuguan. While in the fort, Mrs. Taxi Driver seemed to replace herself with Mr. Taxi Driver, who proceeded to take me down to Jiayuguan South train station which is, thankfully, on the bullet train line. I spent Saturday afternoon there waiting for my evening train on to the next destination going back towards my monotonous life: Zhangye.

On 15 March 2023 there was a significant fire in Loughborough Market Place at the HSBC Bank.

 

Fire crews were still in attendance this morning some 17 hours after the initial call, with them stating via their website "We will be in attendance for the foreseeable future".

 

The building occupied by the HSBC Bank in Market Place Loughborough is a purpose-built premise. There’s been a bank on that particular site since about 1828, the previous building being renowned for its flower-covered verandahs.

 

The current building was designed by the Leicester architects Goddard, Paget and Goddard for the Leicestershire banking Company and was built by the Loughborough building firm of Moss in about 1893. The Building News, on January 14, 1898 had this to say about the building: “The new premises of the Leicestershire Banking Company, Limited, occupy a commanding position in the Market-place, all the bank offices being placed upon the ground floor. Above them are suites of private offices, and a caretaker’s residence. The plinth is of polished red granite, above which the front is of Portland stone.”

 

The commanding position presumably refers to its prominent position next to what used to be the Corn Exchange and is now the Town Hall. In 1984 the building was added to the register of listed buildings and is Grade II listed. The listing, as can be viewed on the Charnwood Borough Council website, gives quite a comprehensive description of the impressive architectural features, including the “distyle porch”, the “part-fluted columns”, the “decorative finials” and the “decorative lead finials”.

Kieran does not even acknowledge gravity, so this position ends up being stable for him. Once in a while gravity sneaks up and manages to win, but most of the time Kieran does. He does not believe in it very much. He climbs up the back of our sofa. It is smooth leather. None of our other hamsters have been able to do this, but it all somehow works for him. On most of those few occasion when gravity wins, Kieran makes it all look like exactly the way he intended everything to work out. Needless to say he is very talented. He is very entertaining to watch.

The Support Races Featured During the Day were also Full of Different Makes and Models of Ford Racing Cars From The Focus RS to the Ford Escort and the Iconic Sierra Cosworth and even the Iconic Enduro KA series was Present and with Drivers and Spectators Ready the Racing was about to begin.

In First Place and taking the Win was (Niall Murray) in his Van Diemen BD21 with a Lap Time of 50.518 and an Average Speed of 77.40mph. Incredible work there Niall Beating back Tom to take Victory in the First Race and a Well Determined Drive to Secure it.

 

In Second Place was (Tom Mills) in his Spectrum KMR with a Lap Time of 50.706 and an Average Speed of 77.38mph. Amazing Drive there Tom Keeping up with Niall and a Fantastic Battle thought the entire Race too.

Race 2 Up Next and The Final Time for Anyone Racing in Champion of Brands to Score Points and Take Victory in either First Second or Third Place. After a Thrilling End to Race 1 which Saw Tom Mills getting Beaten by Niall Murray it was time to see who could Once Again bring the Roar and Thunder Home for a Final Time.

 

In First Place was (Niall Murray) in his Van Diemen BD21 with a Lap Time of 50.584 and an Average Speed of 84.84mph. Another Incredible Drive from Niall to once again take The Final Pole Position for Champion of Brands. Brilliant Drive there Niall.

 

In Second Place was (Tom Mills) in his Spectrum KMR with a Lap Time of 50.606 and an Average Speed of 84.47mph. Another Well Deserved Second Place for Tom Showing Incredible Car Control and Bravery Pushing the Limits on Every Corner to Keep up with Niall. Fantastic Drive Tom.

Clubman Sports Prototypes were up next and thease Mad Looking Machines are known for their Supreme Aerodynamics as well as Insane Straight Line Speed. each Driver will have to be on the ball and Keeping their Machine under Constant Control as they will be Powering round this 1,2 mile Indy Circuit at Speeds of at Least 90mph.

 

Lets Look to the Track to see who Qualified where and see who will be starting the Race on Pole.

 

In First Place and taking Pole Position was (Steve Dickens) in his Mallock MK29 with a Best Lap Time of 47.146 and a Top Speed of 92.23mph. Amazing Drive there Steve Very Fast and Committed for Pole Position.

In Third Place was (Steve Dickens) in his Mallock MK29 with a Lap Time of 48.448 and an Average Speed of 86.63mph.

In First Place was (Pete Richings) in his Mallock MK30PR with a Lap Time of 48.218 and a Top Speed of 88.27mph. Incredible Driving Pete taking the Top Step of the Podium and the Race Win. A Truly Excellent Drive.

 

In Second Place was (Steve Dickens) in his Mallock MK29 with a Lap Time of 47.986 and an Average Speed of 88.17mph. Very Well Done again Steve Putting in a lot of Hard work to Reach Second Place.

 

In Third Place was (Clive Wood) in his Mallock MK23 With a Lap Time of 47.883 and an Average Speed of 88.08mph. Another Amazing P3 for Clive with a lot of Strong Determination Behind the Wheel.

Now it was time for the Creative Solutions Sports 2000's to hit the Track and After a Thunderous Performance by the Classic Clubman's Lets see what thease Mean Machines Have to Offer. With Speeds once again Reaching Nearly 92mph thease cars are Monsters and Driving and Controlling One is going to be Very Challenging with all that Break Horse Power.

 

Lets take a Look at Qualifying and see which Drivers made it to the Front end of the Grid for Race 1.

 

In First Place Taking Pole Position and the Fastest Lap was ( Neil Burroughs) in his Gunn TS12 with a Best Lap Time of 47.202 and a Top Speed of 92.12mph. Fantastic work there Neil Once Again showing the Skill and Commitment Needed for a Championship Winning Drive.

 

In Second Place was (Tom Stoten) in his Gunn TS11 with a Best Lap Time of 47.400 and A Top Speed of 91.74mph. Great Work there Tom a Well Controlled and Well Balanced Car on the Race Track to Take P2 on the Grid.

 

In Third Place was (Joshua Law) in his MCR S2 with a Best Lap Time of 47.474 and a Top Speed of 91.59mph. Well Done Josh Really Amazing work to take P3 on the Grid for The Race.

 

What a Fantastic Qualifying Session with Battles Happening all over the Field but Neil Tom and Josh have made it into the Top Three and so Lets Find out in Race 1 which of them will be Taking Home Victory.

 

Creative Funding Solutions Sports 2000 Championship (Race 1)

 

In First Place and Taking Victory was (Tom Stoten) in his Gunn TS11 with a Lap Time of 48.471 and an Average Speed of 62.75mph. Amazing Work Tom taking yourself from P2 in Qualifying to P1 and The First Race Win, Incredible Drive.

 

In Second Place was (Michel Gibbins) in his MCR S2 with a Lap Time of 48.457 and an average Speed of 62.69mph. Fantastic Work Michel and a Really Strong Drive to take P2 in the Race. A Fantastic Drive.

 

In Third Place was (Giles Billingsley) in his MCR S2 with a Lap Time of 49.321 and an Average Speed of 62.31mph. Awesome Work there Giles a Brilliant Drive to Get P3 and the Last Spot on the Podium.

After a Really Hectic First Race which saw Tom Stoden Take P1 followed by Michel Gibbins and Giles Billingsley it was Time for Race 2. Lets see if Anyone Else can Challenge these Almighty Three Drivers at the Front of the Field.

 

In First Place was (Joshua Law) in his MCR S2 with a Lap Time of 47.878 and an Average Speed of 70.46mph. Incredible Drive for Joshua Taking P1 from Tom Stoden and Claiming his First Race Win of the Weekend. Amazing work Josh.

 

In Second Place was (Tom Stoden) in his Gunn TS11 with a Lap Time of 48.409 and an Average Speed of 70.35mph. Another Very Confident and Fast Drive by Tom to Achieve Second Place showing Just How Talented and Brave of a Driver Tom is Fantastic Performance Tom.

 

In Third Place was (Michel Gibbins) in his MCR S2 with a Lap Time of 48.395 and an Average Speed of 70.32mph. Really Good Drive there Michel Fantastic Car Control and a lot of Fast Race Pace. Well Done.

with the Focus of this Race being on the Lotus Elise S1 S2 and S3 with Just One Qualifying Session and Just 1 Race This will be A Test of Will Power and Determination on the Track to see who can Take Victory.

In First Place taking the Pole and Fastest Lap was (Maurizio Sciglio) in his Lotus Elise S2 with a Best Lap Time of 53.544 and a Top Speed of 81.21mph. Fantastic work there Maurizio to take P1 and start o the Front Row of the Grid.

Now it was Time to head Back to the Blue Badged Ford Machines Once again as the Modified Ford Series Rolled out onto the Race Track with each car being Heavily Modified from their Road Counterparts. With Escort Cosworth's and RS200's Roaring and Ready to go it was Time to see what the First Group A set of Drivers could do in Qualifying.

 

Due to how large the Grids were and the Fact that both Group A and Group B Have Different Races I will only be putting up results from both Qualifying Sessions from Group A and Group B. In First Place Taking Pole Position and the Fastest Lap was (David Cockell) in his Ford Escort Cosworth with a Best Lap Time of 49.872 and a Top Speed of 87.19mph. Very Well Done David Keeping that Escort on the Track Must Have Taken some Practice no Doubt Amazing work on Getting Pole.

The Final Qualifying Session of the Day Had Come and its the Enduro KA'S. with all of the Cars on the Grid being Models of the Popular Ford KA made Between 1998-2009 thease Cars were Fun City cars that could get you from A to B with Ease. They were Also Build on a tight budget meaning that Handling Performance and Comfort were a Big Selling point of thease Brilliant little cars.

 

The Racing Versions seen here in the pictures however are built for Racing. they use different tyres but still the same Legendary 1.3 Dura Tec Engine found in their Road Going Counterparts.

In Second Place was (Piston Heads Peter Dignan) with a Lap Time of 1:03.781 and an Average Speed of 67.54mph. Incredible work there Peter Getting P2 and Standing on the Podium and Incredible Achievement.

 

In Third Place was (IP Racing Oliver Wilmot and Scott Parkin) with a Lap Time of 1:03.710 and an Average Speed of 67.47mph. Very Well Done to both Scott and Oliver on that Fantastic P3 Achievement. Something Very Special to Remember for both of you.

The white GPS recorder needs to acquire a minimum of three antenna links to the GeoSat constellation. This works outside, in most of the world, well. Cell phones are more sensitive through walls, but still provide an accurate indicator of signal penetration.

It will record up to 24 hours on a single AA battery, and the battery is loaded on the left.

On the right is the lanyard attachment. It is raised away from the body like a bumper as dual purpose for protecting the USB cover as well. The Thumb notch raises cover for reset and access to the female mini USB port - as on MP3 players and/or cell-phone.

This view is of the bottom. At the battery end on the other side are LED function indicators, surrounding the only key - power.

 

At the narrow end of the blue USB Accelerometer is the removable protective cover of the male USB A connector, like a USB flash drive. There are no outside controls and LED indicators operate visually behind the translucent blue case. The case must be opened to access the Flash Drive chip, normally left in place, and to change the AA battery - remove the screw (which can be longer to attach it to monitored equipment) and then the case will hinge open from the lanyard end. The AA battery lasts a week and collects data until the battery dies. My modification was inspired by dollar store cheap blinky toys - I melted a hole in the case, just above the +positive terminal, and inserted an insulating scrap piece of plastic, holding the contacts apart until it is removed, completing the circuit. On the lanyard end - a braided loop suitable as both handle and carbiner attachment I fashioned from light-weight cotton twine so it won't affect the data collection.

First up on the Sunday for Qualifying was The AMOC GT/GT4 Championship and with a Grid of Just 5 Cars for this One its going to be Very Interesting to see out of the 5 Drivers who Can set the Quickest Pace During Qualifying. Lets Find Out who took Pole and the Fastest Lap.

 

In First Place taking Pole Position and the Fastest Lap was the Duo Pair of Rikki Cann and Samuel Wilson) in their Aston Martin V8 Vantage with a Best Lap Time of 1:00.791 and a Top Speed of 71.53mph. Fantastic Work both Ricky and Rob Really Pushing the Aston Martin Hard and Gunning fort that All Important Victory come the First Race.

 

In Second Place was (Jamie Sturges) in his VW Golf TCR with a Best Lap Time of 1:03.245 and a Top Speed of 68.75mph. Amazing Work there Jamie Pushing that Golf and Racing it Like a Pro.

 

In Third Place was the Duo of (Whit and Fenn) in their Lotus Elise Motorsport with a Best Lap Time of 1:04.089 and a Top Speed of 67.85mph. Great Work there Whit and Fenn Fantastic Driving and Great Team Work.

 

Three Very Quick and Capable Cars in the Hands of Some Very Competitive Drivers will make for a Really Fantastic Race. With all three Cars Having Different Power Outputs it will be Interesting to see what Techniques Each of them will use to their Advantage Come the First Race.

In First Place taking the Final Win of the Day for AMOC GT was (Rob Fenn) in his Lotus Elise Motorsport) with a Best Lap Time of 50.083 and an Average Speed of 83.82mph. Congratulations Rob what a Drive and What a Car Fantastic Work.

 

In Second Place was (Samuel Wilson) in his Aston Martin V8 Vantage with a Best Lap Time of 51.459 and an Average Speed of 80.50mph. Amazing Driving there Samuel Keeping Close to Rob on Many Occasions around the Circuit and a Cracking Overtake on Rob through Clearways.

 

In Third Place was (Julian Reddyhough) in his Aston Martin Vantage with a Best Lap Time of 59.552 and an Average Speed of 71.18mph. Super Driving From Julian Smooth through the Corners and Making sure to Hang onto that Third Place During the Entirety of the Race.

In First Place taking the Victory was (Brian Trott) in his Mazda MX5 MK1 with a Best Lap Time of 58.179 and an Average Speed of 73.82mph. Super Work there Brain Racing Against another 34 Competitors in Identical Cars and Winning takes Incredible Driver Skill and Talent and you Really Showed that During the Race. Congratulations.

 

In Second Place was (Oliver Allwood) in his Mazda MX5 MK1 with a Best Lap Time of 57.532 and an Average Speed of 73.81mph. Well Done Oliver Fantastic Driving and a Really Great Defence of Second Place thought the entire Race.

The Mazda MX5 Super Cup Championship was next Up and after A Whole Day of Qualifying and Qualifying Second Fastest on Saturday it was time to see what Each of the Drivers could do and How they would use their Style and Race Craft to Gain a Victory. With Another Large Grid of 30 Cars Anything Can Happen and Racing always has its Moments of Unpredictability.

Sheela-na-gig is visible in external face of E wall of Dunnaman Castle. The position of the Sheela-na-gig was recorded in 2001 as being located halfway up the external face of E wall of tower house. Described by Freitag as a ‘large figure on slab and set within frame. Roundish head shows several billowy lines across forehead, oval eyes, wedge nose and open mouth. Extremely long arms, with open armpits, and hands passing beneath thighs to grab vulva. Flat breasts on heavily incised ribcase which extends over abdomen. Oval-shaped vulva, hanging between widely splayed legs. Large toes touching edge of frame, and between these, directly underneath vulva, there is an egg-shaped object’ (Freitag 2004).

In 1865 the castle was described as following; ‘The Castle of Dunnaman consists of a massive oblong tower, surrounded by a wall now nearly destroyed. The tower is 46 ft. in length by 33 ft. in width, and is only 31 ft. in height to the present summit of the wall, which clearly was never much higher; but there may have been apartments in the roof, as can be seen in the much more lofty tower of Annadown. The peculiarities of the building, among which may be reckoned the immense thickness of the walls in proportion to the size of the tower, are well seen in the two accompanying ground-plans. The walls are 8 ft. in diameter, or about double the thickness of those which are generally to be found in Irish mediaeval castles.

The entrance door leads into a narrow passage, in the roof of which is a square hole from 2 to 3 ft. in diameter communicating with the room above. This is popularly called the murdering hole, and was evidently used for pouring or flinging down missiles on the heads of assailants. There are two round holes in the door; one in the moulding of the jamb, and another at the top of the arch, which would serve, cither for shooting through, or as a spy-hole. The jambs are ornamented with punched work, the pattern on one side being in squares like a chess-board. To the right of the passage is a small room, 8 ft. long by 5 ft. 6 in. wide, which was probably used as a guard-room: on the left is a spiral staircase.

The principal chamber on the ground-floor is 32 ft. long, by 17 ft. wide; lighted merely by three loopholes very widely splayed, and contains no fireplace. It is covered by a vault, which, up to about one third of its height from the springing, is constructed of wrought stones laid horizontally, corbelling out one over the other, and of which the soffits are cut to the form of the arch. The vault above these wrought stones is composed of rubble thrown in from above on to the centre, which was afterwards removed. There are corbels in the walls for supporting the beams of a floor, and additional loop-holes above this level, so that there were two stories beneath the vault.

Over the entrance passage and guard-room, and on a level with the floor just described, is a small room 14 ft. by 8 ft. 6 in. entered from the staircase in a peculiar way, which cannot well be shewn on either of the ground plans. Above the door opening to this room, the staircase leads to the principal apartment of the Castle. It is of the same size as the vaulted room underneath, and contains a large fireplace and the only one in the building, and is lighted by three narrow windows. From this room a passage communicates, in the thickness of the wall, with a garderobe. Near the fireplace, a short and narrow passage leads to a small room of the same dimensions as, and immediately over the one already described. This room is lighted by a window 1 ft. in width, the largest in the Castle, the splay or inner arch of which is formed of finely cut stone, similar to the splay arches in the Prior's house of the Franciscan Priory, Adare. No traces of the construction of the roof remain; but there is a square hole on the summit of the western wall, in the centre of its breadth, which communicates with the garderobe shaft below, and was apparently constructed for the purpose of flushing it from above.

Among the windows are examples of round, square, and ogee heads; the dripstones over those in the two small rooms are very singular, and characteristic of Irish buildings of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
