Kom Ombo is home to one of Egypt's most picturesque ruins, the Temple of the crocodile-god Sobek and Haroeris (Horus the Elder). The temple was built during the Ptolemaic dynasty in c180-47 BC in an elevated position overlooking the Nile, giving the site one of the most attractive of locations amongst Egypt's ancient monuments.
The temple is unique in being dedicated as a twin sanctuary to two patron gods, southern half belonged to the crocodile-headed Sobek (or Sobk) and the northern half to the falcon-headed Haroeris. The twin shrine is often referred to simply as the Temple of Sobek owing to the fame of the crocodile cult here, where live crocodiles were once kept as living embodiments of the god and to whom offerings were made. Several of these crocodiles can still be seen in mummified form in the small museum that was recently built adjacent to the site (alas no photography allowed in the museum).
The structure is less complete and more ruinous than many of the best known Egyptian temples, but this does at least make it a more picturesque, photography friendly site than some. The main core of the temple is fairly well preserved with the columns (with richly carved capitals) of the hypostyle hall and successive chambers and sanctuaries still standing at full height. The main courtyard is partially preseved but the original main facade with its pylon towers and gates has long since tumbled into the Nile as a result of erosion caused by the site's proximity to the river.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the temple is its relief decoration, with figures of the exotic, animal-headed deities and kings in unusually high relief (for Egyptian art) on every wall and pillar.
Frustratingly our arrival here had been delayed by the lengthy return from our morning excursion, thus we only managed to catch the temple in rapidly dwindling light. Conditions became quite limiting, though to see the structure illuminated in the darkness was a bonus.

Here is another odd sleeping position. Ozzy seems to be slabbed out on and off his doggy bed. It cracks me up when I see this. There was barely any light in the room, so I had to shoot at this ridiculously high ISO and I think the Sony did damn well for it.

Helicopter extraction of Dutch marines after a raid on enemy positions.
Dutch Marines of 11 Raiding Squadron raid enemy positions at Cincu Training Area, Romania. During Noble Jump 2017 they conduct an air assault with American Chinook transport helicopters and get fire support from US Apache attack helicopters. After the firefight is won, they take prisoners and execute a medevac for one of their wounded comrades.

The white GPS recorder needs to acquire a minimum of three antenna links to the GeoSat constellation. This works outside, in most of the world, well. Cell phones are more sensitive through walls, but still provide an accurate indicator of signal penetration.
It will record up to 24 hours on a single AA battery, and the battery is loaded on the left.
On the right is the lanyard attachment. It is raised away from the body like a bumper as dual purpose for protecting the USB cover as well. The Thumb notch raises cover for reset and access to the female mini USB port - as on MP3 players and/or cell-phone.
This view is of the bottom. At the battery end on the other side are LED function indicators, surrounding the only key - power.
At the narrow end of the blue USB Accelerometer is the removable protective cover of the male USB A connector, like a USB flash drive. There are no outside controls and LED indicators operate visually behind the translucent blue case. The case must be opened to access the Flash Drive chip, normally left in place, and to change the AA battery - remove the screw (which can be longer to attach it to monitored equipment) and then the case will hinge open from the lanyard end. The AA battery lasts a week and collects data until the battery dies. My modification was inspired by dollar store cheap blinky toys - I melted a hole in the case, just above the +positive terminal, and inserted an insulating scrap piece of plastic, holding the contacts apart until it is removed, completing the circuit. On the lanyard end - a braided loop suitable as both handle and carbiner attachment I fashioned from light-weight cotton twine so it won't affect the data collection.
A spring coil of travel USB cable. www.gcdataconcepts.com/ also supplied (and not shown:) a pocket screwdriver (identical to standard convention imprint spiff.) and a small, clear travel case with room for the micro SD chip next to the included MicroSD adapter. The packing slip accompanied the last inclusion - a strip of paper reading "Thank you for purchasing this USB-accelerometer. All documantation and software is contained on the device. Me mis à l'abri d'une timide pluie fine sous l'entrée du palais de Tokyo. Des skaters refluèrent de l'esplanade en contrebas et poursuivirent leurs figures. L'averse ne dura pas. Ils restèrent. Moi aussi. J'avais mon appareil en bandoulière.
First part of first exercise in Strobist's "Lighting 102-class"
8 pictures illuminated by one flash at 0-180 degrees angle from camera.
Camera is placed about 6 feet from the head which is placed about 5 feet away from the white bakground.
Gear:
Canon 5d Mk II @ ISO:100 Shutter: 1/200
EF 100mm 2.8 Macro @ f/8
Profoto D4 4800 @ 4.0
Prohead with zoom reflector @ 7
Learning continues. Here's the execution of the Lighting 102: 1.2 - Position | Distance exercise. The point here is to experience how light-to-objects-distance ratios interact with the light falloff. The distance between object and the wall was around 70cm. The pictures show situations when the light source (bare flash) is within 100, 120, 220, 320 and 420cm from the wall respectively, from left to right. Note that the smaller the distance between the objects in the scene in comparison to the distance from the light source, the more evenly the objects appear to be illuminated. Bringing the light source closer allows more selective illumination.
I did my best to keep the lighting and photo angles consistent, but due to claustrophobic nature of the "studio" and the lack of tripod, this was somewhat difficult. The exposure was adjusted with respect to the middle of the lower edge of the lampshade.
I took advantage of the set-up and as a side exercise practised the work-flow with the ColorChecker and DNG profiles for correction of the camera response in Lightroom. In all pictures, a profile created based on the last of them (guess why...) was applied.
[Update] Acutally I'm not too happy with the execution of this exercise - I didn't keep the lighting angle constant, which affects the distribution of shadows. I plan to repeat it before proceeding...
During NATO exercise Noble Jump 2017, Spanish, British and Romanian forces participated in a training exercise. In the scenario, an infantry company advanced until being engaged by an enemy force from several defensive positions. Once fired upon, the infantry disembarked and attacked with support from their vehicles heavy weapons.
The Spanish provided the attacking infantry company while the Romanians played the opposing forces.
I stood here in this position for almost 30 minutes taking in the view over Llangorse lake in Brecon. The mountains just to the right of the hut are Pen-y-fan and Cribyn (Brecon beacons), it was a toss up between climbing that mountain for 40 minutes or use that time to stay warm in the car beside the lake... yep the car was too much of a good offer. Actually there was a low cloud base at the top of the peak as i drove passed which would have ruined the whole journey (still present on the peak). I had to act like a big kid and see how far around this Jetty i could walk before i touched into the water.
