Born with the genetic anomaly of a 'stopped biological cell clock', Daegon's body doesn't know what age it's actually supposed to be. Together with the accelerated regeneration of his bodily tissue and the fact that cardiac muscle (which never tires) is fused into all of his ex-tensor musculature and there comes a better understanding of why he is called the 'work horse'.

His mother insisted her son was born to work. From the day he could walk, he was running. From the day he could talk, he was learning to be a polyglot and from the day he could work - he was truly at home. Hiroshi did more work than all of his fellow field workers in the rice-patties combined. He never seemed to tire even in the harsh cold or blistering sun. If there was something to do, too difficult for the others in the field; Hiroshi did it.
Unfortunately, "the nail that sticks out is the first to be pounded down" or so they say. Jealous co-workers pushed on by their superiors who didn't want to see him rise above them sought to beat him into an inch of his life. Hiroshi's life was so long though that they tired before he did. The next day, he was back at it, doing his work and his former co-worker's work as well. He was found out by the local lord and put to a different kind of work.
Training of the immortal by four swordsmen together with masters of unarmed martial arts began. Even on a 'round the clock' basis the masters found their pupil to be insatiable. He learned from them, he mastered beyond them and he went to the battlefield where his lord insisted his place was. He fought, he 'died', he stood and he fought again. He outlived his teachers, he outlived his students, he outlived his 'lord' and became hounded by the descendants of all as a monstrosity among men.
It wasn't until a passing dragon of dead men picked up the insatiable demon that peace returned to the land. Now the work-horse has once again found a different 'school of work' to be performed. Journeying and learning more, he seems to always be just in passing a tale told and re-told in generations each of whom get to see a bit of an Ox's diligent strength.
In several different prefectures he has been called the Ushi-Oni and the Gyuuki, though none of these names have ever 'stuck' with him.

This anonymous work has been attributed by Beach to Manohar and by Welch, Brand and Lowry, and Okada to Basawan. The chromatic subtlety, beautifully realized drapery, and sophisticated handling of linear perspective are worthy of both these artists. The subject matter clearly is inspired by multiple European models; the woman’s windswept drapery echoes that of the Pietas Regia depicted on the second frontispiece of the Royal Polyglot Bible, which was adapted to a reclining nursing posture, hence prompting the Virgin and Child identification. The four-cartouche inscription has no overt Christian associations, making this identification tenuous, although such imagery is undoubtedly embedded in this composition’s multifarious sources.
