The Plantin-Moretus Museum (Dutch: Plantin-Moretusmuseum) is a printing museum in Antwerp, Belgium which focuses on the work of the 16th-century printers Christophe Plantin and Jan Moretus. It is located in their former residence and printing establishment, the Plantin Press, at the Vrijdagmarkt (Friday Market) in Antwerp, and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005.

Carter's son Matthew would later describe this research as helping to demonstrate "that the finest collection of printing types made in typography's golden age was in perfect condition (some muddle aside) [along with] Plantin's accounts and inventories which names the cutters of his types."

 

In 2002 the museum was nominated as UNESCO World Heritage Site and in 2005 was inscribed onto the World Heritage list.

Khazrati Imam is named after Kaffal Shashi (Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Ismail al-Kaffal al-Kabir as-Shashi, also known as Abu Bakr as-Shashi) 904-979, who was born into a family of locksmiths (kaffal means locksmith), became renowned as a spiritual successor to the hadith scholar Muhammad al-Bukhari (810-870); a poet, polyglot, and the author of many books on Islamic Law. After studying in Baghdad he finally returned to Tashkent to become the first Tashkent Imam.

The Lost Continent is a crazy-quilt of a film, with chunks of several unrelated plotlines sewn together willy nilly. Eric Porter plays Lansen, the captain of a tramp steamer who has agreed to deliver contraband dynamite for a hefty price. His passengers are a polyglot of the good, the bad and the worse. Shipwrecked on an mysterious isle in the Sargasso Sea, Lansen and party find themselves prisoners of a bizarre inbred colony still governed by the long-abandoned edicts of the Spanish Inquisition. The film is no more coherent than the original Dennis Wheatley novel Uncharted Seas, but that doesn't detract from its endearing wackiness. To their credit, the cast members of Lost Continent play the script straight, which merely adds to the kinky fun.

It would be exaggerating to call The Lost Continenht a very good film, but it's a strangely appealing one. This is especially true for those who are fans of science fiction films, especially of the "lost world" sub-genre. Aficionados may argue that Continent doesn't actually belong in that "lost world" category as, despite its title, the voyagers don't really discover a long-lost continent so much as encounter a strange civilization existing in the Sargasso Sea -- but that's splitting hairs. Continent has giant sea creatures, man-eating seaweed, people walking on snowshoes while being held aloft by balloons, and a group who still thinks the Spanish Inquisition is going on -- more than enough to satisfy any fan. Granted, it's totally ridiculous and immensely silly, and granted that the melodrama is piled on with a sledgehammer; yet that somehow adds to Continent's appeal. (For young male viewers, it also doesn't hurt that Continent features some very attractive women among its cast members.) The filmmakers have so much fun setting up this strange world and the exploring it that it's rather contagious -- so much so that most viewers won't mind the crudity of some of the special effects. Continent is a good picture to approach on a rainy day when the viewer has just popped some corn and feels like something that will make him feel like a wide-eyed 10-year-old again.

Daniel Barenboim (born 15 November 1942) is an Argentine-Israeli pianist and conductor, who also is a citizen of Israel and Spain. He is general music director of the Berlin State Opera, and the Staatskapelle Berlin; he previously served as Music Director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre de Paris and La Scala in Milan. Barenboim is known for his work with the West–Eastern Dvan Orchestra, a Seville-based orchestra of young Arab and Israeli musicians, and as a resolute critic of the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.

 

Barenboim has received many awards and prizes, including an honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire, France's Légion d'honneur both as a Commander and Grand Officier, and the German Großes Bundesverdienstkreuz and Willy Brandt Award. Together with the Palestinian-American scholar Edward Said, he was given Spain's Prince of Asturias Concord Award. He has won seven Grammy awards for his work and discography. Barenboim is a polyglot, fluent in Spanish, Hebrew, English, French, Italian, and German.

 

Daniel Barenboim was born in 1942 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to Argentinian Jewish parents, Aida (née Schuster) and Enrique Barenboim. He started piano lessons at the age of five with his mother, continuing to study with his father, who remained his only teacher. On 19 August 1950, at the age of seven, he gave his first formal concert in his hometown, Buenos Aires.

 

In 1952, Barenboim's family moved to Israel. Two years later, in the summer of 1954, his parents took him to Salzburg to take part in Igor Markevitch's conducting classes. During that summer he also met and played for Wilhelm Furtwängler, who has remained a central musical influence and ideal for Barenboim. Furtwängler called the young Barenboim a "phenomenon" and invited him to perform the Beethoven First Piano Concerto with the Berlin Philharmonic, but Barenboim's father considered it too soon after the Second World War for a child of Jewish parents to be performing in Berlin. In 1955 Barenboim studied harmony and composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris.

 

On 15 June 1967, Barenboim and British cellist Jacqueline du Pré were married in Israel at a Western Wall ceremony, Du Pré having converted to Judaism. Acting as one of the witnesses was the conductor Zubin Mehta, a long-time friend of Barenboim. Since "I was not Jewish I had to temporarily be renamed Moshe Cohen, which made me a 'kosher witness'," Mehta recalled. Du Pré retired from music in 1973, after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). The marriage lasted until du Pré's death in 1987.

 

In the early 1980s, Barenboim began an affair with the Russian pianist Elena Bashkirova, with whom he has two sons born in Paris prior to du Pré's death: David Arthur, born 1983, and Michael, born 1985. Barenboim worked to keep his relationship with Bashkirova hidden from du Pré, and believed he had succeeded. He and Bashkirova married in 1988. Both sons are part of the music world: David is a manager-writer for the German hip-hop band Level 8, and Michael Barenboim is a classical violinist (Wikipedia).

 

4291. For reasons of historical interest and authenticity, we begin a series of photos from the albums of the late Frank Derek Simon [June 4, 1919 - Oct. 6, 2004].

 

At the outbreak of WWII, Derek Simon, as he was known, was a young Bridlington, Yorkshire-born merchant marine officer whose family had settled in New Zealand.

 

Mr Simon was to serve with the RAN during WWII, and while some details are now not completely clear he was rated an RAN Lieutenant in July 1942, and a Lieutenant Commander in July 1950, although by then he had resumed his merchant marine career, and at some point in the postwar period became a Great Barrier Reef pilot.

 

Among the ships he served on during WWII were the Australian-manned armed merchant cruiser HMS KANIMBLA, the minelayer HMAS BUNGAREE, and corvette HMAS KAPUNDA.

 

These photos comes to us courtesy of Graeme Andrews, who came to know Mr Simon late in his life when he was an important member of the the Sydney Heritage Fleet preservation organisation's research and library group. Graeme interviewed Mr Simon for an article on his Barrier reef pilot years published in the SHF's journal 'Australian Sea Heritage' in issue 53, Summer 1998, and was given access to his photo albums and [forbidden] wartime diaries.

 

What follows are some rare glimpses from the sea lanes of WWII, with many ships and incidents, seen mainly from the decks of HMS/HMAS KANIMBLA, above, anchored at Finschafen, New Guinea, in early 1940.

 

We'll see the capture of a Soviet blockade runner off Japan in the period of the notorious Hitler-Stalin Non-Aggression Pact [also called the Molotov-Ribbentropp Pact] signed on August 23, 1939 - a temporary treaty of convenience that allowed the Soviets to grab a slice of Poland, and which also resulted in Soviet invasion of Finland.

 

We'll also see rare images of the raid on German shipping at the Iranian port of Bandar Sharpur on August 24, 1941 - a truly dramatic sideshow of the war, when KANIMBLA led a polyglot little fleet of ships, including a tugboat and a dhow, into the hostile port and created utter havoc.

 

These things will unfold, perhaps a little slowly, as we sort the many images before us out.

The origins of the madrasa date to the death of Barak Khan's father, Suyunidzh-khan (Suyunich-khan), who was one of the grandsons of the Timurid ruler Ulugh Begh (1394-1449). Upon his death, Suyunidzh was buried in Tashkent to the south of the Kaffal Shashi Mausoleum in a mausoleum comprising a domed chamber and a nearby khanqah (Sufi lodge). Another small mausoleum was built beside it, likely for a Muslim cleric whose name has not survived. In the 1550s Barak Khan added a madrasa and integrated the two mausoleums and the khanqah into one harmonious whole, entered via a monumental pishtaq.

 

Patron: Barak Khan, an alternate name for Muhammad Shaybani Khan, c.1451-1510, an Uzbek leader who consolidated various Uzbek tribes and laid the foundations for their ascendance in Transoxiana and the establishment of the Khanate of Bukhara. He was a Shaybanid or descendant of Shiban, the fifth son of Jochi, Genghis Khan’s eldest son. After displacing the Timurids, Barak Khan was appointed ruler of Tashkent at the behest of the ruling khans. Over time, he gained greater autonomy and took the helm of the dynasty itself, ruling as the supreme Khan from 1551-56.

Arundathi Nag, is prominent South Indian polyglot film actress and theatre personality. She has been involved with multi-lingual Theatre in India, for over 25 years, first in Bombay where got involved with Indian People's Theatre Association and did various productions in Gujarati, Marathi, and Hindi theatre, besides getting involved in television, director Jyoti Vyas's Gujarati TV series, Haji Aavti Kaal Che. Later and after her marriage to Kannada actor-director Shankar Nag (1954-1990), her association with theatre continued in Bangalore, culminating in realizing the dream project of her late husband, the Ranga Shankara theatre.

In 1991, Török wrote that the bathhouse was one of the largest in Europe, visited by 2 million people each year. I don't know how it is currently ranked in size, but I can only imagine that the number of guests has increased exponentially with the rise of foreign tourism. It happens to be the most famous co-ed bathhouse in town, complete with floating games of chess, and has several parts. When I visited, these including a gym area and two major bathing areas: one is the medical baths, designed by Gyõzõ Czigler and Ede Dvorzsák (from 1909-13), and built before the other parts. The dome of the main entrance has a huge art nouveau mosaic on the inside. Török adds that the northern wing of the building was designed by Imre Francsek, and built in 1927 with a neo-baroque interior. I don't remember if I saw anything like this, but I did see a great changing area with classic wooden doors, by an open-air passage that leads to the immense complex of outdoor pools. You can swim laps, play, or just enjoy the hot jets if you're lucky enough to find one available. Listen to the polyglot of languages as you wander around to the indoor complex of baths: these range in temperature from frigid to scalding, and one of them even has a motorized whirlpool that whips you all around like a carnival ride. The current is fast and strong enough that it can actually be difficult to climb back out! This was my favorite. :)

Listen to the polyglot of languages as you wander around to the indoor complex of baths: these range in temperature from frigid to scalding, and one of them even has a motorized whirlpool that whips you all around like a carnival ride. The current is fast and strong enough that it can actually be difficult to climb back out! This was my favorite. :)

The Kaffal Shashi mausoleum stands at the northwest corner of the Khast-Imam square, a cluster of historical buildings that comprises the heart of old Tashkent. It commemorates the life of Kaffal Shashi. No trace of the original building survives as it was replaced by the current building constructed when Tashkent fell under the rule of the Shaybanids.

 

Kaffal Shashi: Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Ismail Al-Kaffal Al-Kabir as-Shashi (also known as Abu Bakr as-Shashi) 904-979, was born into a family of locksmiths (kaffal means locksmith), became renowned as a spiritual successor to the hadith scholar Muhammad al-Bukhari (810-870); a poet, polyglot, and the author of many books on Islamic Law. After studying in Baghdad he finally returned to Tashkent to become the first Tashkent Imam. The Square was named in his honour.

Feldmarschall Helmuth von Moltke, "The Great Silent One", as the Prussians called him. (Although Baroness Spitzemberg, who was once seated next to him at a dinner table, found him less taciturn than she expected). As a matter of fact, Moltke was a notable polyglot, so that the mocking parlance of the people called him "silent in seven languages".

The Town Hall (French: Hôtel de Ville, Dutch: Stadhuis) of the City of Brussels is a Gothic building from the Middle Ages. It is located on the famous Grand Place in Brussels, Belgium.

The oldest part of the present Town Hall is its east wing (to the left, when facing the front). This wing, together with a small belfry, was built from 1402 to 1420 under direction of Jacob van Thienen, and future additions were not originally foreseen. However, the admission of the craft guilds into the traditionally patrician city government probably spurred interest in expanding the building. A second, shorter wing was completed within five years of Charles the Bold laying its first stone in 1444. The right wing was built by Guillaume (Willem) de Voghel who in 1452 also built the Magna Aula.

The 96 meter (310 ft) high tower in Brabantine Gothic style emerged from the plans of Jan van Ruysbroek, the court architect of Philip the Good. By 1455 this tower had replaced the older belfry. Above the roof of the Town Hall, the square tower body narrows to a lavishly pinnacled octagonal openwork. Atop the spire stands a 5-meter-high gilt metal statue of the archangel Michael, patron saint of Brussels, slaying a dragon or devil. The tower, its front archway and the main building facade are conspicuously off-center relative to one another. According to legend, the architect upon discovering this "error" leapt to his death from the tower. More likely, the asymmetry of the Town Hall was an accepted consequence of the scattered construction history and space constraints.

Peter Ustinov (1921-2004) was a two-time Academy Award-winning film actor, director, writer, journalist, and raconteur. He played Batiatus in Stanley Kubrick's Spartacus (1960) and had also roles in films like Quo vadis? (1951), Topkapi (1964) and Death on the Nile (1978). Ustinov wrote and directed many acclaimed stage plays and staged operas such as 'The Magic Flute' and 'Don Giovanni'. The Brit became also a Swiss citizen in 1961

 

Peter Ustinov was born Peter Alexander Freiherr von Ustinow in 1921 in Swiss Cottage, Londo. He was the son of Nadezhda Leontievna (née Benois) and Jona Freiherr von Ustinow. His father was of one-quarter Polish Jewish, one-half Russian, one-eighth Ethiopian, and one-eighth German descent, while his mother was of one-half Russian, one-quarter Italian, one-eighth French, and one-eighth German ancestry. Ustinov had ancestral connections to Russian nobility as well as to the Ethiopian Royal Family. His father, also known as "Klop Ustinov", was a pilot in the German Air Force during World War I. In 1919, Jona Freiherr von Ustinow joined his mother and sister in St Petersburg, Russia, where he met his future wife, artist Nadia Benois, who worked for the Imperial Mariinsky Ballet and Opera House in St Petersburg. In 1920, in a modest and discreet ceremony at a Russian-German church in St Petersburg, Ustinov's father married Nadia. In February 1921, when she was seven months pregnant with Peter, the couple emigrated from Russia in the aftermath of the Communist Revolution. Young Peter was brought up in a multilingual family. He was fluent in Russian, French, Italian and German, as well as English. He attended Westminster College (1934-1937), took the drama and acting class under Michel St Denis at the London Theatre Studio (1937-1939), and made his stage debut in 1938 at the Stage Theatre Club in Surrey. He wrote his first play at the age of 19. In 1939, he made his London stage debut in a revue sketch, then had regular performances with the Aylesbury Repertory Company. The following year, he made his film debut in Hullo, Fame! (Andrew Buchanan, 1940) starring Jean Kent. From 1942- to 1946, Ustinov served with the British Army's Royal Sussex Regiment. As a private, he was 'batman' (a personal servant) for lieutenant-colonel David Niven, and the two became lifelong friends. Ustinov spent most of his service working with the Army Cinema Unit, where he was involved in making recruitment films, wrote plays and appeared in three films as an actor, including a small role as a priest in One of Our Aircraft Is Missing (Michael Powell, Emeric Pressburger, 1942). He also co-wrote and acted in The Way Ahead / The Immortal Battalion (Carol Reed, 1944), starring David Niven and Stanley Holloway.

 

From the 1950s on, Peter Ustinov had a stellar film career as an actor, director, and writer. Producer Sam Zimbalist initially thought that the 30-year-old actor was too young to play Roman emperor Nero in the epic Quo Vadis (Mervyn LeRoy, Anthony Mann, 1951), based on Henryk Sienkiewicz's novel. After a whole year of hesitation, Zimbalist received a telegraphic message from Ustinov that he would soon be too old for the role if they waited any longer, as Nero himself had already died at the age of 31. Ustinov was then finally hired. His portrayal of the autocratic, mentally ill and megalomaniac emperor was honoured with a Golden Globe and nominated for an Oscar. Another screen acting gem is his role as the polyglot stable master in Max Ophüls's masterpiece Lola Montès (1955), starring Martine Carol. His other films include Beau Brummell () and We Are No Angels (Michael Curtiz, 1955) with Humphrey Bogart. In 1957, he played the leading role of Soviet secret agent Michel Kaminsky in Henri-Georges Clouzot's political thriller Spies at Work. He also wrote and directed theatre plays, in which he also acted. In 1958 he received two Tony Award nominations, for Best Actor (Dramatic) and Best Play Author, for 'Romanoff and Juliet', which parodied the East-West conflict. Ustinov later adapted the play for a 1961 film. In the late 1950s, he also made a comedy record, 'Mock Mozart' and 'Phoney Folk Lor'". He had been performing these as party pieces. Overdubbing allowed Ustinov to sing multiple parts. His producer was George Martin, the future producer of The Beatles. During the 1960s, Ustinov was awarded two Oscars for Best Supporting Actor, one for his portrayal of Lentulus Batiatus in Spartacus (Stanley Kubrick, 1960) and one for his role as Arthur Simon Simpson in the Heist film Topkapi (Jules Dassin, 1964) opposite Melina Mercouri. He received two more Oscar nominations as an actor and writer. In January 1963, the Mirisch Company sued him for damages after he pulled out at the 11th hour to play Inspector Clouseau in The Pink Panther (Blake Edwards, 1963), which was in production in Rome with his replacement, Peter Sellers. He acted in such films as The Comedians (Peter Glenville, 1967) with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, based on the novel by Graham Greene, and the comedy Hot Millions (Eric Till, 1968) with Maggie Smith, for which he was again nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, which he co-wrote with author Ira Wallach. He also wrote and directed the brilliant Billy Budd (Peter Ustinov, 1962) in which he played the role of the captain himself opposite Terrence Stamp. It was followed by Lady L (Peter Ustinov, 1965) with Sophia Loren and David Niven. During the 1960s, with the encouragement of Sir Georg Solti, Ustinov directed several operas, including Puccini's 'Gianni Schicchi', Ravel's 'L'heure espagnole', Schoenberg's 'Erwartung', and Mozart's 'The Magic Flute'. In the following decade, he acted in films like Logan's Run (Michael Anderson, 1976) starring Michael York. He played an old man surviving a totalitarian future. He was also the voice of Prince John in Disney's animated film Robin Hood (Wolfgang Reitherman, 1973). He appeared in television plays and shows and won three Emmys: in 1958 for Omnibus: The Life of Samuel Johnson, in 1967 for Barefoot in Athens and in 1970 for A Storm in Summer.

 

Peter Ustinov's career slowed down a bit in the 1970s, but he made a comeback as Hercule Poirot in the star-studded Death on the Nile (John Guillermin, 1978), based on Agatha Christie's novel. In the 1980s, Ustinov recreated Poirot in several subsequent television movies and theatrical films, including Evil Under the Sun (Guy Hamilton, 1982) and Appointment with Death (Michael Winner, 1988). Ustinov's performance, increasingly based on his own persona, enjoyed great popularity. He also wrote and directed the British-Yugoslav drama Memed My Hawk (Peter Ustinov, 1984) with Herbert Lom. It is an adaptation of the 1955 Turkish novel 'Memed, My Hawk', the debut novel of Yaşar Kemal, nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Memed, My Hawk was produced in Yugoslavia following the Turkish government's refusal of permission to film. Ustinov's cinema work in the 1990s includes his superb performance as Professor Gus Nikolais in the film drama Lorenzo's Oil (George Miller, 1992) opposite Nick Nolte and Susan Sarandon. This character was partially inspired by Hugo Wolfgang Moser, a research scientist who had been director of the Neurogenetics Research Center at the Kennedy Krieger Institute and Professor of Neurology and Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University. Ustinov's expertise in dialectic and physical comedy made him a regular guest on talk shows. His witty and multidimensional humour was legendary, and he later published a collection of his jokes and quotations summarizing his wide popularity as a raconteur. He was also an internationally acclaimed TV journalist. In 1984, he unwittingly witnessed the assassination of India's prime minister Indira Gandhi. She was to be interviewed by Ustinov for his three-part BBC series Ustinov's People, but on the way she was murdered by her two bodyguards. Ustinov covered over 100,000 miles and visited more than 30 Russian cities during the making of his well-received BBC television series Russia (1986). In his autobiographies, 'Dear Me' (1977) and 'My Russia' (1996), Ustinov revealed his observations on his life, career, and his multicultural and multi-ethnic background. He wrote and directed numerous stage plays, successfully presenting them in several countries. His drama, 'Photo Finish', was staged in New York, London and St. Petersburg, Russia, where Ustinov also directed the acclaimed production. The cosmopolitan multi-talent was a UNICEF Special Ambassador from 1968, Chairman of the World Federalist Movement from 1990 and founder of the Peter Ustinov Foundation for the Improvement of Living Conditions for Children and Young People in 1999. Ustinov served as Rector of Dundee University for six years. He was awarded the Benjamin Franklin Medal from the Royal Society of Arts in 1957 and was knighted in 1990. From 1971 until he died in 2004, Peter Ustinov's permanent residence was a château in Bursins, Vaud, Switzerland. He died of heart failure in 2004, in a clinic in Genolier, also in Vaud. His funeral service was held at Geneva's historic Cathedral of St. Pierre, and he was laid to rest in the village cemetery of Bursins. Ustinov's first wife was Angela Lansbury's half-sister, Isolde Denham. They were married from 1940 to 1950 when the union ended in divorce. Ustinov and Denham had one child together, Tamara Ustinov. Ustinov and his second wife, Canadian actress Suzanne Cloutier, had three children: two daughters (Andrea and Pavla Ustinov) and a son, Igor Ustinov. His third wife was French journalist Hélène du Lau d'Allemans, to whom he was married from 1972 until his death.
