Last picture of 2019. High plains in the winter.

pawnee grasslands, weld county - northern colorado

From this last spring. This is a hill or mountain on the west side of the Carrizo Plain, part of Carrizo Plain National Monument. With bonus soaring bird, probably a raven.

The B&H rolls through Coopers Plains, New York behind a pair of ALCO C424s with a train of mostly empty propane tanks from Savona heading east towards the NS interchange in Painted Post. B&H operates one of the few remaining sections of the Lackawanna mainline between Buffalo and Binghamton that wasn't abandoned immediately after the Erie Lackawanna merger in 1960. Before the prelude of the EL merger, the double-track DL&W mainline stretched 396 miles between Buffalo and Hoboken.

Winters with over average rainfall produce "Superblooms" like this at the Carrizo Plain .

Plains Bison (Bison bison) bull bellowing out its call during the onset of the breeding season in Elk Island National Park east of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

There were a number of bulls calling out on the grasslands but none of them were really out to challenge another bull on the day we visited the park. I believe it was still early in the season and they were just starting to feel the biological urge.

These birds are only found in the USA in southern Texas. They are noisy birds. They are 18-21" (46-53 cm) long with a wingspan of 26" (66 cm).

Way out in nowhere. Van Matre Ranch, Carrizo Plains, Ca.

I find myself fascinated by these pivot irrigation systems. They look like giant mechanical bugs to me. See, for example, The Thing . They look like bugs to me. : )

I wrote a short blog post about my December 2019 trip to Manitoba and North Dakota, if you're interested in reading about it.

The open plains of eastern Colorado are intensified by the cloudless sky. Such feelings of abandonment prevail in the area on days like this when it seems that man and nature alike, have fled.

A very traditional Gas rolls through Plains in the late afternoon.

OL Pejeta Conservancy, Kenya

It’s an end to a great second day on the Montana Rail Link, unfortunately my father and I ended up in Paradise after following the 10th Sub and eventually Plains in hopes of finding the gas train, we were unsuccessful. After much despair, I decided to take some shots of the Northern Pacific Searchlight Cantilever’s, all is calm as we’re looking east towards the Flathead River Valley on the MRL 4th Sub. The looming BNSF takeover at this time was only under a week away, something that still hurts to hear about of our beloved Montana Rail Link. Taken: 12-23-23

Danaus chrysippus (Linnaeus, 1758), also known as the plain tiger or African monarch, is a butterfly species that belongs to the milkweed subfamily of the brush-footed butterfly family, Nymphalidae. The butterfly is widespread in Asia and Africa. The plain tiger is believed to be one of the first butterflies to be used in art. A 3500-year-old Egyptian fresco features the oldest illustration of this species.

This butterfly uses some interesting defense mechanisms. For instance, the plain tiger is protected from attacks due to the unpalatable alkaloids ingested during the larval stages. The butterfly, therefore, flies slowly and leisurely, generally close to the ground and in a straight line. This gives a wannabe predator ample time to recognise and avoid attacking it.

I found this species a few weeks ago at Polis, Cyprus. For those interested in the technical details, this is a handheld shot, taken with Nikon D750 and Nikon 105 mm f/2.8 VR, with a 1/200s shutter speed at f/11 and ISO 100, plus SB-900 flash diffused.

If you like what you see, do not hesitate to throw a star, or to leave a constructive comment! :-)

What I believe to be a Plains Clubtail dragonfly from back in late May at Mill Pond. A new one for my Mill Pond odonata images.

Captured and released. Used 5 lights in studio to get this shot. It was very cooperative while I moved the camera around and nudged him into position. Had to coax him into sticking his tongue out. Nerodia erythrogaster

off the blackwater river. A brief respite this morning from the incessant rain and wind of late. Didn’t last for long though, before the downpours resumed for the rest of the day!

This afternoon, the eastbound Mountaineer nears the east switch at Plain as it hurries toward Denver. Plain is a siding and a small MofW base in the settlement of Plainview, Colorado, about 24 rail miles west of the Mile-High City. Plainview is where the plains end and the mountains begin. From here, one has a plain view of the plains. Photo by Joe McMillan, September 12, 2023, at 5:05 p.m.
