The open plains of eastern Colorado are intensified by the cloudless sky. Such feelings of abandonment prevail in the area on days like this when it seems that man and nature alike, have fled.

It’s an end to a great second day on the Montana Rail Link, unfortunately my father and I ended up in Paradise after following the 10th Sub and eventually Plains in hopes of finding the gas train, we were unsuccessful. After much despair, I decided to take some shots of the Northern Pacific Searchlight Cantilever’s, all is calm as we’re looking east towards the Flathead River Valley on the MRL 4th Sub. The looming BNSF takeover at this time was only under a week away, something that still hurts to hear about of our beloved Montana Rail Link. Taken: 12-23-23
Zebras have legs that are long and slender but very strong, enabling the zebra to run up to 40 miles per hour to escape predators. In addition, the zebra is nimble enough to evade predators or to kick them at close range. In fact, the zebra can use its hooves to deliver a kick capable of injuring or even killing an animal as large as a lion.
Constantly on the watch for lions and hyenas, a herd helps with all of its extra eyes to monitor for danger. If a zebra is attacked, other zebras come to its defense and form a circle around it to ward off the predator. ... Zebras are often found mingling with other animals, adding extra protection against threats.
Danaus chrysippus (Linnaeus, 1758), also known as the plain tiger or African monarch, is a butterfly species that belongs to the milkweed subfamily of the brush-footed butterfly family, Nymphalidae. The butterfly is widespread in Asia and Africa. The plain tiger is believed to be one of the first butterflies to be used in art. A 3500-year-old Egyptian fresco features the oldest illustration of this species.
This butterfly uses some interesting defense mechanisms. For instance, the plain tiger is protected from attacks due to the unpalatable alkaloids ingested during the larval stages. The butterfly, therefore, flies slowly and leisurely, generally close to the ground and in a straight line. This gives a wannabe predator ample time to recognise and avoid attacking it.
I found this species a few weeks ago at Polis, Cyprus. For those interested in the technical details, this is a handheld shot, taken with Nikon D750 and Nikon 105 mm f/2.8 VR, with a 1/200s shutter speed at f/11 and ISO 100, plus SB-900 flash diffused.

What I believe to be a Plains Clubtail dragonfly from back in late May at Mill Pond. A new one for my Mill Pond odonata images.
Captured and released. Used 5 lights in studio to get this shot. It was very cooperative while I moved the camera around and nudged him into position. Had to coax him into sticking his tongue out. Nerodia erythrogaster
off the blackwater river. A brief respite this morning from the incessant rain and wind of late. Didn’t last for long though, before the downpours resumed for the rest of the day!
One last 3-shot panorama from the car on the way out of a wonderful experience on the Carrizo Plain!

This afternoon, the eastbound Mountaineer nears the east switch at Plain as it hurries toward Denver. Plain is a siding and a small MofW base in the settlement of Plainview, Colorado, about 24 rail miles west of the Mile-High City. Plainview is where the plains end and the mountains begin. From here, one has a plain view of the plains. Photo by Joe McMillan, September 12, 2023, at 5:05 p.m.
