It was dusk on the Monaro High Plains back in 2008, when I stopped to take this landscape panorama. The old gnarled Gum tree was never the subject, but it was the star.

The romantic sounding Monaro High Plain is a tableland, 900 metres above sea level, lying between the Great Dividing Range to the east, and the Snowy Mountains to the west. It is a naturally treeless plain covered in native speargrasses Stipa spp that since its discovery by white explorers in the 1820s has been used for extensive grazing of sheep and cattle.

In all my years of trying to find and photograph the bison herd near Delta Junction Alaska, I had only seen them twice, both times from well over a half mile away. With the Delta River flowing, it was impossible to cross over to get any closer.

In the last month, we have traveled down to see if we could find them four times since first seeing them about 5 weeks ago. Well, we are now 4 for 4 in finding them.

This is my favorite photo of all that were taken. The bull is looking directly at me as it browses on the vegitation. Behind him, about 30 feet away, was a young cow bison. She was laying down resting the entire time we were photographing this bull. I did take a couple photos of her but this guy had my attention. After 7 months of winter, he looked a little lean but very healthy. Who knows, perhaps our next trip will be 5 for 5?

The name Plain Chachalaca doesn’t invoke images of a very interesting bird, well at least the plain part doesn’t. Chachalaca, on the other hand has to be one of the most fun bird names I know. Admittedly the plumage of these birds is pretty plain and drab but what this species lacks in flashy feathers it makes up for in attitude and raucous vocalizations. We watched a big flock of these “little turkeys” as they impatiently waited for the volunteers to show up with the suet at Bentsen State Park earlier this week. This one almost seemed like a lookout, or at least it did a great job staring me down as I tried to find the ideal spot to wait for a good Green Jay photo. While all the other chachalacas scurried around on the ground this character sat focused on me barely moving for quite some time.

Loved these crazy, noisy birds

The red patch on his throat is a breeding sign and shows he is ready to mate.

The ruin Landskron in Oppenheim permits framed views on the Rhine plain. While the Rhine itself is barely discernible in its bed, the cooling towers of the former nuclear reactor in Biblis are. Supposedly, on clear days it should even be possible to see the northernmost part of the Black Forest in a distance of more than 140km.

Serengeti, named by the Masai, which stands for endless plains is one of the last refuges for wild lions on earth. Most lions now live in eastern and southern Africa, and their numbers there are rapidly decreasing, with an estimated 30–50% decline per 20 years in the late half of the 20th century. Estimates of the African lion population range between 16,500 and 47,000 living in the wild in 2002–2004,down from early 1990s estimates that ranged as high as 100,000 and perhaps 400,000 in 1950.

The Plains bison were native to the Southern Plains, the Wood Bison lived farther north and was larger than the Plains bison. Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, Indiahoma, OK. Our beautiful world being passed on.

Dendrocincia fuliginosa. This was a tough bird to spot. It took the sharp eyes of our guide, and a laser pointer for the rest of us to see it.

The plains of the Mojave Narrows Park and Wildlife refuge in Southern California. This shot shows a good perspective of the actual 'Mojave Narrows'; the narrowing of the rock canyon where the river passes through creating this wonderful habitat.

We found a pretty decent sized ant swarm while at La Selva that had around 5 Plain-brown Woodcreepers attending it, along with a Cocoa Woodcreeper, and some Northern Barred-Woodcreepers. No antbirds at the swarm, but it was cool to see woodcreepers so well! A new group of birds for me.

So plain back in 1986 when I shot this but something I'd sure like to be able to shoot today is this 912 powered by 764 and 760.This was April 26, 1986 and actually it was pretty hard to shoot 912 at Trout Lake by this time as it was normally gone by or before sunrise. I can't remember why this one had fallen back into it's more like its old 1970's time but it had and I was there to shoot the good looking pair of -2's.
