It's been rainy weather for two days straight and they're predicting a third and fourth. It didn't stop the neighbohood kids from celebrating the beginning of the weekend.

One of Australia's rarest & most quirky birds - the Critically Endangered Plains-wanderer. These tiny birds measure only 15-19cm tall, with the male (pictured) being noticeably smaller than the female.

As their name might indicate, Plains-wanderer habitat is sparse native grasslands, located on the Northern plains of Victoria & the Riverina region of NSW. They are very particular about their environment, & with much of their original grasslands no longer suitable due to over-grazing, they are now only found in a few remote locations.

There's something very special about an encounter with these rare creatures. Wandering around in these seemingly endless & featureless paddocks, with only a headlamp for light, the search for these tiny birds can seem like a fool's endeavour. But when you finally catch a glimpse of one of them, the hours of searching are very quickly forgotten! Such an amazing experience.

One of the largest insects in the country, plains lubbers can emerge in massive numbers when the conditions are right. Unable to fly due to their considerable bulk and undersized wings, these grasshoppers prefer to walk and hop short distances as they scour the ground for a variety of food sources including both plant and animal material. These lumbering beasts are native to the Great Plains, parts of the Southwest, and northern Mexico. We saw thousands in varied habitats in the Davis Mountains and adjacent semi-arid prairie and desert scrub.

A rework of of an old shot to mark 3 years since returning from New Zealand. This was one of the photos I had hoped to take before leaving but didn't expect to get the opportunity.

he raw looked really quite different as there was quite a haze as well as having to deal with the dirty plastic windows of the aeroplane.

Zebras have legs that are long and slender but very strong, enabling the zebra to run up to 40 miles per hour to escape predators. In addition, the zebra is nimble enough to evade predators or to kick them at close range. In fact, the zebra can use its hooves to deliver a kick capable of injuring or even killing an animal as large as a lion.

Constantly on the watch for lions and hyenas, a herd helps with all of its extra eyes to monitor for danger. If a zebra is attacked, other zebras come to its defense and form a circle around it to ward off the predator. ... Zebras are often found mingling with other animals, adding extra protection against threats.

The Plains bison (Bison bison bison) is one of two subspecies of the American bison, the other being the wood bison (B. b. athabascae). They are the largest land mammal in North America with some adult bulls weighing in excess of 2,000 pounds. Tens of millions of these iconic beasts once roamed across much of North America. Remnants of historical herds remain only in national/state parks and various refuges. Photo taken in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in SW Oklahoma. Our beautiful world being passed on.

The Plains Zebra (Equus quagga), also known as the common zebra, is the most abundant of three species of zebra. Zebras have very good hearing and eyesight, which helps them stay clear of predators such as lions, hyenas, and cheetahs. It also helps that they can run 56 km/h (35 mph) and pack a powerful kick. If one zebra spots a predator, it lets out a sharp two-syllable call. The young and female zebras run, while the males trail behind to defend them. If one is attacked, others circle around to help protect it from predators. Photographed in Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. Africa.

While at Edwards Gardens in Scarborough On. some time ago, I came across a family of Canada Geese. I sat down very close to them and started photographing. What ensued was terrific photos and just plain cute goslings doing their thing, of course under the watchful eye of mom and dad.

I got 5th place in the D3A contest with this image - I knew there had to be a reason for the sudden increase in traffic! www.diyphotography.net/d3a-5th-place-winner Wish I'd removed the frame now but I seem to be one of those people who prefers them! :-)

I guess getting 5th place out of 5 prizes means I get last choice:-> but my preference would be for the explorer followed by the lensbaby, timer, vertex and then gells.

Is it just me or is there some weird Escher type optical illusion in the middle of this?
